The Bethe-Ansatz approach to the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 superconformal index at finite rank

We investigate the Bethe-Ansatz approach to the superconformal index of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills with SU( N ) gauge group in the context of finite rank, N . We explicitly explore the role of the various types of solutions to the Bethe-Ansatz Equations in recovering the exact index for N = 2 , 3. We classify the Bethe-Ansatz Equations solutions as standard (corresponding to a freely acting orbifold T 2 /Z m × Z n ) and non-standard. For N = 2, we find that the index is fully recovered by standard solutions and displays an interesting pattern of cancellations. However, for N ≥ 3, the standard solutions alone do not suffice to reconstruct the index. We present quantitative arguments in various regimes of fugacities that highlight the challenging role played by the continuous families of non-standard solutions.

The Page curve for reflected entropy

We study the reflected entropy $S_{R}$ in the West Coast Model, a toy model of black hole evaporation consisting of JT gravity coupled to end-of-the-world branes. We demonstrate the validity of the holographic duality relating it to the entanglement wedge cross section away from phase transitions. Further, we analyze the important non-perturbative effects that smooth out the discontinuity in the phase transition. By performing the gravitational path integral, we obtain the reflected entanglement spectrum analytically. The spectrum takes a simple form consisting of superselection sectors, which we interpret as a direct sum of geometries, a disconnected one and a connected one involving a closed universe. We find that area fluctuations of $\textit{O}$$\sqrt{G_N}$ spread out the $S_{R}$ phase transition in the canonical ensemble, analogous to the entanglement entropy phase transition. We also consider a Renyi generalization of the reflected entropy and show that the location of the phase transition varies as a function of the Renyi parameter.

Universality in logarithmic temperature corrections to near-extremal rotating black hole thermodynamics in various dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS 4 , Kerr-Newman-AdS 4 and the rotating black hole in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS5 black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2}$logT Hawking to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

Corrections in the relative entropy of black hole microstates

Inspired by the recent work of Bao and Ooguri (BO), we investigate the distinguishability of the black hole microstates from the thermal state as captured by the average of their relative entropies: the Holevo information. Under the assumption that the vacuum conformal block dominates the entropy calculation, BO find that the average relative entropy vanishes on spatial regions smaller than half the size of the CFT. Nonetheless, vacuum block dominance fails for some microstates of the M = 0 BTZ black hole. We show that this renders the average relative entropy nonzero even on infinitesimal intervals at O(c 0 ).

Black hole microstate cosmology

In this note, we explore the possibility that certain high-energy holographic CFT states correspond to black hole microstates with a geometrical behind-the-horizon region, modelled by a portion of a second asymptotic region terminating at an end-of-the-world (ETW) brane. We study the time-dependent physics of this behind-the-horizon region, whose ETW boundary geometry takes the form of a closed FRW spacetime. We show that in many cases, this behind-the-horizon physics can be probed directly by looking at the time dependence of entanglement entropy for sufficiently large spatial CFT subsystems. We study in particular states defined via Euclidean evolution from conformal boundary states and give specific predictions for the behavior of the entanglement entropy in this case. We perform analogous calculations for the SYK model and find qualitative agreement with our expectations. We also calculate holographic complexity for the d = 2 ETW geometries, finding that complexity-action and complexity-volume proposals give the same linear growth at late times, but differ at early times. A fascinating possibility is that for certain states, we might have gravity localized to the ETW brane as in the Randall-Sundrum II scenario for cosmology. In this case, the effective description of physics beyond the horizon could be a big bang/big crunch cosmology of the same dimensionality as the CFT. In this case, the d -dimensional CFT describing the black hole microstate would give a precise, microscopic description of the d -dimensional cosmological physics.

Microscopic entropy of AdS3 black holes revisited

A bstract We revisit the microscopic description of AdS 3 black holes in light of recent progress on their higher dimensional analogues. The grand canonical partition function that follows from the AdS 3 /CFT 2 correspondence describes BPS and nearBPS black hole thermodynamics. We formulate an entropy extremization principle that accounts for both the black hole entropy and a constraint on its charges, in close analogy with asymptotically AdS black holes in higher dimensions. We are led to interpret supersymmetric black holes as ensembles of BPS microstates satisfying a charge constraint that is not respected by individual states. This interpretation provides a microscopic understanding of the hitherto mysterious charge constraints satisfied by all BPS black holes in AdS. We also develop thermodynamics and a nAttractor mechanism of AdS 3 black holes in the nearBPS regime.

Sphere and disk partition functions in Liouville and in matrix integrals

We compute the sphere and disk partition functions in semiclassical Liouville and analogous quantities in double-scaled matrix integrals. The quantity sphere/disk2 is unambiguous and we find a precise numerical match between the Liouville answer and the matrix integral answer. An application is to show that the sphere partition function in JT gravity is infinite.

Supersymmetry and superstrata in three dimensions

We analyze the supersymmetry transformations of gauged SO(4) supergravity coupled to extra hypermultiplets in three dimensions, and find large families of smooth BPS solutions that preserve four supersymmetries. These BPS solutions are part of the consistent truncation of some families of six-dimensional superstrata. From the three-dimensional perspective, these solutions give rise to “smoothly-capped BTZ” geometries. We show how the twisting of the spin connection, the holomorphy of the fields, and the Chern-Simons connections all play an essential role in the existence of these supersymmetric solutions. This paper also closes the circle on the consistent truncation of superstrata, showing precisely how every feature of the superstratum enters into the three-dimensional BPS structure.

Graviton scattering and a sum rule for the c anomaly in 4D CFT

4D CFTs have a scale anomaly characterized by the coefficient c, which appears as the coefficient of logarithmic terms in momentum space correlation functions of the energy-momentum tensor. By studying the CFT contribution to 4-point graviton scattering amplitudes in Minkowski space we derive a sum rule for c in terms of TT O OPE coefficients. The sum rule can be thought of as a version of the optical theorem, and its validity depends on the existence of the massless and forward limits of the $\langle$TTTT$\rangle$ correlation functions that contribute. The finiteness of these limits is checked explicitly for free scalar, fermion, and vector CFTs. The sum rule gives c as a sum of positive terms, and therefore implies a lower bound on c given any lower bound on TT O OPE coefficients. We compute the coefficients to the sum rule for arbitrary operators of spin 0 and 2, including the energy-momentum tensor.

Submatrix deconfinement and small black holes in AdS

Large N gauged multi-matrix quantum mechanical models usually have a first order Hagedorn transition, related to deconfinement. In this transition the change of the energy and entropy is of order N 2 at the critical temperature. This paper studies the microcanonical ensemble of the model at intermediate energies 1 << E << N 2 in the coexistence region for the first order phase transition. Evidence is provided for a partial deconfinement phase where submatrix degrees of freedom for a U(M) subgroup of U(N), with M << N have an excitation energy of order M 2 and are effectively phase separated from the other degrees of freedom. Furthermore, these results also provide a simple example of the Susskind-Horowitz-Polchinski correspondence principle where a transition from a long string to a black hole is smooth. Implications for the dual configurations of small black holes in AdS are discussed.

Superstratum symbiosis

Superstrata are smooth horizonless microstate geometries for the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black hole in type IIB supergravity. In the CFT, “superstratum states” are defined to be the component of the supergraviton gas that is obtained by breaking the CFT into “|00⟩-strands” and acting on each strand with the “small,” anomaly-free superconformal generators. We show that the recently-constructed supercharged superstrata represent a final and crucial component for the construction of the supergravity dual of a generic superstratum state and how the supergravity solution faithfully represents all the coherent superstratum states of the CFT. For the supergravity alone, this shows that generic superstrata do indeed fluctuate as functions of three independent variables. Smoothness of the complete supergravity solution also involves “coiffuring constraints” at second-order in the fluctuations and we describe how these lead to new predictions for three-point functions in the dual CFT. We use a hybrid of the original and supercharged superstrata to construct families of single-mode superstrata that still have free moduli after one has fixed the asymptotic charges of the system. We also study scalar wave perturbations in a particular family of such solutions and show that the mass gap depends on the free moduli. This can have interesting implications for superstrata at non-zero temperature.

D1-D5-P superstrata in 5 and 6 dimensions: separable wave equations and prepotentials

We construct the most general single-mode superstrata in 5 dimensions with ambipolar, two centered Gibbons Hawking bases, via dimensional reduction of superstrata in 6 dimensions. Previously, asymptotically AdS 3 × $\mathbb{S}$ 2 5-dimensional superstrata have been produced, giving microstate geometries of black strings in 5 dimensions. Our construction produces asymptotically AdS 2 × $\mathbb{S}$ 3 geometries as well, the first instances of superstrata describing the microstate geometries of black holes in 5 dimensions. New examples of superstrata with separable massless wave equations in both 5 and 6 dimensions are uncovered. A $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 symmetry which identifies distinct 6-dimensional superstrata when reduced to 5 dimensions is found. Finally we use the mathematical structure of the underlying hyper-Kähler bases to produce prepotentials for the superstrata fluxes in 5 dimensions and uplift them to apply in 6 dimensions as well.l.

Conformal symmetries for extremal black holes with general asymptotic scalars in STU supergravity

We present a construction of the most general BPS black holes of STU supergravity (N = 2 supersymmetric D = 4 supergravity coupled to three vector super-multiplets) with arbitrary asymptotic values of the scalar fields. These solutions are obtained by acting with a subset of the global symmetry generators on STU BPS black holes with zero values of the asymptotic scalars, both in the U-duality and the heterotic frame. The solutions are parameterized by fourteen parameters: four electric and four magnetic charges, and the asymptotic values of the six scalar fields. We also present BPS black hole solutions of a consistently truncated STU supergravity, which are parameterized by two electric and two magnetic charges and two scalar fields. These latter solutions are significantly simplified, and are very suitable for further explicit studies. We also explore a conformal inversion symmetry of the Couch-Torrence type, which maps any member of the fourteen-parameter family of BPS black holes to another member of the family. Furthermore, these solutions are expected to be valuable in the studies of various swampland conjectures in the moduli space of string compactifications.

The phase diagram of BPS black holes in AdS 5

Motivated by recent studies of supersymmetric black holes, we revisit the phase diagram of AdS black holes, whether BPS or not, with particular emphasis on the role of rotation. We develop BPS thermodynamics systematically and, in many explicit examples, we study its striking similarities with more familiar AdS black holes, as well as some differences. We highlight an important fugacity that preserves BPS saturation but is not captured by the supersymmetric index.

Elliptical and purely $\mathrm{NS}$ superstrata

We analyze the BPS equations in the “superstratum sector” of three-dimensional gauged supergravity. We obtain multi-parameter supersymmetric solutions that include elliptical deformations of the supertubes that underlie standard superstrata. We uplift the three-dimensional solutions to obtain the corresponding six-dimensional geometries. This yields new families of elliptically-deformed, ambi-bolar hyper-Kahler geometries in four dimensions with a non-tri-holomorphic U(1) isometry. We also find a new family of scaling superstrata whose S-dual lives entirely within the NS-sector of supergravity, and will thus be more amenable to exact analysis using string probes. In all these new superstrata, including the scaling ones, if the momentum charge is non-zero we find that the ellipse stays away from the degeneration locus in which the ellipse becomes flat.

Exact QFT duals of AdS black holes

We construct large N saddle points of the matrix model for the $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 Yang- Mills index dual to the BPS black holes in AdS 5 × S 5 , in two different setups. When the two complex chemical potentials for the angular momenta are collinear, we find linear eigenvalue distributions which solve the large N saddle point equation. When the chemical potentials are not collinear, we find novel solutions given by areal eigenvalue distributions after slightly reformulating the saddle point problem. We also construct a class of multi-cut saddle points, showing that they sometimes admit nontrivial filling fractions. As a byproduct, we find that the Bethe ansatz equation emerges from our saddle point equation.

Wormholes without averaging

After averaging over fermion couplings, SYK has a collective field description that sometimes has “wormhole” solutions. We study the fate of these wormholes when the couplings are fixed. Working mainly in a simple model, we find that the wormhole saddles persist, but that new saddles also appear elsewhere in the integration space — “half-wormholes.” The wormhole contributions depend only weakly on the specific choice of couplings, while the half-wormhole contributions are strongly sensitive. The half-wormholes are crucial for factorization of decoupled systems with fixed couplings, but they vanish after averaging, leaving the non-factorizing wormhole behind.

Shocks and information exchange in de Sitter space

We discuss some implications of recent progress in understanding the black hole information paradox for complementarity in de Sitter space. Extending recent work by two of the authors, we describe a bulk procedure that allows information expelled through the cosmological horizon to be received by an antipodal observer. Generically, this information transfer takes a scrambling time t=H- 1 (S ds ). We emphasize that this procedure relies crucially on selection of the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, interpreted as the thermofield double state that maximally entangles two antipodal static patches. The procedure also requires the presence of an (entangled) energy reservoir, created by the collection of Hawking modes from the cosmological horizon. We show how this procedure avoids a cloning paradox and comment on its implications.
