Applying energy justice metrics to photovoltaic materials research

Abstract Achieving the energy transition sustainably requires addressing how new technologies may impact justice in the energy system. The Justice Underpinning Science and Technology Research (JUST-R) metrics framework was recently proposed to aid researchers in considering justice in early-stage research on energy technologies; however, case study evaluations of the framework revealed a desire from researchers to see metrics specialized to particular fields of study. Here, we refine metrics from the JUST-R framework to enhance its applicability to photovoltaic (PV) materials research. Metrics are reorganized to align with aspects of the research process (e.g., research team or source materials). For most metrics, baseline values are suggested to enable researchers to compare their project to competing technologies or standards at their institutions. These refinements are integrated into a tool to facilitate easier understanding and evaluation of justice considerations in early-stage PV research, which can serve as a template for evaluating other energy technologies. Colorado (Pueblo) Regional DAC Hub TA-1: Feasibility (Phase 0a) (Final Technical Report)

This project supports the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) mission to reduce the environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes, contributing to the goal of achieving net-zero emissions across the U.S. economy. The primary objective is to conduct a feasibility study for a Regional Direct Air Capture (DAC) Hub in the Southern Colorado region, northeast of Pueblo. The geographic construct of this hub is based on the Denver-Julesburg Basin – a geological area where a significant number of geological storage studies have been conducted (See Figure 1). The project will leverage the work of Project Eos, a CarbonSAFE Phase III study led by the Colorado School of Mines and CarbonAmerica. The DAC Hub aims to capture, store, and/or utilize at least 1,000,000 tonnes of CO 2 from the atmosphere annually. To achieve this, the project team is designing a system with an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year. This feasibility-stage project will formulate the Regional DAC Hub concept and team to conduct the relevant analysis, networking and community stakeholder engagement necessary to advance the project to the design stage.

The Ontologies Community of Practice: A CGIAR Initiative for Big Data in Agrifood Systems

Heterogeneous and multidisciplinary data generated by research on sustainable global agriculture and agrifood systems requires quality data labeling or annotation in order to be interoperable. As recommended by the FAIR principles, data, labels, and metadata must use controlled vocabularies and ontologies that are popular in the knowledge domain and commonly used by the community. Despite the existence of robust ontologies in the Life Sciences, there is currently no comprehensive full set of ontologies recommended for data annotation across agricultural research disciplines. In this paper, we discuss the added value of the Ontologies Community of Practice (CoP) of the CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture for harnessing relevant expertise in ontology development and identifying innovative solutions that support quality data annotation. The Ontologies CoP stimulates knowledge sharing among stakeholders, such as researchers, data managers, domain experts, experts in ontology design, and platform development teams.

A multimodal large language model for materials science

Understanding and predicting the properties of inorganic materials is crucial for accelerating advancements in materials science and driving applications in energy, electronics and beyond. Integrating material structure data with language-based information through multimodal large language models (LLMs) offers great potential to support these efforts by enhancing human–artificial intelligence interaction. However, a key challenge lies in integrating atomic structures at full resolution into LLMs. In this work, we introduce MatterChat, a versatile structure-aware multimodal LLM that unifies material structural data and textual inputs into a single cohesive model. MatterChat uses a bridging module to effectively align a pretrained universal machine learning interatomic potential with a pretrained LLM, reducing training costs and enhancing flexibility. Our results demonstrate that MatterChat greatly improves performance in material property prediction and human–artificial intelligence interaction, surpassing general-purpose LLMs such as GPT-4. We also demonstrate its usefulness in applications such as more advanced scientific reasoning and step-by-step material synthesis.

A hierarchical evaluation framework for assessing climate simulations relevant to the energy-water-land nexus (Final Report)

The overarching goal was to construct a hierarchy of new and well-tested metrics and analysis tools that support both fundamental and use-inspired research. Motivating this goal was a convergence of needs from climate scientists and stakeholders alike for a systematic, robust framework of model evaluation and diagnosis to provide scientific insights, inform model development, support best practices for the use of climate model outputs, and facilitate communication of climate information in the evolving landscapes of multi-model, multi-resolution, and large ensemble simulations that generate terabytes of data for any single climate run. Steps toward attaining these goals benefited from expertise and established capability of the project team, which included leadership of the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP) and the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), development of hierarchical model evaluation approaches, and successful research in the analysis and diagnosis of climate model skill, as well as the understanding and modeling of regional climate processes in North America. As part of the overarching goal, the project worked to disseminate a suite of methodologies, algorithms, and software components that the wider community can employ to advance climate science and applications. With rigorous demonstration, the evaluation framework and the mix of standard and high risk / high reward approaches helped form the basis for future development of a computationally enabled user-friendly system for community use.

Advanced Processing of Rare Earth Elements and Critical Minerals from Acid Mine Drainage Feedstocks

Ongoing work by the project team identified a process for extracting rare earths and critical mineral (REE/CM) concentrates from acid mine drainage from coal mines, a major stream pollutant. The process removes harmful metals and separates REE/CM into economically attractive concentrates. This project explored the processing of those concentrates into individually separated, high purity metals, suitable for domestic manufacturers. The team brought unique experience in working with AMD-based feedstocks since the inception of USDOE’s coal-based REE/CM program in 2016. The project team has pioneered the recovery of rare earth/critical minerals (REE/CM) from acid mine drainage (AMD). This environmentally beneficial strategy will incentivize AMD treatment while recovering materials critical to the Nation’s defense and advanced manufacturing industries. In addition, the project will investigate the co-production of five high purity CMs from AMD, namely Co, Mn, Li, Cr, Ge. This team’s upstream and midstream recovery and processing technology has been demonstrated at the continuous, small scale pilot scale. In conjunction with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, the team is constructing a full-scale, integrated, 500 gpm AMD treatment plant coupled with an REE/CM facility that will produce 21 tons REE/CM per year. Commissioning is scheduled for September 2021. This will provide feedstock for the team’s proprietary downstream processes that met the project objective: production of individually separated, high purity (ISHP) REE/CM oxides and their further processing to elemental metals (REM). To facilitate entry into the U.S. market, we have teamed up with companies that would use our products to strengthen their domestic supply chains and grow REE/CM based manufacturing in the U.S. They include Rockwell Automation, Rivian, Endress+Hauser, Inc., Northrop Grumman and Hela Novel Metals.

X-Ray Scattering and Electron Microscopy Characterization

This research added to the understanding of p-type activation in GaN vertical transistors for power applications by identifying key defects which inhibit p-type activation. We also developed an approach to eliminate such defects with the appropriate annealing treatments. Additionally we addressed the limitations of GaN substrates used in the production of these devices and exploited the non-uniform distribution of substrate defects to better understand the relationship between device performance and defect density. Through this work, we also established how irregularities – step bunching and haze formation – during epitaxial growth are related to defects in the underlying substrates. Our charter was to work with several other teams to determine connections between defects and performance of GaN-based vertical transistors and have several presentations and publications as well as manuscripts and follow-up collaborations. The research at UCLA supported two full graduate students, one of whom is graduating this summer as well as three undergraduate students.
