Fabrication of flexible perovskite solar cells via rapid thermal annealing

Adaptability, lightweight, and low cost of materials make flexible perovskite solar cells essential for the perovskite technology to breach commercial photovoltaic markets. Roll-to-roll manufacturing has great potential for high-throughput perovskite manufacturing; however, conventional annealing methods are not capable of producing flexible perovskite solar cells at scale. Conventional methods are time consuming and may compromise functionality of flexible substrates under tension. Here, we introduce a bladecoated perovskite thin film on flexible ITO-coated PET annealed via rapid thermal annealing (RTA) that reduces post-deposition processing time from ~150 s to ~14 s. As a result, performance was not sacrificed for scalability as a perovskite solar cell was produced with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.58%.

High-Efficiency Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells: Materials, Devices and Applications

Photovoltaic (PV) technology offers an economic and sustainable solution to the challenge of increasing energy demand in times of global warming. The world PV market is currently dominated by the homo-junction crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV technology based on high temperature diffused p-n junctions, featuring a low power conversion efficiency (PCE). Recent years have seen the successful development of Si heterojunction technologies, boosting the PCE of c-Si solar cells over 26%. This article reviews the development status of high-efficiency c-Si heterojunction solar cells, from the materials to devices, mainly including hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) based silicon heterojunction technology, polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) based carrier selective passivating contact technology, metal compounds and organic materials based dopant-free passivating contact technology. The application of silicon heterojunction solar cells for ultra-high efficiency perovskite/c-Si and III-V/c-Si tandem devices is also reviewed. In the last, the perspective, challenge and potential solutions of silicon heterojunction solar cells, as well as the tandem solar cells are discussed.

Strain-relaxed tetragonal MAPbI 3 results in efficient mesoporous solar cells

In mesoporous organo-halide perovskite solar cells, the coexistence of tetragonal phase and cubic phase in the perovskite layer is found to result in strained crystal structure at the mesoporous TiO 2 (mp-TiO 2 )/perovskite heterointerface. This results in structural defects pinholes, grain boundaries, and interfacial porosity which is detrimental towards photovoltaic performance and device stability. The strain at the interface originates from the lattice mismatch between the mp-TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and perovskite. Here, a transformative approach is demonstrated to realize relaxed and high purity tetragonal phase MAPbI 3 (RP) near the mp-TiO 2 interface region. This approach involves inserting a ~2 nm lattice matched buffer layer of cubic CsPbBr 3 between mp-TiO 2 NPs and MAPbI 3 , which serves as a template for epitaxial growth for top MAPbI 3 . As a result, the solar cell with relaxed MAPbI3 shows a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.12% with significantly enhanced environmental, light, and thermal stability.

Boosting photovoltaic performance of ternary organic solar cells by integrating a multi-functional guest acceptor

Constructing ternary structure is one of the most effective design strategies to break the efficiency ceiling of traditional binary organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a new Y-series non-fullerene acceptor (Y-T) featuring 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (DTBA) end groups is developed as a third component for the classical PM6:Y6 binary system. The champion power conversion efficiency of ternary OSCs is increased from 15.64% to 17.37% via incorporating 10 wt% Y-T, with the simultaneously enhanced open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.865 V, a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 26.90 mA/cm 2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 74.97%. The positive contribution of Y-T in the ternary blend can be ascribed to the improved spectroscopic complementarity and enhanced exciton utilization ratio due to the additional energy transfer process. Moreover, Y-T guest acceptor plays a critical role in adjusting the active layer morphology and facilitating three-dimension phase separation, resulting in a balanced charge transport and enhanced FF of ternary OSCs. Overall, this work provides insight into the molecular design of non-fullerene acceptor and suggest guidelines to rationally select guest component for ternary OSCs.

Polythiophene-based terpolymers with modulated aggregation behaviors for high-performance organic solar cells with 16.6% efficiency

Polythiophenes (PTs) are an attractive class of polymer donors (PDs) for organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their relatively simple structures and scalable synthesis. Herein, a series of chlorinated thiazole-incorporated PT terpolymers are designed and high-performance OSCs with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.6% are demonstrated. By incorporating two different units, 3,3'-difluoro-2,2'-bithiophene (T2F2) and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT), the aggregation properties of the terpolymers (PTz-FX; X = 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100, where X represents the mole percentage of T2F2 to total T2F2 +TT) are modulated. Among the PTz-FX series, PTz-F70 is found to be the optimal P D because its suitably tuned aggregation property leads to an optimized blend morphology with well-developed crystalline structures and donor–acceptor intermixed domains. The balanced morphology not only promotes charge generation/transport but also suppresses charge recombination in OSC devices. Thus, the PTz-F70-based OSCs achieve the highest PCE (16.6%), outperforming the OSCs based on PTz-FX with extremely strong (PTz-F100, PCE = 14.7%) or weak (PTz-F0, PCE = 12.0%) aggregation properties. The PCE of the PTz-F70-based OSCs is one of the highest performances among PT-based binary OSCs. Finally, this study highlights the importance of controlling the aggregation property of PTs for achieving high-performance PT-based OSCs.

Cold air quench control of local crystallization environment in fully air-processed carbon-based perovskite solar cells

Carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) present a low-cost route to efficient photovoltaic technology. Gas quenching is an essential process commonly used for solvent extraction in scalable module fabrication using solution processes, but film quality remains highly sensitive to the localized environmental processing temperature, especially during intermediate phase transitions before perovskite film high temperature annealing. In this study, we introduce a cold air quench strategy to precisely control the local crystallization temperature that simultaneously promotes uniform crystallization and facilitates strain relaxation in fully air-processed C-PSCs. It is found that implementing dry air at 10 °C as the quenching gas yields a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.52 %, with preferential (110) orientation and reduced, homogenized in-plane strain. This newly developed technique of a cost-effective low temperature air quenching process also enhances carrier lifetime, reduces interface recombination, and improves charge extraction. Furthermore, this work presents cold air quenching as a scalable, economic method to control perovskite crystallization and strain in C-PSC fabrication, advancing the industrial viability of high-performance perovskite modules.

Phonon lifetimes and mode softening in cubic Cs 2 AgBiBr 6

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as noteworthy candidates for photovoltaic applications in recent years. Their high power-conversion efficiency is largely attributed to the structure-function relationship, which is not well understood. In this study, we examine the low-frequency phonons of the double perovskite Cs 2 AgBiBr 6 using neutron inelastic scattering. We find that the acoustic phonon lifetimes decrease from 16 to 3 ps along Γ to X, which is indicative of significant anharmonicity that contributes to the ultralow thermal conductivity. Additionally, we observe a linear temperature dependence of the square of the zone-center soft optical phonon energy, which is consistent with a weakly first-order displacive cubic-tetragonal structural phase transition. These results provide a deeper understanding of the lattice dynamics and phase transitions in MHPs as well as the effects of anharmonicity by comparison with prototypical hybrid organic-inorganic MHPs, (CH 3 NH 3 ) PbX 3 (X = Br, I).

Topology optimization of an airfoil fin microchannel heat exchanger using artificial intelligence

High-performance microchannel heat exchangers are needed to supply heat for power conversion for nuclear microreactors. An airfoil fin microchannel design, constructed of Alloy 617 with helium as the working fluid, is analyzed and optimized using a design of experiments with artificial intelligence techniques. The use of airfoil fins offers the potential to reduce pressure drop across the heat exchanger, as compared to other types of channel configurations. A framework for topology optimization of airfoil fin printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) has been developed that can be readily extended to different fin sizes and shapes, as well as different inlet and operating conditions, materials of construction, and working fluids. An optimization procedure is developed that employs computational fluid dynamics for a set of design points identified using Latin hypercube sampling. Computational fluid dynamics is used to analyze a simplified two-channel configuration where five design parameters are varied – inlet angle, fin scale, extent of staggering, transverse and longitudinal pitches. Two methods (a 5D polynomial and a regression neural network) are compared for generating surrogate models and the resulting response surface approximation is input to a genetic algorithm that is used to identify a set of optimal parameters. The optimal geometries are found across six channel Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 to 5000, since inlet conditions affect flow through the heat exchanger. Additionally, a set of optimal designs that maximizes heat transfer and minimizes pressure drop is identified, and a thermal stress analysis is performed on the optimal design. Correlations for the Nusselt number and Darcy friction factor are developed that can be useful for thermal hydraulic analyses using system codes. Thermal stresses are analyzed and a brief discussion of the status of code cases of PCHEs for nuclear applications is given. Testing and thermomechanical modeling is needed to facilitate future code compliance of PCHEs for high pressure and high temperature applications.

A 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone for high-efficiency organic solar cells

One-dimensional ladder-type nonfullerene electron acceptors (NFAs) with large fused ring cores have been typically used in highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Prior studies have demonstrated that small molecule acceptors with three-dimensional (3D) structures may exhibit low energy loss, and hence can lead to improved OSC performance. In this study, a new 3D NFA ( 99CZ-8F ) with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone was designed, synthesized, and characterized, where two linear A-D-A architectures were linked by a single N–N bond. 99CZ-8F showed strong absorption in the range of 500–800 nm in the solid state, which is complementary to the absorption of the donor material PM6 . After regulating the morphology of the active layer via binary solvent mixture, the optimized device exhibited a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.6 ± 0.1%, which is among the best reported values for 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor based OSCs

Regulating crystallization to maintain balanced carrier mobility via ternary strategy in blade-coated flexible organic solar cells

Regulating the crystallization of donor and acceptor to maintain balanced carrier mobility is of great importance to fabricate efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, the balanced crystallinity between donor and acceptor was finely controlled in blade-coated OSCs. By adding high crystalline FOIC into PBDB-T:ITIC system, a balanced carrier mobility was achieved, resulting in the much improved fill factor. The optimized ternary device exhibits an increased current density, due to the enhanced light-harvesting efficiency with complementary absorption and the morphology change. Morphology characterization demonstrated that the ternary film exhibits a highly balanced crystallinity between the donor and acceptor on account of the formation of acceptor alloy. Moreover, the ternary film not only possesses a small domain size, but also exhibits a high domain purity as compared to both binary films. Encouragingly, a highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.68% was obtained for the blade-coated ternary OSCs. In addition, the blade-coated flexible large-area (105 mm 2 ) OSC based on PBDB-T:ITIC:FOIC ternary system also exhibits a high PCE of 9.81%, showing great potential in the high-throughput fabrication of OSCs.

Scalable semitransparent prototype organic photovoltaic module with minimal resistance loss

Semi-transparent organic photovoltaic (ST-OPV) cells are regarded as an attractive solution to building-integrated solar energy harvesting. Both the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and average photopic transmission (APT) of ST-OPVs have shown substantial increases in recent years. However, less attention has been paid to the area scaling of ST-OPV cells. In this work, we investigate the scalability of ST-OPV cells from 4 mm 2 to 1 cm 2 , as well as 9 cm 2 active area prototype module. By integrating both top and bottom metal grids onto the transparent electrodes, the series resistance loss of 1 cm 2 ST-OPV cell is significantly reduced, and is comparable to that of the grid-free 4 mm 2 cell. Nine 1 cm 2 cells are then connected in a series-parallel circuit to realize a prototype ST-OPV module. A 100% fabrication yield with only 5% PCE deviation among discrete cells is achieved. The semitransparent module shows PCE = 7.2 ± 0.1% under simulated AM 1.5G illumination at 1 sun intensity, which exhibits no connection resistance loss compared to that of the individual cells. The ST-OPV module exhibits an APT = 38.1 ± 1.1%, which enables a light utilization efficiency, LUE = 2.74 ± 0.09%. Here, the method demonstrates a promising way for ST-OPV modules to scale without compromising performance.

Fluorinated polythiophenes with ester side chains for boosting the V OC and efficiency in non-fullerene polymer solar cells

As the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) approximates the 19 % threshold, wide bandgap (WBG) polythiophenes (PTs) have gained increasing attention due to their simple chemical structures and ease of synthesis, making them promising candidates for large-scale production. However, the benchmark polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is limited by its high-lying HOMO energy level, which restricts the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) in solar cells. Here, in this study, we introduce a novel series of PT derivatives (PDC8-T, PDC8-3T, PDC16-3T, and PDC16-3T-2F) featuring ester side chains designed to fine-tune electronic properties through a streamlined three-step synthesis. Additionally, we incorporated a π-spacer to reduce steric hindrance and elongated alkyl side chains to improve solubility and processability. Compared to P3HT, these PT derivatives demonstrate a significant reduction in HOMO energy levels, lowering by approximately 0.3–0.4 eV. Among them, PDC16-3T-2F—with fluorine atom substitution—achieves the lowest HOMO energy level, induces a coplanar molecular conformation, and enhances polymer aggregation behavior. We evaluated these PT derivatives in inverted non-fullerene bulk-heterojunction (NFA BHJ) OPVs. The PDC8-3T device showed a relatively low PCE of 0.69 %, with a V OC of 0.76 V, a short-circuit current density (J SC ) of 3.32 mA/cm 2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 27.3 %. In contrast, the PDC16-3T-2F device achieved an impressive PCE of 7.21 %, with a V OC of 0.85 V, a J SC of 14.60 mA/cm 2 , and an FF of 58.4 %. This remarkable improvement is attributed to the fluorine substitution, which not only enhances molecular orientation but also downshifts the HOMO energy level and further boosts the V OC . Hence, these molecular design strategies have led to a fibrillar bicontinuous interpenetrating network with optimal nanoscale phase separation within the active layer.

A review of Sb 2 Se 3 photovoltaic absorber materials and thin-film solar cells

Energy generated from environmentally friendly, cost-effective solar cells is a key aspect for developing a clean renewable-energy economy. Non-toxic and Earth-abundant materials with high absorption coefficient (>10 5 cm -1 ) and optimal bandgap (1-1.5 eV) have received great attention as photovoltaic (PV) absorber layers during the last few decades. Among them, antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) has been a promising PV absorber, with steadily increasing power-conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to other emerging compounds. Very recent studies showed that high-quality ZnO:Al/ZnO/CdS/TiO 2 /Sb 2 Se 3 /MoSe 2 /Mo devices with PCE of 9.2% can be fabricated using cost-effective novel compounds. Considering these recent advances, this article provides an overview of the material properties of Sb2Se3 thin films and the recent progress made with Sb 2 Se 3 -based solar cells. Furthermore, analysis of Sb 2 Se 3 -based thin-film solar cells has also shown that the devices have relatively good light management due to their suitable bandgap and high absorption coefficient, whereas carrier management, i.e. collection efficiency of photo-generated carriers, needs significant improvement. Overall, this study provides background knowledge on material properties and device performance and suggests main research directions to overcome the limiting factors of solar cell performance.

Effects of potassium treatment on SnO 2 electron transport layers for improvements of perovskite solar cells

SnO 2 has been studied intensively as an electron transport layer (ETL) for highly efficient metal halide perovskite solar cells. However, SnO 2 ETL frequently exhibits defect-related issues associated with the bulk SnO 2 and the perovskite/SnO 2 interface, and to passivate the defect states potassium ion has been used. In order to investigate the passivation effect of potassium ion, we carried out KCl treatment on the solution-processed SnO 2 ETL. It was found that KCl-treatment shifted up conduction band maximum and Fermi energy of SnO 2 , and reduced the band gap of perovskite absorber by K + diffusion, which resulted in a better conduction band alignment at perovskite/SnO 2 . Admittance spectroscopy revealed that diffused K + ions can passivate defects of the perovskite absorber layer. With the improvement of band alignment and defect passivation via the KCl treatment, the J-V hysteresis was almost eliminated and power conversion efficiency was much enhanced with improved open-circuit voltage and fill factor.

Using hole injection layers for decreased metastability and higher performance in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 devices

In this work, modifications to the buffer structure in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) solar cells are examined in terms of power conversion efficiency and metastability. Varying amounts of thin hole-injecting layers are introduced at different locations in the CIGS/Zn(O,S) device structure. It is found that such layers simultaneously increase performance and decrease metastability. The most effective variant produces devices without metastability and with higher efficiency than the CdS-only controls. The most effective location for hole injection is found to be between the Zn(O,S) buffer and the transparent conductor. At this location, passivation of the CIGS surface is not a function of the hole injection layer, and thus a variety of materials with appropriate band-edge energies should achieve the same purpose.

Optimized NiTe 2 /Ni back contacts via chemical deposition for high performance CdTe solar cells

The development of efficient and stable back contacts remains a major challenge in achieving high performance and long-term stability of CdTe thin-film solar cells. Here, this work revisits the formation of NiTe 2 by chemical bath deposition (CBD) as a back contact for CdTe devices. An optimized CBD recipe, based on high-purity precursors and the addition of copper chloride directly into the bath, was developed and applied to fabricate Cu-doped CdTe solar cells. A modified Cu-free methodology was also applied to Group V doped absorbers. The process included pinhole filling, ion milling, CBD, annealing, and sputtering to form a low-barrier back contact. Devices fabricated using this method achieved consistent open-circuit voltages (V oc ) above 800 mV and fill factors (FF) exceeding 70%. The best Cu-doped devices reached power conversion efficiencies (PCE) above 18 %, and preliminary results with Group V-doped material demonstrated compatibility of the method with high-efficiency, state-of-the-art CdTe devices. This study shows that NiTe 2 /Ni back contacts, formed via an optimized chemical process followed by sputtering of Ni, represent a promising pathway for achieving low-barrier and potentially stable back contacts in modern CdTe photovoltaics.

Photoinduced Anion Segregation in Mixed Halide Perovskites

Alloyed lead halide perovskites have taken a dominant role in the quest for third-generation solar cells. This is due to optimal light-harvesting properties, which can be tuned across the visible spectrum by mixing halide (X = Cl – , Br – , and I – ) anions and A + cations (A + = FA + , MA + , and Cs + ). Durability issues related to ion movement within the perovskite lattice, however, impede large-scale commercialization. Uniformly mixed halide perovskites [e.g., APb(I 1– x Br x ) 3 ] reversibly segregate into narrow bandgap I-rich and wide bandgap Br-rich domains during continuous visible illumination. Subsequent I-rich domains reduce local open circuit voltages and decrease mixed halide perovskite solar cell power conversion efficiencies. In this review, we assess the known effects of halide segregation on the structural and optical properties of mixed halide materials, discuss ongoing research to suppress the phenomenon, and finally provide a mechanistic overview of its underlying origins.

Pseudo-halide anion engineering for efficient quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper tin perovskite solar cells

Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid tin perovskites have emerged as promising alternatives to lead-based perovskites in thin-film photovoltaics because of their reduced toxicity and improved stability. However, the undesired small n-value 2D phases and disordered crystal orientation enormously restrict the efficiency of quasi-2D tin perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to uncontrollable nucleation and crystal growth processes. Here, we propose a mixed pseudo-halide anion engineering approach by using acetate (Ac - ) and tetrafluoroborate (BF 4 - ) anions to make quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites with a target formula of PEA 2 FA 4 Sn 5 I 16 . We find that the mixed Ac - and BF 4 - anions can not only promote homogeneously distributed PEA + cations in the precursor by effectively breaking the PEA + ···PEA + stacking but also retard the crystallization process by coordinating with unbonded SnI 2 , thereby, significantly reducing small n-value 2D phases, improving the crystal orientation, and suppressing the Sn 2+ oxidation. The resulting PSC exhibits up to 9% power conversion efficiency and 400 h stability.
