BOREAS TGB-12 Soil Carbon and Flux Data of NSA-MSA in Raster Format

The BOREAS TGB-12 team made measurements of soil carbon inventories, carbon concentration in soil gases, and rates of soil respiration at several sites. This data set provides: (1) estimates of soil carbon stocks by horizon based on soil survey data and analyses of data from individual soil profiles; (2) estimates of soil carbon fluxes based on stocks, fire history, drain-age, and soil carbon inputs and decomposition constants based on field work using radiocarbon analyses; (3) fire history data estimating age ranges of time since last fire; and (4) a raster image and an associated soils table file from which area-weighted maps of soil carbon and fluxes and fire history may be generated. This data set was created from raster files, soil polygon data files, and detailed lab analysis of soils data that were received from Dr. Hugo Veldhuis, who did the original mapping in the field during 1994. Also used were soils data from Susan Trumbore and Jennifer Harden (BOREAS TGB-12). The binary raster file covers a 733-km 2 area within the NSA-MSA.

A 0.18 micrometer CMOS Thermopile Readout ASIC Immune to 50 MRAD Total Ionizing Dose (SI) and Single Event Latchup to 174MeV-cm(exp 2)/mg

Radiation hardened by design (RHBD) techniques allow commercial CMOS circuits to operate in high total ionizing dose and particle fluence environments. Our radiation hard multi-channel digitizer (MCD) ASIC (Figure 1) is a versatile analog system on a chip (SoC) fabricated in 180nm CMOS. It provides 18 chopper stabilized amplifier channels, a 16- bit sigma-delta analog-digital converter (SDADC) and an on-chip controller. The MCD was evaluated at Goddard Space Flight Center and Texas A&M University's radiation effects facilities and found to be immune to single event latchup (SEL) and total ionizing dose (TID) at 174 MeV-cm(exp 2)/mg and 50 Mrad (Si) respectively.

Assessing Flow Formability of Aerospace Aluminum Alloys via DIC Tensile Testing

Over the past decade, NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) has championed integrally stiffened cylinder (ISC) technology for single-piece, cryogenic tank barrels on launch vehicles. The current investigation aims to extend the hybrid spin/shear/flow forming process to aircraft fuselage structures, a damage tolerance critical application. The WF Maschinenbau VUD-600® vertical spin/flow forming facility recently established at LaRC represents a reasonable sub-scale facsimile of the ISC deformation process for research and development (R&D) purposes. The objective of this study is to explore whether tensile testing with digital image correlation (DIC) is an effective way to rank the formability of candidate aerospace Al alloys and expedite empirical forming trials. Specific tensile data, such as reduction of area, strain hardening exponent, and modulus of resilience, are used as formability metrics for a variety of alloy/temper/product form combinations. Results from high-strength aluminum alloys AA 2139, AA 2050, AA 2043 and AA 2219 are compared with the medium-strength, highly formable AA 6061 benchmark. Rolled, forged and cast preform materials in both the -O temper (fully annealed) and -T4 temper (solution-treated, quenched, and naturally aged) conditions are evaluated. AA 2139 plate in the -T4 temper emerges as the top-ranked material, based on the criteria selected. Starting with preforms in the -T4 temper will result in flow-formed material exhibiting mechanical properties closer to aircraft fuselage requirements. The optimum balance between strength and damage tolerance may also be achieved via post-forming procedures that avoid quenching and stretching.

Lunar Nuclear Reactor Neutron Fluence and Gamma Dose Estimates

NASA aims to deploy a fission reactor on the lunar surface by 2030 to generate 100 kWe of power for at least 10 years without maintenance or refueling. To assess system and subsystem survivability according to those requirements, a model of the reactor pallet was created in the radiation transport code MCNP to determine the neutron fluences and gamma doses that the materials and systems would be exposed to. The model was based on the 2025 government design. The model indicated that the control drum motors, Brayton cycle engines, and pipes and valves would be exposed to neutron fluences of 1×10 15 – 1×10 16 n/cm 2 per year and gamma doses ranging from 10 to 500 Mrad per year. The electronics box housing the instrumentation and control elements is expected to receive 1×10 14 – 1×10 15 n/cm 2 per year and gamma doses in the range of 1–5 Mrad per year. These doses necessitate that the control drum motors, Brayton cycle engines, valve components, control electronics, and other components be radiation-hardened (>10 16 n/cm 2 and >10 Mrad gamma dose) or additionally shielded to survive the 10-year lunar mission.

Stringent cleaning technique assures reliable epoxy bond

For reliable aluminum bonding to withstand stress, the mating surfaces are carefully cleaned, etched, rinsed and dried. An epoxy and hardener designed for metal-to-metal bonding is then used for a rigid assembly.

Plastic films for reflective surfaces reproduced from masters

Accurate reproduction in plastic of the surface of the optical master to which a reflective finish may be applied is done by using backing from any suitable material to which cured plastic will adhere tightly. Plastics used for reflectors should be of the thermosetting or catalytically hardened type.

Joining of Nickel and Nickel-Base Alloys

Nickel and nickel- base alloys are amenable to joining with many of the familiar joining processes. Some new joining processes also have been used successfully. In general, conventional joining procedures are used with only slight required modifications, depending on the particular alloy to be welded. However, some special precautions must be taken. Harmful materials must be removed from the joint or surrounding areas or they may damage the weld and the nearby heated parent metal. Some high-strength age hardenable alloys are prone to cracking in or near joint areas, unless the material is in the proper condition of heat treatment prior to joining operations. Foreign material and flux residues left from joining operations can cause trouble in subsequent service if not removed. Procedures for joining these alloys have been developed that eliminate or minimize the usual difficulties that have been experienced. When proper procedures are employed, joining of nickel and nickel- base alloys can be performed satisfactorily.
