Software Requirements for a Sample Check-in application in CBRNResponder

In 2021, functional area drills were held that focused on field sample collection and custody transfer at the sample control hotline for the Radiological Assistance Program (RAP) Consequence Management (CM) program. The overarching goal of these drills were to evaluate the current CM processes using the CBRNResponder mobile and web-based applications. There were several needs identified to improve CM processes and to stream/transfer data across multiple devices with and without internet: (1) A sample check-in process is needed to streamline current processes to reduce errors and create efficiencies, (2) the sample check-in application needs to be deployed as a mobile application and on the browser versions when on-line, and (3) the sample check-in process needs to function in an environment with internet connections and also in a standalone mode when internet is not available.

Particle emission from artificial cometary materials

During KOSI (comet simulation) experiments, mineral-ice mixtures are observed in simulated space conditions. Emission of ice-/dust particles from the sample surface is observed by means of different devices. The particle trajectories are recorded with a video system. In the following analysis we extracted the parameters: particle count rate, spatial distribution of starting points on the sample surface, and elevation angle and particle velocity at distances up to 5 cm from the sample surface. Different kinds of detectors are mounted on a frame in front of the sample to register the emitted particles and to collect their dust residues. By means of these instruments the particle count rates, the particle sizes and the composition of the particles can be correlated. The results are related to the gas flux density and the temperature on the sample surface during the insolation period. The particle emission is interpreted in terms of phenomena on the sample surface, e.g., formation of a dust mantle.

Integrated solid-state rapid thermo-cycling system

Techniques, systems, and devices are disclosed for implementing a portable lab system for PCR testing. An example method for operating an integrated thermal cycling system includes depositing samples into the integrated thermal cycling system that includes a thermal cycling device and an electronic interface. The thermal cycling device includes multiple wells to receive the samples to be thermally cycled, a thermoelectric cooling (TEC) element connected to the multiple wells, a substrate on which the TEC element is positioned, and a controller coupled to the TEC element. The multiple wells are positioned within the substrate that includes a thermally conductive ground positioned between adjacent wells. Supplying power to the integrated thermal cycling system, via the electronic interface, allows the multiple wells to exchange heat with the substrate and for each well to operate independently from other wells.

Theoferometer for High Accuracy Optical Alignment and Metrology

The accurate measurement of the orientation of optical parts and systems is a pressing problem for upcoming space missions, such as stellar interferometers, requiring the knowledge and maintenance of positions to the sub-arcsecond level. Theodolites, the devices commonly used to make these measurements, cannot provide the needed level of accuracy. This paper describes the design, construction, and testing of an interferometer system to fill the widening gap between future requirements and current capabilities. A Twyman-Green interferometer mounted on a 2 degree of freedom rotation stage is able to obtain sub-arcsecond, gravity-referenced tilt measurements of a sample alignment cube. Dubbed a 'theoferometer,' this device offers greater ease-of-use, accuracy, and repeatability than conventional methods, making it a suitable 21st-century replacement for the theodolite.

Temperature coefficients and radiation induced DLTS spectra of MOCVD grown n(+)p InP solar cells

The effects of temperature and radiation on n(+)p InP solar cells and mesa diodes grown by metallorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were studied. It was shown that MOCVD is capable of consistently producing good quality InP solar cells with Eff greater than 19 percent which display excellent radiation resistance due to minority carrier injection and thermal annealing. It was also shown that universal predictions of InP device performance based on measurements of a small group of test samples can be expected to be quite accurate, and that the degradation of an InP device due to any incident particle spectrum should be predictable from a measurement following a single low energy proton irradiation.

Design and Modelling of a Microfluidic Electro-Lysis Device with Controlling Plates

Many Lab-on-Chip applications require sample pre-treatment systems. Using electric fields to perform cell-lysis in bio-MEMS systems has provided a powerful tool which can be integrated into Lab-on-a-Chip platforms. The major design considerations for electro-lysis devices include optimal geometry and placement of micro-electrodes, cell concentration, flow rates, optimal electric field (e.g. pulsed DC vs. AC), etc. To avoid electrolysis of the flowing solution at the exposed electrode surfaces, magnitudes and the applied voltages and duration of the DC pulse, or the AC frequency of the AC, have to be optimized for a given configuration. Using simulation tools for calculation of electric fields has proved very useful, for exploring alternative configurations and operating conditions for achieving electro cell-lysis. To alleviate the problem associated with low electric fields within the microfluidics channel and the high voltage demand on the contact electrode strips, two "control plates" are added to the microfluidics configuration. The principle of placing the two controlling plate-electrodes is based on the electric fields generated by a combined insulator/dielectric (gladwater) media. Surface charges are established at the insulator/dielectric interface. This paper discusses the effects of this interface charge on the modification of the electric field of the flowing liquid/cell solution.

Scanning SQUID characterization of extremely overdoped La 2-x Sr x CuO 4

Recently, advances in film synthesis methods have enabled a study of extremely overdoped La 2 - x Sr x Cu O 4 . This has revealed a surprising behavior of the superfluid density as a function of doping and temperature, the explanation of which is vividly debated. One popular class of models posits electronic phase separation, where the superconducting phase fraction decreases with doping, while some competing phase (e.g., ferromagnetic) progressively takes over. A problem with this scenario is that all the way up to the dome edge the superconducting transition remains sharp, according to mutual inductance measurements. However, the physically relevant scale is the Pearl penetration depth Λ P , and this technique probes the sample on a length scale L that is much larger than Λ P . In the present paper, we use local scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements that probe the susceptibility of the sample on the scale L << Λ P . Our SQUID maps show uniform landscapes of susceptibility and excellent overall agreement of the local penetration depth data with the bulk measurements. Overall, these results contribute an important piece to the puzzle of how high-temperature superconductivity vanishes on the overdoped side of the cuprate phase diagram.

Estimation of proportions of objects and determination of training sample-size in a remote sensing application

A multichannel scanning device may fail to observe objects because of obstructions blocking the view, or different categories of objects may make up a resolution element giving rise to a single observation. Ground truth will be required on any such categories of objects in order to estimate their expected proportions associated with various classes represented in the remote sensing data. Considering the classes to be distributed as multivariate normal with different mean vectors and common covariance, maximum likelihood estimates are given for the expected proportions of objects associated with different classes, using the Bayes procedure for classification of individuals obtained from these classes. An approximate solution for simultaneous confidence intervals on these proportions is given, and thereby a sample-size needed to achieve a desired amount of accuracy for the estimates is determined.

Temperature Dependent Spin Dynamics in La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 /Pt Bilayers

Complex ferromagnetic oxides such as La 0.67 Sr 0.33 MnO 3 (LSMO) offer pathways for creating energy‐efficient spintronic devices with new functionalities. LSMO exhibits high‐temperature ferromagnetism, half metallicity, sharp resonance linewidth, low damping, and a large anisotropic magnetoresistance response. Combined with Pt, a proven material with high spin‐charge conversion efficiency, LSMO can be used to create robust nano‐oscillators for neuromorphic computing. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and device‐level spin‐pumping FMR measurements are performed to investigate the magnetization dynamics and spin transport in NdGaO 3 (110)/LSMO(15 nm)/Pt(0 and 5 nm) thin films ranging from 300 K to 90 K and compare the device performance with Py(7 nm)/Pt(5 nm) sample. The spin current pumped into Pt is quantified to determine the temperature‐dependent influence of interfacial interactions. The generated spin current in the micro‐device is maximum at 170 K for the optimally grown LSMO/Pt films. Additionally, this bilayer system exhibits low magnetic Gilbert damping (0.002), small linewidth (12 Oe), and a large spin Hall angle (≈3.2%) at 170 K. Ex situ deposited LSMO/Pt bilayers demonstrate excellent dynamic response, exhibiting fourfold enhancement in signal output, eightfold reduction in damping, and a threefold reduction in linewidth as compared to the Pt/Py system. Such robust device‐level performance can pave way for energy‐efficient spintronic‐based devices.

Democratization of fungal highway columns as a tool to investigate bacteria associated with soil fungi

ABSTRACT Bacteria–fungi interactions (BFIs) are essential in ecosystem functioning. These interactions are modulated not only by local nutritional conditions but also by the physicochemical constraints and 3D structure of the environmental niche. In soils, the unsaturated and complex nature of the substrate restricts the dispersal and activity of bacteria. Under unsaturated conditions, some bacteria engage with filamentous fungi in an interaction (fungal highways) in which they use fungal hyphae to disperse. Based on a previous experimental device to enrich pairs of organisms engaging in this interaction in soils, we present here the design and validation of a modified version of this sampling system constructed using additive printing. The 3D printed devices were tested using a novel application in which a target fungus, the common coprophilous fungus Coprinopsis cinerea, was used as bait to recruit and identify bacterial partners using its mycelium for dispersal. Bacteria of the genera Pseudomonas, Sphingobacterium and Stenotrophomonas were highly enriched in association with C. cinerea. Developing and producing these new easy-to-use tools to investigate how bacteria overcome dispersal limitations in cooperation with fungi is important to unravel the mechanisms by which BFIs affect processes at an ecosystem scale in soils and other unsaturated environments.

An investigation of the SNS Josephson junction as a three-terminal device

A particular phenomenon of the SNS Josephson junction was investigated; i.e., control by a current entering the normal region and leaving through one of the superconducting regions. The effect of the control current on the junction was found to be dependent upon the ration of the resistances of the two halves of the N layer. A low frequency, lumped, nonlinear model was proposed to describe the electrical characteristics of the device, and a method was developed to plot the dynamic junction resistance as a function of junction current. The effective thermal noise temperature of the sample was determined. Small signal linearized analysis of the device suggests its use as an impedance transformer, although geometric limitations must be overcome. Linear approximation indicates that it is reciprocal and no power gain is possible. It is felt that, with suitable metallurgical and geometrical improvements, the device has promise to become a superconducting transistor.
