Physical interpretation of variations in total solar irradiance

Radiometry from the Solar Maximum Mission and Nimbus 7 satellites has demonstrated that the solar constant varies at a peak-to-peak level of up to 0.2 percent on time scales of weeks. The rotation and evolution of dark spots and bright faculae across the sun's disk accounts for most of that variation. Reasonable explanations have been put forward to explain how the spot-blocked heat flow might be stored, and to explain the source of the intense radiation that gives rise to the increased irradiance produced by the bright magnetic faculae. Time-dependent models of the response of the solar convection zone to small perturbations also indicate that slower variations in total solar irradiance of comparable magnitude are likely. More precise observations of the total solar irradiance and radius over long time scales are required to demonstrate the existence of such climatologically relevant changes, and to test models that would enable the interpretation and prediction of these changes.

October lower stratospheric Antarctic temperature and total ozone from 1979-1985

During October, from 1979 to 1985, Southern Hemisphere daily plots of TOMS total ozone and lower stratospheric temperature are shown to be strongly correlated. The same result is found for the monthly averages. Additionally, these data reveal strong wave events during the ozone hole period. October zonal means of TOMS total ozone and NMC temperature are well correlated from year to year, and both are decreasing. Finally, the mid-latitude temperature maximum is found to be radically cooler in 1985 than in either 1979 (a dynamically active year) or in 1980 (a dynamically quiescent year).

Correlations of TOMS total ozone data (Nimbus-7 satellite) with tropopause height

Two correlation studies of Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data with tropopause height from radiosondes performed over Europe showed a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and 0.96. As a result, the rms error in the prediction of tropopause height from total ozone was found to be 20 mb. Correlation between tropopause height and TOMS data was the highest of all the other correlations with variables directly derived from radiosondes or simulated thermal radiances over the location of radiosondes. Comparing the two dimensional fields of TOMS, tropopause height from radiosondes and tropopause height field from TIROS-N retrievals, we can say that the first field is much closer to the true field from radiosondes than the third. The correlation coefficient for a ten-day study between TOMS data and tropopause height from radiosondes is between 0.85 and 0.9 for 30-70N. Tropopause analysis provided by GLA model also shows a very high correlation with TOMS data.

Life prediction of thermomechanical fatigue using total strain version of strainrange partitioning (SRP): A proposal

A method is proposed (without experimental verification) for extending the total strain version of Strainrange Partitioning (TS-SRP) to predict the lives of thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) cycles. The principal feature of TS SRP is the determination of the time-temperature-waveshape dependent elastic strainrange versus life lines that are added subsequently to the classical inelastic strainrange versus life lines to form the total strainrange versus life relations. The procedure is based on a derived relation between failure and flow behavior. Failure behavior is represented by conventional SRP inelastic strainrange versus cyclic life relations, while flow behavior is captured in terms of the cyclic stress-strain response characteristics. Stress-strain response is calculated from simple equations developed from approximations to more complex cyclic constitutive models. For applications to TMF life prediction, a new testing technique, bithermal cycling, is proposed as a means for generating the inelastic strainrange versus life relations. Flow relations for use in predicting TMF lives would normally be obtained from approximations to complex thermomechanical constitutive models. Bithermal flow testing is also proposed as an alternative to thermomechanical flow testing at low strainranges where the hysteresis loop is difficult to analyze.

Global trends in total ozone

Satellite ozone data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer from 1979 through 1986 show that recent decreases of total ozone have not been confined to the Antarctic spring season (the Antarctic ozone hole), but are global in extent. The losses are about twice the estimated uncertainty in the satellite data. The decreases are largest in middle and high latitudes and occur in all seasons of the year. The decreases for this 8-year period are comparable in magnitude to the increases observed during the 1960s. Southern Hemisphere values from 1986 are generally greater than those from 1985.

Comment on 'Further interpretation of satellite measurements of Antarctic total ozone'

It is argued that the best explanation for the 1980-1982 Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data showing a decline in zonal monthly mean total ozone for Octobers between 1979 and 1985/86 for all latitudes south of 40 S (as reported by Stolarski and Schoeberl, 1986) is a near-cancellation between an ozone source and a newly developed chemical sink for ozone, with both initiated by the arrival of spring in the southern hemisphere. In a reply by Schoeberl and Stolarski, additional TOMS observations are reported which suggest that some uncompensated ozone loss may be occurring in the spring Antarctic in the most recent years. A significant change in the midlatitude ozone source appears to have occurred as well. The observations show the importance of the final warming in setting up the summertime ozone distribution.

Intercomparison of solar total irradiance data from recent spacecraft measurements

Earth Radiation Budget Experiment solar total irradiance data obtained by the solar monitors of the NOAA 9 and 10 spacecraft are presently compared with those obtained by the Solar Maximum Mission's Active Cavity Irradiance Monitor 1, as well as sounding rockets and the Nimbus 7 Earth Radiation Budget channel 10C. A disparity is noted among total irradiance values obtained in near-simultaneous measurements with absolute pyrheliometers of similar design and operational modes which (1) indicates the uncertainty associated with currently available instruments, and (2) recommends intercalibration of electrically self-calibrating pyrheliometers from spacecraft.

Total ozone changes in the 1987 Antarctic ozone hole

The development of the Antarctic ozone minimum was observed in 1987 with the Nimbus 7 Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instrument. In the first half of August the near-polar (60 and 70 deg S) ozone levels were similar to those of recent years. By September, however, the ozone at 70 and 80 deg S was clearly lower than any previous year including 1985, the prior record low year. The levels continued to decrease throughout September until October 5 when a new record low of 109 DU was established at a point near the South Pole. This value is 29 DU less than the lowest observed in 1985 and 48 DU less than the 1986 low. The zonal mean total ozone at 60 deg S remained constant throughout the time of ozone hole formation. The ozone decline was punctuated by local minima formed away from the polar night boundary at about 75 deg S. The first of these, on August 15 to 17, formed just east of the Palmer Peninsula and appears to be a mountain wave. The second major minimum formed on September 5 to 7 again downwind of the Palmer Peninsula. This event was larger in scale than the August minimum and initiated the decline of ozone across the polar region. The 1987 ozone hole was nearly circular and pole centered for its entire life. In previous years the hole was perturbed by intrusions of the circumpolar maximum into the polar regions, thus causing the hole to be elliptical. The 1987 hole also remained in place until the end of November, a few days longer than in 1985, and this persistence resulted in the latest time for recovery to normal values yet observed.

Measurements of NO and total reactive odd-nitrogen, NOy, in the Antarctic stratosphere

Measurements of NO and total reactive N, NOy, were made as part of the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment conducted in Punta Arenas, Chile during Aug. and Sept. 1987. The total reactive N reservoir includes the species NO, NO2, NO3, N2 O5, HNO3, and ClONO2. The instrument was located on board the NASA ER2 aircraft which conducted 12 flights over the Antarctic continent reaching altitudes of 18 km at 72 deg S latitude. The NOy technique utilized the conversion of component NOy species to NO on a gold catalyst and the subsequent detection of NO by the chemiluminescence reaction of NO with ozone. Since the inlet sample line is heated and the catalyst operates at 300 C, NOy incorporated in aerosols evaporates and is converted to NO. NO was measured on two separate flights by removing the catalyst from the sample inlet line.

Variations of total ozone in the north polar region as seen by TOMS

Data from the TOMS instrument has been used to follow the course of development of the Antarctic ozone springtime minimum since 1979. Addressed is the question of possible north polar region changes which might be deduced from the nine years of TOMS measurements of total ozone. Total ozone is a much more variable quantity in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. This makes the search for trends more difficult and the interpretation of results more uncertain. The 9-yr time series of TOMS data at high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere is examined. Because the TOMS measurements have drifted by 3 to 4 percent with respect to closely collocated Dobson measurements, it was chosen in this study to adopt the Dobson normalization and adjust the TOMS measurements accordingly. The difference between the last two years (1986 and 1987) of the TOMS record, and the first two years of the record (1979 and 1980) are shown. The difference in percent is given as a function of latitude and time of year. The Antarctic springtime decrease is clearly seen as well as a smaller change which extends to about 50 degrees south latitude at all seasons. Changes in the Northern Hemisphere are less dramatic and are concentrated near the polar night where solar zenith angles are very large. These data are now being examined in more detail and updated results will be presented at the Workshop.

Antarctic ozone decrease: Possible impact on the seasonal and latitudinal distribution of total ozone as simulated by a 2-D model

Satellite borne instruments, the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet spectrometer (SBUV), show that total column ozone has decreased by more than 5 percent in the neighborhood of 60 S at all seasons since 1979. This is considerably larger than the decrease calculated by 2-D models which take into account solar flux variation and increases of trace gas concentrations over the same period. The meteorological conditions (warmer temperature and the apparent lack of polar stratospheric clouds) at these latitudes do not seem to favor heterogeneous chemistry as the direct cause for the observed ozone reduction. A mechanism involving the seasonal transport of ozone-poor air mass from within the polar vortex to lower latitudes (the so-called dilution effect) is proposed as a possible explanation for the observed year-round ozone reduction in regions away from the vortex.

Low frequency oscillations in total ozone measurements

Low frequency oscillations with periods of approximately one to two months are found in eight years of global grids of total ozone data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) satellite instrument. The low frequency oscillations corroborate earlier analyses based on four years of data. In addition, both annual and seasonal one-point correlation maps based on the 8-year TOMS data are presented. The results clearly show a standing dipole in ozone perturbations, oscillating with 35 to 50 day periods over the equatorial Indian Ocean-west Pacific region. This contrasts with the eastward moving dipole reported in other data sets. The standing ozone dipole appears to be a dynamical feature associated with vertical atmospheric motions. Consistent with prior analyses based on lower stratospheric temperature fields, large-scale standing patterns are also found in the extratropics of both hemispheres, correlated with ozone fluctuations over the equatorial west Pacific. In the Northern Hemisphere, a standing pattern is observed extending from the tropical Indian Ocean to the north Pacific, across North America, and down to the equatorial Atlantic Ocean region. This feature is most pronounced in the NH summer.

The use of the articulated total body model as a robot dynamics simulation tool

The Articulated Total Body (ATB) model is a computer sumulation program which was originally developed for the study of aircrew member dynamics during ejection from high-speed aircraft. This model is totally three-dimensional and is based on the rigid body dynamics of coupled systems which use Euler's equations of motion with constraint relations of the type employed in the Lagrange method. In this paper the use of the ATB model as a robot dynamics simulation tool is discussed and various simulations are demonstrated. For this purpose the ATB model has been modified to allow for the application of torques at the joints as functions of state variables of the system. Specifically, the motion of a robotic arm with six revolute articulations with joint torques prescribed as functions of angular displacement and angular velocity are demonstrated. The simulation procedures developed in this work may serve as valuable tools for analyzing robotic mechanisms, dynamic effects, joint load transmissions, feed-back control algorithms employed in the actuator control and end-effector trajectories.

Totally parallel multilevel algorithms

Four totally parallel algorithms for the solution of a sparse linear system have common characteristics which become quite apparent when they are implemented on a highly parallel hypercube such as the CM2. These four algorithms are Parallel Superconvergent Multigrid (PSMG) of Frederickson and McBryan, Robust Multigrid (RMG) of Hackbusch, the FFT based Spectral Algorithm, and Parallel Cyclic Reduction. In fact, all four can be formulated as particular cases of the same totally parallel multilevel algorithm, which are referred to as TPMA. In certain cases the spectral radius of TPMA is zero, and it is recognized to be a direct algorithm. In many other cases the spectral radius, although not zero, is small enough that a single iteration per timestep keeps the local error within the required tolerance.

Windward fraction of the total mass or heat transport for flow past a circular cylinder

The windward fraction of the total mass or heat transport for flow past a cylindrical aerodynamic object was estimated using the available experimental data for the angular distribution of the Nusselt transfer coefficient, Nu(theta, Re). The Re dependence of the windward surface fraction was calculated for the values of Re between 2 and 400,000. The results obtained from polar integrations of data from eight sources indicate that, for Reynolds numbers up to about 2000, more than 70 percent of the total transfer occurs on the windward surface. For the Re values above 100,000, the windward percentage is less than 50 percent.

Improved calculation of total cross section for pair production by relativistic heavy ions

A calculation of the total cross section for direct electron-positron pair production by heavy ions is described. It combines the use of the Weizsaecker-Williams method for low-energy transfers and existing calculations for high-energy transfers. Higher-order corrections to the total cross section are calculated based on the Weizsaecher-Williams method and existing results for pair production by photons.

A simple analytical formula to compute clear sky total and photosynthetically available solar irradiance at the ocean surface

A simple but accurate analytical formula was developed for computing the total and the photosynthetically available solar irradiances at the ocean surface under clear skies, which takes into account the processes of scattering by molecules and aerosols within the atmosphere and of absorption by the water vapor, ozone, and aerosols. These processes are parameterized as a function of solar zenith angle, aerosol type, atmospheric visibility, and vertically integrated water-vapor and ozone amounts. Comparisons of the calculated and measured total and photosynthetically available solar irradiances for several experiments in tropical and mid-latitude ocean regions show 39 and 14 Wm/sq m rms errors (6.5 and 4.7 percent of the average measured values) on an hourly time scale, respectively. The proposed forumula is unique in its ability to predict surface solar irradiance in the photosynthetically active spectral interval.

On the relationship between the phases of 27-day total ozone and solar activity indices in different latitudinal zones

The dynamics of 27 day total ozone variations during and 11 year solar activity cycle at high and low latitudes was analyzed. The calculations were made using a specially worked out program permitting, besides the determination of the amplitudes and phases, the observation of the coherence of phases in any time interval. To characterize solar activity, solar radio-flux at 10.7 cm was used. The results of the calculation of total ozone phases difference and those of the index F(sub 10.7), as well as the amplitudes of the 27 day variations of these parameters are presented.
