Effect of Laser Fluence on Magnetic Properties of Thin Mn{sub x}Si{sub 1 –} {sub x} (x ≈ 0.5) Films Prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Abstract—The effect of laser pulse energy E on the possibility of forming of a homogeneous “high-temperature” ferromagnetic phase in Mn{sub x}Si{sub 1 –} {sub x} (x ≈ 0.5) alloy films grown by pulsed laser deposition onto an Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} (0001) substrate has been studied. The high-temperature phase with manganese concentration x ≈ 0.53 and the Curie temperature T{sub C} ~ 200–300 K is shown to form near the substrate at the initial stage of the film growth. In this case, high values E ≥ 6.8 J/cm{sup 2} favor the stabilization of this phase over all film thickness, while low values E = 2.6–5.7 J/cm{sup 2} lead to a decrease in the manganese concentration in the upper film layer and the formation of additional “low–temperature” phase with T{sub C} ≈ 30–50 K provided by silicides MnSi and Mn{sub 4}Si{sub 7} crystallites.

Effect of BiFeO3 nanoparticle on electrical, thermal and magnetic properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film

Highlights: • Conductivity increases with increasing of BFO in PVA nanocomposite. • The resistivity of the films increases with lowering temperature. • Characteristic relaxation time increases with BFO contents in composites. • The Current-voltage characteristics of the film samples show nonlinearity. • A transformation from antiferromagnetic to diamagnetic behaviour is observed. - Abstract: Synthesis of BiFeO{sub 3} (BFO) nanoparticles (NPs) is demonstrated by sol-gel method. The fabrication of the flexible nanocomposite films based on different wt. % of BFO NPs and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been done by solution casting method. Conductivity as well as thermal stability tends to increase with the increase in wt. % of BFO filler in PVA matrix. Current-voltage characteristics of the composite films show nonlinearity which invokes the concept of back to back Schottky diode. Due to generation of recombination current and high leakage current, large value of ideality factor arises in the BFO-PVA nanocomposite film. Activation energies from dc conductivity and dielectric response have been evaluated and a decreasing trend in activation energy is observed with the increase in wt. % of BFO nanoparticle insertion in the PVA matrix. At room temperature, BFO NPs exhibit antiferromagnetic behaviour whereas BFO-PVA composite films show diamagnetism.

The Effect of the Composition of a Carrier Gas during the Growth of a Mn delta-Layer on the Electrical and Magnetic Properties of GaAs Structures

The effect of the arsine content (from 0 to 8 μmol), supplied to a reactor together with hydrogen, on the formation of delta-doped gallium-arsenide structures by the pulsed laser sputtering of a Mn target is investigated. It is found that an arsine molar fraction of ~2.5 μmol in the reactor atmosphere during the formation of a Mn delta-doped GaAs layer allows one to obtain single-crystal epitaxial structures with the lowest layer resistance and a ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition temperature of about 40 K. Increasing the arsine content to 8 μmol or the absence of arsine in a hydrogen flow leads to a significant increase in the layer resistance in the temperature range below 150 K and a decrease in the Curie temperature. In the first case, this may be due to partial compensation of the hole conductivity by donor-type defects formed as a result of an excess of arsenic on the growing surface (arsenic atoms in Ga positions or in interstitial positions). In the second case, when no arsine is supplied to the reactor, the growth surface is likely to be enriched with gallium atoms, which makes the incorporation of Mn into the Ga sublattice difficult.

Structural, Optical, and Magnetic Properties of Nd-Doped CeO{sub 2} Nanoparticles Codoped with Transition Metal Elements (Cu, Zn, Cr)

In the present work, pure CeO{sub 2}, neodymium-doped CeO{sub 2}, and neodymium and transition metal element (Cu, Zn, Cr)-codoped CeO{sub 2} nanoparticles were synthesized by an auto-combustion method and annealed at 700 {sup ∘}C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that all the samples exhibited a single-phase cubic fluorite structure with the incorporation of respective dopant ions into the CeO{sub 2} lattice. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images displayed the prepared nanoparticles which had an irregular flaky structure with large agglomerations. The Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy analysis revealed the increased oxygen vacancy defects in CeO{sub 2} host after doping and codoping with neodymium and transition metal elements. Ultraviolet-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) studies revealed the decrease in bandgap values in doped and codoped samples compared to pure CeO{sub 2} sample. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies revealed the presence of functional groups in the prepared samples. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analysis reported the decreased luminescence intensities of Nd-doped and neodymium and transition metal-codoped CeO{sub 2} nanoparticles. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) results depicted that all the samples exhibited room-temperature ferromagnetism.

The Spectral and Magnetic Properties of Er{sup 3+} and Yb{sup 3+} Ions in Y{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} Crystals with a Pyrochlore Structure

Cubic Y{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7} single crystals doped with Er{sup 3+} or Yb{sup 3+} ions have been studied by the methods of electron spin resonance (ESR) and selective laser spectroscopy. ESR spectra exhibit signals from rare-earth ions that substitute for yttrium ions in sites with local trigonal symmetry. The g tensor components are determined. The results of optical investigations indicate that impurity centers of several types are formed; the sublevel energies of the ground and excited multiplets of these centers are found. Among the great variety of detected optical centers, the centers that dominate in the formation of ESR spectra are discriminated. An analysis of the experimental data using the exchange-charge model have made it possible to determine the sets of parameters of the crystal field for Er{sup 3+} and Yb{sup 3+} ions substituting Y{sup 3+} ions in regular crystallographic sites in pyrochlore Y{sub 2}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}.

Light-Induced Decoupling of Electronic and Magnetic Properties in Manganites

The strongly correlated material La 0.7 ⁢Sr 0.3 ⁢Mn⁢O 3 (LSMO) exhibits metal-to-insulator and magnetic transition near room temperature. Although the physical properties of LSMO can be manipulated by strain, chemical doping, temperature, or magnetic field, they often require large external stimuli. Further, to include additional flexibility and tunability, we developed a hybrid optoelectronic heterostructure that uses photocarrier injection from cadmium sulfide (Cd⁢ S) to an LSMO layer to change its electrical conductivity. LSMO exhibits no significant optical response; however, the Cd ⁢S/LSMO heterostructures show an enhanced conductivity, with a resistance drop of about 37%, at the transition temperature under light stimuli. This enhanced conductivity in response to light is comparable to the effect of a 9 T magnetic field in pure LSMO. Surprisingly, the optical and magnetic responses of Cd⁢ S/LSMO heterostructures are decoupled and exhibit different effects when both stimuli are applied. This unexpected behavior shows that heterostructuring strongly correlated oxides may require a new understanding of the coupling of physical properties across the transitions and provide the means to implement new functionalities.

Pressure-tuning of the electronic and magnetic properties of EuPt 2 Si 2

Using the element and orbital selectivity of x-ray absorption spectroscopy at Eu and Pt L 3 edges we investigate the effects of the lattice contraction, induced by temperature and external pressure, on the magnetic and electronic properties of the EuPt 2 Si 2 system. Our findings point to a clear relationship between the volume and the Eu valence in this material. From XANES experiments as a function of pressure we show that the Europium valence tends to stabilize at 3+ for pressures up to 27 GPa. The XMCD results demonstrate that pressure induced valence change of the Europium ion leads to a suppression of the magnetic ordering of the material. Finally, altogether our results provide direct evidence that Eu-4f /5d electronic hybridization effects underlie the mechanism that regulates the valence and magnetic ordering in this material.

Electrical and Magnetic Properties of FeGa 3 with Antisite Disorder

We investigated the electronic and magnetic ground states of the cage compound FeGa 3 under the presence of Fe antisite disorder (namely as Fe 0.258 Ga 0.742 ) by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), magnetization and electrical resistivity. Our results show that approximately 4.5 (5)% Fe antisite occupying one of the two non-equivalent Ga sites changes significantly the electronic and magnetic ground states of the pristine compound. We uncover that Fe 0.258 Ga 0.742 undergoes two magnetic transitions, T 1 ≈ 60 K and T 2 ≈ 15 K, the latter associated with the suppression of semiconducting behavior. We focus our discussion on the role that in-gap impurity states and spin disorder play across semiconducting-metal and paramagnetic-magnetic transitions.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland family R 2 Be 2 SiO 7 ( R = Nd , Sm , Gd-Yb )

Compounds forming the quasi-two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) have attracted significant experimental and theoretical attention in the field of frustrated magnetism. This is primarily due to their realization of an exactly soluble J 1 –J 2 orthogonal dimer model capable of hosting magnetic order, dimer singlet, and plaquette singlet phases in zero applied field and their complex magnetic phase diagrams with fractional magnetization plateaus and possible superfluid and supersolid phases found between the plateau states. The discovery and characterization of SSL compounds based on rare-earth magnetic ions provide a direct route to study the stability and properties of these exotic magnetic phases in systems with a variety of different magnetic anisotropies. In this paper, we discuss the synthesis and magnetic characterization of polycrystalline samples of the R 2 ⁢Be 2 ⁢SiO 7 family, where R=Nd, Sm, and Gd-Yb. All family members crystallize in the space group $P\bar{⁢4}⁢2_1⁢m$ (113) and show no signs of long-range magnetic order above 2 K, except for R=Tb which orders antiferromagnetically at 2.6 K.

Interplay of Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Eu 5.08-x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 Solid Solution

Zintl phases containing rare-earth metals have gained attention due to their magnetic, electronic, and thermoelectric properties. Eu 5.08 Al 3 Sb 6 is a new structure type (monoclinic space group C2/m) that can be described as a pseudorock-salt EuSb motif with the Eu-centered Sb octahedra at the origin of the unit cell, and on the C-face center, containing either Eu (8%) or an Al 4 tetrahedron modeled as a dual tetrahedron (37.5%). The complete solid solution of Eu 5.08–x Sr x Al 3 Sb 6 can be prepared; however, the cation totals vacillate from 5 to 5.24 depending on the Al content. Al K-edge XANES shows a shift to higher energy relative to the Al metal but at slightly lower energy relative to AlSb, indicating an intermediate oxidation state closer to +3 than 0. The lack of an Al K-edge shift with the incorporation of Sr suggests that changes in Sr content do not have a meaningful impact on the electronics of the Al tetrahedra. Investigation of the solid solution structures provides evidence for classifying this structure type as a polar intermetallic phase with variable composition. Magnetization measurements were collected for the solid solution and show complex magnetic ordering with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions as the Sr content increases.

Evolution of electronic and magnetic properties in the topological semimetal SmSb x Te 2– x

The ZrSiS-type materials have attracted intensive attention due to the existence of various topological fermions. The magnetic version of the ZrSiS-type materials, L n SbTe(L n = lanthanides), is an ideal candidate to explore novel exotic states due to the interaction between magnetism and topology. In this work, we report the experimental study on structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and electronic properties for SmSb x Te 2– x with various Sb content. Further, the revealed evolutions of these properties with tuning the compositions would provide useful insights for the fundamental topological physics and the future applications.

Effects of carbon substitution on magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects in Mn 65-x Ga 17 C 18+x compounds

This study involved the tuning of the magnetic, magnetocaloric, and room-temperature structural properties of Mn 65-x Ga 17 C 18+x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) compounds prepared using a high-energy ball milling (HEBM) technique. This study indicates that the crystal structure of all the compounds can be described as an anti-perovskite cubic structure with the Pm-3m space group and the crystal cell volume decreases with increasing carbon concentration. The system shows a first-order structural phase transition at a temperature T=T M between two cubic phases having different magnetic structures. The phases are characterized by antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) -like behavior at low (T < T M ) and high (T M > T) temperature regions, respectively. A suppression of the AFM phase was observed with increasing C concentration. The temperature-induced first-order transitions (FOTs) were found to possess a small thermal hysteresis in the magnetization (~2-3 K) in an applied magnetic field of H = 50 kOe. Magnetic entropy changes estimated from isothermal magnetization curves indicate that the largest value of the magnetic entropy change of |ΔS M | = 2.1 J kg -1 K -1 for x = 4 with ΔH = 50 kOe, with a relative cooling power (RCP) of ~190 J kg -1 . Furthermore, high-energy ball milling (HEBM), a scalable technique, has been demonstrated as a viable method to synthesize magnetocaloric materials with substantial RCP values.

Reinvestigation of the intrinsic magnetic properties of (Fe 1–$x$ Co $x$ ) 2 B alloys and crystallization behavior of ribbons

In this paper, new determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of ( Fe 1 - x Co x ) 2 B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with x = 0.3 - 0.35 are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, and Ti additions. Previous attempts at developing a significant hysteresis have been unsuccessful in this system. Our melt-spinning experiment indicates that this system shows rapid crystallization.

Alloying effect of rare-earth tritellurides on the charge density wave and magnetic properties

Among many van der Waals materials rare-earth tritellurides (RTe3) allow studying several phenomena like magnetic, superconducting, and charge density wave (CDW). These studies show the effect of cationic alloying of antiferromagnetic RTe3 for fully tunable near room-temperature CDW properties. DyxGd1−xTe3 and DyxTb1−xTe3 alloys were synthesized through a chemical vapor transport technique, and the rare-earth element composition was controlled by changing the ratio of rare-earth metal reagents. The results show that the lattice parameters can be continuously tuned with the composition of the rare-earth cations leading to the variation of the internal chemical pressure. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy and electric transport measurement show that the CDW transition temperature (TCDW) of RTe3 alloys varies with lattice parameters/chemical pressure spanning across 300–380 K. Additional magnetism studies offer the first insights into the magnetic ordering in RTe3 alloys. The emergence of multiple magnetic transitions implies complex magnetic interactions that arise from interactions between different rare-earth elements. Overall findings introduce ways to control the CDW behavior and provide valuable insights into the magnetic ordering in RTe3 alloys, contributing to further investigation and a better understanding of their properties.

Exsolution Synthesis of Nanocomposite Perovskites with Tunable Electrical and Magnetic Properties

Nanostructured functional oxides play an important role in enabling clean energy technologies and novel memory and processor devices. Using thin-film La 0.6 Sr 0.4 FeO 3 (LSF) as a model system, the novel utility of exsolution in fabricating self-assembled metal oxide nanocomposites with tunable functionalities is shown. Exsolution triggers the formation of metallic iron (Fe 0 ) nanoparticles, Ruddlesden–Popper domains, and nm-scale percolated Fe-deficient channels in LSF. Combining multimodal characterization with numerical modeling, the chemical, magnetic, and electrical properties of the exsolution-synthesized nanocomposite at different stages of Fe 0 exsolution as well as during redox cycling are assessed. After exsolution, the electronic conductivity of the nanocomposite LSF increased by more than two orders of magnitude. Based on numerical analysis representing all the constituents, it is expected that this increase in conductivity originates mainly from the Fe-deficient percolating channels formed during exsolution. Moreover, the exsolved nanocomposite is redox-active even at moderate temperatures. Such redox capabilities can enable dynamic control of the nanocomposite functionality by tailoring the oxygen non-stoichiometry. This concept is demonstrated with a continuous modulation of magnetization between 0 and 110 emu cm -3 . These findings point out that exsolution may serve as a platform for scalable fabrication of complex metal oxide nanocomposites for electrochemical and electronic applications.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19

Here, in this study, a novel magnetic semimetal compound, Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , was synthesized successfully via high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 was determined using both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques, revealing a non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group, Pmn2 1 (No. 31). The Sb atoms in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 form five-atom-wide Sb 5 7− ribbons, narrower three-atom-wide Sb 3 5− ribbons, and single Sb 3− anions. On the other hand, both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions form the distorted Gd 3 and Mn 3 triangular lattices, respectively. The magnetic measurements suggest the complex magnetic interactions contributed by both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions. A sharp peak observed in the magnetic susceptibility plot at approximately 25 K corresponds to the antiferromagnetic-type transition in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 . Furthermore, the magnetic measurements along different directions indicate the strong magnetic anisotropy present in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , which is likely due to the complex magnetic interactions arising from the existence of Gd and Mn ions. Finally, the electrical resistivity measurements of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 indicate semimetallic behavior with a positive magnetoresistance.

Magnetic properties and signatures of moment ordering in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO 2

The magnetic ground state and the crystalline electric field level scheme of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeO 2 are investigated here. Below $T_N$ = 300 mK, KCeO 2 develops signatures of magnetic order in specific heat measurements and low energy inelastic neutron scattering data. Trivalent Ce 3+ ions in the $D_{3d}$ local environment of this compound exhibit large splittings among the lowest three 4$f^1$ Kramers doublets defining for the free ion the $\textit{J}$ = 5/2 sextet and a ground state doublet with dipole character, consistent with recent theoretical predictions by Eldeeb et al. [Phys. Rev. Materials 4, 124001 (2020)]. An unexplained, additional local mode appears, and potential origins of this anomalous mode are discussed.

Synthesis, Stability, and Magnetic Properties of Antiperovskite Co 3 PdN

Experimental synthesis and characterization of theoretically predicted compounds are important steps in the materials discovery pipeline. Here, we report on the synthesis of Co 3 PdN, which was recently predicted to be a stable magnetic antiperovskite. The Co 3 PdN thin films were grown by reactive sputtering and were confirmed to form in an antiperovskite crystal structure. The thermal stability of the compound is demonstrated up to 600 K by in situ X-ray diffraction, though the phase persists at slightly higher temperatures (700 K) in an air-free magnetometer. Both ab initio calculations and magnetization measurements find Co 3 PdN to be ferromagnetic with an experimentally determined Curie temperature of T C = 560 ± 5 K. The saturation magnetization of 1.2 μ B /Co found in the experiment is slightly lower than the 1.7 μ B /Co value expected by theory. A narrow magnetic hysteresis loop with a coercive field of 100 Oe at low temperature suggests that Co 3 PdN might be useful in electronic applications requiring fast switching of the magnetization vector. While prior prediction of Co 3 PdN showed a gapped electronic band structure for each spin channel, we show that this was due to incomplete sampling of Brillouin zone paths and that band crossings exist along R-X|M and X|M-R paths. The metallic nature of Co 3 PdN is further confirmed by temperature-dependent transport measurements, which also show a considerable anomalous Hall effect. Altogether, this work represents an appreciable step toward understanding the synthesis, structure, stability, and properties of a new magnetic material.
