Food System Trade Study for a Near-Term Mars Mission

This paper evaluates several food system options for a near-term Mars mission, based on plans for the 120-day BIO-Plex test. Food systems considered in the study are based on the International Space Station (ISS) Assembly Phase and Assembly Complete food systems. The four systems considered are: 1) ISS assembly phase food system (US portion) with individual packaging without salad production; 2) ISS assembly phase food system (US portion) with individual packaging, with salad production; 3) ISS assembly phase food system (US portion) with bulk packaging, with salad production; 4) ISS assembly complete food system (US portion) with bulk packaging with salad and refrigeration/freezing. The food system options are assessed using equivalent system mass (ESM), which evaluates each option based upon the mass, volume, power, cooling and crewtime requirements that are associated with each food system option. However, since ESM is unable to elucidate the differences in psychological benefits between the food systems, a qualitative evaluation of each option is also presented.

Translation and Rotation Trade Off in Human Visual Heading Estimation

We have previously shown that, during simulated curvilinear motion, humans can make reasonably accurate and precise heading judgments from optic flow without either oculomotor or static-depth cues about rotation. We now systematically investigate the effect of varying the parameters of self-motion. We visually simulated 400 ms of self-motion along curved paths (constant rotation and translation rates, fixed retinocentric heading) towards two planes of random dots at 10.3 m and 22.3 m at mid-trial. Retinocentric heading judgments of 4 observers (2 naive) were measured for 12 different combinations of translation (T between 4 and 16 m/s) and rotation (R either 8 or 16 deg/s). In the range tested, heading bias and uncertainty decrease quasilinearly with T/R, but the bias also appears to depend on R. If depth is held constant, the ratio T/R can account for much of the variation in the accuracy and precision of human visual heading estimation, although further experiments are needed to resolve whether absolute rotation rate, total flow rate, or some other factor can account for the observed -2 deg shift between the bias curves.

4D PhaseCam(Trade Mark) Capabilities: Modal Analysis and Multiple-Wavelength Mirror Phasing

The PhaseCam is a dynamic phase shifting interferometer system manufactured by 4D Technology Corporation that is capable of very fast data acquisition. This rapid acquisition extends the capability of conventional interferometry to enable measurement in unstable environments, the generation of phase movies of surface shape and to facilitate modal analysis of structures. The PhaseCam hardware and software have been modified for MSFC to include synchronous modal optical measurement and analysis. These modifications will be discussed and data presented. The dynamic range of a phase shifting measurement is limited by local slope and pixel sampling to lambda/4 wave steps. Two-wavelength techniques can increase the effective measurement wavelength from microns to tens of centimeters and permit the phasing of mirror segments. A two wavelength PhaseCam will be discussed and measurement results presented.

Optimization Shield Materials Trade Study for Lunar/Gateway Mission

The great cost of added radiation shielding is a potential limiting factor in many deep space missions. For this enabling technology, we are developing tools for optimized shield design over multi-segmented missions involving multiple work and living areas in the transport and duty phase of various space missions. The total shield mass over all pieces of equipment and habitats is optimized subject to career dose and dose rate constraints. Preliminary studies of deep space missions indicate that for long duration space missions, improved shield materials will be required. The details of this new method and its impact on space missions and other technologies will be discussed. This study will provide a vital tool for evaluating Gateway designs in their usage context. Providing protection against the hazards of space radiation is one of the challenges to the Gateway infrastructure designs. We will use the mission optimization software to scope the impact of Gateway operations on human exposures and the effectiveness of alternate shielding materials on Gateway infrastructure designs. It is being proposed to use Moon and the Lagrange points as the hub for deep space missions. This study will provide a guide to the effectiveness of multifunctional materials in preparation to more detailed geometry studies in progress.

Cycle Trades for Nuclear Thermal Rocket Propulsion Systems

Nuclear fission has been used as a reliable source for utility power in the United States for decades. Even in the 1940's, long before the United States had a viable space program, the theoretical benefits of nuclear power as applied to space travel were being explored. These benefits include long-life operation and high performance, particularly in the form of vehicle power density, enabling longer-lasting space missions. The configurations for nuclear rocket systems and chemical rocket systems are similar except that a nuclear rocket utilizes a fission reactor as its heat source. This thermal energy can be utilized directly to heat propellants that are then accelerated through a nozzle to generate thrust or it can be used as part of an electricity generation system. The former approach is Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) and the latter is Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP), which is then used to power thruster technologies such as ion thrusters. This paper will explore a number of indirect-NTP engine cycle configurations using assumed performance constraints and requirements, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each cycle configuration, and present preliminary performance and size results. This paper is intended to lay the groundwork for future efforts in the development of a practical NTP system or a combined NTP/NEP hybrid system.

System Safety Hazards Assessment in Conceptual Program Trade Studies

Providing a program in the concept development phase with a method of determining system safety benefits of potential concepts has always been a challenge. Lockheed Martin Space and Strategic Missiles has developed a methodology for developing a relative system safety ranking using the potential hazards of each concept. The resulting output supports program decisions with system safety as an evaluation criterion with supporting data for evaluation. This approach begins with a generic hazards list that has been tailored for the program being studied and augmented with an initial hazard analysis. Each proposed concept is assessed against the list of program hazards and ranked in three derived areas. The hazards can be weighted to show those that are of more concern to the program. Sensitivities can be also be determined to test the robustness of the conclusions

Conformal Cryogenic Tank Trade Study for Reusable Launch Vehicles

Future reusable launch vehicles may be lifting bodies with non-circular cross section like the proposed Lockheed-Martin VentureStar(tm). Current designs for the cryogenic tanks of these vehicles are dual-lobed and quad-lobed tanks which are packaged more efficiently than circular tanks, but still have low packaging efficiencies with large gaps existing between the vehicle outer mold line and the outer surfaces of the tanks. In this study, tanks that conform to the outer mold line of a non-circular vehicle were investigated. Four structural concepts for conformal cryogenic tanks and a quad-lobed tank concept were optimized for minimum weight designs. The conformal tank concepts included a sandwich tank stiffened with axial tension webs, a sandwich tank stiffened with transverse tension webs, a sandwich tank stiffened with rings and tension ties, and a sandwich tank stiffened with orthogrid stiffeners and tension ties. For each concept, geometric parameters (such as ring frame spacing, the number and spacing of tension ties or webs, and tank corner radius) and internal pressure loads were varied and the structure was optimized using a finite-element-based optimization procedure. Theoretical volumetric weights were calculated by dividing the weight of the barrel section of the tank concept and its associated frames, webs and tension ties by the volume it circumscribes. This paper describes the four conformal tank concepts and the design assumptions utilized in their optimization. The conformal tank optimization results included theoretical weights, trends and comparisons between the concepts, are also presented, along with results from the optimization of a quad-lobed tank. Also, the effects of minimum gauge values and non-optimum weights on the weight of the optimized structure are described in this paper.

Performance Trade-Offs for MBG Using Different Bandgap Pairs

Present GAInP2/GAAs cell grown on Ge (or GaAs) substrates have demonstrates high efficiency, However, the individual bandgaps (1.85 eV, 1.42 eV respectively) are not the optimum match to convert the AM0 spectrum efficiently, although by reducing the thickness of the GaInP2 cell, good efficiencies have been achieved. Within the III-V alloys, modeling shows that several dual junction cells, comprising different bandgap pairs, could give higher efficiency. This paper outlines the modeling used, the bandgap pairs selected, and projections for the AM0 efficiency assuming that the effects of lattice mismatch associated with the bandgap can be reduced. We also present preliminary data on I-V performance for the selected top and bottom cells and for some full cascade cells. We have included some characterization results to check the bandgaps and lattice strain, to check how closely the fabricated cells conform to the model,

High and Dry: Trading Water Vapor, Fuel and Observing Time for SOFIA

The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is NASA's next generation airborne astronomical observatory. The facility consists of a 747-SP modified to accommodate a 2.5 meter telescope. SOFIA is expected to fly an average of 140 science flights per year over it's 20 year lifetime, and will commence operations in early 2005. The SOFIA telescope is mounted aft of the wings on the port side of the aircraft and is articulated through a range of 20 deg to 60 deg of elevation. A significant problem in future SOFIA operations is that of scheduling Facility Instrument (E) flights in support of the SOFIA General Investigator (GI) program. GIs are expected to propose small numbers of observations, and many observations must be grouped together to make up single flights. Approximately 70 GI flight per year are expected, with 5-15 observations per flight.

Design trades for mission/DSN antenna supportability using TIGRAS

In this paper, we describe the capability and usage of TIGRAS. To illustrate the usage of TIGRAS, a hypothetical mission called Jovian Moon Explorer (JME) was created. We discuss how DSN supportability affects mission and spacecraft design and how a project such as JME can use TIGRAS in an early design phase to design for better DSN coverage for its future operation.

Performance trades for long-haul communication in deep space

A study was undertaken as part of the NASA BEACON architecture project, in order to find the most cost-effective methods for satisfying the anticipated demand. This paper serves to report preliminary conclusions from the study, which were obtained using simplified conditions sufficient to narrow down the field of competing options. Additional work will be required to obtain realistic treatments for actual selection among alternatives.
