Simultaneous observations of the BL Lacertae object I Zw 187

Two sets of simultaneous spectra consisting of data obtained with radio, IR, optical, UV and X-ray telescopes were obtained 10 months apart for the X-ray bright BL Lac object IZw 187. In addition, nonsimultaneous observations were made in several of the aforementioned observing bands in order to detect flux variations and galactic light contamination was removed from all observations. The BL Lac component is found to have a weak 3000 A bump superposed on an IR-optical-UV spectrum of slope 0.9. Consistent with the arising of the IR-through-X-ray continuum from a single synchrotron source, the X-ray data fall on or near an extrapolation of this power law. No flux variations have been detected in the flat radio spectrum. Optical and X-ray fluxes are observed to vary by a factor not greater than three, and the shortest variability time scales in these bands are comparable at about one week.

ISEE-3/IMP-8 observations of simultaneous upstream proton events

Upstream 50-200 keV proton events were observed simultaneously by the low energy proton detectors on ISEE-3 and IMP-8, and the gradient from the spin averaged fluxes at the two spacecraft was calculated. The dependence of that gradient upon the angular distributions at IMP-8 was investigated as well as the distance from IMP-8 to the bow shock. The pitch angle distributions are narrow at ISEE-3 and wide and often pancake-shaped at IMP-8 with a peak near 90 degrees. This implies the existence of a weak scattering region about 5-15 earth radii upstream of the earth's bow shock.

Geometric adjustment of simultaneous Doppler-derived range differences

A mathematical model for the use of simultaneous Doppler derived correlated ranges in the geometric mode is presented. The model was tested with data taken during the EDOC-2 campaign with different integration intervals. The results of this adjustment are compared with the EDOC-2 adopted solution and those from an uncorrelated model used earlier to provide more economical calculations. It is shown that the correlated mode is superior to the uncorrelated one when the optimum integration interval of 23 seconds is used.

Evaluation of ultraviolet spectrophotometry for simultaneous analysis of alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes, alkylanthracenes/phenanthrenes and total aromatics in mid-distillate fuels

A rapid ultraviolet spectrophotometric method for the simultaneous determination of aromatics in middistillate fuels was developed and evaluated. In this method, alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes, alkylanthracenes/phenanthracenes and total aromatics were determined from ultraviolet spectra of the fuels. The accuracy and precision were determined using simulated standard fuels with known compositions. The total aromatics fraction accuracy was 5% for a Jet A type fuel and 0.6% for a broadened properties jet turbine type fuel. Precision, expressed as relative standard deviations, ranged from 2.9% for the alkylanthracenes/phenanthrenes to 15.3% for the alkylbenzenes. The accuracy, however, was less for actual fuel samples when compared to the results obtained by a mass spectrometric method. In addition, the ASTM D-1840 method for naphthalenes by ultraviolet spectroscopy was evaluated.

Simultaneous radio scattering and white light observations of a coronal transient

Reports that a coronal transient observed by the Solwind coronagraph off the west limb of the sun was also seen in the spectral broadening observations of the Helois-2 2.3 GHz radio signal. These simultaneous data are compared and applied to studies of the shock front. UT difference images show a time difference of up to 2 h between shock and white light occurrences. Helios and Voyager shock speed measurements are consistent, implying that the event observed by Helios is a shock. These coronal transient data show that the shock front is ahead of the white light front, but additional observations of larger events will contribute information to the understanding of coronal transient evolution as they propagate away from the sun.

The nucleus of M81 - Simultaneous 2.3 and 8.3 GHz Mark III VLBI observations

Mark III very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations have been made of the nucleus in the normal galaxy M81 (NGC 3031) simultaneously at 2.3 and 8.3 GHz, and it was found that nearly 100% of the flux density of the nuclear region originates in an elongated radio core with linear dimensions 1000-4000 AU, dependent on frequency. This galactic nucleus is the most compact observed in any extragalactic source. The position coincides with that of the nucleus at optical and X-ray wavelengths within the larger uncertainties of the latter two. The position angle of the major axis of the M81 nucleus is within 3 deg of 75 deg at 2.3 GHz and within 6 deg of 50 deg at 8.3 GHz and is frequency dependent at the 4 sigma level. These values straddle the 62 deg position angle of the projection on the sky of the rotation axis of the galaxy. The spectrum of the core is slightly inverted, and the length of its major axis decreases with frequency. These results are consistent with the emission's being incoherent electron synchrotron radiation from an inhomogeneous region with an optical depth varying along the rotation axis of the galaxy.

Simultaneous multiple-point velocity measurements using laser-induced iodine fluorescence

A technique is demonstrated for measuring velocity at multiple locations in a plane of a gaseous flowfield using Doppler-shifted absorption with fluorescence detection from iodine molecules, excited by a sheet of tunable single-axial-mode argon-ion laser radiation at 514.5 nm. Measurements were made simultaneously at 10,000 points in an iodine-seeded supersonic flow field with a 100 x 100 element photodiode array camera and were found to agree well with a numerical solution for the velocity field. The accuracy with which a component of velocity can be measured is limited, in the current approach, by the iodine linewidth to about 5 m/sec.

Simultaneous dual baseline differential VLBI

Attention is drawn to the benefits of simultaneous dual baseline radio interferometric measurements for low altitude planetary orbiter navigation. The radio interferometric data types constitute a valuable addition to conventional tracking data in the establishment of orbit-plane orientation, thanks to their measurement of inertial reference cross-track velocity. The present results show that only a few Delta-VLBI measurements, taken at either end of a conventional tracking arc, suffice for the realization of a positional accuracy of better than 1 km for the case of a Venus Orbiting Imaging Radar-type planetary orbiter. This is comparable to Deep Space Net accuracies, despite the use of a shorter baseline.

Extragalactic 1 millimeter sources - Simultaneous observations at centimeter, millimeter, and visual wavelengths

Observations simultaneously made at visual (B, V, and R) wavelengths, at 1, 1.4, and 3.4 mm and at 1.3, 2, 6, and 20 cm of 9 QSOs and BL Lac objects are reported. The range of the millimeter-visual spectral index alpha sub mv was only 0.65-0.82, typical of optically thin synchrotron emission. This may indicate that the electrons radiating synchrotron emission in this portion of the spectrum are not subjected to large radiation losses, and therefore relativistic bulk motion with Doppler factors of about 10 are required. The visual spectral index is much more broadly distributed and typically larger than alpha sub mv. The spectral energy distributions have not changed much in the last two to five years except for 2251+15 and perhaps 0235+164. Only 1749+09 shows a sharp spectral break shortward of 1 mm. Sixteen other sources were observed at 1 mm, of which seven were detected.

ISEE/IMP observations of simultaneous upstream ion events

Propagation of upstream energetic (50-200 keV) ions is analyzed in sixteen events observed simultaneously by solid state detectors on ISEE 3 at about 200 earth radii and on IMP 8 at about 35 earth radii from the earth. Conclusions are based on comparisons of the pitch angle distributions observed at the two spacecraft and transformed into the solar wind frame. They are beamlike at ISEE 3 and are confined to the outward hemisphere. When IMP 8 is furthest from the bow shock, they are also usually beamlike, or hemispheric. However, when IMP 8 is closer to the bow shock, pancakelike distributions are observed. This systematic variation in the IMP 8 pitch angle distributions delimits a scattering region l less than about 15 earth radii upstream of the earth's bow shock (l measured along the interplanetary magnetic field) that dominates ion propagation, influences the global distribution of fluxes in the foreshock, and may play a role in acceleration of the ions. When IMP 8 is beyond l of about 15 earth radii the propagation appears to be essentially scatter-free between IMP 8 and ISEE 3; this is deduced from the absence of earthward fluxes at IMP 8 as well as the tendency for the spin-averaged fluxes to be comparable at the two spacecraft.

Ozone profile intercomparison based on simultaneous observations between 20 and 40 km

The vertical distribution of stratospheric ozone has been simultaneously measured by means of five different instruments carried on the same balloon payload. The launches were performed from Gap during the intercomparison campaign conducted in June 1981 in southern France. Data obtained between altitudes of 20 and 40 km are compared and discussed. Vertical profiles deduced from Electrochemical Concentration Cell sondes launched from the same location by small balloons and from short Umkehr measurements made at Mt Chiran (France) are also included in this comparison. Systematic differences of the order of 20 percent between ozone profiles deduced from solar u.v. absorption and in situ techniques are found.

The velocity and the density spectrum of the solar wind from simultaneous three-frequency IPS observations

Density inhomogeneities in the solar wind cause fluctuations regarding the emission of small diameter radio sources. Such fluctuations are called interplanetary scintillation (IPS). IPS has been studied to obtain information on both the solar wind and on the radio sources. In the present investigation it is attempted to extract information about the solar wind from simultaneous IPS observations at three radio frequencies and a single antenna. Data were recorded at frequencies of 270 MHz, 340 MHz, and 470 MHz on a 91 m telescope. Five different radio sources were observed. The observations are compared with theoretical predictions for spectra, cross-spectra, and cross-correlations using weak scattering theory and various models for the wavenumber spectrum of density inhomogeneities in the solar wind. Good fits are obtained over the observed wavenumbers to a spectrum modeled as a power law.

Simultaneous U, B, V, and X-ray measurements of a burst from 4U/MXB 1636-53

Data are presented on the first simultaneous X-ray and optical burst to be measured in more than one optical color. Various analyses agree that, to a first approximation, the optical burst is produced through blackbody reprocessing of the X-ray burst, with a short delay. Depending on the technique used, the value of the delay is 2 or 3 s. The smearing of the optical signal is determined to be less than 3 s. The temperature of the optical reprocessor ranges from approximately 25,000 K at quiescence to approximately 50,000 K at burst maximum. An extinction toward the source is derived from the color-color diagram, suggesting a distance greater than or approximately equal to 2 kpc. The projected effective area of the blackbody reprocessor is approximately 5 x 10 to the 21st (D/5 kpc)-squared sq cm. The fraction of the total X-ray burst energy converted into optical energy at all wavelengths is, within an order of magnitude, approximately 3 percent. These parameters are discussed in relation to the 4 hr orbital periodicity in the system reported by Pedersen et al. (1981).

The physiological effects of simultaneous exposures to heat and vibration

Determination of the effects of exposure to vibration on the body's ability to handle heat stress, and, if so, identification of the specific vibration parameters (frequency and intensity) for both whole-body (wbv) and segmental-body vibration (sbv) that would have the most detrimental effect on the body's ability to maintain thermal homeostasis were studied. Rectal and skin temperatures, heart rates, localized sweat rates, arm-segment blood perfusion rates, respiration rates, oxygen uptakes, and respiratory exchange ratios were measured in six men (22 to 33 yr) during simultaneous exposures to heat and vibration - either wbv or sbv, and during a heated 50 min recovery period. The heat conditions were T (sub db) = 43.5 + or - 0.5 C (mean + or S.E.M.), and RH = 20 + or - 4%. All vibration exposures were divided into two exposure conditions - identical frequencies but at a high intensity (HI) and a low intensity (LI) level. The HI wbv exposure was for 25 min/day at 5 Hz, 0.37 g-rms; 10 Hz, 0.46 g-rms; 16 Hz, 0.72 g-rms; 30 Hz, 1.40 g-rms; 80 Hz, 3.70 g-rms. The LI wbv exposure was for 2.5 hr/day at the same frequencies but at the following accelerations: 0.14 g-rms; 0.18 g-rms; 0.28 g-rms; 0.55 g-rms; 1.44 g-rms. During the sbv the subject stood and grasped a vibrating, in the Z-axis, hand grip with both hands.

Algorithms for solving large sparse systems of simultaneous linear equations on vector processors

Very efficient algorithms for solving large sparse systems of simultaneous linear equations have been developed for serial processing computers. These involve a reordering of matrix rows and columns in order to obtain a near triangular pattern of nonzero elements. Then an LU factorization is developed to represent the matrix inverse in terms of a sequence of elementary Gaussian eliminations, or pivots. In this paper it is shown how these algorithms are adapted for efficient implementation on vector processors. Results obtained on the CYBER 200 Model 205 are presented for a series of large test problems which show the comparative advantages of the triangularization and vector processing algorithms.

Simultaneous analysis and design

Optimization techniques are increasingly being used for performing nonlinear structural analysis. The development of element by element (EBE) preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) techniques is expected to extend this trend to linear analysis. Under these circumstances the structural design problem can be viewed as a nested optimization problem. There are computational benefits to treating this nested problem as a large single optimization problem. The response variables (such as displacements) and the structural parameters are all treated as design variables in a unified formulation which performs simultaneously the design and analysis. Two examples are used for demonstration. A seventy-two bar truss is optimized subject to linear stress constraints and a wing box structure is optimized subject to nonlinear collapse constraints. Both examples show substantial computational savings with the unified approach as compared to the traditional nested approach.

Simultaneous elastic and photoelastic calibration of birefringent orthotropic model materials

Transmission photoelastic analysis of composite models has been shown in recent years to be a viable stress analysis method for composite structures. However, difficulties in the fabrication of the model materials require the development of efficient mechanical and optical calibration procedures. In this paper, the methods for measuring elastic and photoelastic constants of composites are briefly reviewed. Then a new method, utilizing a relatively small calibration specimen, is described. In this method, electrical resistance strain gauges are mounted at selected points of a half-plane model and photoelastic measurements and strain readings are simultaneously taken. The data are processed by a least-squares procedure to yield the elastic and photoelastic constants. Comparison of results obtained by the proposed method with the results from conventional tests shows good agreement.

Short-term climate variability and atmospheric teleconnections from satellite-observed outgoing longwave radiation. I Simultaneous relationships. II - Lagged correlations

Attention is given to the low-frequency variability of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) fluctuations, their possible correlations over different parts of the globe, and their relationships with teleconnections obtained from other meteorological parameters, for example, geopotential and temperature fields. Simultaneous relationships with respect to the Southern Oscillation (Namais, 1978; Barnett, 1981) signal and the reference OLR fluctuation over the equatorial central Pacific are investigated. Emphasis is placed on the relative importance of the Southern Oscillation (SO) signal over preferred regions. Using lag cross-correlation statistics, possible lagged relationships between the tropics and midlatitudes and their relationships with the SO are then investigated. Only features that are consistent with present knowledge of the dynamics of the system are emphasized. Certain features which may not meet rigorous statistical significance tests but yet are either expected a priori from independent observations or are predicted from dynamical theories are also explored.
