Final SeaQuest Results on the Flavor Asymmetry of the Proton Light-Quark Sea with Proton-Induced Drell-Yan Process

The Fermilab E906/SeaQuest collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process using 120 GeV proton beams bombarding liquid hydrogen and liquid deuterium targets. A combined analysis of all collected data was performed to obtain the final results for the 𝜎 𝑝⁢𝑑 /2⁢𝜎 𝑝⁢𝑝 Drell-Yan cross section ratio covering the kinematic region of 0.13 < 𝑥 <0.45. The 𝑥 dependencies of $\bar{d}$(𝑥)/$\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) and $\bar{d}$(𝑥) $-$ $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) are extracted from these cross section ratios. It is found that $\bar{d}$(𝑥) is greater than $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) over the entire measured 𝑥 range, with improved statistical accuracy compared to previous measurements. The new results on $\bar{d}$(𝑥)/$\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) and $\bar{d}$(𝑥) $-$ $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) are compared to various parton distribution functions and theoretical calculations.

Probing the 𝑗 dependence of angular distributions and 𝑁=20 shell rigidity via the 36 S (𝑝,𝑑) 35 S reaction

An investigation of the N=20 36 S nucleus has been performed through a detailed study of the 3 6S (p,d)3 5S neutron-removal reaction, employing a 66-MeV proton beam at iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences and an innovative target design. Using the high-resolution K = 600 magnetic spectrometer, 98 states in 3 5S were identified up to 16-MeV excitation energy, including 47 previously unobserved states. Angular distributions and spectroscopic factors, including isobaric analog-state contributions, were extracted for 81 levels. A pronounced j dependence in the angular distributions of ℓ=2 states provides refined insights into the spin-orbit splitting. Finite-range adiabatic distorted-wave approximation calculations qualitatively reproduce the observed j dependence. Comparisons of the measured 1d 5/2 spectroscopic strength distribution with large-scale shell-model and ab initio calculations show good agreement overall, and the robustness of the N=20 shell closure in 36 S is confirmed when comparing the relatively low fp orbital occupancies in 40 Ca and 3 6S across the Fermi surface. This study underscores the utility of neutron-removal reactions in probing nuclear structure and the Fermi surface of sd nuclei and beyond. The findings advance our understanding of shell evolution and offer constraining data for theoretical models.

Performance of Oak Ridge National Laboratory spallation neutron source proton power upgrade cavities and cryomodule production

The Proton Power Upgrade initiative at Oak Ridge National Lab’s Spallation Neutron Source aims to greatly boost the capability of proton beam power. This upgrade involves the integration of seven additional cryomodules, each housing four six-cell high-beta ( β = 0.81 ) superconducting radio frequency cavities. These cavities, manufactured and processed by Research Instruments in Germany, underwent meticulous treatment, including electropolishing as the bulk and final vital step. Upon delivery to Jefferson Lab, a total of 28 cavities for seven cryomodules, along with an additional four cavities for a spare cryomodule, underwent thorough vertical qualification tests, meeting the required specifications. Following cavity tanking and subsequent rf testing, the assembly of eight cryomodules was successfully executed, with all 32 cavities demonstrating compliance with acceptance criteria. The transportation of the cryomodule to SNS for high-power testing in the tunnel yielded exceptional results. Notably, the performance surpassed specifications, in terms of quality factor and accelerating gradient. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Mass-asymmetric fission of 205,207,209 Bi at energies close to the fission barrier using proton bombardment of 204,206,208 Pb

Background: Recent observation of mass-asymmetric fission in neutron-deficient Hg and Pt nuclei has reignited interest in fission fragment mass distributions close to Pb. Investigations at energies close to the fission barrier, where mass-asymmetric fission is expected to be most obvious and the sensitivity to shell effects is maximized, are limited in this mass region. Purpose: To measure fission mass distributions for 205,207,209 Bi nuclei at the lowest possible excitation energies to determine how the mass distributions change with excitation energy and the neutron number of the compound nucleus. Method: Proton beams bombarding targets of 204,206,208 Pb were used to study the fission of 205,207,209 Bi at energies from just above to 10 MeV above their fission barriers. Fission fragments were measured using the CUBE fission spectrometer. Fission fragment mass distributions were determined using a newly developed time difference analysis method. Mass distributions were characterized by triple-Gaussian fits to determine the systematic trends across each isotope with excitation energy. Results: Measured mass distributions of all three Bi isotopes exhibit a component of mass-asymmetric fission at all energies studied. The probability of mass-asymmetric fission decreases significantly with increasing excitation energy, from ≈70 to ≈40% over a 10-MeV range. Comparisons between the three Bi isotopes hint at an increase in the mass-symmetric fission yield with increasing neutron number, which could be due to a decrease in the difference between the symmetric and asymmetric fission barriers. The centroids of the mass-asymmetric peaks suggest that several deformed shell gaps in the fission fragments could be contributing to the presence of the mass-asymmetric fission mode with Z light ≃ 38, Z heavy ≃ 45, and N light ≃ 56 all present in the fission fragments. Conclusions: Measurements of fission mass distributions at the lowest possible excitation energies above the fission barrier provide an excellent platform to investigate the origins of the mass-asymmetric fission mode. Finally, further systematic measurements at these energies offer an opportunity to rigorously test new models of fission in this mass region.

Long-lived isomeric states and quasiparticle band structures in neutron-rich 162,164 Gd nuclei from β decay

Neutron-rich nuclei 162,164 Eu were produced by bombarding a proton beam on a 238 U target at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and mass separating the 162,164 Eu products. New level schemes and new γ-ray transitions of the daughters 162,164 Gd were identified from β-decay spectroscopy studies. Additionally, half-lives of the 162,164 Eu were remeasured to clarify the previous ambiguous results. Two quasiparticle band structures were built and compared with neighboring nuclei. The β and γ bands were extended in 162 Gd and a γ band was extended in 164 Gd. Half-lives of the isomeric states at (6 - ) 1449 keV in 162 Gd and (4 - ) 1096 keV in 164 Gd were measured to be 99(3) μs and 0.56(3) μs, respectively. Projected shell model calculations were performed and found to be in good agreement with all of the experimental data.

Stellar s-process neutron capture cross sections on 78,80,84,86 Kr determined via activation, atom trap trace analysis and decay counting

We present a detailed account of neutron capture experiments of astrophysical relevance on 78,80,84,86 Kr (n, γ) reactions at the border between weak and main s process. The experiments were performed with quasi-Maxwellian neutrons from the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) and the mA-proton beam at 1.93 MeV (2-3 kW) of the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF). The setup yields high-intensity approximate to 40 keV quasi-Maxwellian neutrons (3-5 x10 10 n/s) closely reproducing the conditions of s-process stellar nucleosynthesis. A sample of 100 mg of atmospheric, pre-nuclear-age Kr gas contained in a Ti spherical shell was activated in the LiLiT neutron field. The abundances of long-lived Kr isotopes ( 81,85g Kr) were measured by atom counting via atom trap trace analysis (ATTA) at Argonne National Laboratory and low-level counting (LLC) at University of Bern. This work is the first measurement of a nuclear cross section using atom counting via ATTA. The activities of short-lived Kr isotopes ( 79,85m,87 Kr) were measured by gamma-decay counting with a high-purity germanium detector. Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for s-process thermal energies are extracted. By comparison to reference values, our nucleosynthesis network calculations show that the experimental cross sections have a strong impact on calculated abundances of krypton and neighboring nuclides, in some cases improving agreement between theory and observations.

Production of η and η ′ mesons in p p and p Pb collisions

The production of η and η ′ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13 TeV and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16 TeV . The studies are performed in center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity regions 2.5 < y c . m . < 3.5 (forward rapidity) and − 4.0 < y c . m . < − 3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The η and η ′ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5 < p T < 10 GeV and 3 < p T < 10 GeV , respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for η and η ′ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of η mesons are also used to calculate η / π 0 cross-section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as η and η ′ meson fragmentation. ©2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Removing flat directions in standard model EFT fits: How polarized electron-ion collider data can complement the LHC

We study the potential of future electron-ion collider (EIC) data to probe four-fermion operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). The ability to perform measurements with both polarized electron and proton beams at the EIC provides a powerful tool that can disentangle the effects from different SMEFT operators. We compare the potential constraints from an EIC with those obtained from Drell-Yan data at the Large Hadron Collider. We show that EIC data play an important complementary role since they probe combinations of Wilson coefficients not accessible through available Drell-Yan measurements.

Comparison of transverse single-spin asymmetries for forward π 0 production in polarized pp , p Al and p Au collisions at nucleon pair c.m. energy √sNN=200 GeV

The STAR collaboration reports a measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, A N , for neutral pions produced in polarized proton collisions with protons ( p p ), with aluminum nuclei ( p Al ) and with gold nuclei ( p Au ) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7 < η < 3.8 . Results are presented for π 0 s observed in the STAR forward meson spectrometer electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x ( x F ) and transverse momentum ( p T ) bins, spanning the range 0.17 < x F < 0.81 and 1.7 < p T < 6.0 GeV / c . For fixed x F < 0.47 , the asymmetries are found to rise with increasing transverse momentum. For larger x F , the asymmetry flattens or falls as p T increases. Parametrizing the ratio r ( A ) ≡ A N ( p A ) / A N ( p p ) = A P over the kinematic range, the ratio r ( A ) is found to depend only weakly on A , with ( P ) = - 0.027 ± 0.005 . No significant difference in P is observed between the low- p T region, p T < 2.5 GeV / c , where gluon saturation effects may play a role, and the high- p T region, p T > 2.5 GeV / c . It is further observed that the value of A N is significantly larger for events with a large- p T isolated π 0 than for events with a nonisolated π 0 accompanied by additional jetlike fragments. The nuclear dependence r ( A ) is similar for isolated and nonisolated π 0 events.

Measurements of jet observables sensitive to $\textit{b}$-quark fragmentation in $t\bar{t}$ events at the LHC with the ATLAS detector

Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of $\textit{b}$ quarks into $\textit{b}$ hadrons are measured using 36 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic $t\bar{t}$ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary $\textit{pp}$ interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the $\textit{b}$ hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with $\textit{p}$ values varying from 5 × 10 -4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from $e^+e^-$ collider experiments in which the $\textit{b}$ quarks originate from a color singlet $Z/γ^{\ast}$.

Longer-lived mediators from charged mesons and photons at neutrino experiments

Since many of the dark-sector particles interact with Standard Model (SM) particles in multiple ways, they can appear in experimental facilities where SM particles appear in abundance. In this study, we explore a particular class of longer-lived mediators that are dominantly produced from photons and charged mesons that arise in proton-beam fixed-target-type neutrino experiments. This class of mediators encompasses light scalars that appear in theories like extended Higgs sectors, muon(electro)philic scalars, etc. We evaluate the sensitivities of these mediators at beam-based neutrino experiments such as the finished ArgoNeuT, ongoing MicroBooNE, SBND, ICARUS, and the upcoming DUNE experiment. We find that muonphilic scalars are more enhanced while produced from three-body decay of charged mesons. The above-mentioned experiments can probe unexplored regions of parameter space that can explain the current discrepancy in the anomalous magnetic moment of muons. We further find that Compton-like scattering of photons is the largest source of electrophilic scalars. By utilizing this, the DUNE Near Detector can explore new regions in the sensitivity space of electrophilic scalars. We also show that Bethe-Heitler scattering processes can be used to probe flavor-specific lepton final states even for the mediator masses below twice the lepton mass. Enhancing the sensitivity to seesaw mechanism predictions in gauged B − L scenarios

New gauge bosons coupled to heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) are simple and well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. In searches for HNLs in proton fixed-target experiments, we find that a large population of gauge bosons ( Z ′ ) produced by proton bremsstrahlung may decay to HNLs, leading to a significant improvement in existing bounds on the ( m HNL , U α ), where U α represent the mixing between HNL and the active neutrinos with flavor α . We study this possibility in fixed target experiments with the 8 GeV proton beams, including SBND, MicroBooNE, and ICARUS, as well as DUNE and DarkQuest at 120 GeV. We find the projected sensitivities to additional Z ′ -mediated HNL production can bring the seesaw mechanism of the neutrino masses within a broadened experimental reach. Conceptual Design of a 20 T Hybrid Cos-Theta Dipole Superconducting Magnet for Future High-Energy Particle Accelerators

High energy physics research will need more and more powerful circular accelerators in the next decades. It is therefore desirable to have dipole magnets able to produce the largest possible magnetic field, in order to keep the machine diameter within a reasonable size. A 20 T dipole is considered a desired achievement since it would allow the construction of an 80 km machine, able to circulate 100 TeV proton beams. In order to reach 20 T, a hybrid Low-Temperature Superconductor (LTS) - High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) magnet is needed, since LTS technology is presently limited to ~16 T for accelerator magnet applications. In this paper, we present the design of a 6 layers 20 T hybrid dipole magnet using Nb 3 Sn (LTS) and Bi2212 (HTS). Here we show that it is possible to achieve this magnetic field with accelerator field quality, with sufficient margin on a realistic conductor, keeping the stresses within safe limit, avoiding conductor degradation.

ORBUMP Pulsed Dipole Magnet Design for Fermilab Booster

Fermilab initiated the accelerator magnet system upgrade project PIP-II for future neutrino experiments. Old ORBUMP pulsed dipoles should be replaced with new stronger magnets occupying the same space as old ones. Four of these magnets connected in series form dogleg type of proton beam orbit. The magnet field and 19 kA current pulse length are close to 1 ms. Old magnet cores were based on a ferrite material. For new magnets, a magnet gap field is above 0.4 T, which completely saturates ferrite material. So, for the magnet core, 0.127 mm thick laminations of low carbon steel with inorganic coating, as the magnet were placed in a vacuum box. There were investigated transient magnet parameters including skin effect in the iron core and in the single-turn copper coil. The integrated field homogeneity was improved by the copper coil shimming. Simulated by OPERA3D power losses were used for the thermal analysis by ANSYS code. The magnet performance is strongly coupled with the power source. The dynamic magnet inductance and resistance were included in the pulsed power source design. Finally, the paper presented the ORBUMP magnet system design.

Magnetic Measurements of Fermilab Rapid-Cycling Booster Gradient Magnets

Fermilab is upgrading its Booster synchrotron to increase ramp rate and intensity. This is part of the Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II) that will allow the Main Injector to achieve proton beam power of 1.2 MW within the next few years. This upgrade includes running the 55-year-old Booster magnets at 20 Hz instead of the usual 15 Hz, and construction of some shorter and wider aperture versions of these combined-function gradient magnets. Magnetic measurements were performed to characterize the present 15 Hz AC performance, and then again with 20 Hz ramp cycle to ensure performance and compatibility in this new operating regime. A 3 m-long curved flat-coil was developed for these measurements using Printed Circuit Board (PCB) technology. The probe also has a separate 0.5 m-long body-field probe, allowing integral, body, and end fields to be measured across 100 mm of the magnet aperture. The sampling rate for these measurements during the AC cycle was 200 kHz, and field resolution was better than 0.01%. Details of the probe, measurements, and results are presented.

Measurement of 139 La(p,x) cross sections from 35–60 MeV by stacked-target activation

A stacked-target of natural lanthanum foils (99.9119% 139 La) was irradiated using a 60 MeV proton beam at the LBNL 88-Inch Cyclotron. 139 La(p,x) cross sections are reported between 35–60 MeV for nine product radionuclides. The primary motivation for this measurement was the need to quantify the production of 134 Ce. As a positron-emitting analogue of the promising medical radionuclide 225 Ac, 134 Ce is desirable for in vivo applications of bio-distribution assays for this emerging radio-pharmaceutical. Finally, the results of this measurement were compared to the nuclear model codes TALYS, EMPIRE and ALICE (using default parameters), which showed significant deviation from the measured values.

Measurement of $\phi $ meson production in $p + p$ interactions at 40, 80 and $158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$ with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

Results on $\phi$ meson production in inelastic p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $\phi \to K^+K^-$ decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $\phi$ mesons as a function of rapidity $y$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ for proton beam momenta of 80 GeV/c and 158 GeV/c, as well as single differential spectra of $y$ or $p_T$ for beam momentum of 40 GeV/c. The corresponding total $\phi$ yields per inelastic p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $\phi$ meson production in p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $\phi$ mesons in p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observables.
