Interference Control of Fano Resonances and Dynamical Imaging of an Electron Wave Packet

The Fano line shape, arising from the interference of pathways for the excitation of discrete and continuum states, plays a fundamental role in many branches of physics, chemistry, and materials science. Exciting the resonance with a high harmonic provides naturally a phase delay between the pathways leading to a complex asymmetry parameter. We demonstrate that its amplitude and phase can be controlled on the femtosecond and attosecond time scales, respectively. With our high-energy-resolution (10-meV) experiment, we dynamically image a resonance-enhanced electron wave packet during its temporal evolution, extracting both the amplitude and the phase. Calculations reproduce our experimental results. Our approach constitutes a method for measuring the photoionization delays of a resonance and enables the reconstruction of the electron wave packet in the time domain. This concept of an interference-controlled Fano line shape is a step toward attosecond quantum optics with potential ramifications into nanoscience and next-generation optical materials.

Analytical and experimental investigation of aircraft metal structures reinforced with filamentary composites. Phase 2: Structural fatigue, thermal cycling, creep, and residual strength

Specimens representative of metal aircraft structural components reinforced with boron filamentary composites were manufactured and tested under cyclic loading, cyclic temperature, or continuously applied loading to evaluate some of the factors that affect structural integrity under cyclic conditions. Bonded, stepped joints were used throughout to provide composite-to-metal transition regions at load introduction points. Honeycomb panels with titanium or aluminum faces reinforced with unidirectional boron composite were fatigue tested at constant amplitude under completely reversed loading. Results indicated that the matrix material was the most fatigue-sensitive part of the design, with debonding initiating in the stepped joints. However, comparisons with equal weight all-metal specimens show a 10 to 50 times improved fatigue life. Fatigue crack propagation and residual strength were studied for several different stiffened panel concepts, and were found to vary considerably depending on the configuration. Composite-reinforced metal specimens were also subjected to creep and thermal cycling tests. Thermal cycling of stepped joint tensile specimens resulted in a ten percent decrease in residual strength after 4000 cycles.

Properties of superconducting Nb3Ga materials.

The superconducting-to-normal phase boundary was studied experimentally in several Nb-Ga materials as a function of applied field and superconducting transition temperature. When properly fabricated, the stoichiometric material Nb3Ga yields a superconducting transition temperature of 20.3 K, the highest yet reported for a binary alloy. Preliminary work shows that Nb-Ga materials with a superconducting transition temperature of 19 K can be made by chemical vapor deposition, a process commonly used for producing commercial superconducting tape.

The mini-O, a digital superhet, or a truly low-cost Omega navigation receiver

A quartz tuning fork filter circuit and some unique CMOS clock logic methods provide a very simple OMEGA-VLF receiver with true hyperbolic station pair phase difference outputs. An experimental system was implemented on a single battery-operated circuit board requiring only an external antenna preamplifier, and LOP output recorder. A bench evaluation and preliminary navigation tests indicate the technique is viable and can provide very low-cost OMEGA measurement systems. The method is promising for marine use with small boats in the present form, but might be implemented in conjunction with digital microprocessors for airborne navigation aids.

Chromium basalts - Experimental determination of redox states and partitioning among synthetic silicate phases

Experiments were performed on silicate compositions in the forsterite-anorthite-silica and forsterite-anorthite-diopside systems to determine the relative amounts of Cr(II), Cr(III), and Cr(VI) over a wide range of oxygen partial pressures from 10 to the -10th to 1 atm at 1500 and 1550 C. Redox states were measured by visible absorption spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and titration. It was found that Cr is present almost exclusively as Cr(III) in terrestrial basaltic liquids and as a mixture of Cr(III) and Cr(II) in lunar basaltic liquids.

Laser space rendezvous and docking system study continuation

Investigations were made of a configuration for a spaceborne laser radar (ladar) to meet the requirements for rendezvous and docking with a cooperative object in synchronous orbit. An analysis was completed of laser phase locking techniques, while experimental verification was made of pulse repetition frequency and resonant scanning control loops. Data measurements on a satellite mock-up were also made. The investigation supports the original contention that a rendezvous and docking ladar can be configured to offer a cost effective and reliable solution to envisioned space missions.

Interaction of NaCl/g/ and HCl/g/ with condensed Na2SO4

Na2SO4(l)-NaCl(g) interactions were studied at a total pressure of one atmosphere of air or oxygen for various temperatures of Na2SO4(l) and for various partial pressures of NaCl(g) and H2O(g). Mass spectrometric sampling techniques were used to identify and monitor gas phase species. Continuous recording thermomicrogravimetric measurements were conducted to determine condensed phase weight change rates. Experimental measurements were supplemented with thermodynamic calculations. Numerous experiments were performed at sample temperatures of 900 and 1000 C with 300 ppm NaCl(g). In these experiments, the reproducibility of the Na2SO4 vaporization weight loss rate and initial weight gain upon addition of NaCl(g) were found to be satisfactory. It was found that the addition of NaCl(g) to air flowing over Na2SO4(l) at 900 and 1000 C enhances the rate of weight loss of the Na2SO4(l). This enhancement increases when H2O(g) is also added to the air flow.

Enclosure fire hazard analysis using relative energy release criteria

A method for predicting the probable course of fire development in an enclosure is presented. This fire modeling approach uses a graphic plot of five fire development constraints, the relative energy release criteria (RERC), to bound the heat release rates in an enclosure as a function of time. The five RERC are flame spread rate, fuel surface area, ventilation, enclosure volume, and total fuel load. They may be calculated versus time based on the specified or empirical conditions describing the specific enclosure, the fuel type and load, and the ventilation. The calculation of these five criteria, using the common basis of energy release rates versus time, provides a unifying framework for the utilization of available experimental data from all phases of fire development. The plot of these criteria reveals the probable fire development envelope and indicates which fire constraint will be controlling during a criteria time period. Examples of RERC application to fire characterization and control and to hazard analysis are presented along with recommendations for the further development of the concept.

Phase 1 of the First Solar Small Power System Experiment (experimental System No. 1). Volume 1: Technical Studies for Solar Point-focusing, Distributed Collector System, with Energy Conversion at the Collector, Category C

The technical and economic feasibility of a solar electric power plant for a small community is evaluated and specific system designs for development and demonstration are selected. All systems investigated are defined as point focusing, distributed receiver concepts, with energy conversion at the collector. The preferred system is comprised of multiple parabolic dish concentrators employing Stirling cycle engines for power conversion. The engine, AC generator, cavity receiver, and integral sodium pool boiler/heat transport system are combined in a single package and mounted at the focus of each concentrator. The output of each concentrator is collected by a conventional electrical distribution system which permits grid-connected or stand-alone operation, depending on the storage system selected.

Surface erosion caused on Mars from Viking descent engine plume

During the Martian landings the descent engine plumes on Viking Lander 1 (VL-1) and Viking Lander 2 (VL-2) eroded the Martian surface materials. This had been anticipated and investigated both analytically and experimentally during the design phase of the Viking spacecraft. This paper presents data on erosion obtained during the tests of the Viking descent engine and the evidence for erosion by the descent engines of VL-1 and VL-2 on Mars. From these and other results, it is concluded that there are four distinct surface materials on Mars: (1) drift materials, (2) crusty to cloddy material, (3) blocky material, and (4) rock.

The permanent electric dipole moment of chromium monoxide

The permanent electric dipole moments for the X 5Pi and B 5pi states of gas-phase CrO have been experimentally determined using the sub-Doppler optical technique of intermodulated fluorescence spectroscopy in conjunction with the Stark effect. The measured values are 3.88 + or - 0.13 and 4.1 + or - 1.8 D for the X and B states, respectively. The theoretical values determined for the X state using multireference CI iterative-natural-orbital and finite-field calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental value.
