MAGIK Animation of Robotic Operations for Flight SpaceX-21 to ISS

The MAGIK Robotic analysis team provides kinematic feasibility assessments for the ISS and has produced an animation to evaluate Extravehicular Robotics (EVR) activities for SpaceX (SpX)-21 flight. Flight SpX-21 includes a Dragon 2 vehicle docked to Node 2 Zenith (N2Z) International Docking Adapter (IDA) and consists of the delivery of the NanoRacks Airlock Assembly (NRAL). Robotic operations shown include Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) Trunk extraction of the NRAL and maneuvering through the ISS Port Corridor to Node 3 Port (N3P). Extravehicular Activities not shown will complete the install to N3P. There is no disposal payload for this flight.

Starling Animation

NASA’s Starling mission is advancing the readiness of various technologies for cooperative groups of spacecraft – also known as distributed missions, clusters, or swarms. Starling will demonstrate technologies to enable multipoint science data collection by several small spacecraft flying in swarms. The six-month mission will use four CubeSats in low-Earth orbit to test four technologies that let spacecraft operate in a synchronized manner without resources from the ground. The technologies will advance the following capabilities. • Network Communication • Cluster Flight Control • Relative navigation • Distributed Spacecraft Autonomy The Starling mission will test whether the technologies work as expected, what their limitations are, and what developments are still needed for CubeSat swarms to be successful. This animation illustrates Starling mission operations, offering an overview of each technology being demonstrated.

Animation of Fermilab's Accelerator Complex

The 6,800-acre Fermilab site is home to a chain of particle accelerators that provide particle beams to numerous experiments and R&D programs. This 2-minute animation explains how the proton source provides the particles that get accelerated and travel through the accelerator complex at close to the speed of light. Scientists use these beams to generate protons, neutrons, muons, pions and neutrinos for various research areas across the Fermilab site. More than 4,000 scientists from over 50 countries use Fermilab and its particle accelerators, detectors and computers for their research. More information is at http://www.fnal.gov/pub/science/.

Establishment of Microbeam Radiation Therapy at a Small-Animal Irradiator

Microbeam radiation therapy is a preclinical concept in radiation oncology. It spares normal tissue more effectively than conventional radiation therapy at equal tumor control. The radiation field consists of peak regions with doses of several hundred gray, whereas doses between the peaks (valleys) are below the tissue tolerance level. Widths and distances of the beams are in the submillimeter range for microbeam radiation therapy. A similar alternative concept with beam widths and distances in the millimeter range is presented by minibeam radiation therapy. Although both methods were developed at large synchrotron facilities, compact alternative sources have been proposed recently.

Real-time three-dimensional color doppler evaluation of the flow convergence zone for quantification of mitral regurgitation: Validation experimental animal study and initial clinical experience

BACKGROUND: Pitfalls of the flow convergence (FC) method, including 2-dimensional imaging of the 3-dimensional (3D) geometry of the FC surface, can lead to erroneous quantification of mitral regurgitation (MR). This limitation may be mitigated by the use of real-time 3D color Doppler echocardiography (CE). Our objective was to validate a real-time 3D navigation method for MR quantification. METHODS: In 12 sheep with surgically induced chronic MR, 37 different hemodynamic conditions were studied with real-time 3DCE. Using real-time 3D navigation, the radius of the largest hemispherical FC zone was located and measured. MR volume was quantified according to the FC method after observing the shape of FC in 3D space. Aortic and mitral electromagnetic flow probes and meters were balanced against each other to determine reference MR volume. As an initial clinical application study, 22 patients with chronic MR were also studied with this real-time 3DCE-FC method. Left ventricular (LV) outflow tract automated cardiac flow measurement (Toshiba Corp, Tokyo, Japan) and real-time 3D LV stroke volume were used to quantify the reference MR volume (MR volume = 3DLV stroke volume - automated cardiac flow measurement). RESULTS: In the sheep model, a good correlation and agreement was seen between MR volume by real-time 3DCE and electromagnetic (y = 0.77x + 1.48, r = 0.87, P <.001, delta = -0.91 +/- 2.65 mL). In patients, real-time 3DCE-derived MR volume also showed a good correlation and agreement with the reference method (y = 0.89x - 0.38, r = 0.93, P <.001, delta = -4.8 +/- 7.6 mL). CONCLUSIONS: real-time 3DCE can capture the entire FC image, permitting geometrical recognition of the FC zone geometry and reliable MR quantification.

Modulation of Neuroinflammation by Low-Dose Radiation Therapy in an Animal Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Recently, several studies have reported that low-dose radiation therapy (RT) suppresses the release of proinflammatory cytokines in inflammatory-degenerative disorders, including Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is the most common cause of dementia, and neuroinflammation is one of the major contributing factors in AD pathogenesis. Therefore, low-dose RT may be used clinically for treating AD. However, the appropriate doses, effects, and underlying mechanisms of RT in AD have not been determined. In this study, we aimed to determine the appropriate RT dose and schedule for AD treatment and to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of low-dose RT in AD.

Patterns of Gene Content and Co-occurrence Constrain the Evolutionary Path toward Animal Association in Candidate Phyla Radiation Bacteria

Studying the genetic differences between related microorganisms from different environment types can indicate factors associated with their movement among habitats. This is particularly interesting for bacteria from the Candidate Phyla Radiation because their minimal metabolic capabilities require associations with microbial hosts.

Cavemen Animations for Nuclear Weapons Exhibit: Templates for VISIBLE Team

We use a couple of cavemen to explain the concept of deterrence, which has been with humans from the beginning. The interaction between the two cavemen will demonstrate how deterrence can discourage violence by instilling doubt and fear of the consequences escalating such violence further.

Reburning of Animal Waste Based Biomass with Coal for NO x Reduction, Part I: Feedlot Biomass (FB) and Coal:FB Blends

Cattle biomass (CB or manure from cattle) is proposed as reburn fuel under slightly fuel-rich conditions. The CB includes wastes from cattle feedlots (cattle grown in feedlots to slaughter weights of 450–640 kg) termed as Feedlot Biomass (FB) and cattle wastes from dairy farms termed as Dairy Biomass (DB). NOx emissions from coal-fired power plants can be reduced by using pure CB and Coal:CB mixtures as reburn fuels (10~30% by heat) injected after the primary combustion region. Experiments with Coal:CB mixtures as reburn fuels were performed using the 30 kW burner facility. Part I deals with results from experiments using pure FB and Coal:FB blends as reburn fuels while Part II presents results on extent of NOx reduction using pure DB and Coal:DB blends as reburn fuels (RF). In the current work, results on NOx emission are presented with FB and Coal:FB blends as RF. The parametric studies include: equivalence ratio in reburn zone (ERRBZ), vitiated air, angle of reburn nozzles, presence and absence of heat exchangers (HEXs), and baseline NOx concentration. The optimum operating conditions for FB reburning were found to be conditions with vitiation at ERRBZ = 1.1 with 45° upward counter-current injection in the presence of HEXs. NOx emissions were reduced by as much as 96%.
