Rare Higgs Processes at CMS and Precision Timing Detector Studies for HL-LHC CMS Upgrade

This thesis describes the search for two rare Higgs processes. The first analysis describes the CMS Run 2 search for $H$ $\rightarrow$ $\mu$$\mu$ decays, with 137.3 fb$^{-1}$ of data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The analysis targeted four different Higgs production modes: the gluon fusion (ggH), the vector boson fusion (VBF), the Higgs-strahlung process (VH), and the production in association with a pair of top quarks (ttH). Each category used a dedicated machine learning based classifier to separate the signal from the background processes. A combined fit from all these categories saw a slight excess in the data corresponding to 3.0 standard deviations at $M$$_{H}$ = 125.38 GeV, and gave the first evidence for the Higgs boson decay to second-generation fermions. The best-fit signal strength and the corresponding 68% CL interval was found to be +0.17?????? = 1.19 $_{-0.39}^{+0.41}$ (stat)$_{-0.16}^{+0.17}$(syst) at $M$$_{H}$ = 125.38 GeV. The second analysis describes the CMS Run 2 search for 𝐻𝐻 → 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 with highly boosted Higgs bosons. This analysis used a dedicated jet identification algorithm based on graph neural networks (ParticleNet) to identify boosted H→ bb jets. This search targeted the gluon fusion and the vector boson fusion HH production modes, and put constraints on the allowed values of the various Higgs couplings as: 𝜅𝜆 ∈ [−9.9, 16.9] when 𝜅𝑉 = 1, 𝜅2𝑉 = 1; 𝜅𝑉 ∈ [−1.17, −0.79] ∪ [0.81, 1.18] when 𝜅𝜆 = 1, 𝜅2𝑉 = 1; 𝜅2𝑉 ∈ [0.62, 1.41] when 𝜅𝜆 = 1, 𝜅𝑉 = 1. A scenario with 𝜅2𝑉 = 0 was excluded with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations for the first time, when other H couplings are fixed to their SM values. The combined observed (expected) 95% upper limit on the HH production cross section was found to be 9.9 (5.1) × SM. Finally, this thesis also discusses the planned MIP Timing Detector (MTD) upgrade for CMS at the HL-LHC. The MTD will be a time-of-flight (TOF) detector, designed to provide a precision timing information for charged particles using SiPMs + LYSO scintillating crystals, with a time resolution of ∼30 ps. This thesis describes several R&D tests that have been performed for characterizing the sensor properties (time resolution, light yield, etc.) and optimizing the sensor design geometry. This thesis also contains a description of mock test setups for cooling the sensors, since it is known to be an effective way of mitigating the increased dark current rates in the sensors due to radiation damage.

Separation, recovery and upgrading of biomass derived 2,3-butanediol

The invention relates to a two-way approach to isolate, recover and upgrade 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) from fermentation broth. A complete separation and recovery process for 2,3-BDO using acetalization and trans-acetalization sequence. Acetalization with butyraldehyde using heterogeneous catalysts, either Amberlyst-15® or Nafion NR50®, efficiently isolates 2,3-BDO as phase-separated protected dioxolane. The approach provides significant process advantages with easy product recovery and high recyclability of the catalyst. Trans-acetalization of dioxolane with methanol (methanolysis) followed by distillation of acetal, yielded very high purity 2,3-BDO with about 90% isolated yield. Alternatively, dioxolane is used in a process direct to methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as a BDO synthon allowing for recovery of the aldehyde.

Electrons to Molecules by Engineering and Evolution: Biological Upgrading of Formate by Cupriavidus necator

Waste carbon from industrial point sources can be captured, stored, and/or transformed using electrochemical conversion or "electrons to molecules" technologies using low-cost renewable electricity. One such process involves electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to generate formate/formic acid, a C1 carboxylic acid. Formate is a promising potential feedstock for microbial upgrading, as it is water soluble and can be consumed as the sole source of carbon and energy by some microbial species, such as the soil bacterium Cupriavidus necator. Here we will present progress toward improving C. necator as a host for biological conversion of formate to value-added products. Using the power of adaptive laboratory evolution, we were able to isolate mutants of C. necator with significantly faster growth rates on formate. We then sequenced the genomes of these strains, elucidated the metabolic role of the mutations we found, and then used these insights to build rationally engineered strains that outperform even the best evolved isolates. These results highlight the utility of "genome streamlining" as a route for generating platform strains with potential industrial applications.

Distributed Energy Resource-Cognizant Upgrade Paths to the Traditional Restoration Strategy of Utilities for Improved Load Restoration: Preprint

Climate change has resulted in increasingly impactful and more frequent occurrences of extreme weather events. This trend poses a significant challenge for distribution utilities and system operators to ensure that there is uninterrupted power supply to critical loads in their networks under fault scenarios; however, currently, utilities deploying the automated fault location, isolation and restoration (FLISR) function in their advanced distribution management system (ADMS) do not take into account the available generation and load-modification capabilities of distributed energy resources present in the disconnected network due to an upstream isolated fault. This results in the network reconfiguration and restoration to result in sub-optimal load restoration. Therefore, this paper presents two approaches that can upgrade the existing FLISR capabilities of distribution utilities to significantly increase the restoration of critical loads. The performance of the proposed approaches is evaluated on a numerical model of a real distribution feeder in Georgia, USA.

Operations and Recent Upgrades to a Tritium Recycling Facility - 20375

Nuclear Sources and Services Inc. (NSSI) is a waste handling treatment company that has been operating since 1971. In 2000, NSSI began building a 1,000 m{sup 2} (∼10,000 sqft) tritium recycling facility on the Houston, Texas premises to address a growing need in the waste disposal market. Over the years, the capability of the facility grew to address many different waste streams with the goal of recycling > 99.9% of all tritium activity back into the fusion community. This is achieved by maintaining an effluent stack release well below the 150 GBq/year (C Ci/year) operating limit and maintaining all liquid and solid waste disposal below the low-level radioactive release limit of 0.C MBq/kg (10 μCi/kg). The unique processing systems in the facility attracts many challenging contracts. Within the past two years, NSSI has engaged with customers to treat; organic mixed wastes that simultaneously contain tritium and carbon-14, safely extract tritium from large quantities of exit sign lights, and remove tritium from uncharacterised legacy depleted uranium beds from a superfund site. This paper will outline the initial testing, the system upgrades to treat these varied streams, and the progress in processing the feedstocks provided by these projects. (authors)

Electrospinner Upgrades for Nanofiber Production

Electrospinning is an inexpensive and flexible method for producing nanofibers. Nanofibers are highly adaptable with potential applications in accelerator target systems, air and water filtration, and biomedicine. This project aims to upgrade and test an existing roll-to-roll electrospinner that is more economical for industrial nanofiber production. Varying the diameter of nanofiber can change its functional properties. The current unit cannot adjust spinneret-collector separation, which determines nanofiber diameter. The electro-spinneret channel also does not have lateral adjustment capabilities for precise alignment. Lastly, the viscosities of our polymer solutions have not been quantified. Solution injection into the channel is presently inconsistent because of imperfect nozzle sizing, resulting in waste and decreased efficiency. Modeling was done with Siemens NX CAD software, and viscosity was measured using a Brookfield DVE-LV viscometer. A dual scissor lift design for channel displacement, powered by a dual-shaft DC motor coupled to precision lead screws, was approved and construction was started. Preliminary channel modifications also were initiated. Going forward, the scissor lift system will be integrated and evaluated with our electrospinner, along with further channel modifications. Viscosity measurements of polyvinyldimethylformamide (PVDF) were recorded with inconsistent results due to inadequate testing conditions. Future viscosity trials must be completed in accordance with testing requirements. The optimization and commercialization of roll-to-roll electrospinner units can make nanofiber production more feasible for many new industries and consumer products.

Control System Upgrade for Battery State-of-Charge Indications

The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Complex at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) relies on Battery Backed Power (BBP) systems and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to ensure continuous power supply to critical components. This project aims to enhance the reliability and functionality of the battery monitoring and control systems by updating the State-of-Charge (SOC) system, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for the nuclear safety-related battery banks. The current system, while functional, has areas for improvement, particularly in recharging calculations and alarm functions. The project objectives include developing flow charts, programming the new PLC and HMI, conducting bench tests, and updating design documentation. Additionally, the project ensures compliance with safety standards, develops training materials, creates comprehensive documentation, and integrates seamlessly with existing ATR infrastructure. The new SOC system is designed to be scalable for future upgrades, improve efficiency, enhance data accuracy, implement redundancy features, and achieve project goals within budget constraints while considering environmental impact. The methodology involved familiarizing with BBP and UPS systems, collecting current readings, rescaling signals, learning ladder logic, and updating the HMI. The transition from SLC 5/03 PLC using RS Logix 500 to CompactLogix 5380 using Studio 5000 was a key step. Despite challenges in transferring outdated PLC ladder logic and HMI code, starting from scratch led to a more accurate and efficient monitoring system, contributing to improved safety and operational efficiency. The project is currently awaiting approval of the Engineering Calculation and Analysis Report (ECAR) before implementation.

A Comparative Study of Ethanol Upgrading to Butadiene Over Rare Earth Elements Incorporated in Dealuminated Beta Zeolites

Copper and rare earth element-containing dealuminated Beta zeolites (CuREE/deAlBeta) are promising catalysts for the conversion of ethanol to C 3+ olefins en route to sustainable aviation fuel. Product selectivities over CuREE/deAlBeta depend on the identity of the REE. Here, in this study, a suite of La/deAlBeta catalysts of varied La loading are prepared, and their reactivities, selectivities, and apparent C-C coupling kinetics in the cascade reaction between ethanol and acetaldehyde are reported. Ex situ and in situ titrations to quantify Lewis acidic La sites quantify distinct numbers of sites, suggesting a distribution of site types. Across a series of REE/deAlBeta catalysts (REE = Y, La, Lu, Yb, Gd), the selectivity to secondary products correlates with the pyridine heats of adsorption at REE Lewis acid sites. The turnover frequency (per Lewis acid site) for C–C coupling was similar across the series of REE/deAlBeta catalysts. Y/deAlBeta and La/deAlBeta, which have the most disparate secondary product selectivities, had similar kinetics for C–C coupling. These findings demonstrate the complexity of quantifying active sites in REE/deAlBeta zeolites, and the sensitivity of the selectivity, but not the reactivity for C–C coupling, to the identity of the REE atom in REE/deAlBeta zeolites.
