Practically Accessible All-Solid-State Batteries Enabled by Organosulfide Cathodes and Sulfide Electrolytes

The combination of organic electrode materials and sulfide electrolytes is expected to enable the development of all-solid-state organic batteries featuring high energy density and long-term sustainability. In this work, thiuram hexasulfide is reported as a low-cost and high-capacity organic cathode for solid-state batteries based on sulfide electrolytes, delivering a capacity of ~600 mAh g -1 and retaining 80.8 % capacity after 500 cycles. An electrochemically reversible change of the cathode interface was revealed upon cycling. Full cell displays an oscillating stress change up to 0.6 MPa during cycling, predominated by the anode side. The energy density is 1140 Wh kg -1 at the material level and 376 Wh kg -1 at the electrode level, which are among the best-reported organic cathodes to date. A high areal capacity of 10.4 mAh cm -2 is reached with a high mass loading cathode. A dry-film approach is further explored to manufacture sheet-type cells. Free-standing electrolyte film is merely ~48 μm thick and demonstrates an ultralow areal resistance of 3.9 Ω cm 2 , significantly boosts the cell-level energy density and reduces the cell internal resistance.

Suppressing Structural Relaxation in Nanoscale Antimony to Enable Ultralow‐Drift Phase‐Change Memory Applications

Abstract Phase‐change random‐access memory (PCRAM) devices suffer from pronounced resistance drift originating from considerable structural relaxation of phase‐change materials (PCMs), which hinders current developments of high‐capacity memory and high‐parallelism computing that both need reliable multibit programming. This work realizes that compositional simplification and geometrical miniaturization of traditional GeSbTe‐like PCMs are feasible routes to suppress relaxation. While to date, the aging mechanisms of the simplest PCM, Sb, at nanoscale, have not yet been unveiled. Here, this work demonstrates that in an optimal thickness of only 4 nm, the thin Sb film can enable a precise multilevel programming with ultralow resistance drift coefficients, in a regime of ≈10 −4 –10 −3 . This advancement is mainly owed to the slightly changed Peierls distortion in Sb and the less‐distorted octahedral‐like atomic configurations across the Sb/SiO 2 interfaces. This work highlights a new indispensable approach, interfacial regulation of nanoscale PCMs, for pursuing ultimately reliable resistance control in aggressively‐miniaturized PCRAM devices, to boost the storage and computing efficiencies substantially.

Harnessing plant‐based platform for low‐cost cellulosic sugar recovery from bioenergy crops

The price of pure cellulase enzyme for the recovery of fermentable cellulosic sugars is one of the major challenges that limit the commercialization of second-generation biofuels and bio-based products. This work shows a means to greatly reduce the cost of cellulases. The abundant capacity of plants to synthesize and hyperaccumulate transgenic proteins in their plastids has been demonstrated for two gene constructs using either NPT II or Tet C to regulate the expression of bacterial cellulase Cel6A. Previously, the expression of Cel6A to 20–35% of total soluble leaf protein in tobacco was shown in two consecutive field trials. Moving forward, the key challenge was the extraction of active enzymes from the transgenic tobacco leaves hyperaccumulating bacterial cellulases in a cost-effective manner. The study showed that unpurified crude extracts of NPT II and Tet C transgenic tobacco leaves recovered ~23% and ~29% w/w cellulosic sugars from energycane bagasse, respectively. A supplementation of as low as 25% of purified commercial cellulase improved the glucose recovery by 2.9 times (~85% w/w) compared to 100% crude extract, which is comparable to the glucose recovery obtained by commercial cellulases, thereby suggesting a reduced requirement of commercial cellulases leading to a cost reduction of 75% for biorefineries. Assuming a stable 40% cellulase yield in total soluble protein under field conditions and multiple harvests (one to three) a year, the study estimates that the potential cost for saccharification of 1 t of lignocellulosic biomass can be reduced to 67–200 USD by using crude leaf extracts of transgenic tobacco.

Ab initio studies on structural and thermodynamic properties of magnetic Fe

The present work systematically investigates the total energy, phonon spectra, and thermodynamic properties of different polymorphs of pure Fe, i.e., FCC, BCC, and HCP, with the ab initio approach, considering various magnetic configurations. In general, the calculated energy vs. volume curves and phonon spectra agree well with previous calculations and the experimental data. In addition, their thermodynamic properties are estimated by the quasiharmonic approximation (QHA). Specifically, a superposition approach based on the latest Zentropy theory was utilized to predict magnetic transition temperatures and thermodynamic properties of pure Fe. With the ensemble of the partition function considering the multiplicity of each magnetic microstate, the current work successfully reproduced the Curie/Néel temperature and the Schottky anomaly of heat capacity in FCC, BCC, and HCP Fe purely based on the ab initio input, which exhibits good agreement with the experimental data and CALPHAD modeling.

Stable salt hydrate-based thermal energy storage materials

Heating and cooling systems in building infrastructure utilize conventional materials that account for a considerable amount of energy usage and waste. Phase change material (PCM) is considered a promising candidate for thermal energy storage that can improve energy efficiency in building systems. In this work, a novel salt hydrate-based PCM composite with high energy storage capacity, relatively higher thermal conductivity, and excellent thermal cycling stability was designed and developed. The thermal cycling stability of the PCM composite was enhanced by using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) salt as a polyelectrolyte additive, which significantly reduced the phase segregation of salt hydrate. The energy storage capacity and the thermal conductivity of the composite were enhanced by the addition of various graphitic materials along with Borax nucleator. A significant increase in thermal cycling stability was observed for the DSS-modified composite, with over 100 thermal cycles without degradation. The final PCM composite exhibited as much as 290% increase in energy storage capacity relative to the pure salt hydrate, and approximately 20% increase in thermal conductivity. In addition, the PCM composite developed can be produced at larger scale, and can potentially change the future of heating/cooling system in building infrastructure.

The polymeric conformational effect on capacitive deionization performance of graphene oxide/polypyrrole composite electrode

Exploitation of novel faradic materials is an alternative implementation for solving the problem of poor specific electrosorption capacity that conventional carbon materials are encountered in capacitive deionization. Particularly, composite electrode is just a suitable choice because of its potentially high ion-storage ability. Herein, a cyclic voltammetric treatment method with different low limit of potential window was used to manipulate the polymeric conformation and doping level of graphene oxide/polypyrrole (GO/PPy) composite electrode. Based on it, the effect of polymeric structure on the electrosorption performance was systematically studied. When the low limit of potential window is shifted negatively enough, the irreversible polymeric conformational shrinks of GO/PPy are promoted, which not only hinders the insertion process of ions, but also decreases the doping level of polymer due to the intensive interchain-action produced by more entangled polymeric chain. Thus, the number of intercalated ions should decrease, which is expressed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results and is proportional to the electrosorption capacity of GO/PPy composite electrode in membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) process. Finally, our work suggests that the less packing density, higher doping level and more charge delocalization on PPy backbone in electrode are beneficial to enhance its capacitive deionization performance.

Understanding the Performance Gap between Polycrystalline and Single-Crystal Nickel-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes

Singe-crystal (SC) nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes, composed of boundary-free particles with high tap density, offer significant advantages in volumetric energy density and mechanical strength compared with polycrystalline (PC) cathode materials. However, as the nickel content increases (≥80%), SC Ni-rich cathodes often suffer from faster performance degradation than PC cathodes of the same composition, and the underlying causes of this discrepancy remain poorly understood. Herein, we reveal the distinct Ni redox behaviors that govern the electrochemical performance of SC and PC Ni-rich cathodes using multiscale and operando characterization techniques. Our results indicate that the increasingly heterogeneous Ni oxidation process in SC cathodes leads to the additional irreversible oxygen redox activity that deteriorates both the mechanical and chemical structures. In contrast, PC cathodes, despite with more pronounced surface reconstruction, exhibit greater chemomechanical stability due to homogeneous redox reactions during charging. Consequently, we find that bulk degradation, more than surface reactions, ultimately leads to fast capacity decay of SC Ni-rich cathodes during cycling. In conclusion, this work offers a comprehensive view on the impact of Ni redox evolutions on the chemomechanical stability in Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes, providing new insights into the longstanding performance gap between SC and PC cathodes, and guiding the rational design of Ni-rich cathode architectures.

Stabilizing LiCoO 2 at 4.6 V by regulating anti-oxidative solvents

For LiCoO 2 (LCO) operating at high voltages (>4.5 V vs. Li/Li + ), the intensive side reactions between LCO and traditional ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolytes with LiPF 6 salts can produce plenty of corrosive species (such as HF and HPO 2 F 2 ), causing severe surface degradation. Herein, anti-oxidative fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and difluoroethylene carbonate (DFEC) were selected as co-solvents to reduce the generation of corrosive species. Besides, PF 6 − anions enrich the Helmholtz plane of the LCO/electrolyte interface and promote the formation of a robust cathode/electrolyte interphase (CEI) featuring LiF/Li x PO y F z /Li 3 PO 4 inorganics and P-containing organics under the synergy of fluorinated solvents, which significantly inhibits the catalysis of highly oxidative Co 4+ /O n− (0 < n < 2). Benefiting from the reduced corrosive species and reinforced CEI, the layered structure of the LCO surface is well preserved during long-term cycling, with a highly reversible O3/H1-3 phase transition. Consequently, a LCO||graphite pouch cell exhibits a remarkable capacity retention of 85.7% after 500 cycles in 3.0–4.55 V. Furthermore, this work provides a new insight into developing advanced functional electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.

Detection of photon statistics and multimode field correlations by Raman processes

Glauber’s g (2) -function provides a common measure of quantum field statistics through two-photon coincidence counting in Hanbury Brown–Twiss measurements. Here, we propose to use nonlinear optical signals as a tool for the characterization of quantum light. In particular, we show that Raman measurements provide an alternative direct probe for a different component of the four-point correlation function underlying the g (2) -function. We illustrate this capacity for a specific quantum state obtained from a frequency conversion process. Our work points out how the analysis of controlled optical nonlinear processes can provide an alternative window toward the analysis of quantum light sources.

Point-node gap structure of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2

In this work, low-temperature electrical and thermal transport, magnetic penetration depth, and heat capacity measurements were performed on single crystals of the actinide superconductor UTe 2 to determine the structure of the superconducting energy gap. Heat transport measurements performed with currents directed along both crystallographic a and b axes reveal a vanishingly small residual fermionic component of the thermal conductivity. The magnetic field dependence of the residual term follows a rapid, quasilinear increase consistent with the presence of nodal quasiparticles, rising toward the a -axis upper critical field where the Wiedemann-Franz law is recovered. Together with a quadratic temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth up to T / T c = 0.3 , these measurements provide evidence for an unconventional spin-triplet superconducting order parameter with point nodes. Millikelvin specific heat measurements performed on the same crystals used for thermal transport reveal an upturn below 300 mK that is well described by a divergent quantum-critical contribution to the density of states (DOS). Modeling this contribution with a T - 1 / 3 power law allows restoration of the full entropy balance in the superconducting state and a resultant cubic power law for the electronic DOS below T c , consistent with the point-node gap structure determined by thermal conductivity and penetration depth measurements.

Design, Control, and Protection of a 13.2 kV, 1 MVA Solid State Transformer for Electric Vehicle Extreme Fast Charging Station

In this article, a medium-voltage (MV) ac-dc solid state transformer (SST) for electric vehicle (EV) extreme fast charging (XFC) station is proposed. The SST adopts a cascaded H-bridge (CHB)-based structure where the active front end (AFE) power stages are connected in input-series followed by dual active bridge (DAB) converters connected in an output-parallel configuration providing galvanic isolation through a high-frequency transformer (HFT). The SST is rated for 1 MVA and connects directly to a three-phase 13.2 kV MV ac grid through ac switchgear and outputs 750-V dc. At the dc bus, several dc/dc converters are connected, each of which can charge an EV based on its battery capacity. A novel decentralized control architecture of the SST is adopted in this work which simplifies the MV dc link voltage and module-level power balancing. In addition, the local and central protection designs of the SST are presented which identify and respond to the internal fault of the system. Finally, the experimental validations of the SST hardware prototype are presented up to the rated voltage. Furthermore, this article details the design and implementation of the MV SST addressing the challenges of an isolated MV class power converter for connecting directly to the MV ac grid with unique controller architecture, distributed protection framework, and SST constructional features.

Detecting Short Circuits: Post Accident Electric Vehicle Battery Safety Check

Fast and accurate detection of soft short circuits (SCs) in the battery packs of damaged electric vehicles is needed by first responders and mechanics to mitigate the potential risk from battery fires that may occur hours, days, or weeks after an accident. Here, this paper presents an SC-detection algorithm for potentially damaged lithium-ion batteries that works quickly and without a priori knowledge of the battery-pack chemistry, capacity, state of charge, or state of health. The proposed universal SC-detection algorithm is designed to be implemented on an inexpensive handheld device that can connect to and monitor the voltages of all cells in a pack. Transient filtering and linear-quadratic state observation provide estimates of normalized SC current for every cell in the pack. Cells with SC-current estimates outside a sigma-based threshold are detected. Simulations, experiments, and electric vehicle (EV) crash data are used to verify the speed, sensitivity, and accuracy of the method, demonstrating 96% accurate detection of 0.0027 C SCs in under 1 h for 5S cell groups in the lab and no false positives for crashed Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Tesla vehicles without SCs.

Critical steps in preventing future pandemics. Early lessons from the Covid-19 crisis for addressing natural and deliberate biological threats.

This report summarizes a virtual workshop on early lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic as they pertain to proactively addressing future biological threats. Co-hosted by Sandia National Laboratory (Sandia) and the Council on Strategic Risks (CSR) in August 2020, the discussion involved experts who at that time were leading innovative efforts in various U.S. government agencies, industry, and academia sharing observations from their ongoing pandemic response efforts. Based on the input by these expert participants, it is clear that even though the pandemic response is ongoing, the following recommendations will be important to consider for more successfully addressing biological threats in the future: Continue building on the cross-sector collaboration and agility shown in the COVID-19 response; Expand capabilities for detecting biological threats early; Prioritize ways to create and disseminate medical countermeasures even faster; Create the U.S. bio industrial base needed for rapid response to biological threats, and keep it healthy; and, Major government reorganization may not be needed if there is effective work to form coalitions, improve coordination, and expand steady-state and surge capacities.

Empowering Rural Electrification in Honduras: An Integrated Assessment of PV/BESS and Productive Uses of Electricity in Gracias a Dios

Honduras faces significant challenges in its energy sector, particularly in rural areas where access to reliable and affordable electricity remains limited. The flagship rural electrification initiative for Honduras Secretary of Energy (SEN) is the Politica de Acceso Universal a la Electricidad (PAUEH - Universal Electricity Access Policy), a key solution for addressing this energy poverty is the deployment of more than 1700 distributed solar and hybrid mini-grid solutions. In late 2023 as a first step towards supporting SEN's electrification efforts, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed a literature review of SEN electrification policy documents and conducted a series of technical capacity-building workshops with SEN and other energy sector stakeholders in Honduras focused on using NREL's open-source REopt tool to conduct techno-economic assessments and develop least-cost optimizations for potential solar + storage mini-grid systems. Building on some initial capacity building on mini-grid modeling, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) worked with SEN to develop a detailed techno-economic assessment for electrifying two schools, a healthcare clinic, and a hospital in a hypothetical community within the department of Gracias a Dios. The analysis also evaluates the business case for cold storage productive use of energy (PUE) applications for the fisheries value chain and how the incorporation of these PUE loads potentially impacts both the viability of the PV+BESS solutions as well as local economic development. By assessing the potential for deployment of integrated PV/BESS systems to both support critical community services like education and healthcare, as well as potential for downstream enterprise and economic development, this analysis represents a first step that can help to inform specific strategies for development of pilot PV+BESS projects aligned with national priorities and sector level planning under PAUEH.

Cost Benefit Analysis of Solar PV for the City of Oldsmar, FL

The City of Oldsmar is in the early stages of exploring renewable energy opportunities as a part of their initiative to reduce energy costs, improve backup power capacity, and begin the transition to more sustainable operations. The city is particularly interested in deploying a floating or ground-mounted solar PV system at its wastewater treatment plant. Currently, there are no solar PV installations in Oldsmar and there has been hesitancy to implement such a project due to the possible capital costs and limited technical capacity. Despite this the initiative has gained internal buy-in among staff working for the city. To assist with gaining more buy-in and making future decisions the city sought technical assistance (TA) from the Energy to Communities (E2C) Expert Match Program. Through the Expert Match Program, the city received TA provided by the Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) to evaluate the cost effectiveness of several solar options. This report details the analysis and results of the work performed for TA.

Sound at Scale: Characterizing Impacts of Noise Ordinances on the Onshore Wind Energy Technical Potential for the United States

Recent surveys have documented the rapid rise of sound ordinances across state and county jurisdictions, which has become crucial for wind energy siting. However, the lack of information on ordinances and computational challenges in turbine sound modeling create uncertainties regarding how evolving policies may affect resource potential and clean energy objectives. Therefore, we develop an approach to evaluate wind turbine sound profiles at millions of locations across the U.S. and translate them into setback distances for every residential structure. Compared to a baseline reference scenario, we find a 7% reduction in the national wind energy capacity potential when accounting for counties with existing sound ordinances. Additionally, when expanding the surveyed sound ordinances nationwide, we observe a potential loss of 53% of the national wind capacity under the most stringent ordinances, with a disproportionate share of this lost capacity coming from high-quality and low-cost wind resource. This work reveals that neglecting sound ordinances results in a significant overestimation of wind resource potential and highlights the important trade-offs between increased wind energy deployment to meet target decarbonization goals and the social/environmental impacts of this deployment that must be considered.

Single crystal cathodes enabling high-performance all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) are receiving significant attention owing to their improved safety and energy density over liquid counterparts. However, single-crystal cathodes have never been investigated in ASSLIBs. In this work, single-crystal Li(Ni 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 )O 2 (SC-NMC532) is used as the cathode material for ASSLIBs, which exhibits 6~14 times higher Li + diffusion coefficient than polycrystalline Li(Ni 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 )O 2 (PC-NMC532). As a result, SC-NMC532 exhibits an initial specific capacity of 156.4 mAh.g -1 while PC-NMC532 shows an initial capacity of only 127.5 mAh.g -1 . After 150 cycles, SC-NMC532 retains the capacity of 94.5 mAh.g -1 . More impressively, under a high current density of 1.3 mA.cm -2 , SC-NMC532 exhibits a capacity of 82 mAh.g -1 , much higher than that of PC-NMC532 (2.1 mAh.g -1 ). This work demonstrates that single-crystal NMC cathodes could enable both high power density and high energy density of ASSLIBs.
