Multiple transonic solutions with a new class of shock transitions in steady isothermal solar and stellar winds

It is shown that a new class of shock transitions arises in the transonic solutions of the steady isothermal solar wind equations when momentum deposition and/or nonradial flow tube divergence give rise to multiple critical points in the flow. These shock transitions between critical solutions occur for a certain range of the parameters which characterize the momentum deposition function. The isothermal wind equations allow multiple transonic solutions in the presence of such shock transitions, yielding a continuous solution passing through an inner critical point and solutions involving a shock transition between critical solutions. It is determined that these multiple transonic solutions have the same flow speed at the base but different supersonic flow speeds at infinity. It is found that the nonradial flow tube divergence and momentum addition are equivalent, which gives rise to multiple critical points and hence to multiple transonic solutions with shock transitions. In addition, the physical relevance of these properties are examined for astrophysical systems such as the inner solar wind, flows in extragalactic jets, and accretion discs.

Stability of the Shuttle on-orbit flight control system for a class of flexible payloads

The stability of the Space Shuttle on-orbit flight control system is determined for a class of payloads for which the payload is tilted out of the orbiter bay and the bending can be modeled as localized at a pivot. Examples are the Inertial Upper Stage or the Centaur with attached spacecraft during deployment. The many inertial, geometric, and jet option parameters are reduced to a smaller set which allows the determination of stability or instability as a function of bending frequency and the other elements of the set. The resulting stability charts, which are presented, can be used by payload designers and misssion planners to predict possible instability without elaborate analysis or simulation.

An approximation formula for a class of Markov reliability models

A way of considering a small but often used class of reliability model and approximating algebraically the systems reliability is shown. The models considered are appropriate for redundant reconfigurable digital control systems that operate for a short period of time without maintenance, and for such systems the method gives a formula in terms of component fault rates, system recovery rates, and system operating time.

Implications of a class of grand unified theories for large scale structure in the universe

A class of grand unified theories in which cosmologicaly significant axion and neutrino energy densities arise naturally is discussed. To obtain large scale structure three scenarios are considered: (1) an inflationary scenario; (2) inflation followed by string production; and (3) a non-inflationary scenario with density fluctuations caused solely by strings. Inflation may be compatible with the recent observational indications that mega 1 on the scale of superclusters, particularly if strings are present.

Closed-form solutions for a class of optimal quadratic regulator problems with terminal constraints

Closed-form solutions are derived for coupled Riccati-like matrix differential equations describing the solution of a class of optimal finite time quadratic regulator problems with terminal constraints. Analytical solutions are obtained for the feedback gains and the closed-loop response trajectory. A computational procedure is presented which introduces new variables for efficient computation of the terminal control law. Two examples are given to illustrate the validity and usefulness of the theory.

Elasticity solutions for a class of composite laminate problems with stress singularities

A study on the fundamental mechanics of fiber-reinforced composite laminates with stress singularities is presented. Based on the theory of anisotropic elasticity and Lekhnitskii's complex-variable stress potentials, a system of coupled governing partial differential equations are established. An eigenfunction expansion method is introduced to determine the orders of stress singularities in composite laminates with various geometric configurations and material systems. Complete elasticity solutions are obtained for this class of singular composite laminate mechanics problems. Homogeneous solutions in eigenfunction series and particular solutions in polynomials are presented for several cases of interest. Three examples are given to illustrate the method of approach and the basic nature of the singular laminate elasticity solutions. The first problem is the well-known laminate free-edge stress problem, which has a rather weak stress singularity. The second problem is the important composite delamination problem, which has a strong crack-tip stress singularity. The third problem is the commonly encountered bonded composite joints, which has a complex solution structure with moderate orders of stress singularities.

Implications of a class of grand-unified theories for large-scale structure in the universe

A class of grand-unified theories in which cosmologically significant axion and neutrino energy densities arise naturally is considered. To obtain large-scale structure, attention is given to (1) an inflationary scenario, (2) inflation followed by string production, and (3) a noninflationary scenario with density fluctuations caused solely by strings. It is shown that inflation may be compatible with the recent observational indications that Omega less than 1 on the scale of superclusters, particularly if strings are present.

Two classes of solar energetic particle events associated with impulsive and long duration soft X-ray flares

Solar energetic particle events observed in space have different properties depending on the class of associated flare. Impulsive flares, which occur low in the corona in regions of high energy density, are associated with particle events which are deficient in protons. These events are rarely associated with coronal mass ejections and interplanetary shocks. The vast majority of large, high energy proton events are associated with long duration flares, many of which are also associated with fast coronal mass ejections and strong interplanetary shocks. Such flare events originate relatively high in the corona.

Grazing incidence telescopes - A new class for soft X-ray and EUV spectroscopy

A new class of grazing incidence telescopes is identified, and its advantages for stellar spectroscopy are discussed. In particular, three types of telescope geometry consisting of a primary and a secondary, both at grazing incidence, are proposed. Type I delivers a converging beam having a real focus; type II delivers a diverging beam from a virtual focus, and type III delivers a collimated beam concentrated relative to the primary aperture. The three telescope types are shown to possess unique properties which improve the efficiency and shorten the length of soft X-ray/EUV spectrographs.

Proposed design class of grazing incidence echelle spectrometers - Critical analysis and reevaluation

The class of miltibounce grazing spectrometers proposed by Cash (1982) and by McClintock and Cash (1982) is analyzed, and performance values significantly lower than asserted by these authors are found. Ray tracing calculations used to examine the design parameters given in the above papers are reported, as is the efficiency which results from use of accepted reflectance data. Several schemes which can improve some of the performance parameters are indicated.

A class of airfoils having finite trailing edge pressure gradients

Some new developments relevant to the design of single-element airfoils using potential flow methods are presented. In particular, the ramifications of the unbounded trailing edge pressure gradients generally present in the potential flow solution for the flow over an airfoil are examined, and the conditions necessary to obtain a class of airfoils having finite trailing edge pressure gradients developed. The incorporation of these conditions into the inverse method of Eppler for the design of low-speed airfoils is discussed, and designs generated using the modified scheme are presented for consideration. A detailed viscous analysis of one of these airfoils demonstrates a significant reduction in the strong inviscid-viscid interactions generally present near the trailing edge. These reductions offer the possibility of improved airfoil performance, as well as the possibility of improved accuracy in the methods of airfoil design and analysis.

A procedure for obtaining explicit solutions to a class of Fredholm integral equations

A Fredholm integral equation is solved in closed form by reducing it to a standard boundary value problem for a sectionally analytic function. The procedure maybe extended to more general classes of functions whose Fourier transforms only exist along certain lines in the complex k-plane. Examples are used to illustrate the results.

Fractional representation theory - Robustness results with applications to finite dimensional control of a class of linear distributed systems

This paper reviews and extends the fractional representation theory. In particular, new and powerful robustness results are presented. This new theory is utilized to develop a preliminary design methodology for finite dimensional control of a class of linear evolution equations on a Banach space. The design is for stability in an input-output sense, but particular attention is paid to internal stability as well.

Closed-form solutions for a class of optimal quadratic tracking problems

Closed-form solutions are derived for a class of tracking problems including a linear optimal regulator and a prefilter for a time-invariant plant. The solutions for the prefilter equation and state trajectory coupled by the Riccati equation are exponentially related to the stability matrix of the plant. A computational procedure is presented in recursive form when the desired output state dynamics is assumed linear and time-invariant. Several examples are given for illustration.

Dynamic characteristics of two 300 kW class dual keel space station concepts

Results from an investigation of the dynamic behavior of a 300 kW class solar dynamic powered, dual kell space station are presented. The purpose of the investigation was to determine and assess the influence of space station truss bay size on station controllability during rigid body attitude adjustment and orbit reboost maneuvers. The dual keel space station concept is defined and two finite element models (one which has a truss bay size of 5m and another with a truss bay size of 9 feet) are described. Rigid and flexible body characteristics of the two space station models are also presented. Finally, results from a transient response analysis, where the stations are subjected to an orbit reboost maneuver, are summarized.

Two classes of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances observed with an array on HF-Doppler sounders

The importance of the quasi-evanescent mode of acoustic-gravity waves (AGW) was recently stressed to elaborate on the daytime dispersion characteristics of horizontal velocity of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MS-TID) which were observed by a high frequency Doppler (HFD) sounder array in central Japan. Observed MS-TIDs were classified into two categories: the internal mode and the quasi-evanescent mode as regards physical implication. Nonlinear wave-wave interaction is proposed in an attempt to explain salient features of the latter-class TID.
