New Martian satellite search

The approach pictures taken by the Viking 1 and Viking 2 spacecrafts two days before their Mars orbital insertion maneuvers were analyzed in order to search for new satellites within the orbit of Phobos. To accomplish this task, search procedure and analysis strategy were formulated, developed and executed using the substantial image processing capabilities of the Image Processing Laboratory at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The development of these new search capabilities should prove to be valuable to NASA in processing of image data obtained from other spacecraft missions. The result of applying the search procedures to the Viking approach pictures was as follows: no new satellites of comparable size (approx. 20 km) and brightness to Phobos or Demios were detected within the orbit of Phobos.

Networks for image acquisition, processing and display

The human visual system comprises layers of networks which sample, process, and code images. Understanding these networks is a valuable means of understanding human vision and of designing autonomous vision systems based on network processing. Ames Research Center has an ongoing program to develop computational models of such networks. The models predict human performance in detection of targets and in discrimination of displayed information. In addition, the models are artificial vision systems sharing properties with biological vision that has been tuned by evolution for high performance. Properties include variable density sampling, noise immunity, multi-resolution coding, and fault-tolerance. The research stresses analysis of noise in visual networks, including sampling, photon, and processing unit noises. Specific accomplishments include: models of sampling array growth with variable density and irregularity comparable to that of the retinal cone mosaic; noise models of networks with signal-dependent and independent noise; models of network connection development for preserving spatial registration and interpolation; multi-resolution encoding models based on hexagonal arrays (HOP transform); and mathematical procedures for simplifying analysis of large networks.

Image management research

Two types of research issues are involved in image management systems with space station applications: image processing research and image perception research. The image processing issues are the traditional ones of digitizing, coding, compressing, storing, analyzing, and displaying, but with a new emphasis on the constraints imposed by the human perceiver. Two image coding algorithms have been developed that may increase the efficiency of image management systems (IMS). Image perception research involves a study of the theoretical and practical aspects of visual perception of electronically displayed images. Issues include how rapidly a user can search through a library of images, how to make this search more efficient, and how to present images in terms of resolution and split screens. Other issues include optimal interface to an IMS and how to code images in a way that is optimal for the human perceiver. A test-bed within which such issues can be addressed has been designed.

Optical Signal Processing: Poisson Image Restoration and Shearing Interferometry

Optical signal processing can be performed in either digital or analog systems. Digital computers and coherent optical systems are discussed as they are used in optical signal processing. Topics include: image restoration; phase-object visualization; image contrast reversal; optical computation; image multiplexing; and fabrication of spatial filters. Digital optical data processing deals with restoration of images degraded by signal-dependent noise. When the input data of an image restoration system are the numbers of photoelectrons received from various areas of a photosensitive surface, the data are Poisson distributed with mean values proportional to the illuminance of the incoherently radiating object and background light. Optical signal processing using coherent optical systems is also discussed. Following a brief review of the pertinent details of Ronchi's diffraction grating interferometer, moire effect, carrier-frequency photography, and achromatic holography, two new shearing interferometers based on them are presented. Both interferometers can produce variable shear.

Using Verified Lifting to Optimize Legacy Stencil Codes (Final Project Report)

This project investigated new techniques for compiling stencil and stencil-like computations. Stencils computations are commonly found in applications such as image processing, physical simulations, image processing, and machine learning. In recent years, many high-performance domain-specific languages (DSLs) have been proposed to optimize stencil computations. To leverage such DSLs, however, existing codes often need to be rewritten. Such rewriting is manual, labor intensive, and error-prone. To alleviate such issues, this project investigated the application of program synthesis and artificial learning techniques to enable stencil computations to automatically leverage new high-performance DSLs. Rather than constructing syntax driven rules, verified lifting uses program synthesis to search for a target code fragment to compile the given input code into. In addition, it also searches for a proof that validates how the found target code fragment preserves the semantics of the original input. Thus, the target code fragment is guaranteed to be semantically equivalent to the input.

Real time visual tracking of targets in six dimensions

Six dimensional target information is produced by a target tracking vision system for use in real time target tracking by a robotic system. The vision system described in this paper produces three axes of position data and three axes of orientation data using a single camera which views a three dimensional target. The system performs target detection, target discrimination and determines the target position and orientation relative to the camera. As the target information is determined, it is communicated to a computer which is controlling the robot motion in real time. Details of the image processing algorithms and image processing hardware used in the vision system are discussed in the paper.

Optode Images, and Dissolved Oxygen Data from Sand and Sediment Flow-through Column Experiments associated with: "2-D Imaging of Dissolved Oxygen Concentration in Flow-Through Sediment Columns"

This data package is associated with the publication "2-D Imaging of Dissolved Oxygen Concentration in Flow-Through Sediment Columns" submitted to Frontiers in Water (Garayburu-Caruso et al., 2022). This work presents a novel application of planar optode technology to sediment columns that allows the study of well-constrained flow fields without the need to assume completely homogeneous flow. We introduce a flow-through column with the interior coated in an oxygen sensing film and a series of sampling ports as a unique tool capable of capturing changes in dissolved oxygen (DO) at high frequency (10 s) and spatial (< 1 mm) resolution across the length of a column. In addition, we provide custom scripts that allows image processing steps to be automated and consistently reproduced over a variety of experimental conditions. This dataset is comprised of four folders (1) 01_Riverbed_Sediment_Experiment, (2) 02_Sand_Experiment, (3) 01_Riverbed_Sediment_Raw_Images, and (4) 02_Sand_Experiment_Raw_Images. 01_Riverbed_Sediment_Experiment contains (1) a subfolder with csv files that contain statistical parameters from the linear regressions applied to each optode image, (2) a subfolder with csv files from DO data measured by in-line sensors, (3) a subfolder with csv files containing column and injection specific input parameters for the image processing script, and (4) a subfolder with scripts used to process the images and create associated figures. 02_Sand_Experiment contains (1) a subfolder with csv files containing column and injection-specific input parameters for the image processing script, and (2) a subfolder with scripts used to process the images and create associated figures. 01_Riverbed_Sediment_Raw_Images (spited in 3 parts due to size) contains a subfolder with raw red, and green images from the optode system during the MilliQ Injection, Vanillin Injection or Vanillin + Sampling Injection respectively. 02_Sand_Experiment_Raw_Images contains a subfolder with raw red, and green images from the optode system. Outside of the main folders there is a csv containing file-level metadata and a csv data dictionary defining column headers for all csv files contained in the data package.
