Advances in Ka-Band Communication System for CubeSats and SmallSats

A study was performed that evaluated the feasibility of Ka-band communication system to provide CubeSat/SmallSat high rate science data downlink with ground antennas ranging from the small portable 1.2m/2.4m to apertures 5.4M, 7.3M, 11M, and 18M, for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to Lunar CubeSat missions. This study included link analysis to determine the data rate requirement, based on the current TRL of Ka-band flight hardware and ground support infrastructure. Recent advances in Ka-band transceivers and antennas, options of portable ground stations, and various coverage distances were included in the analysis. The link/coverage analysis results show that Cubesat/Smallsat missions communication requirements including frequencies and data rates can be met by utilizing Near Earth Network (NEN) Ka-band support with 2 W and high gain (>6 dBi) antennas.

Beaconless Optical Communication System Constraints

Deep-space optical communication will enable increased science return and public engagement for robotic and manned missions. The IROC project is studying a beaconless optical communication system for Mars data downlink. A star tracker provides the optical communications pointing information in place of an uplink targeting beacon. The configuration presented in this paper includes a star tracker that is aligned co-boresighted with the optical communication axis. This co-boresight configuration was not discussed in prior work, as it was assumed that large Sun-Probe-Earth keep-out angle requirements for operation of the star tracker would cause significant communication outages. In this paper it is shown that the use of an optimal mechanical mounting angle combined with an advanced star tracker has the capability to yield up to 92% communication availability for an example five-year Mars mission.

Entanglement-Assisted Communication System for NASA's Deep-Space Missions

For this project we have studied various forms of quantum communication, and quantum-enhanced classical communication. In particular, we have performed the first realization of a novel quantum protocol, superdense teleportation. We have also showed that in some cases, the advantages of superdense coding (which enhances classical channel capacity by up to a factor of two) can be realized without the use of entanglement. Finally, we considered some more advanced protocols, with the goal to realize 'superactivation' - two entangled channels have capabilities beyond the sum of the individual channels-and conclude that more study is needed in this area.

A Framework for Effective Science Communication and Outreach Strategies and Dissemination of Research Findings for Marine Energy Projects

Marine energy is an emerging renewable energy industry with the potential to produce 2300 terawatt-hours per year from resources within the United States. As development and testing of marine energy devices advance, regulatory and permitting decision-makers are concerned about the uncertainty surrounding the potential environmental effects resulting from the introduction of these novel devices in coastal and riverine environments. The Triton Initiative researches and provides recommendations for environmental monitoring technologies and methods to inform industry stakeholders with the data necessary to permit the testing of marine energy systems. Effective dissemination of the research findings is essential for improving the accessibility of data to stakeholders who may use the results to inform policy decisions, yet few frameworks for conducting science communications for marine energy projects exist. In this paper, we present tools, channels, and tactics for developing a science communication framework for marine energy projects, or similar areas of study, using the Triton Initiative’s pilot science communication program as a case study. By leveraging existing bodies of work in disciplines such as communications theory, marketing, public relations, and social science, the presented framework includes audience identification and analysis; channel development, including a website, blog, newsletter, social media, and webinars and presentations; and metrics for determining success. Outcomes from one year of Triton’s case study are presented, including the most effective tactics and lessons learned.

Interaction and Communication of Agents in Networks and Language Complexity Estimates

Knowledge acquisition and sharing are arguably the most critical activities of communicating agents. We report about our on-going project featuring knowledge acquisition and sharing among communicating agents embedded in a network. The applications we target range from hardware robots to virtual entities such as internet agents. Agent experiments can be simulated using a convenient simulation language. We analyzed the complexity of communicating agent simulations using Java and Easel. Scenarios we have studied are listed below. The communication among agents can range from declarative queries to sub-natural language queries. 1) A set of agents monitoring an object are asked to build activity profiles based on exchanging elementary observations; 2) A set of car drivers form a line, where every car is following its predecessor. An unsafe distance cm create a strong wave in the line. Individual agents are asked to incorporate and apply directions how to avoid the wave. 3) A set of micro-vehicles form a grid and are asked to propagate information and concepts to a central server.

A Lunar Communications and Navigation Satellite Concept for the Robotic Lunar Exploration Program

The Second Robotic Lunar Exploration Program (RLEP) mission has two primary objectives. Broadly stated, they are "To See the Light" and "To Touch the Ice", meaning one mission objective is to survey the lighting conditions on the rim of a candidate crater over the course of a year, and the second objective is to descend into th.! s crater to search for water ice. The Space Communications Program Office at NASA/GSFC is supporting the RLEP-2 Project by developing a communications and navigation architecture for the mission. The primary candidate crater studied is the Shackleton Crater near the South Pole of the Moon. The rim of this crater has approximately 14 contiguous days of visibility to the Earth over the course of a month, while mission elements in the crater have no line of sight to either the Earth or potentially an element on the rim of the crater. One solution studied is to launch a relay spacecraft with RLEP-2 to provide communications and navigation services to the elements on the lunar surface. To support operations concepts requiring long duration contacts between the relay and the elements in the crater, an inclined elliptical orbit originally conceived by Todd Ely a t JPL was chosen for the relay. The orbit was adjusted to lower the maximum range while maintaining its "frozen" nature, meaning once placed in this orbit little delta-V is required for orbit maintenance. The orbital parameters were adjusted such that the relay has visibility into the crater for approximately 8.7 hours of the 12 hour orbital period. The relay satellite design draws heavily upon heritage concepts and hardware to achieve a very low risk implementation. The design concept is a 3-axis spacecraft that is capable of supporting return communication links from multiple surface elements concurrently through a four-element S-Band Multiple Access phased array with two forward links provided through single dedicated elements. The payload is a bent-pipe relay with beamforming performed on the ground (Earth). To mitigate concerns with multipath observed during Mars missions, the preliminary design employs PN-spread signal structures which have been used successfully by Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) users for simultaneous real-time and recorded data playback. Details of the relay communication trade studies and rationale for the selected design elements are discussed in the paper.

Enabling Realistic Communications Evaluations for ADMS

Increasing penetration levels of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems are creating challenges in system operation. Currently, wired or proprietary wireless communications are used by advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) to detect the state of the system and control the DERs for optimal operation. Wireless communications are an alternative solution that can enable connectivity between the dispersed assets used in distribution system applications. As demand for the seamless integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) continues to increase, proper networking and communications systems are becoming important to support the DER infrastructure. This report summarizes validation of a private wireless LTE network in a laboratory environment. The purpose of this work is to 1) demonstrate the effectiveness of private wireless LTE communication for grid applications and 2) provide a means of evaluating latency and overall performance of wireless communication in grid applications. First, private wireless LTE communication was validated in a direct transfer trip relaying scenario as an example of one-way communications using grid equipment. This study provided a baseline understanding of the variation in latency for seven different kinds of wireless scenarios shown in Figure A below. As expected, weak (attenuated) wireless signal-based communication yielded the widest ranges in latency. When higher priority was set for the trip signal communication, this resulted in lower latency in communication timing. In the final phase of this project, the private wireless LTE network was validated using two-way communications in an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) testbed which was developed in the ESIF at NREL. The purpose of this was to study the impact of wireless communication on grid performance.

Logically Parallel Communication for Fast MPI+Threads Applications

Supercomputing applications are increasingly adopting the MPI+threads programming model over the traditional "MPI everywhere" approach to better handle the disproportionate increase in the number of cores compared with other on-node resources. In practice, however, most applications observe a slower performance with MPI+threads primarily because of poor communication performance. Recent research efforts on MPI libraries address this bottleneck by mapping logically parallel communication, that is, operations that are not subject to MPI's ordering constraints to the underlying network parallelism. Domain scientists, however, typically do not expose such communication independence information because the existing MPI-3.1 standard's semantics can be limiting. Researchers had initially proposed user-visible endpoints to combat this issue, but such a solution requires intrusive changes to the standard (new APIs). The upcoming MPI-4.0 standard, on the other hand, allows applications to relax unneeded semantics and provides them with many opportunities to express logical communication parallelism. Here in this article, we show how MPI+threads applications can achieve high performance with logically parallel communication. Through application case studies, we compare the capabilities of the new MPI-4.0 standard with those of the existing one and user-visible endpoints (upper bound). Logical communication parallelism can boost the overall performance of an application by over 2x.
