Space Science and Applications

The exploitation of the present tethered system and the need for repeat missions; multiple payloads placed along the tether; the extension of the present altitude limit to below 130 km; the development of free-flying tether satellites for studying both the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere and also for studying the plantes; and a subtether were discussed. Areas of research were identified: aeronomy studies, gravity and magnetic potential mission, advanced sensors for geodynamics, and mapping and remote sensing.

A report from the Space Science and Engineering Center, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin

Operational forecasters have habitually been plagued with the problems associated with acquisition, display, and dissemination of data used in preparing forecasts. The centralized storm information system (CSIS) experiment provided an operational forecaster with an interactive computer system which could perform these preliminary tasks more quickly and accurately than any human could. CSIS objectives pertaining to improved severe storms forecasting and warning procedures are addressed.

Earth and space science - Oceans

Satellite observations of the oceans are now being used to obtain new information about the oceanic geoid, currents, winds, tides and the interaction of the ocean with the atmosphere. In addition, satellites routinely relay information from the sea surface to laboratories on land, and determine the position of instruments drifting on the sea surface.

Multidisciplinary research in the space sciences

Research activities were carried out in the following areas during this reporting period: (1) astrophysics; (2) climate and atmospheric modeling; and (3) climate applications of earth observations & geological studies. An ultra-low-noise 115 GHz receiver based upon a superconducting tunnel diode mixer has been designed and constructed. The first laboratory tests have yielded spectacular results: a single-sideband noise temperature of 75 K considerably more sensitive than any other receiver at this frequency. The receiver will replace that currently in use on the Columbia-GISS CO Sky Survey telescope. The 1.2 meter millimeter-wave telescope at Columbia University has been used to complete two large-scale surveys of molecular matter in the part of the inner galaxy which is visible from the Northern hemisphere (the first galactic quadrant); one of the distant galaxy and one of the solar neighborhood. The research conducted during the past year in the climate and atmospheric modeling programs has been focused on the development of appropriate atmospheric and upper ocean models, and preliminary applications of these models. Principal models are a one-dimensional radiative-convective model, a three-dimensional global climate model, and an upper ocean model. During the past year this project has focused on development of 2-channel satellite analysis methods and radiative transfer studies in support of multichannel analysis techniques.

The U.C. Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory and Department of Physics Submillimeter Receiver

The UCB submm heterodyne receiver is a complete system for high-resolution astronomical spectroscopy in the 350-micron and 450-micron atmospheric windows. This compact system mounts directly at the Cassegrain focus of large optical and IR telescopes. It consists of a laser local oscillator, open structure mixer, quasi-optical coupling system, a broad-band IF system, and an acoustooptical spectrometer. The local oscillator is a 1-m-long submm laser optically pumped by a CO2 laser. The mixer is a quasi-optical corner-cube antenna structure and Schottky diode. The mixer is currently operated at room temperature, and its performance at 77 K is being evaluated. The system noise temperature is less than 7000 K SSB during observations.

NASA and the United States educational system - Outreach programs in aeronautics, space science, and technology

The role of NASA in developing a well-educated American work force is addressed. NASA educational programs aimed at precollege students are examined, including the NASA Spacemobile, Urban Community Enrichment Program, and Summer High School Apprenticeship Program. NASA workshops and programs aimed at helping teachers develop classroom curriculum materials are described. Programs aimed at college and graduate-level students are considered along with coordination efforts with other federal agencies and with corporations.

Space Science Reviews volume on Galileo Mission overview

The Galileo Mission, rather than a 'Jupiter mission' per se, is an integrated project encompassing multidisciplinary objectives regarding the whole of the Jovian system. This system is important in view of insights it affords into the conditions of the early solar nebula, as well as into the complex, interacting processes involved in planetary evolution. Jupiter itself is the focus of interest in virtue of representing a transitional object between the terrestrial planets and stars; its composition may be virtually unaltered from that of the original solar nebula. The Jovian system in its entirety presents basic questions regarding its satellite and ring system, which constitute a 'minisolar system'. The Galileo spacecraft consists of an Orbiter and an atmospheric entry Probe.

Activities involving aeronautical, space science, and technology support for minority institutions

The Final Report addressed the activities with which the Interracial Council for Business Opportunity (ICBO) was involved over the past 12 months. ICBO was involved in the design and development of a CARES Student Tracking System Software (CARES). Cares is intended to provide an effective means of maintaining relevant current and historical information on NASA-funded students through a range of educational program initiatives. ICBP was extensively involved in the formation of a minority university consortium amd implementation of collaborative research activities by the consortium as part of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth/Earth Observing System. ICBO was involved in the formation of an HBCU/MI Consortium to facilitate technology transfer efforts to the small and minority business community in their respective regions.
