Automated techniques for spacecraft monitoring

The feasibility of implementing automated spacecraft monitoring depends on four factors: sufficient computer resources, suitable monitoring function definitions, adequate spacecraft data, and effective and economical test systems. The advantages of automated monitoring lie in the decision-making speed of the computer and the continuous monitoring coverage provided by an automated monitoring program. Use of these advantages introduces a new concept of spacecraft monitoring in which system specialists, ground based or onboard, freed from routine and tedious monitoring, could devote their expertise to unprogrammed or contingency situations.

Studies of hydrodynamic events in stellar evolution. III Ejection of planetary nebulae

Investigation of the dynamic behavior of the hydrogen-rich envelope (0.101 solar mass) of an evolved star (1.1 solar mass) as the luminosity rises to 19,000 solar luminosities during the second ascent of the red-giant branch. For luminosities in the range 3100 less than L less than 19,000 solar luminosities the H-rich envelope pulsates like a long-period variable (LPV) with periods of the order of a year. As L reaches 19,000 solar luminosities, the entire H-rich envelope is ejected as a shell with speeds of a few times 10 km sec. The ejection occurs on a time scale of a few LPV pulsation periods. This ejection is shown to be related to the formation of a planetary nebula. The computations are based on an implicit hydrodynamic computer code. Tand rho-dependent opacities and excitation and ionization energies are included. As the H-rich envelope is accelerated off the stellar core, the gap between envelope and core is approximated by a vacuum filled with radiation.

On the nature of the radial and cross track errors for artificial earth satellites

The analysis of the radial and cross track errors of artificial earth satellites is discussed in terms of the interference of two one-dimensional celestial mechanical wave trains. Resulting equations for these tracking errors describe the behavior of the uncertainties in the orbital parameters as oscillatory in nature, with a rapidly oscillating term, which is a function of the sum of the observed and computed orbital frequencies, modulated in amplitude by a slowly varying oscillation. This latter term is itself a function of either the difference between these orbital frequencies or between the values of the computed and observed right ascensions, depending upon whether it is the radial or cross track case under consideration. These results indicate that the cross track calculation describes the behavior of uncertainties in the right ascension of the ascending node and the inclination, while the radial calculation gives information on uncertainties in the semi-major axis, the eccentricity, and the argument of perigee. In addition, expressions for the radial and cross track oscillatory frequencies are obtained in terms of the orbital frequencies of the satellites. Data show that the time average of the radial and cross track errors in any case, will both approach zero.

Manipulation based on sensor-directed control: An integrated end effector and touch sensing system

A hand/touch sensing system is described that, when mounted on a position-controlled manipulator, greatly expands the kinds of automated manipulation tasks that can be undertaken. Because of the variety of coordinate conversions, control equations, and completion criteria, control is necessarily dependent upon a small digital computer. The sensing system is designed both to be rugged and to sense the necessary touch and force information required to execute a wide range of manipulation tasks. The system consists of a six-axis wrist sensor, external touch sensors, and a pair of matrix jaw sensors. Details of the construction of the particular sensors, the integration of the end effector into the sensor system, and the control algorithms for using the sensor outputs to perform manipulation tasks automatically are discussed.

Numerical computation of two-dimensional viscous blunt body flows with an impinging shock

Two-dimensional, viscous, blunt body flows with an impinging shock wave are computed using a time-dependent, finite-difference method to solve the complete set of Navier-Stokes equations. The bow shock wave is treated as a discontinuity, while all interior shock layer detail such as shear layers, shock waves, jets, and the wall boundary layer are automatically captured in the solution. Numerical results are presented for cases in which shock waves of different strengths are allowed to impinge on the flow field surrounding a circular cylinder resulting in different shock interference patterns. The two-dimensional results are compared qualitatively with existing three-dimensional experiments.

Pressure model of a four-way spool valve for simulating electrohydraulic control systems

An equation that relates the pressure flow characteristics of hydraulic spool valves was developed. The dependent variable is valve output pressure, and the independent variables are spool position and flow. This causal form of equation is preferred in applications that simulate the effects of hydraulic line dynamics. Results from this equation are compared with those from the conventional valve equation, whose dependent variable is flow. A computer program of the valve equations includes spool stops, leakage spool clearances, and dead-zone characteristics of overlap spools.

Numerical solution of axisymmetric boattail flow fields with plume simulators

Turbulent separating flows over axisymmetric afterbody-boattail configurations with solid sting plume simulators are computed with a time-dependent finite-difference method to solve the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The Reynolds stress terms are replaced with a two-layer eddy viscosity model including a relaxation formula to model the nonequilibrium effects of the separated flow. The mesh is alined with the boattail body through an analytic transformation which accommodates a wide variety of boattail geometries. Numerical results for a series of boattail geometries over a wide range of Reynolds number (140,000 to 140 million) are presented and, when possible, compared with experimental data or independent numerical results.

Expressions for the precession quantities based upon the IAU /1976/ system of astronomical constants

The structure of the expressions usually employed in calculating the effects of precession is examined, and a method is outlined for revising the expressions to account for changes in the fundamental astronomical constants. It is shown that the basic set of parameters, upon which depend the lengthy polynomials for computing the mean obliquity of data and the elements of the precession matrix, consists of the mean obliquity, the speed of general precession in longitude at a fixed epoch, and the system of planetary masses. Special attention is given to the motion of the ecliptic pole, formulations for a basic epoch as well as an arbitrary epoch, and ecliptic motion relative to the basic epoch. Numerical precession quantities at epoch J2000.0 (JED 2451545.0) are presented which result from the revision of astronomical constants adopted at the XVI General Assembly of the IAU.

SEAHT: A computer program for the use of intersecting arcs of altimeter data for sea surface height refinement

The SEAHT program is designed to process multiple passes of altimeter data with intersecting ground tracks, with the estimation of corrections for orbital errors to each pass such that the data has the best overall agreement at the crossover points. Orbit error for each pass is modeled as a polynomial in time, with optional orders of 0, 1, or 2. One or more passes may be constrained in the adjustment process, thus allowing passes with the best orbits to provide the overall level and orientation of the estimated sea surface heights. Intersections which disagree by more than an input edit level are not used in the error parameter estimation. In the program implementation, passes are grouped into South-North passes and North-South passes, with the North-South passes partitioned out for the estimation of orbit error parameters. Computer core utilization is thus dependent on the number of parameters estimated for the set of South-North arcs, but is independent on the number of North-South passes. Estimated corrections for each pass are applied to the data at its input data rate and an output tape is written which contains the corrected data.

Probing the solar wind with radio measurements of the second moment field

The dependence of spectral broadening on anisotropic electron-density irregularities and velocity fluctuations in the solar wind is investigated on the basis of results for a second moment mutual coherence function obtained by a parabolic-equation method. It is found that although anisotropic irregularities and wind-velocity fluctuations decrease the bandwidth of the spectrum relative to that for isotropic irregularities and no velocity fluctuations, the shape of the spectrum remains unchanged. Examination of the frequency dependence and shape of a computed angular spectrum indicates that the electron-density spectrum is consistent with a power law having a spectral index close to the value appropriate for the Kolmogorov spectrum. It is proposed that multiple-station observations of some total field be employed to measure the solar wind.

Comparative study of solar optics for paraboloidal concentrators

Different analytical methods for computing the flux distribution on the focal plane of a paraboloidal solar concentrator are reviewed. An analytical solution in algebraic form is also derived for an idealized model. The effects resulting from using different assumptions in the definition of optical parameters used in these methodologies are compared and discussed in detail. These parameters include solar irradiance distribution (limb darkening and circumsolar), reflector surface specular spreading, surface slope error, and concentrator pointing inaccuracy. The type of computational method selected for use depends on the maturity of the design and the data available at the time the analysis is made.

Postseismic rebound due to creep of the lower lithosphere and asthenosphere

Postseismic surface deformations are attributed to the inelastic flow of the subcrustal regions of the Earth following an earthquake. A multilayer representation of the Earth's rheological properties is used in conjunction with a finite element computational scheme to calculate time dependent displacements and strains subsequent to a strike slip earthquake. The deviatoric stress strain relations for the uppermost layer is assumed elastic. Lower layers are assumed to be, in order of increasing depth, a standard, linear, three element, viscoelastic solid; a linear viscoelastic fluid; and another elastic solid. Physically these layers correspond to the upper lithosphere, lower lithosphere, asthenosphere, and lower mantle, respectively. Elastic dilatational properties are assumed throughout. Appreciable postseismic displacements, possibly approaching meters, for large earthquakes, arise from viscoelastic relaxation following sudden coseismic slip. Furthermore, compared to the simpler case of an elastic lithosphere over a viscoelastic asthenosphere and the near fault postseismic shear, strain is increased, by a factor of two or more in some cases, by the presence of a viscoelastic lower lithosphere. Also, the duration of postseismic straining is increased by the relatively slow relaxation of this layer.

Photoexcitation of lasers and chemical reactions for NASA missions: A theoretical study

The possibility of obtaining CW laser oscillation by optical pumping in the infrared at an elevated gas pressure is reviewed. A specific example utilizing a mixture of CO and NO gases is included. The gas pressures considered are in excess of several atmospheres. Laser frequency tuning over a broad region becomes possible at such elevated gas pressures due to collisional broadening of the amplifying transitions. The prior-rate and surprisal analysis are applied to obtain detailed VV and VT rates for CO and NO molecules and the transfer rates in a CO-NO gas mixture. The analysis is capable of giving temperature dependence of the rate constants. Computer estimates of the rates are presented for vibrational levels up to v = 50. The results show that in the high-lying vibrational states the VV transfer rates with Delta nu = 2 become appreciable.

The STD/MHD codes - Comparison of analyses with experiments at AEDC/HPDE, Reynolds Metal Co., and Hercules, Inc

Data from sufficiently well-instrumented, short-duration experiments at AEDC/HPDE, Reynolds Metal Co., and Hercules, Inc., are compared to analyses with multidimensional and time-dependent simulations with the STD/MHD computer codes. These analyses reveal detailed features of major transient events, severe loss mechanisms, and anomalous MHD behavior. In particular, these analyses predicted higher-than-design voltage drops, Hall voltage overshoots, and asymmetric voltage drops before the experimental data were available. The predictions obtained with these analyses are in excellent agreement with the experimental data and the failure predictions are consistent with the experiments. The design of large, high-interaction or advanced MHD experiments will require application of sophisticated, detailed and comprehensive computational procedures in order to account for the critical mechanisms which led to the observed behavior in these experiments.

On the theory of self-focusing of powerful wave beams in nonhomogeneous media

The stationary self-focusing of the Gauss wave beam is considered in a nonhomogeneous medium in the case of local nonlinearity. Equations of the aberrationless approximation for the beam width, the field on the beam axis and the refraction factor are integrated on a computer. Self-focusing in dependence of the nonlinearity level and initial divergence, the dissipation, the length of nonhomogeneity of the dielectric permittivity nondisturbed by a beam, and the diffraction parameter are investigated.

The computation of rotational conical flows

A method based on the Clebsch velocity decomposition is presented to solve the steady, inviscid, supersonic flow field about arbitrary conical geometries. The system of equations developed, although formally equivalent to the Euler equations, retains the computational efficiency of type-dependent potential flow solutions. Accurate rotational-flow solutions are developed using shock-fitting procedures at the bow and imbedded waves along with special treatment of the vortical layer. Solutions are presented for several high Mach number conical flows and compared with existing Euler solutions and experimental data.
