Effect of set size, age, and mode of stimulus presentation on information-processing speed.

First, second, and third grade pupils served as subjects in an experiment designed to show the effect of age, mode of stimulus presentation, and information value on recognition time. Stimuli were presented in picture and printed word form and in groups of 2, 4, and 8. The results of the study indicate that first graders are slower than second and third graders who are nearly equal. There is a gross shift in reaction time as a function of mode of stimulus presentation with increase in age. The first graders take much longer to identify words than pictures, while the reverse is true of the older groups. With regard to set size, a slope appears in the pictures condition in the older groups, while for first graders, a large slope occurs in the words condition and only a much smaller one for pictures.

A unified development of several techniques for the representation of random vectors and data sets

Linear vector space theory is used to develop a general representation of a set of data vectors or random vectors by linear combinations of orthonormal vectors such that the mean squared error of the representation is minimized. The orthonormal vectors are shown to be the eigenvectors of an operator. The general representation is applied to several specific problems involving the use of the Karhunen-Loeve expansion, principal component analysis, and empirical orthogonal functions; and the common properties of these representations are developed.

Dynamical models for a spacecraft idealized as a set of multi-hinged rigid bodies

A brief description is presented of a canonical set of equations which governs the behavior of an n-body spacecraft. General results are given for the case in which the spacecraft is modeled in terms of n rigid bodies connected by dissipative elastic joints. The final equations are free from constraint torques and involve only r variables (r is the number of degrees of freedom of the system). An advantage which accompanies the elimination of the constraint torques is a decrease in the computer run time (especially when n is large).

The geologic setting of the Luna 20 site.

Based on a study of the oblique portion of Apollo 16 panoramic photographs, a descriptions is presented of the geologic setting of the Soviet Luna 20 landing site. The complexly faulted terrain at this site has probably been involved in many generations of shattering and uplift produced by impacts which formed the large basin ring structures. Preliminary analysis of samples and photography indicates some similarities between the Luna 20 and Apollo 16 landing sites.

Motivation in vigilance - A test of the goal-setting hypothesis of the effectiveness of knowledge of results.

This study tested the prediction, derived from the goal-setting hypothesis, that the facilitating effects of knowledge of results (KR) in a simple vigilance task should be related directly to the level of the performance standard used to regulate KR. Two groups of Ss received dichotomous KR in terms of whether Ss response times (RTs) to signal detections exceeded a high or low standard of performance. The aperiodic offset of a visual signal was the critical event for detection. The vigil was divided into a training phase followed by testing, during which KR was withdrawn. Knowledge of results enhanced performance in both phases. However, the two standards used to regulate feedback contributed little to these effects.

Analytical satellite theories based on a new set of canonical elements

A new analytical satellite theory is presented. Instead of the 6 classical elements of Delaunay, a set of 8 canonical elements is used. Whereas the time is the independent variable in classical theory, the true anomaly is the independent variable in the new theory. The new approach has four features: (1) The amount of formulas in the solution is reduced considerably. (2) The first order results are almost as accurate as second order results in classical theory. (3) The theory is easier to understand from a didactical point of view. (4) The problems connected with the inaccuracy of the mean motion that are typical for classical satellite theory are no longer present. The new elements are applied to analytical solutions of the zonal oblateness problem and to the problem of the 24 hour satellite.

Wave propagation in a random medium - A complete set of the moment equations with different wavenumbers

The propagation of waves in a random medium is studied in the 'quasi-optics' and the 'Markov random process' approximations. Under these assumptions, a Fokker-Planck equation satisfied by the characteristic functional of the random wave field is derived. A complete set of moment equations with different transverse coordinates and different wave numbers is then obtained from the Fokker-Planck equation of the characteristic functional. The application of those results to the pulse smearing of the pulsar signal and the frequency correlation function of the wave intensity in interstellar scintillation is briefly discussed.

Pseudo-noise test set for communication system evaluation

A test set for communications systems is described which includes a pseudo noise sequence generator providing a test signal that is fed to a pair of signal channels. The first channel includes a spectrum shaping filter and a conditioning amplifier. The second channel includes a variable delay circuit, a spectrum shaping filter matched to the first filter, and an amplifier. The output of the first channel was applied to the system under test. The output of the system and the output of the second channel are compared to determine the degree of distortion suffered by the test signal due to the communications system.

A multilevel multispectral data set analysis in the visible and infrared wavelength regions

Skylab multispectral scanner data, digitized Skylab color infrared (IR) photography, digitized Skylab black and white multiband photography, and Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) multispectral scanner data collected within a 24-hr time period over an area in south-central Indiana near Bloomington on June 9 and 10, 1973, were compared in a machine-aided land use analysis of the area. The overall classification performance results, obtained with nine land use classes, were 87% correct classification using the 'best' 4 channels of the Skylab multispectral scanner, 80% for the channels on the Skylab multispectral scanner which are spectrally comparable to the ERTS multispectral scanner, 88% for the ERTS multispectral scanner, 83% for the digitized color IR photography, and 76% for the digitized black and white multiband photography. The results indicate that the Skylab multispectral scanner may yield even higher classification accuracies when a noise-filtered multispectral scanner data set becomes available in the near future.

A computer program using Lemke, Salkin and Spielberg's Set Covering Algorithm (SCA) to optimize a traffic model problem in the Scheduling Algorithm for Mission Planning and Logistics Evaluation (SAMPLE) was documented. SCA forms a submodule of SAMPLE and provides for input and output, subroutines, and an interactive feature for performing the optimization and arranging the results in a readily understandable form for output.

Performance of 1.15-pressure-ratio fan stage at several rotor blade setting angles with reverse flow

A 51 cm diameter low pressure ratio fan stage was tested in reverse flow. Survey flow data were taken over the range of rotative speed from 50 percent to 100 percent design speed at several rotor blade setting angles through both flat and feather pitch. Normal flow design values of pressure ratio and weight flow were 1.15 and 29.9 kg/sec with a rotor tip speed of 243.8 m/sec. The maximum thrust in reverse flow was 52.5 percent of design thrust in normal flow.

The models and associated computer programs are described.

Development and evaluation of a set of group delay standards

A set of cable assemblies serving as group delay standards having nominal delays of 15, 30, and 60 nsec are described. Various types of measurements were performed on the cable standards, including impedance, microwave phase shift, RF pulse burst delay, modulation pulsed delay, and envelope phase shift measurements. The results of these tests are given, and various sources of error are discussed, in particular, dispersion and internal reflections.
