Qualification of black electrically conductive paint

A paint having low electrical resistance has been developed. Using a low outgassing polyurethane resin, specific amounts of conductive carbon particles were added to produce paint compositions having a range of electrical resistance. Methods of testing for electrical resistance are discussed. The adhesion of these paints has been tested successfully over the temperature range from liquid nitrogen temperature up to 80 C (176 F).

Design, fabrication, test, qualification and price analysis for third generation design solar cell modules

An updated program plan is presented showing the task descriptions depicting the work, progress, achievements, and the cause of any deviations from the original plan (SC-1), and how this impacted on the original schedule of the program. In addition there is an update documenting all design alterations made during the pre-production phase and a complete up to date set of engineering and manufacturing documentation (CM-1). The purpose of the work in the original plan was to explore, design, develop, test, and deliver 1000 watts of prototype flat plate, photovoltaic modules appropriate for use in applications in the 20 to 500 kilowatt range and which show potential for meeting the 1986 cost goals.

Development, qualification, and delivery of a hydrogen burnoff igniter

The hydrogen burnoff igniter, a pyrotechnic device used to burn off excess hydrogen gas near the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) nozzle, was designed, fabricated, and qualified. Characteristics of the burnoff igniter include a function time of 8 + or - 2 seconds, a minimum three foot flame length at maximum output, and hot particles projected 15 feet when fired directly into or perpendicular to a 34.5 knot wind. The three foot flame length was considered to be of questionable importance, since the hot particles are the media for igniting the hydrogen. Flame temperature is greater than 1500 F.

Development of design, qualification, screening, and application requirements for plastic encapsulated solid-state devices for space applications

Test data were collected on 1035 plastic encapsulated devices and 75 hermetically scaled control group devices that were purchased from each of five different manufacturers in the categories of (1) low power Schottsky TTL (bipolar) digital circuits; (2) CMOS digital circuits; (3) operational amplifier linear circuits; and (4) NPN transistors. These parts were subjected to three different initial screening conditions, then to extended life testing, to determine any possible advantages or trends for any particular screen. Several tests were carried out in the areas of flammability testing, humidity testing, high pressure steam (auroclave) testing, and high temperature storage testing. Test results are presented. Procurement and application considerations for use of plastic encapsulated semiconductors are presented and a statistical analysis program written to study the log normal distributions resulting from life testing is concluded.

Structural qualification testing and operational loading on a fiberglass rotor blade for the Mod-OA wind turbine

Fatigue tests were performed on full- and half-scale root end sections, first to qualify the root retention design, and second to induce failure. Test methodology and results are presented. Two operational blades were proof tested to design limit load to ascertain buckling resistance. Measurements of natural frequency, damping ratio, and deflection under load made on the operational blades are documented. The tests showed that all structural design requirements were met or exceeded. Blade loads measured during 3000 hr of field operation were close to those expected. The measured loads validated the loads used in the fatigue tests and gave high confidence in the ability of the blades to achieve design life.

Component qualification and initial build of the AGT 100 advanced automotive gas turbine

In advance of initial dynamometer testing of the AGT 100 engine, all prime components and subsystems were bench/rig tested. Included were compressor, combustor, turbines, regenerator, ceramic components, and electronic control system. Results are briefly reviewed. Initial engine buildup was completed and rolled-out for test cell installation in July 1982. Shakedown testing included motoring and sequential firing of the combustor's three fuel nozzles.

Shock response spectra variational analysis for pyrotechnic qualification testing of flight hardware

Shock response spectra data from flight certification tests were analyzed to determine envelope variation with respect to mean values in each axis. An overall variation of + or - 8.61 dB or 169 percent exists for the data. This large variation may be attributed to one or more of the following: (1) Instrumentation problems may exist. (2) Variations in the source charge (blasting caps) such as shape or explosive load may exist. (3) Two blasting caps were used to excite the pyrotechnic plate tester. Delay time between charge firings may have varied. The cause or causes of the variations need to be identified and researched to prevent future pyroshock problems.

Hipot and continuity qualification est experience

High voltage potential (Hipot) and module frame continuity tests are important parts of determining the suitability of solar modules for deployment into large arrays for electrical power production. Since field arrays operate at hundreds of volts above (or below) ground potential at some point in the field, it is necessary to assure adequate voltage isolation of the solar cell circuits.

Separator Qualification for Aerospace Nickel-cadmium Cells

The development plans for a new separator for nickel cadmium (NiCd) cells is described. Research includes acceptance testing, operation in a charge/discharge characterization matrix, and life testing in low earth orbit (LEO) and geosynchronous (GEO) orbit under real time and accelerated conditions.

Hubble space telescope component qualification utilizing a residual gas analyzer

An approach is described for integrating an automated residual gas analyzer (RGA) into the thermal vacuum outgas process. The RGA has the capability of detailed analysis over a 200 amu range with monitoring of each peak as the test progresses. The NASA criterion of either a 50% reduction of each peak over 44 amu or less than an 0.1% amplitude of the 28 amu base peak for all amu's above 44 amu is satisfied. A computer sorts, reports which peaks do not satisfy the criterion, and reports test completion. The computer plots amplitudes of all the peaks from 1 amu through 200 amu for each scan. This RGA real time approach is unique in that it provides sufficient detail to highlight a problem as it occurs. By comparison, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) or a thermoelectric quartz crystal microbalance (TQCM) indicates to the operator when changes occur, but not what has happened. Optical witness samples indicate whether a test was satisfactory within a few days after the test was completed.

Qualification of the T2 wind tunnel in cryogenic operation. A: Thermal field, preliminary study of a schematic model

The T2 wind tunnel is described. The process of generating a cyrogenic gust using the example of a test made at very low temperature is presented. Detailed results of tests on temperatures for flow in the settling chamber, the interior walls of the system, and the metal casing are given. The transverse temperature distribution in the settling chamber and working section, and of the thermal gradients in the walls, are given as a function of the temperature level of the test.

Presentation of the acoustic and aerodynamic results of the Aladin 2 concept qualification testing

Wind tunnel tests were conducted of a scale model of the Aladin 2 aircraft. The propulsion system configuration is described and the air flow caused by jet ejection is analyzed. Three dimensional flow studies in the vicinity of the engine installation were made. Diagrams of the leading and trailing edge flaps are provided. Graphs are developed to show the aerodynamic performance under conditions of various airspeed and flap deflection.
