Agrivoltaic Decision Tools for Perennial and Field Crop Farmers

This article describes a series of spreadsheet-based tools to help farmers estimate costs, revenues, and yields from agricultural production under different configurations of agrivoltaic installations for field and perennial crops. Crop-specific log books allow farmers to project changes in activity-level costs from the field due to agrivoltaic installations. The whole-farm tool helps farmers aggregate activity-level net returns up to the farm level to calculate projections of trade-offs between crop production with or without agrivoltaic installations. We present tools for lettuce and cranberries, but the tools are comprehensive and inclusive and so can be modified for other perennial and field crops.

Integrating Variable Renewable Energy in Power Systems: Fundamentals for the Greater Mekong Subregion

This presentation is an introduction to foundational concepts for integrating variable renewable energy (VRE) into bulk power systems, with a focus on the Greater Mekong Subregion. It contains fundamentals on challenges and solutions for VRE integration (e.g., wind and solar PV), as well as deep dives on energy storage, floating solar PV (FPV), and cross-border energy trade (CBET). Case studies are contained throughout.

Unlocking the Value of Deep Energy Retrofits

This publication is based on an extensive study conducted on behalf of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the U S Department of Energy (DOE) to explore financial and risk products to accelerate the implementation of deep energy retrofit (DER) solutions to reduce costs These financial products are intended to speed market development via three fundamental themes: reallocating risk from building owners and lenders to insurers, quantifying and monetizing previously unrecognized value associated with DERs, and providing building owners and lenders with confidence in the performance of building systems Findings are based on a comprehensive analysis and characterization of 100+ existing DER case studies, and more than 40 qualitative interviews with industry experts, including insurers, researchers, building owners, and policymakers In addition, a quantitative model of overall project economics with baseline, high, and low cases was developed This data informed the analysis that resulted in three recommended financial product solutions, which were evaluated for their potential to raise projected cash flows and finance DERs: 1) Building System Performance and Energy Savings Guarantee; 2) Trade Credit Insurance; 3) Ancillary Revenue Contracts. This report identifies many value streams associated with DERs and introduces these three potential financial products, which aim to reallocate risks and reduce barriers to the adoption of advanced envelope DERs.

Unveiling 3D Morphology of Multiscale Micro-Nanosilver Sintering for Advanced Electronics Manufacturing by Ptychographic X-ray Nanotomography

The sintering processing–structure–property relationship of a multiscale silver materials is investigated: microparticles with nanofeatures, particularly on their three-dimensional (3D) morphology. The target application is to replace conventional lead-based solders in advanced electronic manufacturing. Unlike lead-based solders, silver powders are suited to satisfy increasingly demanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal requirements, meanwhile being free of health effect. Sintering the material at a low temperature and without applied pressure are desirable conditions, which results in a preferred use of silver nanoparticles, as nanofeatures have higher driving force to sinter with the decrease in particle size. However, nanosized powders present potential health/environmental effects. To address the trade-off between the benefits and shortcomings of nano-versus microparticles, this work studies a novel multiscale silver paste, namely micron-sized powders with nanosized features. To get quantitative 3D visualization of micro- and nanoscale features, ptychographic X-ray computed nanotomography is applied. The correlations between conditions (thermal aging, pressure, and substrate metallization), mechanical properties, and morphological parameters are established. Finally, using novel 3D X-ray nanoimaging technique, it is demonstrated that one can design multiscale materials while balancing complex demands required in advanced electronics manufacturing and research directions in materials design and characterization.

Autonomously Responsive Membranes for Chemical Warfare Protection

Stimuli-responsive materials offer new opportunities to resolve long-standing material challenges and are rapidly gaining pivotal roles in diverse applications. For example, smart protective garments that rapidly transport water vapor and autonomously block chemical threats are expected to enable an effective new paradigm of adaptive personal protection. However, the incorporation of these seemingly incompatible properties into a single responsive system remains elusive. Herein, a bistable membrane that can rapidly, selectively, and reversibly transition from a highly breathable state in a safe environment to a chemically protective state when exposed to organophosphate threats such as sarin is demonstrated. Dynamic response to chemical stimuli is achieved through the physical collapse of an ultrathin copolymer layer on the membrane surface, which efficiently gates transport through membrane pores composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The adoption of nanometer-wide SWNTs for ultrafast moisture conduction enables a simultaneous boost in size-sieving selectivity and water-vapor permeability by decreasing nanotube diameter, thereby overcoming the breathability/protection trade-off that limits conventional membrane materials. Adaptive multifunctional membranes based on this platform greatly extend the active use of a protective garment and present exciting opportunities in many other areas including separation processes, sensing, and smart delivery.

Fibril Network Strategy Enables High‐Performance Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells

Abstract The development of semitransparent organic solar cells (ST‐OSCs) represents a significant step toward the commercialization of OSCs. However, the trade‐off between power conversion efficiency (PCE) and average visible transmittance (AVT) restricts further improvements of ST‐OSCs. Herein, it is demonstrated that a fibril network strategy can enable ST‐OSCs with a high PCE and AVT simultaneously. A wide‐bandgap polymer PBT1‐C‐2Cl that can self‐assemble into a fibril nanostructure is used as the donor and a near‐infrared small molecule Y6 is adopted as the acceptor. It is found that a tiny amount of PBT1‐C‐2Cl in the blend can form a high speed pathway for hole transport due to the well distributed fibril nanostructure, which increases the transmittance in the visible region. Meanwhile, the acceptor Y6 guarantees sufficient light absorption. Using this strategy, the optimized ST‐OSCs yield a high PCE of 9.1% with an AVT of over 40% and significant light utilization efficiency of 3.65% at donor/acceptor ratio of 0.25:1. This work demonstrates a simple and effective approach to realizing high PCE and AVT of ST‐OSCs simultaneously.

A New Family of Proton‐Conducting Electrolytes for Reversible Solid Oxide Cells: BaHf x Ce 0.8− x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ

Abstract Reversible solid oxide cells based on ceramic proton conductors have potential to be the most efficient system for large‐scale energy storage. The performance and long‐term durability of these systems, however, are often limited by the ionic conductivity or stability of the proton‐conducting electrolyte. Here new family of solid oxide electrolytes, BaHf x Ce 0.8− x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (BHCYYb), which demonstrate a superior ionic conductivity to stability trade‐off than the state‐of‐the‐art proton conductors, BaZr x Ce 0.8− x Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (BZCYYb), at similar Zr/Hf concentrations, as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, Raman, and X‐ray diffraction analysis of samples over 500 h of testing are reported. The increase in performance is revealed through thermodynamic arguments and first‐principle calculations. In addition, lab scale full cells are fabricated, demonstrating high peak power densities of 1.1, 1.4, and 1.6 W cm −2 at 600, 650, and 700 °C, respectively. Round‐trip efficiencies for steam electrolysis at 1 A cm −2 are 78%, 72%, and 62% at 700, 650, and 600 °C, respectively. Finally, CO 2 H 2 O electrolysis is carried out for over 700 h with no degradation.

Surface Atomic Rearrangement with High Cation Ordering for Ultra-Stable Single-Crystal Ni-Rich Co-Less Cathode Materials

It is crucial to minimize cobalt content in Ni-rich layered single-crystal cathodes due to their high price and limited availability, yet it will inevitably lead to cation disordering, capacity degradation, and thermal issues. Herein, to overcome the intrinsic trade-off between performance and composition of Ni-rich Co-less single-crystal cathodes, a precursor engineering strategy with an epitaxially grown cobalt enrichment on the surface is innovatively proposed. In contrast to traditional coating modifications with random orientation and rigid surface-bulk boundary, the epitaxially enriched surface cobalt layer on the precursor undergoes rapid interdiffusion with the internal Ni 3+ during the optimized sintering process. This interdiffusion eliminates the surface-bulk boundary, promoting the uniform distribution of cobalt and synergistically addressing the Li/Ni intermixing. Moreover, an enhanced surface Li + diffusion is obtained, thereby suppressing the Li + concentration gradient and intragranular cracks generation. Consequently, the modified LiNi 0.7 Co 0.07 Mn 0.23 O 2 exhibits impressive cycling stability with increased capacity retention in both coin-type half-cells and pouch-type full-cells (91% after 1000 cycles), even under the harsh condition of high-temperature, surpassing the majority of previously reported Ni-rich cathodes. Finally, this work opens new avenues toward the low cost, high energy density, thermal stability, and long cyclic life for Ni-rich Co-less cathodes and sheds light on large-scale commercial production.

Self‐Assembled Membranes for High Ion Selectivity and Proton Blocking in Electrochemical Applications

Anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) with high anion/cation selectivity and exceptional proton-blocking ability are critical for applications such as bipolar membrane electrodialysis and electrochemical acid recovery. However, existing AEMs are constrained by a trade-off between ionic conductivity and selectivity, largely due to the intrinsic coupling between charge density and water content, and they suffer from excessive proton leakage facilitated by the Grotthuss hopping mechanism. In this work, poly(vinylimidazolium) membranes functionalized with long alkyl side chains that self-assemble into well-defined microphase-separated morphologies stabilized by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions are reported. These unique structures localize the charge density along the polymer backbone to promote fast and selective ion transport. As a result, these membranes exhibit ionic conductivities and counter-ion diffusivities surpassing those of conventional homogeneous membranes, along with unprecedented counter-ion/co-ion selectivity and proton-blocking ability. These results establish a new design paradigm for high-performance, phase separated charged polymer membranes that overcome the limitations of homogeneous membranes, with broad implications for advanced electrochemical technologies.

Perovskite-Type Solid Solution Nano-Electrocatalysts Enable Simultaneously Enhanced Activity and Stability for Oxygen Evolution

A trade-off between catalytic activity and structural stability generally exists in oxygen evolution electrocatalysis, especially in acidic environment. This dilemma limits the development of higher-performance electrocatalysts that are required by next-generation electrochemical technologies. In this work it is demonstrated that the inverse catalytic activity–structural stability relation can be broken by alloying catalytically inert strontium zirconate with the other catalytically active perovskite, strontium iridate. This strategy results in an alloyed perovskite electrocatalyst with simultaneously improved iridium mass activity and structural stability, by about five times, for the oxygen evolution reaction under acidic conditions. The experimental and theoretical results suggest that the alloying strategy generates multiple positive effects, mainly including the reduction of catalyst size, the decrease of catalyst covalency, and the weakening of surface oxygen-binding ability. The synergistic optimization of bulk and surface properties, as a result, enhances the intrinsic activity and availability of surface iridium sites, whilst significantly inhibiting the surface cation corrosion during electrocatalysis.

Performance Limits of an Alternating Current Electroluminescent Device

Abstract The use of an alternating current (AC) voltage is a simple, versatile method of producing electroluminescence from generic emissive materials without the need for contact engineering. Recently, it was shown that AC‐driven, capacitive electroluminescent devices with carbon nanotube network contacts can be used to generate and study electroluminescence from a variety of molecular materials emitting in the infrared‐to‐ultraviolet range. Here, performance trade‐offs in these devices are studied through comprehensive device simulations and illustrative experiments, enhancing understanding of the mechanism and capability of electroluminescent devices based on alternating as opposed to direct current (DC) schemes. AC‐driven electroluminescent devices can overcome several limitations of conventional DC‐driven electroluminescent devices, including the requirement for proper alignment of material energy levels and the need to process emitting materials into uniform thin films. By simultaneously optimizing device geometry, driving parameters, and material characteristics, the performance of these devices can be tuned. Importantly, the turn‐on voltage of AC‐driven electroluminescent devices approaches the bandgap of the emitting material as the gate oxide thickness is scaled, and internally efficient electroluminescence can be achieved using low‐mobility single‐layer emitter films with varying thicknesses and energy barrier heights relative to the contact.

Operando Tailoring of Defects and Strains in Corrugated β-Ni(OH) 2 Nanosheets for Stable and High-Rate Energy Storage

Nickel hydroxide represents a technologically important material for energy storage, such as hybrid supercapacitors. It has two different crystallographic polymorphs, α- and β-Ni(OH) 2 , showing advantages in either theoretical capacity or cycling/rate performance, manifesting a trade-off trend that needs to be optimized for practical applications. In this work, the synergistic superiorities in both activity and stability of corrugated β-Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets are demonstrated through an electrochemical abuse approach. With ≈91% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles, the corrugated β-Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets can deliver a gravimetric capacity of 457 C g -1 at a high current density of 30 A g -1 , which is nearly two and four times that of the regular α- and β-Ni(OH) 2 , respectively. Operando spectroscopy and finite element analysis reveal that greatly enhanced chemical activity and structural robustness can be attributed to the in situ tailored lattice defects and the strain-induced highly curved micromorphology. This work demonstrates a multi-scale defect-and-strain co-design strategy, which is helpful for rational design and tuned fabrication of next-generation electrode materials for stable and high-rate energy storage.

Direct Chemical Vapor Deposition Synthesis of Porous Single-Layer Graphene Membranes with High Gas Permeances and Selectivities

Single-layer graphene containing molecular-sized in-plane pores is regarded as a promising membrane material for high-performance gas separations due to its atomic thickness and low gas transport resistance. However, typical etching-based pore generation methods cannot decouple pore nucleation and pore growth, resulting in a trade-off between high areal pore density and high selectivity. In contrast, intrinsic pores in graphene formed during chemical vapor deposition are not created by etching. Therefore, intrinsically porous graphene can exhibit high pore density while maintaining its gas selectivity. Here in this work, the density of intrinsic graphene pores is systematically controlled for the first time, while appropriate pore sizes for gas sieving are precisely maintained. As a result, single-layer graphene membranes with the highest H 2 /CH 4 separation performances recorded to date (H 2 permeance > 4000 GPU and H 2 /CH 4 selectivity > 2000) are fabricated by manipulating growth temperature, precursor concentration, and non-covalent decoration of the graphene surface. Moreover, it is identified that nanoscale molecular fouling of the graphene surface during gas separation where graphene pores are partially blocked by hydrocarbon contaminants under experimental conditions, controls both selectivity and temperature dependent permeance. Overall, the direct synthesis of porous single-layer graphene exploits its tremendous potential as high-performance gas-sieving membranes.

Enhancing the Conductivity and Thermoelectric Performance of Semicrystalline Conducting Polymers through Controlled Tie Chain Incorporation

Abstract Conjugated polymers are promising materials for thermoelectric applications, however, at present few effective and well‐understood strategies exist to further advance their thermoelectric performance. Here a new model system is reported for a better understanding of the key factors governing their thermoelectric properties: aligned, ribbon‐phase poly[2,5‐bis(3‐dodecylthiophen‐2‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene] (PBTTT) doped by ion‐exchange doping. Using a range of microstructural and spectroscopic methods, the effect of controlled incorporation of tie‐chains between the crystalline domains is studied through blending of high and low molecular weight chains. The tie chains provide efficient transport pathways between crystalline domains and lead to significantly enhanced electrical conductivity of 4810 S cm −1 , which is not accompanied by a reduction in Seebeck coefficient or a large increase in thermal conductivity. Respectable power factors of 173 µW m −1 K −2 are demonstrated in this model system. The approach is generally applicable to a wide range of semicrystalline conjugated polymers and could provide an effective pathway for further enhancing their thermoelectric properties and overcome traditional trade‐offs in optimization of thermoelectric performance.

AI‐Driven Defect Engineering for Advanced Thermoelectric Materials

Thermoelectric materials offer a promising pathway to directly convert waste heat to electricity. However, achieving high performance remains challenging due to intrinsic trade-offs between electrical conductivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity, which are further complicated by the presence of defects. This review explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are transforming thermoelectric materials design. Advanced ML approaches including deep neural networks, graph-based models, and transformer architectures, integrated with high-throughput simulations and growing databases, effectively capture structure-property relationships in a complex multiscale defect space and overcome the “curse of dimensionality”. This review discusses AI-enhanced defect engineering strategies such as composition optimization, entropy and dislocation engineering, and grain boundary design, along with emerging inverse design techniques for generating materials with targeted properties. Finally, it outlines future opportunities in novel physics mechanisms and sustainability, highlighting the critical role of AI in accelerating the discovery of thermoelectric materials.

From Molecules to Modules: Advanced Characterization of Membrane Systems

Membrane technologies can enhance the efficiency and selectivity of chemical separations in energy-water systems. Advanced characterization tools are critical for discerning separation mechanisms, revealing degradation processes, and designing novel materials and material systems for new and emerging challenges. The pursuit of next-generation membranes for water and energy applications requires understanding phenomena at the molecular scale, mesoscale, and macroscale. This perspective highlights advanced characterization techniques for elucidating and enhancing membrane performance, while addressing fundamental trade-offs involved in characterizing membranes under realistic conditions.

Nanoscale Compositional and Strain Gradients Enable High‐Speed and Amplitude‐Resolved Pyroelectric Sensing

The frequency response of pyroelectric sensors is fundamentally governed by thermal time constant (τth, determined by thermal mass and thermal conductance) and electrical impedance arising from film capacitance and readout circuit. Conventional bulk LiTaO3 detectors are optimized for high responsivity at low modulation frequencies (0.1-10 Hz), possessing a large τth that thermally averages rapid temperature oscillations at elevated modulation frequencies, limiting fidelity in resolving dynamic varying thermal signals. Here, compositional and strain gradients are introduced into 100-nm-thick relaxor-ferroelectric films reducing τth to ≈2 µs and producing built-in potentials (≈1.45 V or 145 kV cm-1) that enhance the pyroelectric coefficient and suppress the dielectric constant. This enables complementary dual-mode operation by enhancing current-mode electrical responsivity and improving the voltage-mode figure of merit - advantageous for superior temperature resolution (ΔTmin ≈ 30 µK). The responsivity peak shifts to near 1 kHz (>2500-times higher than conventional bulk sensors), with measurable responsivity extending to a carrier frequency of 100 kHz and amplitude-resolved detection at modulation frequencies up to 15 kHz. These results establish nanoscale internal-field engineering can reshape electro-thermal trade-off in pyroelectric thin films toward zero-bias, high-thermal-sensitivity, and amplitude-resolved thermal sensing across a wide frequency bandwidth.

Unlocking Larger Scales and Aspect Ratios in 3D Printed Glass: Coupling Active Mixing and UV Curing for Advanced Printability and Crack Resistance

Recent developments in additive manufacturing (AM) of glass via silica-filled inks have facilitated fabrication of previously unattainable geometries and compositions. However, the maximum processable size of 15 mm limits the use of these prints in applications such as optics. A key limitation lies in the trade-off between material printability and green strength: increasing silica content in the feedstock improves crack resistance and reduces shrinkage but results in dramatic changes in viscoelastic properties that hinder flowability. Here, this paper presents a novel approach that offers expanded versatility in processable size, feedstock formulation, and printing. Described here is a direct ink writing (DIW) system coupled with an active high-shear micromixer and UV light source, capable of simultaneously printing multiple inks with a wide range of rheological properties. Choice of silica sourc, solvent, UV-curable binder, and dispersant is used to tune the ink rheology and improve printability and mechanical properties. Imparting high shear with the micromixer while UV-curing the extrudate allows for increased ink viscosities and reduced nozzle diameters, enabling printing finer feature sizes. With these advances, thin-walled high-aspect ratio structures and a crack-free glass disk measuring 44 mm in diameter are demonstrated, an increase of 3× in the greatest dimension compared to current state-of-the-art.
