Feedback Control Systems Loop Shaping Design with Practical Considerations

This paper describes loop shaping control design in feedback control systems, primarily from a practical stand point that considers design specifications. Classical feedback control design theory, for linear systems where the plant transfer function is known, has been around for a long time. But it s still a challenge of how to translate the theory into practical and methodical design techniques that simultaneously satisfy a variety of performance requirements such as transient response, stability, and disturbance attenuation while taking into account the capabilities of the plant and its actuation system. This paper briefly addresses some relevant theory, first in layman s terms, so that it becomes easily understood and then it embarks into a practical and systematic design approach incorporating loop shaping design coupled with lead-lag control compensation design. The emphasis is in generating simple but rather powerful design techniques that will allow even designers with a layman s knowledge in controls to develop effective feedback control designs.

Flexibility effects on the control system performance of large scale robotic manipulators

Structural flexibility of robotic manipulators becomes significant and limits the performance of a control system when manipulators are large structures, manipulating on large payloads, and/or operating at high speeds. The question of when a manipulator can be considered rigid or must be considered flexible is studied as a function of manipulator dynamics and task characteristics. Results are interpreted in simple quantitative forms which can be used as design and analysis tools to decide whether or not the manipulator flexibility will be a significant factor for a given task condition. The limitations imposed by the manipulator flexibility on the joint variable feedback control system performance is determined using linear and nonlinear methods. The closed loop eigenstructure behavior of finite dimensional models under joint variable feedback is studied and results are compared with the previously reported results.

Weak lensing combined with the kinetic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect: a study of baryonic feedback

ABSTRACT Extracting precise cosmology from weak lensing surveys requires modelling the non-linear matter power spectrum, which is suppressed at small scales due to baryonic feedback processes. However, hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations make widely varying predictions for the amplitude and extent of this effect. We use measurements of Dark Energy Survey Year 3 weak lensing (WL) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope DR5 kinematic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (kSZ) to jointly constrain cosmological and astrophysical baryonic feedback parameters using a flexible analytical model, ‘baryonification’. First, using WL only, we compare the $S_8$ constraints using baryonification to a simulation-calibrated halo model, a simulation-based emulator model, and the approach of discarding WL measurements on small angular scales. We find that model flexibility can shift the value of $S_8$ and degrade the uncertainty. The kSZ provides additional constraints on the astrophysical parameters, with the joint WL + kSZ analysis constraining $S_8=0.823^{+0.019}_{-0.020}$. We measure the suppression of the non-linear matter power spectrum using WL + kSZ and constrain a mean feedback scenario that is more extreme than the predictions from most hydrodynamical simulations. We constrain the baryon fractions and the gas mass fractions and find them to be generally lower than inferred from X-ray observations and simulation predictions. We conclude that the WL + kSZ measurements provide a new and complementary benchmark for building a coherent picture of the impact of gas around galaxies across observations.

Application of stochastic optimal reduced state feedback gain computation procedures to the design of aircraft gust alleviation controllers

A stochastic linear model that accounts for process parameter and initial uncertainty, measurement noise, and a restricted number of measurable outputs was used to determine feedback gains useful for reducing the vertical acceleration which results from the presence of a vertical wind gust. Considered in the study were the influence of various feedback configurations, the effects of sensor noise, flight condition changes, and initialization procedures. Results showed that for sixth order linearized longitudinal motion, a controller with feedback on three states could be designed for effective gust alleviation taking into account both sensor noise and flight condition variation.

Artificial intelligence time series forecasting for feed-forward laser stabilization

Laser plasma accelerators, typically operating at 1–10 Hz repetition rates, have the ability to produce high-quality electron beams in compact, all-optical-driven configurations, with the electron beams uniquely suited for a wide variety of accelerator-based applications. However, fluctuations and drifts in the laser delivery to the meter-scaled and below plasma target (the electron beam source) will translate into electron beam source variations that can limit their utility for demanding applications like light sources or linear colliders. Commercially available active feedback laser stabilization systems are intrinsically bandwidth limited due to their integration with multi-inch corrective mirror mounts which minimizes their effectiveness. In this manuscript, we present a Neural Network time series forecaster that can predict laser position fluctuations of the laser delivery to the final target well ahead of a future laser shot. The Root-Mean-Square-Error (RMSE) of the prediction accuracy was < 2 μ m for a 1 / e 2 beam radius of 34 μ m . Our feed-forward approach serves as a first-step in circumventing the bandwidth limitations imposed by the currently available stabilization systems since it allows for mirrors to be moved into position ahead of time to offset the predicted future position drift. This will help advance laser plasma accelerator research by providing greater robustness and stability needed for its applications.

High-resolution in-beam video rate imaging with the ClearXCam for synchrotron beamlines

The ClearXCam detector is a new video rate imaging in-beam monitor based on a diamond sensor. Imaging with 2304 effective pixels is achieved by sequentially biasing one of 48 metal stripes on one side of a diamond sensor, while reading out the current from 48 stripes on the other side of the sensor. This system was characterized for real-time X-ray beam diagnostics at synchrotron beamline 17-BM at the National Synchrotron Light Source II. Significant results include: detection of in-beam structure via the imaging mode, beam focusing in one minute with real-time imaging feedback during a focusing event, linearity over five orders of magnitude, validation of a fast mode operating at 100 Hz, and sub-micron beam-positioning resolution. The system is now available commercially.

Experiences and Lessons from Field Demonstration of Grid-forming Inverter in An AC Microgrid

The validation of GFM control strategies through simulation and hardware demonstration is important before their large-scale deployments in the real grid. Considering the importance of testing and validation, several works have explored the GFM inverter’s capability to blackstart a microgrid, synchronize and share loads, and interact with various types of generation sources and loads present in the grid. Herein, this paper complements the existing works by presenting the results and analysis of a field demonstration in an actual AC microgrid. The capability of a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) GFM inverter equipped with a recursive feedback type of non-linear device level control to operate with PV source on its DC input and off-the-shelf PVGFL inverters and EV chargers of different kinds on the AC side is explored. The analysis and conclusions drawn would inform the readers to make better decisions during the field demonstration process.

Angles of multivariable root loci

A generalized eigenvalue problem is demonstrated to be useful for computing the multivariable root locus, particularly when obtaining the arrival angles to finite transmission zeros. The multivariable root loci are found for a linear, time-invariant output feedback problem. The problem is then employed to compute a closed-loop eigenstructure. The method of computing angles on the root locus is demonstrated, and the method is extended to a multivariable optimal root locus.

An application of nonlinear programming to the design of regulators of a linear-quadratic formulation

A design technique is proposed for linear regulators in which a feedback controller of fixed structure is chosen to minimize an integral quadratic objective function subject to the satisfaction of integral quadratic constraint functions. Application of a nonlinear programming algorithm to this mathematically tractable formulation results in an efficient and useful computer aided design tool. Particular attention is paid to computational efficiency and various recommendations are made. Two design examples illustrate the flexibility of the approach and highlight the special insight afforded to the designer. One concerns helicopter longitudinal dynamics and the other the flight dynamics of an aerodynamically unstable aircraft.

Design and simulation of closed-loop ground alignment of inertial platforms with sway motion

This paper is concerned with the application of optimal estimation and control concepts to the ground alignment of inertial platforms subjected to random sway motion. A seventh-order Kalman filter has been designed for estimating the platform misalignments and sway motion. Using the linear quadratic optimal regulator techniques, feedback controller gains have been designed to drive the initial misalignments to a small value. A reconfiguration of the filter controller scheme has been proposed and verified by Monte Carlo simulation for improving the speed of alignment without changing the alignment accuracy.

Frequency-shaped large-angle maneuvers

The paper considers the problem of maneuvering a flexible spacecraft through large angles in finite time. The basic control problem is divided into two parts. The first part consists of generating a frequency-shaped open-loop solution for the nonlinear rigid body as the nominal solution. The resulting two-point boundary-value problem is solved by introducing a continuation method for altering the mass distribution and boundary conditions for the spacecraft. For the second part, a feedback control is designed by linearizing the flexible body response about several points along the rigid body nominal solution. The perturbation gains are designed by using a frequency-shaped cost functional approach. The gains are linearly interpolated to produce smooth control time-histories as the linear piecewise constant plant models change during the maneuver.

Nonlinear input-output systems

Necessary and sufficient conditions that the nonlinear system dot-x = f(x) + ug(x) and y = h(x) be locally feedback equivalent to the controllable linear system dot-xi = A xi + bv and y = C xi having linear output are found. Only the single input and single output case is considered, however, the results generalize to multi-input and multi-output systems.

Three axis rotational maneuver and vibration stabilization of elastic spacecraft

A control law for three-axis rotational maneuvers of a spacecraft beam-tip body configuration based on non-linear inversion and modal velocity feedback is presented. A decoupling attitude control law is presented such that in the closed-loop system the attitude angles of the spacecraft are independently controlled, using the control moments acting on the space vehicle. This controller asymptotically decouples the flexible dynamics from the rigid one and also allows the decomposition of the elastic dynamics into two subsystems representing the transverse deflections of the beam in two orthogonal planes. These low-order subsystems are used for the derivation of a modal velocity feedback stabilizer using the force and moment actuators at the end body. Simulation results are presented to show the capability of the controller.

Nonlinear system approximations

The approximation of a nonlinear system by a feedback linearizable system instead of a linear system is considered. Two approaches presently exist in the literature. One involves the concept of involutivity to a certain order, and the other considers a canonical expansion and pure feedback approximation. The relationship between these two methods is shown. This provides insight into lower-order invariants in the equivalence problem for two nonlinear systems. The output time responses for a nonlinear system and its feedback linearizable approximation are outlined.
