Identifying crystal structures and chemical reactions at the interface of stanene on Bi 2 Te 3

Synthesizing monolayers and heterostructures is an enabling approach to extract new physical phenomena from bulk materials. Among the structures amenable to this approach is stanene, which is a monolayer of tin, similar to graphene, and has been predicted to host one-dimensional topological states at its edges. Stanene can be tuned by decorating with different adatoms, which makes it a promising platform on which to engineer topological devices. Here, we deposit Sn on Bi 2 Te 3 and characterize the growth using anomalous synchrotron x-ray scattering and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). X-ray diffraction data reveal the formation of epitaxial Sn-based structures, along with penetration of Sn into the Bi 2 Te 3 , with Sn intercalating between the upper 10 Bi 2 Te 3 quintuple layers. Additionally, XPS data show deposited Sn reacting to form SnTe and Bi at the Bi 2 Te 3 surface. The calculated heat of reaction for Sn and Bi2Te3 is consistent with an exothermic reaction to SnTe and Bi. Using thermodynamic calculations as a guide, we identify several candidate substrates that can stabilize the stanene phase.

Magnetic and electronic structures of antiferromagnetic topological material candidate EuMg 2 Bi 2

In this work, EuMg 2 Bi 2 has been investigated to understand the electronic and magnetic behaviors as an antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological semimetal candidate. High-quality single crystals of EuMg 2 Bi 2 were grown via a Bi flux and, subsequently, characterized to be consistent with the previously reported bulk magnetic and resistivity properties. A ferromagnetic interaction is indicated by the positive Curie–Weiss temperature obtained through fitting the bulk magnetic susceptibility data. The bulk resistivity measurements reveal an interesting electronic behavior that is potentially influenced by a competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interaction in and out of the ab plane. From the resulting refinement of the neutron diffraction data, EuMg 2 Bi 2 was found to exhibit an A-type magnetic structure with Eu 2+ moments ferromagnetically aligned in the plane and antiferromagnetically stacked between neighbor ferromagnetic Eu layers. The power law fitting magnetic ordering parameter below TN~8 K agrees with the 2D Heisenberg model, indicating a weak interlayer antiferromagnetic interaction. Considering the magnetic structure determined by neutron diffraction, the surface state calculation suggests that EuMg 2 Bi 2 is an AFM topological insulator candidate. Linearly dispersed Dirac surface states were also observed in our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, consistent with the calculation.

Near-field spectroscopy of Dirac plasmons in Bi 2 Se 3 ribbon arrays

Plasmons supported in the massless electron surface states of topological insulators (TIs), known as Dirac plasmons, have great potential in next generation optoelectronics. However, their inherent confinement to the surface makes the investigation of Dirac plasmons challenging. Near-field techniques provide the ideal platform to directly probe Dirac plasmons due to the sensitivity to evanescent fields at the surface. Here, we demonstrate the use of aperture near-field spectroscopy for the investigation of localized terahertz (THz) Dirac plasmon resonances in Bi 2 Se 3 ribbon arrays with widths ranging from 10 to 40 µm. Unlike scattering THz near-field techniques, the aperture method is most sensitive to plasmons with the relevant lower-momenta corresponding to plasmon wavelengths on the scale of ~20 µm. The combination of THz time-domain spectroscopy and aperture near-field microscopy enables sampling of localized Dirac plasmons in the near-field zone in the 0.5–2.5 THz range. We map the plasmon dispersion, which reveals a coupled plasmon–phonon polariton interaction. The near-field spectra show a higher contrast of the upper polariton branch in comparison with far-field observations. The information revealed by aperture near-field spectroscopy could deepen our understanding of the behavior of Dirac plasmons, leading to the potential development of real-world TI devices.

Classifying photonic topology using the spectral localizer and numerical K -theory

Recently, the spectral localizer framework has emerged as an efficient approach for classifying topology in photonic systems featuring local nonlinearities and radiative environments. In nonlinear systems, this framework provides rigorous definitions for concepts such as topological solitons and topological dynamics, where a system’s occupation induces a local change in its topology due to nonlinearity. For systems embedded in radiative environments that do not possess a shared bulk spectral gap, this framework enables the identification of local topology and shows that local topological protection is preserved despite the lack of a common gap. However, as the spectral localizer framework is rooted in the mathematics of C*-algebras, and not vector bundles, understanding and using this framework requires developing intuition for a somewhat different set of underlying concepts than those that appear in traditional approaches for classifying material topology. In this tutorial, we introduce the spectral localizer framework from a ground-up perspective and provide physically motivated arguments for understanding its local topological markers and associated local measure of topological protection. In doing so, we provide numerous examples of the framework’s application to a variety of topological classes, including crystalline and higher-order topology. We then show how Maxwell’s equations can be reformulated to be compatible with the spectral localizer framework, including the possibility of radiative boundary conditions. To aid in this introduction, we also provide a physics-oriented introduction to multi-operator pseudospectral methods and numerical K-theory, two mathematical concepts that form the foundation for the spectral localizer framework. Finally, we provide some mathematically oriented comments on the C*-algebraic origins of this framework, including a discussion of real C*-algebras and graded C*-algebras that are necessary for incorporating physical symmetries. Looking forward, we hope that this tutorial will serve as an approachable starting point for learning the foundations of the spectral localizer framework.

151 Eu Mössbauer study of magnetic ordering in flux-grown ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic forms of EuCd 2 As 2

EuCd 2 As 2 is a remarkably complex magnetic semimetal that may behave as a topological insulator or host two pairs of Weyl points, depending on the growth conditions and the final magnetic state. Both antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) forms have been grown, and we show here, using 151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy, that the differences between the AFM and FM forms extend well beyond their ground state magnetic structures. Whereas the AFM form undergoes a conventional AFM → paramagnetic transition on warming, the FM form passes through a complex incommensurate modulated state before becoming paramagnetic.

Unusual dynamic susceptibility arising from soft ferromagnetic domains in MnBi 8 Te 13 and Sb-doped MnBi 2n Te 3n+1 (n = 2, 3)

MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$ (MBT) is the first intrinsic magnetic topological insulator and is promising to host emergent phenomena such as quantum anomalous Hall effect. They can be made ferromagnetic by having n ≥ 4 or with Sb doping. In this work, we studied the magnetic dynamics in a few selected ferromagnetic (FM) MBT compounds, including MnBi 8 Te 13 and Sb doped MnBi$_{2n}$Te$_{3n+1}$ ($n = 2, 3)$ using AC susceptibility and magneto-optical imaging. Slow relaxation behavior is observed in all three compounds, suggesting its universality among FM MBT. We attribute the origin of the relaxation behavior to the irreversible domain movements since they only appear below the saturation fields when ferromagnetic domains form. The very soft ferromagnetic domain nature is revealed by the low-field fine-structured domains and high-field sea-urchin-shaped remanent-state domains imaged via our magneto-optical measurements. Finally, we ascribe the rare 'double-peak' behavior observed in the AC susceptibility under small DC bias fields to the very soft ferromagnetic domain formations.

Scanning tunneling microscopy study of epitaxial Fe 3 GeTe 2 monolayers on Bi 2 Te 3

Abstract Introducing magnetism to the surface state of topological insulators, such as Bi 2 Te 3 , can lead to a variety of interesting phenomena. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a single quintuple layer (QL) of the van der Waals magnet Fe 3 GeTe 2 (FGT) that is grown on Bi 2 Te 3 via molecular beam epitaxy. STM topographic images show that the FGT grows as free-standing islands on Bi 2 Te 3 and outwards from Bi 2 Te 3 steps. Atomic resolution imaging shows triangular lattices of 390 ± 10 pm for FGT and 430 ± 10 pm for Bi 2 Te 3 , consistent with the respective bulk crystals. A moiré pattern is observed on FGT regions with a periodicity of 4.3 ± 0.4 nm that can be attributed solely to this lattice mismatch and thus indicates zero rotational misalignment. While most of the surface is covered by a single QL of the FGT, there are small double QL regions, as well as regions with distinct chemical terminations due to an incomplete QL. The most common partial QL surface termination is the FeGe layer, in which the top two atomic layers are missing. This termination has a distinctive electronic structure and a 3 x 3 R 30 ∘ reconstruction overlaid on the moiré pattern in STM images. Magnetic circular dichroism measurements confirm these thin FGT films are ferromagnetic withT C ∼190 K.

Full-film dry transfer of MBE-grown van der Waals materials

Abstract Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been used to create high-quality, large-scale two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials. However, due to the strong adhesion between the substrate and deposited materials, the peel-off and dry transfer of MBE-grown vdW films onto other substrates has been challenging. This limits the study and use of MBE films for heterogeneous integration including stacked and twisted heterostructures. In this work, we develop a polymer-assisted dry transfer method and successfully perform full-film transfer of various MBE-grown 2D vdW materials including transition metal dichalcogenides, topological insulators and 2D magnets. In particular, we transfer air-sensitive 2D magnets, characterize their magnetic properties, and compare them with as-grown materials. The results show that the transfer technique does not degrade the magnetic properties, with the Curie temperature and hysteresis loops exhibiting similar behaviors after the transfer. Our results enable further development of heterogeneous integration of 2D vdW materials based on MBE growth.

Copper migration and surface oxidation of CuxBi2Se3 in ambient pressure environments

Abstract Chemical modifications such as intercalation can be used to modify surface properties or to further functionalize the surface states of topological insulators (TIs). Using ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we report copper migration in C u x B i 2 S e 3 , which occurs on a timescale of hours to days after initial surface cleaving. The increase in near-surface copper proceeds along with the oxidation of the sample surface and large changes in the selenium content. These complex changes are further modeled with core-level spectroscopy simulations, which suggest a composition gradient near the surface which develops with oxygen exposure. Our results shed light on a new phenomenon that must be considered for intercalated TIs—and intercalated materials in general—that surface chemical composition can change when specimens are exposed to ambient conditions.

Influence of Bi alloying on GaAs valence band structure

Bi alloying is predicted to transform GaAs from a semiconductor to a topological insulator or semimetal. To date, studies of the GaAs 1−x Bi x alloy band structure have been limited, and the origins of Bi-induced enhancement of the spin-orbit splitting energy, Δ SO , are unresolved. Here, in this study, we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of droplet-free epitaxial GaAs 1−x Bi x films with x Bi = 0.06. In addition to quantifying the Bi-induced shifts of the light-hole and heavy-hole valence bands, we probe the origins of the Bi-enhanced Δ SO . Using exact-two-component density functional theory calculations, we identify the key role of Bi p-orbitals in the upward shift of the light-hole and heavy-hole bands that results in the Bi-enhanced Δ SO .

Nodeless Superconducting Gap in the Candidate Topological Superconductor Sn{sub 1-x}In{sub x}Te for x=0.7.

High-pressure synthesis techniques have allowed for the growth of Sn1-xInxTe samples beyond the ambient In-saturation limit of x = 0.5 (T-c similar to 4.5 K). In this study we present measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth Delta lambda(T) in this superconducting doped topological insulator for x = 0.7, where T-c(,onset) approximate to 5 K. The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity A(2u), pairing; however, odd-parity A(1u) in pairing is still possible. Critical field values measured below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented.

Magic-angle semimetals with chiral symmetry

Here, we construct and solve a two-dimensional, chirally symmetric model of Dirac cones subjected to a quasiperiodic modulation. In real space, this is realized with a quasiperiodic hopping term. This hopping model, as we show, at the Dirac node energy has a rich phase diagram with a semimetal-to-metal phase transition at intermediate amplitude of the quasiperiodic modulation, and a transition to a phase with a diverging density of states (DOS) and subdiffusive transport when the quasiperiodic hopping is strongest. We further demonstrate that the semimetal-to-metal phase transition can be characterized by the multifractal structure of eigenstates in momentum space and can be considered as a unique “unfreezing” transition. This unfreezing transition in momentum space generates flat bands with a dramatically renormalized bandwidth in the metallic phase similar to the phenomena of the band structure of twisted bilayer graphene at the magic angle. We characterize the nature of this transition numerically as well as analytically in terms of the formation of a band of topological zero modes. For pure quasiperiodic hopping, we provide strong numerical evidence that the low-energy DOS develops a divergence and the eigenstates exhibit Chalker (quantum-critical) scaling despite the model not being random. At particular commensurate limits the model realizes higher-order topological insulating phases. We discuss how these systems can be realized in experiments on ultracold atoms and metamaterials.

Topological superconductivity induced by a triple- q magnetic structure

Here we demonstrate that the recently discovered triple- q (3 q ) magnetic structure, when embedded in a magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) system, gives rise to the emergence of topological superconductivity. We investigate the structure of chiral Majorana edge modes at domain walls, and show that they can be distinguished from trivial in-gap modes through the spatial distribution of the induced supercurrents. Finally, we show that topological superconductivity in 3 q MSH systems is a robust phenomenon that does not depend on the relative alignment of the magnetic and superconducting layers, or on the presence of electronic degrees of freedom in the magnetic layer.

Correlation-assisted quantized charge pumping

Here, we investigate charge pumping in the vicinity of order-obstructed topological phases, i.e., symmetry-protected topological phases masked by spontaneous symmetry breaking in the presence of strong correlations. To explore this, we study a prototypical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with finite-range interaction that gives rise to orbital charge density wave order and characterize the impact of this order on the model's topological properties. In the ordered phase, where the many-body topological invariant loses quantization, we find that not only is quantized charge pumping still possible, but it is even assisted by the collective nature of the orbital charge density wave order. Remarkably, we show that the Thouless pump scenario may be used to uncover the underlying topology of order-obstructed phases.

Direct evidence of ferromagnetism in MnSb 2 Te 4

We report the magnetic imaging of ferromagnetic domains in the van der Waals single crystal MnSb 2 Te 4 from two different sources using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy. The magnetic field dependence of the domains reveals very weak pinning of domain walls in MnSb 2 Te 4 , resulting in a negligibly small magnetic hysteresis loop. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the domain contrast reveals a mean field like behavior, in good agreement with that of bulk magnetization measurements.

Universal signatures of Dirac fermions in entanglement and charge fluctuations

We study the entanglement entropy (EE) and charge fluctuations in models where the low-energy physics is governed by massless Dirac fermions. We focus on the response to flux insertion which, for the EE, is widely assumed to be universal, i.e., independent of the microscopic details. We provide an analytical derivation of the EE and charge fluctuations for the seminal example of graphene, using the dimensional reduction of its tight-binding model to the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Our asymptotic expression for the EE matches the conformal field theory prediction. We show that the charge variance has the same asymptotic behavior, up to a constant prefactor. To check the validity of universality arguments, we numerically consider several models, with different geometries and numbers of Dirac cones, and either for strictly two-dimensional models or for a gapless surface mode of three-dimensional topological insulators. We also show that the flux response does not depend on the entangling surface geometry as long as it encloses the flux. Finally we consider the universal corner contributions to the EE. We show that in the presence of corners, the Kitaev-Preskill subtraction scheme provides nonuniversal, geometry-dependent results.

Higher Chern numbers in multilayer Lieb lattices ( N ≥ 2 ): Topological transitions and quadratic band crossing lines

In this work, we consider a hitherto unexplored setting of a stacked multilayer (N) Lieb lattice which undergoes an unusual topological transition in the presence of intralayer spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The specific stacking configuration induces an effective nonsymmorphic two-dimensional lattice structure, even though the constituent monolayer Lieb lattice is characterized by a symmorphic space group. This emergent nonsymmorphicity leads to multiple doubly degenerate bands extending over the edge of the Brillouin zone (i.e., quadratic band crossing lines). In the presence of intralayer SOC, these doubly degenerate bands typically form three N-band subspaces, mutually separated by two band gaps. We analyze the topological properties of these multiband subspaces, using specially devised Wilson loop operators to compute non-Abelian Berry phases in order to show that they carry a higher Chern number N.

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.
