Ordered nanoscale domains by infiltration of block copolymers

A method of preparing tunable inorganic patterned nanofeatures by infiltration of a block copolymer scaffold having a plurality of self-assembled periodic polymer microdomains. The method may be used sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), related to atomic layer deposition (ALD). The method includes selecting a metal precursor that is configured to selectively react with the copolymer unit defining the microdomain but is substantially non-reactive with another polymer unit of the copolymer. A tunable inorganic features is selectively formed on the microdomain to form a hybrid organic/inorganic composite material of the metal precursor and a co-reactant. The organic component may be optionally removed to obtain an inorganic feature s with patterned nanostructures defined by the configuration of the microdomain.

Control of power converters having integrated capacitor blocked transistor cells

Various examples of power converters including Integrated Capacitor Blocked Transistor (ICBT) cells and methods of control of power converters having ICBT cells are described. In one example, a power converter includes an upper arm including a plurality of upper ICBT cells connected in series to form a series connection path and a lower arm including a plurality of lower ICBT cells connected in series in the series connection path. A controller can be configured to provide a control signal pair to each of the upper ICBT cells and a complementary control signal pair to each of the lower ICBT cells to control the converter output. A capacitor voltage controller can be configured to balance a voltage potential among ICBT capacitors in at least one of the upper arm and the lower arm.

Stripline Block Sensor System

he Long Baseline Neutrino Facility requires remote handling of the stripline block, the component responsible for providing current to the focusing horns. There are many constraints due to the surroundings the modules reside in such as small clearances as well as a highly radioactive environment. Existing systems have already been implemented within the process; however, these systems offer limited information leaving much risk during operations. This calls for a sensor system that is sufficiently accurate, complies with project constraints, and provides valuable information throughout the replacement period. A proposed solution utilizes a three dimensional indoor positioning system to provide the operator with real-time positioning and rotational information. Future work would consist of finding vendors capable of providing technology that fits our constraints, proof of concept tests, implementation planning, as well as trails within the target hall itself. A three dimensional indoor positioning system would provide an incredibly diverse tool capable of being utilized in a variety of situations.

Learning Topological Operations on Meshes with Application to Block Decomposition of Polygons

We present a learning based framework for mesh quality improvement on unstructured triangular and quadrilateral meshes. Our model learns to improve mesh quality according to a prescribed objective function purely via self-play reinforcement learning with no prior heuristics. The actions performed on the mesh are standard local and global element operations. The goal is to minimize the deviation of the node degrees from their ideal values, which in the case of interior vertices leads to a minimization of irregular nodes.

Ultrathin Amorphous Silica Membrane Enhances Proton Transfer across Solid-to-Solid Interfaces of Stacked Metal Oxide Nanolayers while Blocking Oxygen

A large jump of proton transfer rates across solid-to-solid interfaces by inserting an ultrathin amorphous silica layer into stacked metal oxide nanolayers is discovered using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (FT-IRRAS). The triple stacked nanolayers of Co 3 O 4 , SiO 2 , and TiO 2 prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) enable a proton flux of 2400 ± 60 s -1 nm -2 (pH 4, room temperature), while a single TiO 2 (5 nm) layer exhibits a threefold lower flux of 830 s -1 nm -2 . Based on FT-IRRAS measurements, this remarkable enhancement is proposed to originate from the sandwiched silica layer forming interfacial SiOTi and SiOCo linkages to TiO 2 and Co 3 O 4 nanolayers, respectively, with the O bridges providing fast H + hopping pathways across the solid-to-solid interfaces. Finally, together with the complete O 2 impermeability of a 2 nm ALD-grown SiO 2 layer, the high flux for proton transport across multi-stack metal oxide layers opens up the integration of incompatible catalytic environments to form functional nanoscale assemblies such as artificial photosystems for CO 2 reduction by H 2 O.

Tuning the Mechanical and Electric Properties of Conjugated Polymer Semiconductors: Side–Chain Design Based on Asymmetric Benzodithiophene Building Blocks

Understanding molecular design rules for stretchable polymer semiconductors is important for enabling next generation stretchable electronic circuits. To simultaneously improve both electrical properties and mechanical stretchability, a design strategy is reported in introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with bulky side groups in semiconducting polymers. In this work, the understanding of this design concept is improved by systematically investigating the effect of different types of bulky side groups asymmetrically substituted on conjugated polymer semiconductor backbones. Specifically, four types of side groups are investigated, including naphthalene (NaPh), biphenyl (PhPh), thienylphenyl (ThPh), and alkylphenyl (C4Ph), asymmetrically substituted on benzodithiophene units, namely asy-BDT. With the four types of side groups installed on BDT-containing conjugated polymers in an asymmetrical fashion, it is observed that they reduced the polymer chain aggregation and film crystallinity, hence improving the film stretchability. Furthermore, the fully conjugated polymer back-bone allows maintenance of good charge carrier mobilities. Specifically, polymer PDPP-C4Ph (with C4Ph side groups) shows the highest mobility in the fully stretchable transistor and maintained its mobility even after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Altogether, the results provide anunderstanding of the use of asymmetrically substituted fused-ring conjugated polymer structures to tune mechanical and charge transport properties.
