One-dimensional Holstein model revisited

Here, we analyze the global ground-state (quantum) phase diagram of the one-dimensional spinful Holstein model at half filling as a function of the strength of the electron-phonon coupling (represented by the strength of the phonon-induced attraction, U) and the phonon frequency ω 0 . In addition to reanalyzing the various asymptotic regimes, we carry out density-matrix renormalization group simulations to correct previous inferences concerning the antiadiabatic (large ω 0 ) and strong-coupling (large U) regimes. There are two distinct phases—a fully gapped commensurate charge-density-wave phase and a spin-gapped Luther-Emery phase with a gapless charge mode—separated by a phase boundary, with a shape that reflects different microscopic physics in the weak- and strong-coupling limits.

Pair density wave in the doped three-band Hubbard model on two-leg square cylinders

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting (SC) state with a spatially modulated order parameter. Although much is known about the properties of the PDW state, its realization in microscopic models with divergent susceptibility has been challenging. Here, in this work, we report a density-matrix renormalization group study of a three-band Hubbard model (also known as the Emery model) for cuprates on long two-leg square cylinders. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with that of a PDW state with mutually commensurate and power-law SC, charge (CDW), and spin (SDW) density wave correlations. The SC correlations are dominant between neighboring Cu sites with d-wave pairing symmetry. Interestingly, we find that the near-neighbor interactions, especially the near-neighbor attractive V pd interaction between neighboring Cu and oxygen sites, can notably enhance the SC correlations while simultaneously suppressing the CDW correlations. For a modestly strong attractive V pd , the SC correlations become quasi-long-ranged with a divergent PDW susceptibility.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Here we study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- (J 1 ), next-nearest- (J 2 ), and third-neighbor (J 3 ) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to L x =48 and circumference L y =6–12. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of J 3 interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Triplet pair density wave superconductivity on the π -flux square lattice

Pair-density waves (PDWs) are superconducting states that spontaneously break translation symmetry in systems with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Evidence for PDWs has been seen in several recent experiments, as well as in the pseudogap regime in cuprates. Theoretical understanding of PDWs has been largely restricted to phenomenological and numerical studies, while microscopic theories typically require strong coupling or fine tuning. In this work, we provide a symmetry-based mechanism under which PDWs emerge as a weak-coupling instability of a two-dimensional TRS metal. Combining mean-field and renormalization-group analyses, we identify a weak-coupling instability towards a triplet PDW realized in the π-flux square lattice model with on-site repulsion and moderate nearest-neighbor attraction when the Fermi level crosses Van Hove singularities at 1/4 and 3/4 fillings. Further, this PDW is protected by the magnetic translation symmetries characteristic of Hofstadter systems, of which the π-flux lattice is a special time-reversal-symmetric case.

Obstructions to gapped phases from noninvertible symmetries

Quantum systems in 3+1 dimensions that are invariant under gauging a one-form symmetry enjoy novel noninvertible duality symmetries encoded by topological defects. These symmetries are renormalization group invariants which constrain dynamics. We show that such noninvertible symmetries often forbid a symmetry-preserving vacuum state with a gapped spectrum. In particular, we prove that a self-dual theory with $\mathbb{Z}^{(1)}_N$ one-form symmetry is gapless or spontaneously breaks the self-duality symmetry unless N = k 2 ⁢ℓ where –1 is a quadratic residue modulo . We also extend these results to noninvertible symmetries arising from invariance under more general gauging operations including, e.g., triality symmetries. Along the way, we discover how duality defects in symmetry-protected topological phases have a hidden time-reversal symmetry that organizes their basic properties. These noninvertible symmetries are realized in lattice gauge theories, which serve to illustrate our results.

Hund bands in spectra of multiorbital systems

Spectroscopy experiments are routinely used to characterize the behavior of strongly correlated systems. An in-depth understanding of the different spectral features is thus essential. Here, we show that the spectrum of the multiorbital Hubbard model exhibits unique Hund bands that occur at energies given only by the Hund coupling J H , as distinct from the Hubbard satellites following the interaction U. We focus on experimentally relevant single-particle and optical spectra that we calculate for a model related to iron chalcogenide ladders. The calculations are performed via the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos methods. Finally, the generality of the implications is verified by considering a generic multiorbital model within dynamical mean-field theory.

Quantum order by disorder in frustrated spin nanotubes

Here we investigate quantum order by disorder in a frustrated spin nanotube formed by wrapping a J1–J2 Heisenberg model at 45° around a cylinder. Using Schwinger boson theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we have computed the ground-state phase diagram to reveal a Z2 phase in which collinear spin stripes form a right- or left-handed helix around the nanotube. We have derived an analytic estimate for the critical η c = J 1 /2J 2 of the Z 2 -helical phase transition, which is in agreement with the DMRG results. By evaluating the entanglement spectrum and nonlocal string order parameters we discuss the topology of the Z 2 -helical phase.

Ground-state phase diagram and superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders

Here, we have studied the ground state properties of Hubbard model on long six-leg square cylinders with doped hole concentration per site 5.55%≤δ≤12.5% using density-matrix renormalization group. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we find that the nature of the ground state is remarkably sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping t'. In the positive t' side, we find a robust d-wave superconducting (SC) phase characterized by coexisting quasi-long-range SC and charge density wave (CDW) correlations. Without t' the ground state forms an insulating stripe phase with long-range CDW order but short-range spin-spin and SC correlations. In stark contrast to four-leg cylinders, our results show that the lightly doped Hubbard model on six-leg cylinders remains insulating in the negative t' side where the SC correlations decay exponentially with short correlation lengths. In the larger negative t' side, the doped holes form a novel holon Wigner crystal with one doped hole per emergent unit cell and short-range spin-spin correlations.

Block Mott insulating state induced by next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the S = 3 2 zigzag chain BaCoTe 2 O 7

Quasi-one-dimensional correlated electronic multiorbital systems with either ladder or chain geometries continue attracting considerable interest due to their complex electronic phases arising from the interplay of the hopping matrix, the crystal-field splitting, the electronic correlations (Hubbard repulsion U and Hund coupling J H ), and strong quantum fluctuations. Recently, the intriguing cobalt zigzag chain system BaCoTe 2 ⁢ O 7 , with electronic density n=7, was prepared experimentally. Here, we systematically study the electronic and magnetic properties of this quasi-one-dimensional compound from the theoretical perspective. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, strongly anisotropic one-dimensional electronic Co 3⁢d bands were found near the Fermi level. By evaluating the relevant hopping amplitudes, we provide the magnitude and origin of the nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping matrices in BaCoTe 2 ⁢ O 7 . With this information, we constructed a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this zigzag chain system, and studied two cases: with only a NN hopping matrix, and with NN plus NNN hopping matrices. Introducing the Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group method, we constructed the ground-state phase diagram. A robust staggered ↑ - ↓ - ↑ - ↓ antiferromagnetic (AFM) region was found when only the NN hopping matrix in the chain direction was employed. However, for the realistic case where the NNN hopping matrix is also included, the dominant state becomes instead a block AFM ↑ - ↑ - ↓ - ↓ order, in agreement with experiments. The system displays Mott insulator characteristics with three half-filled orbitals, when the block AFM order is stable. In conclusion, our results for BaCoTe 2 ⁢O 7 provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this zigzag one-dimensional chain and related materials.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of ~22 meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V 4+ and nonmagnetic V 5+ ions, which reveals the importance of the orbital degree of freedom in determining the chain axis as identified by prior electronic structure calculations. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at T N ~ 5.3 K, while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr 2 ⁢V 3 ⁢O 9 as a host of weakly coupled S = 1/2 chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of ~7.1(1) meV.

Sublattice modulated superconductivity in the kagome Hubbard model

Here we identify a superconducting order featuring spatial pair modulations on the kagome lattice subject to onsite Hubbard U and nearest neighbor V interactions. Within our functional renormalization group analysis, this state appears with a concomitant d-wave superconducting (SC) instability at zero lattice momentum, where it distinguishes itself through intra-unit cell modulations of the pairing function thus breaking the discrete space group symmetry. The relative weight of the sublattice modulated superconductor (SMS) and d-wave SC is influenced by the absolute interaction strength and coupling ratio V/U. Parametrically adjacent to this domain at weak coupling, we find an intra-unit cell modulated vestigial charge density wave and an s-wave SC instability. Our study provides a microscopic setting and thorough description of this novel SMS arising within a translation symmetry broken background.

Topological Kondo effect with spinful Majorana fermions

Motivated by the importance of studying topological superconductors beyond the mean-field approximation, we here investigate mesoscopic islands of time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors. We characterize the spectrum in the presence of strong order-parameter fluctuations in the presence of an arbitrary number of Kramers pairs of Majorana edge states and study the effect of coupling the Coulomb blockaded island to external leads. In the case of an odd fermionic parity on the island, we derive an unconventional Kondo Hamiltonian in which metallic leads couple to both topological Majorana degrees of freedom (which keep track of the parity in different leads) and the overall spin 1 2 in the island. For the simplest case of a single wire (two pairs of Majorana edge states), we demonstrate that anisotropies are irrelevant in the weak coupling renormalization group flow. This permits us to solve the Kondo problem in the vicinity of a Toulouse-type point using Abelian bosonization. We demonstrate a residual ground-state entropy of ln ( 2 ) , which is protected by spin-rotation symmetry, but reduced to ln ( 2 ) (as in the spinless topological Kondo effect) by symmetry-breaking perturbations. In the symmetric case, we further demonstrate the simultaneous presence of both Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid-like thermodynamics (depending on the observable) and derive charge and spin transport signatures of the Coulomb blockaded island. Phase diagram of the one-dimensional t 1 - t 2 - J model: Ferromagnetism, triplet pairing, and charge and pair density waves

Here, we present a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of an extended t-J model with hopping to the first and second neighbors -- the one dimensional t 1 -t 2 -J model. The full phase diagram as a function of the density n and exchange strength J, for both positive and negative values of t 2 , is obtained. For t 2 = -0.5 we observe that, in the strongly interacting region, Nagaoka Ferromagnetism (FM) is accompanied by a triplet pair density wave (PDW) upon doping. As the spin exchange J increases, a charge density wave (CDW) phase emerges and then gives way to singlet superconductivity (SC). This phase behaves as a singlet PDW with vanishing spacial average of the order parameter and a spin gap. When t 2 = 0.5, the physics is basically reminiscent of the conventional t-J model, undergoing a transition from a metallic to a SC phase as a function of J.

Luttinger liquid phase in the Aubry-André Hubbard chain

We study the interplay between an on-site Hubbard repulsion and quasiperiodic potential in one-dimensional fermion chains using the density matrix renormalization group. We find that, at half-filling, the quasiperiodic potential can destroy the Mott gap, leading to a metallic Luttinger liquid phase between the gapped Mott insulator at strong repulsion and localized gapless Aubry- André insulator at strong quasiperiodic potential. Away from half-filing, the metallic phase of the interacting model persists to larger critical strengths of the potential than in the non-interacting case, suggesting interaction-stabilized delocalization at finite doping. Here, we characterize the Luttinger liquid through its charge and spin correlations, structure factors, and entanglement entropy.

Influence of extended interactions on spin dynamics in one-dimensional cuprates

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials provide a unique platform for understanding the importance and influence of extended interactions on the physics of strongly correlated systems due to their relative structural simplicity and the existence of powerful theoretical tools well-adapted to one spatial dimension. Recently, this was highlighted by anomalous observations in the single-particle spectral function A(q, ω) of 1D cuprate chain compounds, measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which were explained by the presence of a long-range attractive interaction. Such an extended interaction should leave its fingerprints on other observables, notably the dynamical spin structure factor S(q, ω), measured by neutron scattering or resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Starting from a simple Hubbard Hamiltonian in 1D and using time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) methods, we show that the presence of long-range attractive coupling, directly through an instantaneous Coulomb interaction V or retarded electron phonon (el-ph) coupling, can introduce significant spectral weight redistribution in S(q, ω) across a wide range of doping. Here, this underscores the significant impact that extended interactions can have on dynamical correlations among particles, and the importance of properly incorporating this influence in modeling. Our results demonstrate that S(q, ω) can provide a sensitive experimental constraint, which complements ARPES measurements, in identifying key interactions in 1D cuprates, beyond the standard Hubbard model.

Pairing tendencies in the doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model

Here, we study the impact of hole doping on the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We investigate the pairing tendencies and correlation functions in the framework of a t - J - K model using density matrix renormalization group calculations on three-leg cylinders. In the case of the pure Kitaev model, which realizes a quantum spin-liquid phase at half-filling, we find that binding of two holes only occurs at low values of the hopping, where the holes are slow. We have theoretically verified that pair formation occurs in the limit of immobile holes, where the pure Kitaev model remains exactly solvable. When we instead fix the hopping at an intermediate, more realistic, value, and vary the Heisenberg and Kitaev interaction strengths, we find pairing tendencies only in the Néel phase. This is in contrast to prior mean-field calculations, highlighting the importance of accounting for the kinetic energy of dopants in generalized Kitaev models. Interestingly, we also find signatures of pair-density wave formation over the studied range of model parameters, namely, a periodic modulation of the charge density as well as the spin-spin and pair-pair correlations in real space. Moreover, we present a comparative study of the different correlations as a function of doping. We finally discuss the potential for experimentally observing the studied physics in quantum materials and heterostructures.

Nature of temperature chaos in spin glasses

Temperature chaos (TC) in spin glasses has been claimed to exist no matter how small the temperature change, Δ⁢T. However, experimental studies have exhibited a finite value of Δ⁢T for a transition to TC. This paper explores the onset of TC with much higher resolution than before and over a larger temperature range. We find that TC is always present, though small at the smallest Δ⁢T that we can reliably measure. However, it grows rapidly as Δ⁢T increases, the region of rapid growth coinciding with the Δ⁢T predicted from renormalization group arguments and observed experimentally. Here, we are able to transcend the full range of TC, from the completely reversible state to one that is maximally decorrelated from the initially prepared state.

Benchmark neutrinoless double- β decay matrix elements in a light nucleus

We compute nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-β decay mediated by light Majorana-neutrino exchange in the $\textit{A}$ = 6 system. The goal for this work is to benchmark two many-body approaches, the no-core shell model and the multireference in-medium similarity renormalization group (SRG). We use a SRG-evolved next-to-next-to-next-to-leading chiral order two-body potential for the nuclear interaction, and make the approximation that the isospin is conserved. We compare the results of the two approaches as a function of the cutoff on the many-body basis space. Although differences are seen in the predicted nuclear radii, the ground-state energies and neutrinoless double-β decay matrix elements produced by the two approaches show significant agreement. We discuss the implications for calculations in heavier nuclei.
