The NASA Aerospace Flight Battery Systems Program task status is reviewed. Major tasks incorporated in the program are battery systems, secondary batteries, and primary batteries.
High capacity nonaqueous secondary battery development - lithium deposition and cycling, ionic solvation, cathode construction and discharge efficiency, and solvent purification
In recent years following several spacecraft battery anomalies, it was determined that managing the operational factors of NASA flight NiCd rechargeable battery was very important in order to maintain space flight battery nominal performance. The optimization of existing flight battery operational performance was viewed as something new for a Taguchi Methods application.
Zinc-silver oxide battery design for improved and activated charge retention, voltage control, and temperature stability
Development and testing of vivyl polymer separator materials for sterilized silver-zinc secondary battery
Design of silver oxide-zinc battery of limited cycle life with no degradation in discharge voltage characteristics
A circuit for charging a battery combined with a capacitor includes a power supply adapted to be connected to the capacitor, and the battery. The circuit includes an electronic switch connected to the power supply. The electronic switch is responsive to switch between a conducting state to allow current and a non-conducting state to prevent current flow. The circuit includes a control device connected to the switch and is operable to generate a control signal to continuously switch the electronic switch between the conducting and non-conducting states to charge the battery.
High energy anode and cathode development, electrolyte encapsulation, tape activation, and parasitic operation techniques for dry tape battery concept
High energy anode and cathode for dry tape battery - incapsulation of electrolyte - manufacturing and testing of device
This NASA Aerospace Flight Battery Systems Working Group was chartered within the NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC). The Battery Working Group was tasked to complete tasks and to propose proactive work to address battery related, agency-wide issues on an annual basis. In its first year of operation, this proactive program addressed various aspects of the validation and verification of aerospace battery systems for NASA missions. Studies were performed, issues were discussed and in many cases, test programs were executed to generate recommendations and guidelines to reduce risk associated with various aspects of implementing battery technology in the aerospace industry. This document contains Part 2 - Volume I: Recommendations for Technical Requirements for Inclusion in Aerospace Battery Procurements of the program's operations.
