Behavioral Health and Performance at NASA JSC: Recent Successes and Future Plan for BHP Research and Operations

The Behavioral Health and Performance discipline at NASA Johnson Space Center is organized into two distinct Divisions (Biomedical Research and Environmental Science Division and Space and Clinical Operations Division) but is integrated and interrelated in its day‐to‐day work. Ongoing operations supporting NASA's spaceflight goals benefit from the research portfolios that address risks to mission success. Similarly, these research portfolios are informed by operations to ensure investigations stay relevant given the dynamic environment of spaceflight. There are many success stories that can be presented where initial work begun as a BHP Research project, and funded through the Human Research Program, was fully implemented in operations or addressed an operational need. Examples include improving effectiveness of the debriefings used within Mission Control by the Mission Operations Directorate and countermeasures for fatigue management. There is also ongoing collaboration with research and operations for developing selection methods for future generation astronauts, and to enhance and inform the current family support function. The objective of this panel is to provide examples of recent success stories, describe areas where close collaboration is benefitting ongoing research and operations, and summarize how this will come together as NASA plans for the one year ISS mission - a unique opportunity for both BHP operations and research to learn more about preparing and supporting crewmembers for extended missions in space. The proposed panel will be comprised of six presentations, each describing a unique aspect of research or operations and the benefits to current and future spaceflight.

Fission Battery Initiative: Research and Development Plan

The Fission Battery Initiative has been established by the Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s) Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate [6] to define, focus, and coordinate research and development (R&D) of technologies that can fully achieve battery-like functionality for nuclear energy systems. The notion of a “fission battery” conveys a vision focused on realizing very simple “plug-and-play” nuclear systems that can be integrated into a variety of applications requiring affordable, reliable energy in the form of electricity and/or heat and function without operations and maintenance staff. In order to formalize the desired functionality, the initiative has adopted the following key attributes to be achieved: economic, standardized, installed, unattended and reliable

KSC Education Technology Research and Development Plan

Educational technology is facilitating new approaches to teaching and learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Cognitive research is beginning to inform educators about how students learn providing a basis for design of more effective learning environments incorporating technology. At the same time, access to computers, the Internet and other technology tools are becoming common features in K-20 classrooms. Encouraged by these developments, STEM educators are transforming traditional STEM education into active learning environments that hold the promise of enhancing learning. This document illustrates the use of technology in STEM education today, identifies possible areas of development, links this development to the NASA Strategic Plan, and makes recommendations for the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Education Office for consideration in the research, development, and design of new educational technologies and applications.

Establishment of an Intertribal Technical Energy Providers Network (Final Technical Report)

The Midwest Tribal Energy Resources Association (MTERA) embarked on a 5-year (extended to 7-year) initiative aimed at advancing Tribal energy resilience and sustainability through intertribal collaboration. By bringing together Tribes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan (EPA Region 5 Tribes), the project's scope encompassed organizational growth, governance and management formalization and enhancement, and the planning and deployment of energy-related services to Member Tribes. MTERA strategically pursued four key objectives to fulfill its mission: 1. Clearinghouse Development: Creation of a centralized hub offering valuable information, education, and outreach for Tribal communities and their neighbors. 2. Policy Liaison: Serving as a vital link between federal and state agencies to contribute to the formulation of inclusive energy policies that ensure both Tribal and regional energy success. 3. Energy Planning and Research: Providing essential support for energy planning, researching financing opportunities, and exploring effective procurement strategies. 4. Training Support: Facilitating training and apprenticeship initiatives to empower the Tribal workforce and enhance community capabilities.

Guide for Pressure-Sensitive Paint Testing at NASA Ames Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel

Optical measurement techniques have become a standard option for wind tunnel tests. Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) is a mature test technique and a common experimental technique in many wind tunnels to measure the global mean static pressure on a model. PSP is a valuable tool when a more detailed distribution of the pressure is needed rather than the conventional pressure taps alone. Planning for a test with optical-based techniques can present new challenges even for experienced customer. The purpose of this paper is to provide a resource to the wind tunnel testing community and customers interested in obtaining PSP measurements on a wind tunnel model at the NASA Ames Research Center’s Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. An overview of PSP mechanics, a list of requirements for ones considering PSP measurements, and PSP deliverable details are specified.

Soybean genomics research community strategic plan: A vision for 2024–2028

Abstract This strategic plan summarizes the major accomplishments achieved in the last quinquennial by the soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] genetics and genomics research community and outlines key priorities for the next 5 years (2024–2028). This work is the result of deliberations among over 50 soybean researchers during a 2‐day workshop in St Louis, MO, USA, at the end of 2022. The plan is divided into seven traditional areas/disciplines: Breeding, Biotic Interactions, Physiology and Abiotic Stress, Functional Genomics, Biotechnology, Genomic Resources and Datasets, and Computational Resources. One additional section was added, Training the Next Generation of Soybean Researchers, when it was identified as a pressing issue during the workshop. This installment of the soybean genomics strategic plan provides a snapshot of recent progress while looking at future goals that will improve resources and enable innovation among the community of basic and applied soybean researchers. We hope that this work will inform our community and increase support for soybean research.

ORNL Infrastructure: Status Update on BEA Research Reactor Cask Planning Activities Completed During FY 2025

This report documents Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL’s) FY 2025 progress toward establishing readiness to use the Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) Research Reactor (BRR) shipping cask in support of the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF). The BRR cask will provide a new shared infrastructure capability for transporting irradiated fuels and materials between ORNL and Idaho National Laboratory (INL), thereby supporting NSUF’s mission of enabling user access to advanced nuclear research facilities. In FY 2025, ORNL advanced the regulatory, contractual, safety review, and planning activities necessary to qualify its facilities and staff for BRR cask handling. Although loaded shipments were delayed due to fabrication lead times for Orano Federal Services LLC’s internal basket hardware, the program progressed to the point where an empty cask dry run is scheduled for October 2025. This dry run represents a critical step in demonstrating ORNL’s ability to receive, handle, and return the BRR cask.

Planning for life sciences research in space

Invitations to participate in planning the NASA Life Sciences Program in Space were mailed to members of the Life Sciences community at large during April 1975. The invitation is related to current planning for Life Sciences research in space during the 1980's, taking into account a use of the Space Shuttle, Spacelab, and the unmanned Biological Experiments Scientific Satellite (BESS). A response form to be completed and returned to NASA by the scientists included questions requesting suggestions on topics-for-research, laboratory equipment, and test specimens. A description of the invitation results is presented, taking into account general response, respondent specialties, laboratory equipment, test specimens, and research objectives. Attention is also given to an Announcement of Opportunities (AO) for the Space Transportation System. The AO was issued by the Office of Space Science in March 1976.
