Preparation of stable colloidal dispersions in fluorinated liquids

Chemical method for separating oil from water by liquid barrier which can be positioned magnetically is described. Fluorocarbon liquids containing colloidal suspension of magnetite is proposed. Chemical composition of magnetite and fluorinated ether polymer are presented.

Colloid thruster technology

A program is described for attaining control, reproducibility, and predictability of operation for the annular colloid emitter. A thruster of an improved design was used for a 1000 hour test. The thruster was operated with a neutralizer for 1023 hours at 15 kV with an average thrust of 25 micropound and specific impulse of 1160 sec. The performance was stable, and the beam was vectored periodically. The clean condition of the emitter edge at the end of the test coupled with no degradation in performance during the test indicated that the lifetime could be extrapolated by at least an order of magnitude over the test time.

Duration test of an annular colloid thruster.

An annular colloid thruster was continuously operated for 1023 hours. Performance was stable with no sparking and negligible drain currents observed. An average thrust of 25.1 micropounds and an average specific impulse of 1160 seconds were obtained at an accelerating voltage of 15 k he thruster exhaust beam was continuously neutralized using electrons and electrostatic vectoring was demonstrated periodically. The only clear trend with time was an increase in specific impulse during the last third of the test period. From these results the thruster lifetime was estimated to be over an order of magnitude greater than the test duration.

Accelerated purification of colloidal silica sols

Accelerated purification process for colloidal sols using heat/deionization scheme, sharply reduces waiting time between deionization cycles from several months to a few days. Process produces same high purity silica sols as conventional methods.

Temperature of solid particles in colloidal plasmas in space

Lehnert (1970) has investigated the question of the relationship between the kinetic temperature and the internal temperature at which a solid coexists with a plasma in a thermal steady state. The reported investigation is a more refined version of Lehnert's preliminary analysis of this relationship. The electric potential of grains is considered along with the ambient radiation field and the grain temperatures in the thermal steady state. An illustrative calculation is conducted of the grain temperatures in the dense regions of the primordial circumsolar colloidal plasma envelope such as envisioned in the Alfven-Arrhenius model (1976) of the origin of the solar system. It is shown that under certain conditions the solid grains can coexist with the plasma phase up to fairly high plasma densities and temperatures.

Colloidal plasmas in space - Some aspects of condensation and growth of solids

The abundant occurrence of colloidal plasma clouds in the observable universe is reviewed, and the possible locales of condensation of cosmic solids identified. The physical properties of the condensation environment and the thermal physics of the plasma-cluster medium are outlined. In the light of these discussions, an attempt is made to identify the salient features of the processes of nucleation and growth in space. It is suggested that the conventional nucleation theory is inadequate when applied to the tenuous, partially excited, partially ionized multispecies cosmic vapor phase, and that studies relying on the physics of progressive molecule growth in such environments hold promise of understanding the process of transition of a cluster from the size of a few atomic mass units through the macromolecular range into what may be characterized as the bulk condensed phase.
