Optimal electric-drive system for vehicles

Pulse-width-modulated controller, for vehicle electrically driven by direct current from storage battery and requiring highest possible efficiency in battery use, varies electrical power through silicon controlled rectifiers for permanent magnet dc motors. System is not restricted to dc motors.

An improved telemetry system

Transmission of parity bits together with data bits by a rate one half convolutional code of 25-bit constraint length, with sequential decoding of received signal increases quantity and accuracy of data transmitted by pulse code modulated system operating at given power level.

Multifunction audio digitizer for communications systems

Digitizer accomplishes both N bit pulse code modulation /PCM/ and delta modulation, and provides modulation indicating variable signal gain and variable sidetone. Other features include - low package count, variable clock rate to optimize bandwidth, and easily expanded PCM output.

Maximum power transfer from a solar-cell array by sensing array temperature

A technique is described in which a spacecraft solar-cell array is caused to operate at or near maximum power output over a wide range of environmental conditions. The output of an array temperature sensor is used to vary the duty cycle of a pulse-width-modulated impedance regulator so that the array operates at the voltage of maximum power. A resistance-type temperature sensor was found to be applicable for most spacecraft missions. However, a solar cell used as a temperature sensor has the advantage of negligible transient errors on lightweight arrays for orbiting spacecraft.

Nimbus 4/IRLS Balloon Interrogation Package (BIP)

The balloon interrogation package (BIP), an integral part of the overall interrogation, recording, and location subsystems (IRLS) for the Nimbus 4 program, is described. The BIP is a self-contained, integrated transponder designed to be carried aloft by a constant altitude, superpressure balloon to an altitude of 67,000 or 78,000 feet. After launch the BIP senses high-altitude balloon overpressure and temperature, and upon receipt of an interrogated command from the IRLS aboard the Nimbus 4 satellite, the BIP enodes the data on a real-time basis into a pulse-code modulation (PCM) format and transmits this data to the satellite. A summary of the program activity to produce 30 BIP systems and to support balloon launches from Ascension Island is presented.
