The development of autoclave processable, thermally stable adhesives for titanium alloy and graphite composite structures

The A-type polyimide adhesive resin P11B was modified by use of mixed diamines (thio-dianiline and meta phenylene diamine) which provided the desired autoclave processability. This new resin was termed P11BA. It was shown that copolymeric blends of P11BA and Amoco AI-1137 amide-imide resin provided improved adhesive properties when autoclave processed over the properties obtained previously by press bonding with P11B based copolymeric blended adhesives. Properties of bonded assemblies are presented for long-term aging at both elevated and low temperatures, and also stress-rupture tests at elevated temperature.

Proceedings of the workshop on structural composites and nondestructive evaluation

The problems and opportunities in the nondestructive evaluation of composites are covered in formal papers and a summary of the discussion which took place at a Workshop held in Dayton on February 13-14, 1974. The recommendations arrived at by an NMAB Committee, on flaw detection, composite strength, standardization and design information, and research on composite degradation are stated.

Experimental evaluation of the tensor polynomial failure criterion for the design of composite structures

The experimental measures and techniques are described which are used to obtain the strength tensor components, including cubic terms. Based on a considerable number of biaxial pressure tests together with specimens subjected to a constant torque and internal pressure, a modified form of the plane stress tensor polynomial failure equation was obtained that was capable of predicting ultimate strength results well. Preliminary data were obtained to determine the effect of varying post cure times and ambient temperatures (-80 F to 250 F) on the change in two tensor strength terms, F sub 2 and F sub 22. Other laminate configurations yield corresponding variations for the remaining strength parameters.

Foam composite structures

The need to include fire resistant foams into state of the art aircraft interior paneling to increase passenger safety in aircraft fires was studied. Present efforts were directed toward mechanical and fire testing of panels with foam inclusions. Skinned foam filled honeycomb and PBI structural foams were the two constructions investigated with attention being directed toward weight/performance/cost trade-off. All of the new panels demonstrated improved performance in fire and some were lighter weight but not as strong as the presently used paneling. Continued efforts should result in improved paneling for passenger safety. In particular the simple partial filling (fire side) of state-of-the-art honeycomb with fire resistant foams with little sacrifice in weight would result in panels with increased fire resistance. More important may be the retarded rate of toxic gas evolution in the fire due to the protection of the honeycomb by the foam.

A review of issues and strategies in nondestructive evaluation of fiber reinforced structural composites

Techniques for quantitative assessment of the mechanical strength and integrity of fiber composites during manufacture and service and following repair operations are presented. Problems and approaches are discussed relative to acceptance criteria, calibrating standards, and methods for nondestructive evaluation of composites in strength-critical applications. Acousto-ultrasonic techniques provide the methods of choice in this area.

A review of issues and strategies in nondestructive evaluation of fiber reinforced structural composites

The need for advanced nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for quantitative assessment of the mechanical strength and integrity of fiber composites during manufacture and service and following repair operations is stressed. The discussion covers problems and different approaches in regard to acceptance criteria, calibration standards, and methods for NDE of composites in strength critical applications. Finally, it is concluded that acousto-ultrasonic techniques provide the 'methods of choice' in this area.

Photoelastic techniques for the complete determination of stresses in composite structures

Three methods of photoelastic analysis are examined. The first method is an extension of the oblique incidence technique in which the model (or the light beam) is rotated about one of the material symmetry axes. In the second method, transmission and reflection photoelastic responses are combined. The third method requires the drilling of small holes and the determination of the fringe orders at selected points on the hole boundary. The three methods are applied to an orthotropic circular disk under diametral compression. Results are compared with strain gage data.

Structure, composition and thermal state of the crust in Brazil

Aeromagnetic survey data of the Minas Gerais areas were analyzed and compared with MAGSAT anomaly data. Initially the data set was used to determine the thickness of the magnetized crust. The value obtained is in agreement with crustal models derived from deep seismic sounding and gravity data, indicating that the bottom of the magnetized layer occurs close to the Moho transition. An analysis of the long wavelength pattern indicates that the anomalies form a series of lineations along the magnetic E-W. These are shown to be the result of attenuation. On the MAGSAT total intensity map localized anomalies are superimposed onto an anomaly background formed by alternating positive and negative patches. Implementation and testing of analysis software for MAGSAT data are also discussed.

Structure, composition and thermal state of the crust in Brazil

Efforts in support of a geomagnetic survey of the Brazilian area are described. Software to convert MAGSAT data tapes to the Burroughs/B-6700 binary format was developed and tested. A preliminary analysis of the first total intensity anomaly map was performed and methodologies for more intensive analysis were defined. The sources for correlative geological, aeromagnetic, and gravimetric data are described.
