Oak Ridge National Laboratory Modernizing the Kokkos Build System: Using CMake to Encapsulate the Complexity of Build Instructions for Performance Portable Libraries

Kokkos, a C++ library focused on performance portability, requires a build system that can work with a variety of compilers and hardware. Ideally, users need only select the compiler and architecture and should not have to know or specify how programs using Kokkos are built. CMake can be used to create a flexible, robust build system and automatically configures compilers and settings based on the user’s inputs. Nevertheless, Kokkos’ requirements as a performance portability library for the build system exceed CMake’s current capabilities. This report describes the requirements, solutions, and testing of various implementations to create a CMake-based build system suitable for Kokkos. It compares the strengths and shortcomings of the approaches and evaluates the implementations with respect to the requirements. Because no solution was found to meet all of the requirements, the Kokkos team engaged with the CMake development team to discuss and plan a path toward support for performance-portable build systems in CMake in the future.

Lithium Diffusion in Silicon Encapsulated with Graphene

The model of a graphene (Gr) sheet putting on a silicon (Si) substrate is used to simulate the structures of Si microparticles wrapped up in a graphene cage, which may be the anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBS) to improve the high-volume expansion of Si anode materials. The common low-energy defective graphene (d–Gr) structures of DV5–8–5, DV555–777 and SV are studied and compared with perfect graphene (p–Gr). First-principles calculations are performed to confirm the stable structures before and after Li penetrating through the Gr sheet or graphene/Si-substrate (Gr/Si) slab. The climbing image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method is performed to evaluate the diffusion barrier and seek the saddle point. The calculation results reveal that the d–Gr greatly reduces the energy barriers for Li diffusion in Gr or Gr/Si. The energy stability, structural configuration, bond length between the atoms and layer distances of these structures are also discussed in detail.

Nonflammable potting, encapsulating and/or conformal coating compound

Compound formed from dimethylpolysiloxane, ammonium phosphate, and ground glass is nonflammable in air environment and self-extingushing in atmosphere of 60 percent oxygen and 40 percent nitrogen. Material may have applications for reducing industrial fire hazards and should interest aircraft industry, machinery manufacturers, and automotive industry.

Development of organic non-flammable spacecraft potting, encapsulating and conformal coating compounds

The overall program objective was to develop a flexible compound which not only functioned in a manned aerospace environment as an effective electrical insulation, but whose flammability characteristics in 16.5 psia, 60% oxygen/40% nitrogen were evidenced by rapid self-extinguishment and minimal thermal (pyrolysis) degradation. The following polymeric matrices were examined in depth: fluoroelastomers, modified fluoroelastomers, silicone RTV's, and modified silicone and fluorosilicone RTV's. Almost none of these systems burned in air, but all burned in 6.2 psia oxygen. Inorganic, organic, and inorganic/organic additives were evaluated in conjunction with these polymers in order to achieve the required survival in the 16.5 psia 60/40 environment. Depending upon formulations, it was possible to achieve nonflammable products when tested in the 1/4 in. x 1/4 in. x 1 in. configuration, even up to and including 16.5 psia oxygen. However, in order to assure this level of flame resistance, it was found necessary to heavily load the matrix with the additives. This resulted in a significant reduction in mechanical properties and large increases in viscosities. Optimization of formulations to obtain a suitable balance between these properties and flammability resistance led to the final selection of Formulation 387 as the primary system.
