Experimental results of a deflected thrust V/STOL nozzle research program

Four deflected thrust nozzle concepts, designed to operate at the low pressure ratio typical of high bypass-ratio turbofan engines for medium speed (subsonic) V/STOL aircraft, were studied. Maps of overall performance characteristics and exit velocity distributions are used to highlight similarities and differences between the four concepts. Analytically determined secondary flows at the exit of a 90 deg circular pipe bend are compared with the experimental results from the more complex three dimensional geometries. The relative impact of total-pressure losses and secondary flows on nozzle thrust coefficient is addressed by numerical integration of exit velocity measurements. Satellite-tracking and Earth dynamics research programs

The Arequipa station obtained a total of 31,989 quick-look range observations on 719 passes in the six months. Data were acquired from Metsahovi, San Fernando, Kootwijk, Wettzell, Grasse, Simosato, Graz, Dodaira and Herstmonceux. Work progressed on the setup of SAO 1. Discussions were also initiated with the Israelis on the relocation of SAO-3 to a site in southern Israel in FY-1984. Arequipa and the cooperating stations continued to track LAGEOS at highest priority for polar motion and Earth rotation studies, and for other geophysical investigations, including crustal dynamics, earth and ocean tides, and the general development of precision orbit determination. SAO completed the revisions to its field software as a part of its recent upgrading program. With cesium standards Omega receivers, and other timekeeping aids, the station was able to maintain a timing accuracy of better than plus or minus 6 to 8 microseconds.

Stellar Ultraviolet Rocket Research Program

A 1/4 meter ultraviolet spectrometer, developed to measure the ultraviolet flux from several standard type stars was flown successfully on Aerobee rockets. The ultraviolet flux from alpha Lyr, eta U Ma, zeta Oph, delta Ori, alpha CMa, beta CMa, and alpha Leo were measured. These values agreed with the OAO data obtained by Code in the 1200 to 3400 A region to + or - 9%. The design and calibration of a faint object spectrometer for observing stars and nebula with a 3 A resolution and a 3% accuracy in a 60 second observation are discussed.

Satellite tracking and Earth dynamics research programs

Following an upgrading program, ranging performance capabilities of a satellite-tracking pulsed laser system were assessed in terms of range accuracy, range noise, data yield, and reliability. With a shorter laser pulse duration (2.5 to 3.0 NSEC) and a new analog pulse processing system, the systematic range errors were reduced to 3 to 5 cm and range noise was reduced to 5 to 16 cm and range noise was reduced to 5 to 15 cm on Starlette and BE-C, and 10 to 18 cm on LAGEOS. Maximum pulse repetition rate was increased to 30 pulses per minute and significant improvement was made in signal to noise ratio by installing a 3 A interference filter and by reducing the range gate window to 200 to 400 nsec. The solution to a problem involving leakage of a fraction of the laser oscillator pulse through the pulse chopper was outlined.

A research program in determination of heavy metals in sediments and benthic species in relation to nuclear power plant operation

Heavy metals in the estuarine environment can be toxic to fish and shellfish early life history stages and concentrations build up to levels of concern in marketable shellfish. The present survey was begun just before startup in 1974 of the 1900 megawatt Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant on the Chesapeake Bay in order to assess and understand factors relating to heavy metal accumulation in estuarine biota. Oysters were collected in large numbers at test and reference sites in June 1974 to 77 and individually analyzed for copper and zinc. Oyster copper and zinc concentrations were correlated with salinity read at time of collection. The relationship of oyster age to metal concentration was examined with two sets of oysters of known age and genetic origin (laboratory spawned). Copper sorption by typical mid Bay sediments, and field studies on cadmium concentrations in sediments were examined.

A review of US Army aircrew-aircraft integration research programs

If the U.S. Army's desire to develop a one crew version of the Light Helicopter Family (LHX) helicopter is to be realized, both flightpath management and mission management will have to be performed by one crew. Flightpath management, the helicopter pilot, and the handling qualities of the helicopter were discussed. In addition, mission management, the helicopter pilot, and pilot control/display interface were considered. Aircrew-aircraft integration plans and programs were reviewed.

A review of US Army aircrew-aircraft integration research programs

The desire of the Army for a one crew helicopter that can perform the scout and attack role is forcing the integration of handling qualities and mission management disciplines and concerns. Some recent studies and results in these disciplines are reviewed. The need for a more unified approach to support new helicopter development is described along with a plan to develop fundamental principles needed for efficient man machine interface design.

Theoretical research program to study transition metal trimers and embedded clusters

Small transition metal clusters were studied at a high level of approximation, including all the valence electrons in the calculation and extensive electron correlation, in order to understand the electronic structure of these small metal clusters. By comparison of dimers, trimers, and possibly higher clusters, the information obtained was used to provide insights into the electronic structure of bulk transition metals. Small metal clusters are currently of considerable experimental interest and some information is becomming available both from matrix electron spin resonance studies and from gas phase spectroscopy. Collaboration between theorists and experimentalists is thus expected to be especially profitable at this time since there is some experimental information which can serve to guide the theoretical work.

The X-29 flight-research program

The X-29 experimental aircraft, which is a technology integration and evaluation platform for such features as static longitudinal instability, sweptforward wings and three-surface longitudinal control, offers an opportunity to validate the entire aircrft design process through careful correlation and comparison of flight test results with wind tunnel results and design predictions. Attention is presently given to the design features of the aircraft, which encompass supercritical airfoils, digital flight control, and aeroelastically tailored composite wings, as well as to the flight test program that was formulated to investigate the interactions and relative merits of these design features, in light of data gathered by carefully positioned sensors.

Theoretical research program to study transition metal trimers and embedded clusters

Small transition metal clusters at a high level of approximation i.e. including all the valence electrons in the calculation and also including extensive electron correlation were studied. Perhaps the most useful end result of these studies is the qualitative information about the electronic structure of these small metal clusters, including the nature of the bonding. The electronic structure studies of the small clusters are directly applicable to problems in catalysis. From comparison of dimers, trimers and possibly higher clusters, it is possible to extrapolate the information obtained to provide insights into the electronic structure of bulk transition metals and their interaction with other atoms and molecules at both surface and interior locations.

Theoretical research program to study chemical reactions in AOTV bow shock tubes

Progress in the development of computational methods for the characterization of chemical reactions in aerobraking orbit transfer vehicle (AOTV) propulsive flows is reported. Two main areas of code development were undertaken: (1) the implementation of CASSCF (complete active space self-consistent field) and SCF (self-consistent field) analytical first derivatives on the CRAY X-MP; and (2) the installation of the complete set of electronic structure codes on the CRAY 2. In the area of application calculations the main effort was devoted to performing full configuration-interaction calculations and using these results to benchmark other methods. Preprints describing some of the systems studied are included.
