Waveguide Photonic Choke Joint with Wide Out-of-Band Rejection

A photonic choke joint structure with a wide-stop-band is proposed for use as a waveguide flange interface. The structure consists of arrays of square metal pillars arranged in a periodic pattern to suppress the dominant-mode wave propagation in parallel-plate waveguide over a wide frequency bandwidth. The measurement results at microwave frequencies confirm that the structure can provide broadband suppression of more than 56dB over 6.25 times its operating frequency. Applications at millimeter wavelength are discussed.

Waveguide Multimode Directional Coupler for Harvesting Harmonic Power from the Output of Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifiers

This paper presents the design, fabrication, and test results for a novel waveguide multimode directional coupler (MDC). The coupler fabricated from dissimilar frequency band waveguides, is capable of isolating power at the 2nd harmonic frequency from the fundamental power at the output port of traveling-wave tube amplifiers. Test results from proof-of-concept demonstrations are presented for Ku/Ka-band and Ka/E-band MDCs, which demonstrate sufficient power in the 2nd harmonic for a space borne beacon source for mm-wave atmospheric propagation studies.

High Efficiency Quantum Well Waveguide Solar Cells and Methods for Constructing the Same

Photon absorption, and thus current generation, is hindered in conventional thin-film solar cell designs, including quantum well structures, by the limited path length of incident light passing vertically through the device. Optical scattering into lateral waveguide structures provides a physical mechanism to increase photocurrent generation through in-plane light trapping. However, the insertion of wells of high refractive index material with lower energy gap into the device structure often results in lower voltage operation, and hence lower photovoltaic power conversion efficiency. The voltage output of an InGaAs quantum well waveguide photovoltaic device can be increased by employing a III-V material structure with an extended wide band gap emitter heterojunction. Analysis of the light IV characteristics reveals that non-radiative recombination components of the underlying dark diode current have been reduced, exposing the limiting radiative recombination component and providing a pathway for realizing solar-electric conversion efficiency of 30% or more in single junction cells.

A Dichroic Plate with Rounded Corners for NASA’s 34m Beam Waveguide Antenna

A S/K-band frequency selective surface (FSS) or a dichroic plate is designed, manufactured and tested for use in NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) 34m beam waveguide (BWG) antennas. Due to its large size, the proposed dichroic incorporates a new design feature, waveguides with rounded corners to cut cost and allow ease of manufacturing the plate. The dichroic is designed using an analysis that combines the Finite Element Method (FEM) for arbitrarily shaped guides with the Method of Moments and Floquet mode theory for periodic structures. The software was verified by comparison with previously measured and computed dichroic plates. The large plate was manufactured with end-mill machining. Their RF performance was measured and is in excellent agreement with the analytical results. The dichroic has been successfully installed and in operational at three NASA Deep Space Stations.

RF AND THERMO-MECHANICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN DESIGNING THE WAVEGUIDE IRIS COUPLER FOR THE DRIFT TUBE LINAC IN THE ORNL SPALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) employs tapered ridge waveguide iris couplers to power six drift tube linac (DTL) cavity structures with pulsed RF systems using 2.5MW klystrons at 402.5MHz. All DTL iris couplers have been operating continuously for more than a decade without replacement. Transferring high RF energy to the cavities requires robust RF and mechanical performances with the power dissipation, electrical breakdown and vacuum pressure. Considering the upcoming full 1.4MW operation and the future proton power upgrade (PPU) project, the structural design and the material selection needed to be reviewed for potential spare manufacturing. The existing design and the modified design with improvements of the coupler have been numerically studied. For the study, 3D models were used for RF and structural characterizations of the waveguide iris couplers on the DTL cavity. RF and thermo-mechanical co-simulations were performed to assess the effects of using the different materials and the structural modification.

Waveguide design for line selection in fiber lasers and amplifiers

Rare earth doped fiber lasers can be robust and efficient sources of high quality light, but are usually limited to the highest gain transitions of the active species. But rare earths typically possess a multitude of potentially useful transitions that might be accessed if the dominant transition can be suppressed. In fiber lasers this suppression is complicated by the very high net gain the dominant transitions exhibit; effective suppression requires some mechanism distributed along the length of the fiber. We have developed a novel waveguide with resonant leakage elements that frustrate guidance at well-defined and selectable wavelengths. Based on this waveguide, we have fabricated a Large Mode Area Neodymium doped fiber with suppression of the four-level transition around 1060 nm, and demonstrated lasing on the three-level transition at 930 nm with good efficiency.

Digital fabrication of a small diameter polymer optical waveguide

A novel polymer optical waveguide and method of manufacturing is presented herein. A digitally manufactured process is described which utilizes a micro-dispensed UV optical adhesive as the contour guiding cladding, a fused deposition modeling technology for creating a core, and a subtractive laser process to finish the two ends of the optical interconnect. The optical waveguide can be printed directly on a circuit board in some embodiments. Alternatively, using a slightly modified process including a step to bond the optical fiber to the substrate, the optical interconnect can be manufactured on a flexible substrate.

Mock-up Waveguide Loop Development toward a half-meter scale Traveling-Wave (TW) SRF cavity

Traveling-Wave (TW) technology can push the accelera-tor field gradient of niobium SRF cavity to 70MV/m or higher beyond the fundamental limit of 50~60MV/m in Standing-Wave regime. The success of TW resonance excitation in a proof-of-principle 3-cell SRF cavity in 2K liquid helium encouraged to advance TW technologies necessary more for future accelerator-scale one. Fermilab has proposed a preliminary RF design of a half-meter scale TW cavity by considering the physical dimensions of existing SRF facilities and the lessons learned from the 3-cell. It consists of a 7-cell structure and a power feed-back waveguide (WG) loop with new TW excitation and control schemes such as, double directional coupler and two WG tuners. Mock-up waveguide loop development was launched under Fermilab LDRD program to demon-strate those new RF schemes at a room temperature. Fab-rication drawings of a mock-up loop were completed. Here details and plans of the development are reported.

Fiber-Coupled Substrate-Integrated Hollow Waveguides: An Innovative Approach to Mid-infrared Remote Gas Sensors

Here, in this study, an innovative approach based on fiberoptically coupled substrate-integrated hollow waveguide (iHWG) gas cells for the analysis of low sample volumes suitable for remote broad- and narrow-band mid-infrared (MIR; 2.5–20 μm) sensing applications is reported. The feasibility of remotely addressing iHWG gas cells, configured in a double-pass geometry via a reflector, by direct coupling to a 7-around-1 mid-infrared fiber bundle is demonstrated, facilitating low-level hydrocarbon gas analysis. For comparison studies, two iHWGs with substrate dimensions of 50 × 50 × 12 mm (L × W × H) and geometric channel lengths of 138 and 58.5 mm, serving as miniature light-guiding gas cells, were fiber-coupled to a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer enabling broadband MIR sensing. In addition to the fundamental feasibility of this concept, the achievable sensitivity toward several gaseous hydrocarbons and the reproducibility of assembling the fiber-iHWG interface were investigated.

Superconducting Coplanar Waveguide Resonators Capable of Cofabrication with Josephson Junctions

Superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators and Josephson junctions are crucial components of superconducting quantum information processing chips. Resonators are usually fabricated through lift-off or etching, while Josephson junctions are made by trilayer process or double-angle evaporation. To simplify the fabrication process, we propose a scheme that uses the same process steps for both Josephson junctions and resonators. Simulations and experiments are conducted to confirm that resonators fabricated via the proposed process have quality factor comparable to those via traditional process. This work paves the way for quantum information processing on superconducting large-scale integrated circuits.

Lifshits Tails for Randomly Twisted Quantum Waveguides

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian H{sub γ} on a 3D twisted waveguide with random Anderson-type twisting γ. We introduce the integrated density of states N{sub γ} for the operator H{sub γ}, and investigate the Lifshits tails of N{sub γ}, i.e. the asymptotic behavior of N{sub γ}(E) as E↓infsupp dN{sub γ}. In particular, we study the dependence of the Lifshits exponent on the decay rate of the single-site twisting at infinity.

Surface coupling of plasma optical emission spectra with bent metal-clad waveguide

We present the design of compact bent metal-clad waveguides to collect the vertically emitted light and to transmit to the horizontal direction. The intention of the design is to collect the plasma optical emission spectra inside the semiconductor etch process chamber to monitor plasma gas phase chemistry resides in the process chamber. Coupler A has been designed for visible spectra range from 748 to 753 nm at which the maximum coupling efficiency is over 52%, while Coupler B operates at the wavelength range from 775 to 780 nm with coupling strength of 62% and Coupler C covers the visible spectrum from 808 to 813 nm with its maximum efficiency of 60%. The surface couplers reveal good spectral characteristics, considerable alignment tolerance and minimal size of 9 × 5 × 1.6 µm{sup 3} each. Relatively simple geometrical structure over conventional grating coupler is advantageous to lower the fabrication cost as well.

Digital signal processing in coupled photonic crystal waveguides and its application to an all-optical AND logic gate

The realization of all-optical AND logic gates for pulsed signal operation based on the photonic bandgap transmission phenomenon is proposed. We are using realistic planar air-hole type coupled photonic crystal waveguides (C-PCWs) with Kerr-type nonlinear background medium. The novelty of our analysis is that the proposed AND logic gate operates with the temporal solitons, which maintain a stable envelope propagating in the nonlinear C-PCWs, enabling true ultrafast full-optical digital signal processing in the time-domain. The bandgap transmission takes place when the operating frequency is chosen at the very edge of the dispersion curve of one of the supermodes in the C-PCWs. In this regard, our original fast and accurate method is used to efficiently calculate the supermodes of the C-PCW system. The underlying semi-analytical full-wave modal analysis is based on the evaluation of the lattice sums for complex wavenumbers using the transition-matrix method in combination with the generalized reflection-matrix approach. As a proof of concept successful pulse operation of the all-optical AND logic gate is demonstrated in the framework of extensive full-wave finite-difference time-domain electromagnetics analysis.
