Removal of histological sections from glass for electron microscopy - Use of Quetol 651 resin and heat

A number of approaches have been used to separate stained conventional histological sections from glass slides in preparation for a study with the electron microscope. However, in each reported case some problems were encountered with respect to the separation process. The present investigation is concerned with the use of the epoxy resin Quetol 651 as an embedding medium for this procedure, taking into account the simple application of heat (62-64 C) for performing the separation step. After the tissue has been removed from the glass by the considered technique, it is thin sectioned, and stained with uranyl acetate-lead citrate.

Potential Surface Improvements by Bump Removal for 64-m Antenna

The surface panels of the main reflector of the 64-m antenna are initially set at an elevation angle of 45 deg, where most tracking occurs, to ideally match a prescribed praboloid. As the antenna is rotated about the elevation axis, distortions are introduced at the surface panel's supporting nodes as well as at the main reflector backup structure by changes in the direction of the gravity forces relative to the reflector symmetric axis. Major bump displacements could be corrected by controlling the position of the surface panel corners using adjustable mechanical jacks that change in length with the antenna elevation angle. The analysis of two bump-removal configurations is presented and one unique adjustment mechanism is proposed. A gain recovery of 0.2 dB at X-band would be available if the reflector structure distortion rms were reduced from 0.63 mm (0.025 in.) to 0.15 mm (0.006 in.).

Noise removal in multichannel images

A adaptive filtering method, the Windrow-Hoff algorithm, for enhancing multichannel signals against aditive noise was investigated. It removes noise for multichannel images containing correlated signal compoments but uncorrelated noise components. Its potential application is the enhancement of multichannel microwave satellite images as a preprocessing step for the extraction of geophysical parameters.

A 200-MeV pi(+) induced nucleon removal from 24Mg

Nuclear gamma rays in coincidence with outgoing pions and/or protons following single nucleon removal from Mg24 by 200 MeV pi(+) were detected with Ge(Li) detectors. Differential cross sections are reported for gamma rays from the first excited mirror states of Na23 to Mg23 in coincidence with positive pions and/or protons detected in particle telescopes at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 deg; angle integrated absolute cross sections and cross section ratios sigma (Mg23/sigma (Na23) are calculated. These results are compared with the predictions of the one step quasifree (OSQF), the intranuclear cascade (INC), and the nucleon charge exchange (NCX) reaction models. The OSQF and the INC calculations generally agree with the experimental results, while the NCX calculations are in disagreement.

SASS wind ambiguity removal by direct minimization. II - Use of smoothness and dynamical constraints

A variational analysis method (VAM) is used to remove the ambiguity of the Seasat-A Satellite Scatterometer (SASS) winds. The VAM yields the best fit to the data by minimizing an objective function S which is a measure of the lack of fit. The SASS data are described and the function S and the analysis procedure are defined. Analyses of a single ship report which are analogous to Green's functions are presented. The analysis procedure is tuned and its sensitivity is described using the QE II storm. The procedure is then applied to a case study of September 6, 1978, south of Japan.

Objective scatterometer wind ambiguity removal using smoothness and dynamical constraints

In the present investigation, a variational analysis method (VAM) is used to remove the ambiguity of the Seasat-A Satellite Scatterometer (SASS) winds. At each SASS data point, two, three, or four wind vectors (termed ambiguities) are retrieved. It is pointed out that the VAM is basically a least squares method for fitting data. The problem may be nonlinear. The best fit to the data and constraints is obtained on the basis of a minimization of the objective function. The VAM was tested and tuned at 12 h GMT Sept. 10, 1978. Attention is given to a case study involving an intense cyclone centered south of Japan at 138 deg E.

Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 MSS coherent noise - Characterization and removal

The Multispectral Scanner (MSS) remote sensing instrument carried by Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 is similar to MSS instruments carried by Landsat-1, Landsat-2, and Landsat-3. However, the addition of the Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument to Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 required several design changes in the MSS instruments carried on these satellites because of the lower orbit and new satellite platform. Data from the MSS onboard the Landsat-4 and Landsat-5 satellites were found to be generally comparable to the data obtained in the case of the earlier Landsat MSSs. However, a coherent noise pattern was observed in the Landsat-4 MSS data. In the present paper, the conduction of a noise analysis is discussed along with the noise characterization results, and a technique through which the Landsat-4 MSS coherent noise can be removed.

Geologic mapping using Landsat MSS and TM images - Removing vegetation by modeling spectral mixtures

Semi-arid regions of the island of Hawaii and of the Tucson Mountains, AZ, having less than 50 percent green vegetation cover were mapped into rock/soil types by first identifying spectral mixtures of vegetation and rock/soil, and then removing the vegetation information. Landsat MSS images were used for Hawaii, and a Landsat TM image was used for the Tucson Mountains. Following analysis of the images field transects were done in test areas to determine percent vegetation cover and vegetation community characteristics, and to observe rock and soil types. For both Hawaii and the Tucson Mountains 20 percent or more of green vegetation caused potential misidentification of the rock/soil units unless spectral mixing was taken into account.

Enhanced Raman spectroscopic study of the coordination chemistry of malononitrile on copper surfaces - Removal of nu(C=N) degeneracy through pi-coordination

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the molecular interactions of malononitrile with copper electrode surfaces. The doubly degenerate CN stretching frequency at 2263/cm is removed when malononitrile adsorbs on copper. Two nu(CN) bands are observed at 2096 and 2204/cm at -0.6 V(SCE). The result shows that only one CN group is pi-coordinated with Cu, which contributes to the observed large shift (-167/cm) in nu(CN). The other CN group is not coordinated to the metal surface.

These results are compared with the predictions of a Pauli-blocked plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) and the intranuclear cascade (INC) and nucleon charge exchange (NCX) reaction models. The PWIA and the INC calculations generally agree with the angular dependence of the experimental results but not the absolute magnitude. The NCX calculation does not reproduce the observed cross section charge ratios.

The removal of atmospheric effects from remotely sensed near-infrared spectral data

A technique has been developed for removing atmospheric effects from high-resolution remotely sensed 0.7-2.5-micron spectral data. This calibration technique relies solely on the raw spectra data for calibration information. Results are presented for a set of reflectance spectra for rock samples obtained at a distance of about 0.5 km using an InSb spectrophotometer. The calibration technique uses the depths of water-vapor absorption bands in the remotely obtained spectral data to estimate the degree to which atmospheric attenuation has affected these data.

Application of the cepstrum to remove echoes from rotor acoustic spectra

The application of the power cepstrum technique to the analysis of model scale helicopter rotor noise spectra is investigated. The power cepstrum technique emerges as a useful tool for the removal of undesired acoustic reflections from measured rotor spectra. It is most effective when the reflections are exact duplicates of the signal, i.e., when the echo transfer function is linear. Moreover, the technique is best applied to a measured spectrum which is due entirely to the signal and its echoes, when no nonsource related signals are present. It is noted that this technique can be applied without prior knowledge of the echo characteristics.
