Experiences Using OpenMP Based on Compiler Directed Software DSM on a PC Cluster

In this work we report on our experiences running OpenMP (message passing) programs on a commodity cluster of PCs (personal computers) running a software distributed shared memory (DSM) system. We describe our test environment and report on the performance of a subset of the NAS (NASA Advanced Supercomputing) Parallel Benchmarks that have been automatically parallelized for OpenMP. We compare the performance of the OpenMP implementations with that of their message passing counterparts and discuss performance differences.

CET93 and CETPC: An interim updated version of the NASA Lewis computer program for calculating complex chemical equilibria with applications

The NASA Lewis chemical equilibrium program with applications continues to be improved and updated. The latest version is CET93. This code, with smaller arrays, has been compiled for use on an IBM or IBM-compatible personal computer and is called CETPC. This report is intended to be primarily a users manual for CET93 and CETPC. It does not repeat the more complete documentation of earlier reports on the equilibrium program. Most of the discussion covers input and output files, two new options (ONLY and comments), example problems, and implementation of CETPC.

Photovoltaic Systems Test Facilities: Existing capabilities compilation

A general description of photovoltaic systems test facilities (PV-STFs) operated under the U.S. Department of Energy's photovoltaics program is given. Descriptions of a number of privately operated facilities having test capabilities appropriate to photovoltaic hardware development are given. A summary of specific, representative test capabilities at the system and subsystem level is presented for each listed facility. The range of system and subsystem test capabilities available to serve the needs of both the photovoltaics program and the private sector photovoltaics industry is given.

Generating Customized Verifiers for Automatically Generated Code

Program verification using Hoare-style techniques requires many logical annotations. We have previously developed a generic annotation inference algorithm that weaves in all annotations required to certify safety properties for automatically generated code. It uses patterns to capture generator- and property-specific code idioms and property-specific meta-program fragments to construct the annotations. The algorithm is customized by specifying the code patterns and integrating them with the meta-program fragments for annotation construction. However, this is difficult since it involves tedious and error-prone low-level term manipulations. Here, we describe an annotation schema compiler that largely automates this customization task using generative techniques. It takes a collection of high-level declarative annotation schemas tailored towards a specific code generator and safety property, and generates all customized analysis functions and glue code required for interfacing with the generic algorithm core, thus effectively creating a customized annotation inference algorithm. The compiler raises the level of abstraction and simplifies schema development and maintenance. It also takes care of some more routine aspects of formulating patterns and schemas, in particular handling of irrelevant program fragments and irrelevant variance in the program structure, which reduces the size, complexity, and number of different patterns and annotation schemas that are required. The improvements described here make it easier and faster to customize the system to a new safety property or a new generator, and we demonstrate this by customizing it to certify frame safety of space flight navigation code that was automatically generated from Simulink models by MathWorks' Real-Time Workshop.

Apollo/Skylab suit program management systems study. Volume 2: Cost analysis

The business management methods employed in the performance of the Apollo-Skylab Suit Program are studied. The data accumulated over the span of the contract as well as the methods used to accumulate the data are examined. Management methods associated with the monitoring and control of resources applied towards the performance of the contract are also studied and recommended upon. The primary objective is the compilation, analysis, and presentation of historical cost performance criteria. Cost data are depicted for all phases of the Apollo-Skylab program in common, meaningful terms, whereby the data may be applicable to future suit program planning efforts.

Matrix methods and automation in structural engineering

The partial differential equations of motion of shell structures subject to arbitrary loads may be extremely difficult or even impossible to solve. Since the digital computer is now an available tool for the structural engineer, current research has been directed toward methods which involve matrix formulation of large systems of algebraic equations and matrix solutions for discrete elements rather than the solution of the partial differential equations. These methods require rapid and accurate computer solutions. Recognizing the accuracy problems inherent in working with large matrices, a comprehensive survey of available computer programs was performed for large matrix inversion and for eigenvalue and eigenvector solutions under a Research Grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the techniques are developed in this paper for using these programs most efficiently for structural applications. The contents of the paper include: automation of matrix compilation, methods of very large matrix inversion and solution of simultaneous equation, and techniques for finding eigenvalues and vectors. In addition, a finite element stiffness matrix approach developed at the Denver Research Institute for both plates and shells subject to arbitrary dynamic loads is described as it was instrumented with complete automation on the digital computer.

Identification and evaluation of educational uses and users for the STS. Educational planning for utilization of space shuttle ED-PLUSS

A planning and feasibility study to identify and document a methodology needed to incorporate educational programs into future missions and operations of the space transportation system was conducted. Six tasks were identified and accomplished during the study. The task statements are as follows: (1) potential user identification, (2) a review of space education programs, (3) development of methodology for user involvement, (4) methods to encourage user awareness, (5) compilation of follow-on ideas, and (6) response to NASA questions. Specific recommendations for improving the educational coverage of space activities are provided.

Preliminary test results with a Stirling Laboratory Research Engine

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has designed, assembled, and initiated testing of a Stirling Laboratory Research Engine (SLRE). This preprototype engine provides a research tool to support the development of a broad range of analytical modeling and experimental efforts. The SLRE is a horizontally opposed, two-piston, single-acting Stirling engine with a split crankshaft drive mechanism. The paper discusses the preliminary results obtained during engine motoring tests and compares these results with two different analytical prediction models. Comparisons are made between experiment, the classical Schmidt analysis, and the JPL Stirling Cycle Analysis Model (SCAM). SCAM is a computerized one-dimensional, cyclic, compressible flow model of the SLRE and consists of a compilation of individual component subroutines. The formulation and current state of development of the SCAM program is briefly described.

AgRISTARS: Foreign commodity production forecasting. Country summary report, Australia

Australia is one of the world's major growers and exporters of wheat and as such is one of the countries of interest in the AgRISTARS program which endeavors to develop technology to estimate crop production using aerospace remote sensing. A compilation of geographic, political, and agricultural information on Australia is presented. Also included is a summary of the aerospace remote sensing, meteorological, and ground-observed data which were collected with respect to Australia, as well as a summary of contacts between AgRISTARS and Australia personnel.

Graphics Software For VT Terminals

VTGRAPH graphics software tool for DEC/VT computer terminal or terminals compatible with it, widely used by government and industry. Callable in FORTRAN or C language, library program enabling user to cope with many computer environments in which VT terminals used for window management and graphic systems. Provides PLOT10-like package plus color or shade capability for VT240, VT241, and VT300 terminals. User can easily design more-friendly user-interface programs and design PLOT10 programs on VT terminals with different computer systems. Requires ReGis graphics set terminal and FORTRAN compiler.

Venus mapping

Semicontrolled image mosaics of Venus, based on Magellan data, are being compiled at 1:50,000,000, 1:10,000,000, 1:5,000,000, and 1:1,000,000 scales to support the Magellan Radar Investigator (RADIG) team. The mosaics are semicontrolled in the sense that data gaps were not filled and significant cosmetic inconsistencies exist. Contours are based on preliminary radar altimetry data that is subjected to revision and improvement. Final maps to support geologic mapping and other scientific investigations, to be compiled as the dataset becomes complete, will be sponsored by the Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program and/or the Venus Data Analysis Program. All maps, both semicontrolled and final, will be published as I-maps by the United States Geological Survey. All of the mapping is based on existing knowledge of the spacecraft orbit; photogrammetric triangulation, a traditional basis for geodetic control on planets where framing cameras were used, is not feasible with the radar images of Venus, although an eventual shift of coordinate system to a revised spin-axis location is anticipated. This is expected to be small enough that it will affect only large-scale maps.

This document is a compilation of papers presented at the Third NASA Advanced Composites Technology (ACT) Conference. The ACT Program is a major multi-year research initiative to achieve a national goal of technology readiness before the end of the decade. Conference papers recorded results of research in the ACT Program in the specific areas of automated fiber placement, resin transfer molding, textile preforms, and stitching as these processes influence design, performance, and cost of composites in aircraft structures. Papers sponsored by the Department of Defense on the Design and Manufacturing of Low Cost Composites (DMLCC) are also included in Volume 2 of this document.

Easing The Calculation Of Bolt-Circle Coordinates

Bolt Circle Calculation (BOLT-CALC) computer program used to reduce significant time consumed in manually computing trigonometry of rectangular Cartesian coordinates of holes in bolt circle as shown on blueprint or drawing. Eliminates risk of computational errors, particularly in cases involving many holes or in cases in which coordinates expressed to many significant digits. Program assists in many practical situations arising in machine shops. Written in BASIC. Also successfully compiled and implemented by use of Microsoft's QuickBasic v4.0.

Lessons Learned Entry: Hypergolic Propellant Related Spills and Fires

The attached report is a compilation of all credible, unintentional hypergolic fluid related spills, fires, and explosions from the Apollo Program, the Space Shuttle Program, Titan Program, and a few other programs. Spill sites include the following government facilities: KSC, JSC, WSTF, VAFB, CCAFS, EAFB, Little Rock AFB, and McConnell AFB. The root causes and consequences of the incidents contained in this document vary drastically; however, certain "themes" can be deduced and utilized for future hypergolic propellant handling. Some of those common "themes" are summarized below: (1) Improper configuration control and complacency can lead to being falsely comfortable with a system (2) Communication breakdown can escalate an incident to a level where injuries occur and/or hardware is damaged (3) Improper propulsion system and ground support system designs can destine a system for failure (4) Improper training of technicians, engineers, and safety personnel can put lives in danger (5) Improper PPE, spill protection, and staging of fire extinguishing equipment can result in unnecessary injuries or hardware damage if an incident occurs (6) Improper procedural oversight, development, and adherence to the procedure can be detrimental and quickly lead to an undesirable incident (7) Improper local cleanliness or compatibility can result in fires or explosions The items listed above are only a short list of the issues that should be recognized prior to handling of hypergolic fluids or processing of vehicles containing hypergolic propellants. The summary of incidents in this report is intended to cover many more issues than those listed above that have been found during nearly the entire spectrum. of hypergolic propellant and/or vehicle processing.

A Compilation of MATLAB Scripts and Functions for MACGMC Analyses

The primary aim of the current effort is to provide scripts that automate many of the repetitive pre- and post-processing tasks associated with composite materials analyses using the Micromechanics Analysis Code with the Generalized Method of Cells. This document consists of a compilation of hundreds of scripts that were developed in MATLAB (The Mathworks, Inc., Natick, MA) programming language and consolidated into 16 MATLAB functions. (MACGMC). MACGMC is a composite material and laminate analysis software code developed at NASA Glenn Research Center. The software package has been built around the generalized method of cells (GMC) family of micromechanics theories. The computer code is developed with a user-friendly framework, along with a library of local inelastic, damage, and failure models. Further, application of simulated thermo-mechanical loading, generation of output results, and selection of architectures to represent the composite material have been automated to increase the user friendliness, as well as to make it more robust in terms of input preparation and code execution. Finally, classical lamination theory has been implemented within the software, wherein GMC is used to model the composite material response of each ply. Thus, the full range of GMC composite material capabilities is available for analysis of arbitrary laminate configurations as well. The pre-processing tasks include generation of a multitude of different repeating unit cells (RUCs) for CMCs and PMCs, visualization of RUCs from MACGMC input and output files and generation of the RUC section of a MACGMC input file. The post-processing tasks include visualization of the predicted composite response, such as local stress and strain contours, damage initiation and progression, stress-strain behavior, and fatigue response. In addition to the above, several miscellaneous scripts have been developed that can be used to perform repeated Monte-Carlo simulations to enable probabilistic simulations with minimal manual intervention. This document is formatted to provide MATLAB source files and descriptions of how to utilize them. It is assumed that the user has a basic understanding of how MATLAB scripts work and some MATLAB programming experience.

RadLab Platform: Investigating Space Radiation

The RadLab Project, initiated by the Open Science Data Repository (OSDR) for Space Biology at NASA Ames Research Center (osdr.nasa.gov), aims to be an ongoing compilation of radiation data relevant to human space flight. Sponsored by the NASA Human Research Program, RadLab serves as the latest database in this domain. RadLab is intended to serve the needs of both the space radiation detector and space radiation biology communities. The RadLab architecture is being designed to accommodate data both from low Earth orbit (LEO) and beyond low Earth orbit (BLEO). Our long-term vision entails the establishment of a sustainable database receiving continuous updates through APIs connecting to other databases, as well as individual investigator contributions via a RadLab submission portal, modeled on the OSDR (https://osdr.nasa.gov/bio/submission-sso-login.html). In addition to serving as a resource for space biologists and space radiation physicists, such a database would facilitate the deployment of AI algorithms to study the impact of location in space and within spacecraft on the ambient space radiation field. The ultimate goal is to develop predictive dosimetry algorithms for future BLEO missions.

Analytical techniques and instrumentation, a compilation

Procedures for conducting materials tests and structural analyses of aerospace components are presented as a part of the NASA technology utilization program. Some of the subjects discussed are as follows: (1) failures in cryogenic tank insulation, (2) friction characteristics of graphite and graphite-metal combinations, (3) evaluation of polymeric products in thermal-vacuum environment, (4) erosion of metals by multiple impacts with water, (5) mass loading effects on vibrated ring and shell structures, (6) nonlinear damping in structures, and (7) method for estimating reliability of randomly excited structures.

The Galilean Satellite Geological Mapping Program, 1984

About 40 investigators from various universities, research institutes, and government offices in the United States, England, Germany, and Italy are compiling maps of the Galilean satellites. All maps are at a scale of 1:5 million except for three of the Io maps, where high resolution pictures permit compilation of selected areas at larger scales. Guidelines for mapping Ganymede are discussed.
