Optical telecommunications-band clock based on neutral titanium atoms

Here, we propose an optical clock based on ultranarrow transitions in neutral titanium, which exhibit small blackbody radiation and quadratic Zeeman shifts and have wavelengths in the S-, C-, and L-telecommunications fiber bands, allowing for integration with robust laser technology. We calculate relevant properties using a high-precision relativistic hybrid method that combines configuration interaction and coupled-cluster approaches. To identify magic wavelengths, we have completed the largest-to-date direct dynamical polarizability calculations. Finally, we identify challenges that arise from magnetic dipole-dipole interactions and describe an approach to overcome them. A telecommunications-band atomic frequency standard will aid the deployment of optical clock networks and clock comparisons over long distances.

AI-Ready Semantic Infrastructure for CEBAF: From CED to PALS Knowledge Graphs

JLab and PNNL are jointly developing an AI-ready data ecosystem that exposes the Continuous Electron Beam Acceleration Facility’s (CEBAF’s) operational configuration, lattice description, and control-system channels to agentic optimization frameworks through a standards-based semantic layer. The effort integrates the existing facility-specific CEBAF Element Database (CED) with extensions of the emerging facility-agnostic Particle Accelerator Lattice Standard (PALS) to produce a knowledge graph (KG) containing coherent, machine-interpretable views of devices, signals, and regions. With this KG, CEBAF’s setpoints, readbacks, and device hierarchies become queryable using a uniform declarative graph query language (e.g., Neo4j Cypher), providing intents and inspectable semantics suitable for agentic control. The resulting graph-backed interfaces will allow autonomous agents to retrieve authoritative machine configurations, reason over device- and signal-level relationships, and execute tuning and diagnostic workflows without bespoke CEBAF-specific logic, thereby delivering a scalable pathway from operational data to trustworthy agentic accelerator tuning frameworks.

Explainable Graph Learning for Particle Accelerator Operations

Particle accelerators are vital tools in physics, medicine, and industry, requiring precise tuning to ensure optimal beam performance. However, real-world deviations from idealized simulations make beam tuning a time-consuming and error-prone process. In this work, we propose an explanation-driven framework for providing actionable insight into beamline operations, with a focus on the injector beamline at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). We represent beamline configurations as heterogeneous graphs, where setting nodes represent elements that human operators can actively adjust during beam tuning, and reading nodes passively provide diagnostic feedback. To identify the most influential setting nodes responsible for differences between any two beamline configurations, our approach first predicts the resulting changes in reading nodes caused by variations in settings, and then learns importance scores that capture the joint influence of multiple setting nodes. Experimental results on real-world CEBAF injector data demonstrate the framework’s ability to generate interpretable insights that can assist human operators in beamline tuning and reduce operational overhead.

Comparison of simulated and experimentally measured detector impulse responses to pulsed x-rays

The Gamma Array Simulation Toolkit (GAST) is a multi-physics software stack comprised of Geant4, MATLAB, and experimentally measured photomultiplier tube (PMT) impulse response waveforms that is used to model and inform the end-toend performance of radiation detector systems. In order to validate the ability of GAST to predict the impulse response of a modeled detector configuration operated in current mode, experimental measurements using the Nevada National Security Site Transformational Diagnostics and Imaging 2 MeV endpoint energy electron linear accelerator (linac) with a tungsten target were performed. Seven different detector configurations consisting of unique combinations of scintillator material, size, reflectivity conditions, presence or absence of light guide, and PMT were evaluated. The resultant impulse response of each detector configuration was recorded and compared to a GAST simulation that emulated the respective linac experiment conditions. The comparison of the experimental and simulated detector impulse responses indicated that GAST can reliably predict detector impulse responses.

We describe a new electron cooler being developed for 2.5 MeV protons at the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), which is a highly re-configurable storage ring at Fermilab. This system would enable the study of magnetized electron cooling in the presence of intense space-charge with transverse tune shifts approaching -0.5 as well as highly non-linear focusing optics in the IOTA ring. We present an overview of the design, simulations and hardware to be used for this project.

Diabatic Valence-Hole States in the C 2 Molecule: “Putting Humpty Dumpty Together Again”

Despite the long history of spectroscopic studies of the C$_2$ molecule, fundamental questions about its chemical bonding are still being hotly debated. The complex electronic structure of C$_2$ is a consequence of its dense manifold of near-degenerate, low-lying electronic states. A global multi-state diabatic model is proposed here to disentangle the numerous configuration interactions within four symmetry manifolds of C$_2$ ($^{1}\Pi_g$, $^{3}\Pi_g$, $^{1}\Sigma_u^+$, and $^{3}\Sigma_u^+$). The key concept of our model is the existence of two "valence-hole" configurations, $2\sigma_g^22\sigma_u^11\pi_{u}^33\sigma_g^2$ for $^{1,3}\Pi_g$ states and $2\sigma_g^22\sigma_u^11\pi_{u}^43\sigma_g^1$ for $^{1,3}\Sigma_u^+$ states that derive from $3\sigma_g\leftarrow2\sigma_u$ electron promotion. The lowest-energy state from each of the four C$_2$ symmetry species is dominated by this type of valence-hole configuration at its equilibrium internuclear separation. Finally, as a result of their large binding energy (nominal bond order of 3) and correlation with the 2s$^2$2p$^2$+2s2p$^3$ separated-atom configurations, the presence of these valence-hole configurations has a profound impact on the $global$ electronic structure and unimolecular dynamics of C$_2$.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering tools to count 5 $f$ electrons of actinides and probe bond covalency

The actinides possess a complex electronic structure, making their chemical and physical properties among the least understood in the periodic table. Advanced spectroscopic tools, able to obtain deep insights into the electronic structure and binding properties of the actinides, are highly desirable. Here, we introduce two sensitive spectroscopic tools: one determines the number of localized 5f electrons on an actinide atom, and another assesses the covalent character of actinide-ligand bonding. Both tools are based on the multiplet structure present in actinide M 4 edge core-to-core resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (CC-RIXS) maps. The spectral intensity of different many-body final-state multiplets directly depends on the local many-electron ground-state symmetry including the local 5 f spin configuration. By comparing U M 4 edge CC-RIXS data for 21 U, Np, Pu and Am compounds, we demonstrate the ability to compare the number of localized 5 f electrons and bond covalency across the actinide series.

Modeling strain and quantum confinement in GaAs/Ga x In 1−x P superlattices for spin-polarized electron sources

In this study, we systematically design and simulate a series of GaAs-based superlattice configurations aimed at enhancing heavy-hole–light-hole band splitting while simultaneously optimizing band alignment to reduce the conduction band barrier, thereby facilitating efficient electron transport. These combined effects are crucial for achieving high electron spin polarization and high quantum efficiency, the two key performance metrics of next-generation spin-polarized electron sources. We investigated three types of superlattice architectures: (1) compressively strained GaAs wells on GaInP barriers, yielding a maximum band splitting of 140 meV, (2) lattice-matched GaAs/GaInP structures, resulting in the maximum band splitting of 75 meV, and (3) tensile strained GaAs wells on GaInP barriers, with a maximum band splitting of 40 meV. The results demonstrate the tunability of heavy-hole–light-hole band splitting and establish a design framework for high-performance spin-polarized photocathodes based on a combination of strain engineering, quantum confinement, and optimized heterostructure design.

Pushing the limits of the periodic table — A review on atomic relativistic electronic structure theory and calculations for the superheavy elements

We review the progress in atomic structure theory with a focus on superheavy elements and their predicted ground state configurations important for an element’s placement in the periodic table. To understand the electronic structure and correlations in the regime of large atomic numbers, it is essential to correctly solve the Dirac equation in strong Coulomb fields, and to take into account quantum electrodynamic effects. We specifically focus on the fundamental difficulties encountered when dealing with the many-particle Dirac equation. We further discuss the possibility for future many-electron atomic structure calculations going beyond the critical nuclear charge $Z_{crit}≈170$, where levels such as the $1s$ shell dive into the negative energy continuum ($E_{nκ} < –m_{e}c^2$). The nature of the resulting Gamow states within a rigged Hilbert space formalism is highlighted.

Enhancing Nitrogen Activation in Electrochemical Reduction: The Role of Rare Earth Oxide Surface Configurations

The pursuit of sustainable ammonia synthesis has prompted the exploration of ambient electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (e-NRR) as an alternative to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. Here, this study conducted a theoretical investigation into the use of rare earth oxide materials, specifically dysprosium oxide (Dy 2 O 3 ), as potential electrocatalysts for NRR. Utilizing spin-polarized density functional theory calculations, we explored the interaction between Dy 2 O 3 surfaces and nitrogen (N 2 ) molecules, examining the capability of Dy 2 O 3 to adsorb and activate N 2 under ambient conditions. The results indicate that Dy 2 O 3 surfaces exhibit diverse configurations and bonding environments, providing a variety of reactive sites that display different behaviors in N 2 adsorption and activation. The distinctive electronic structure and surface chemistry of a particular Dy 2 O 3 surface configuration were found to significantly enhance the activation of N 2 by promoting charge transfer, which facilitates the NRR process. This research provides deep insights into the mechanistic pathways of N 2 reduction over Dy 2 O 3 , highlighting the surface properties as pivotal in catalysis. These theoretical insights serve as a foundation for the development of novel rare earth-based electrocatalytic materials for efficient ambient e-NRR, potentially transforming ammonia production into a greener and more energy-efficient process.

Seniority eigenstate configuration interaction

Zero-seniority methods have shown great promise for the description of strongly correlated electronic systems. Other seniority sectors have been much less explored, and in particular, the maximal seniority sector and zero seniority have the same underlying algebraic structure. We introduce a seniority eigenstate configuration interaction in which the wave function is constrained to have good fixed local seniority for each paired orbital, by which we mean we partition orbitals into a pairing set with seniority zero, and a spin set with seniority one. Here, we show how to build the effective Hamiltonian for this ansatz, and demonstrate that high-seniority wave functions have unexpectedly excellent accuracy for strongly correlated fermionic systems, with accuracy competitive with or better than seniority zero for the Hubbard model and for the dissociation of the nitrogen molecule.
