Survey of long-term durability of fiberglass reinforced plastic structures

Included are fluid containment vessels, marine structures, and aircraft components with up to 19 years of service. Correlations were obtained for the variation of static fatigue strength, cyclic fatigue strength, and residual burst strength for pressure vessels. In addition, data are presented for the effects of moisture on strength retention. Data variations were analyzed, and relationships and implications for testing are discussed. Change in strength properties for complete structures was examined for indications of the effects of environmental conditions such as moisture and outdoor exposure (ultraviolet radiation, weathering) on long term durability.

Model for antiorthostatic hypokinesia - Head-down tilt effects on water and salt excretion

Water and electrolyte excretion was investigated in antiorthostatic hypokinetic and orthostatic hypokinetic and control rats in metabolic cages. Significant (t test, P less than 0.05) diuresis, natriuresis, and kaliuresis occurred in the antiorthostatic hypokinetic subjects but did not occur in either the orthostatic hypokinetic or controls. Recovery from antiorthostatic hypokinesia was characterized by retention of water, sodium, and potassium. Patterns of changes in body weight and food and water consumption were virtually identical in antiorthostatic and orthostatic hypokinetic rats and thus could not account for the differences in renal handling of water and electrolytes. Also, differences in ingestion of food and water in controls could not account for differences in excretion of water and electrolytes between these and antiorthostatic hypokinetic rats. It was concluded that the antiorthostatic position was responsible for the diuresis and natriuresis and that the antiorthostatic hypokinetic rat appears to be a good model for the study of water and elecrolyte excretion during conditions such as bed rest, water immersion, and exposure to weightlessness.

Semiconductor-ferroelectric nonvolatile memory using anomalous high photovoltages in ferroelectric ceramics

A small ferroelectric ceramic element is used with an insulating gate transistor and two diodes as an electrically addressed, nonvolatile memory device which is read out nondestructively. The device uses the anomalous photovoltaic effect in ferroelectric ceramics, an effect in which the polarity and magnitude of photovoltages depend on the direction and magnitude of remanent polarization. Experimental results give memory characteristics. The device could be programmed with pulses as short as 200 ns. There is long-time retention of stored data.

Hybridized composites for resistance to fiber release

Under certain conditions of combined fire and impact, graphite fibers are released to the atmosphere by graphite fiber composites. This investigation was conducted to improve the retention of graphite fiber in these situations. Hybrid combinations of graphite tape and cloth, glass cloth, and resin additives were studied with epoxy and polyimide resin systems. Polyimide resins formed the most resistant composites and resins based on simple novolac epoxies the least resistant of those tested. Great improvement in the containment of the fibers was obtained using graphite/glass hybrids, and nearly complete prevention of individual fiber release was made possible by the use of resin additives.

Detection of stopped solar flare helium in lunar rock 68815

Steep increases were detected in the concentration profiles of He-3 and possibly of Ne-21 in the near-surface layers of lunar rock 68815, which was exposed on the lunar surface for 2 Myr. The concentration profile of He-3 is inconsistent with either spallation or solar wind components, but it agrees with expected ranges of stopped solar flare particles. Although the He-3 retention in this rock is determined to be very low (approximately 3% at the surface), a long-term average solar flare ratio He-4/He-3 can be estimated at 12 to within a factor of about 3. This ratio is two orders of magnitude smaller than the same ratio observed in the solar wind, but it is consistent with solar flare data from recent satellite observations.

Coal desulfurization by low temperature chlorinolysis, phase 3

Laboratory scale, bench scale batch reactor, and minipilot plant tests were conducted on 22 bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite coals. Chemical pretreatment and post treatment of coals relative to the chlorination were tried as a means of enhancing desulfurization by the chlorinolysis process. Elevated temperature (500-700 C) hydrogen treatment of chlorinolysis-processed coal at atmospheric pressure was found to substantially increase coal desulfurization up to 90 percent. Sulfur forms, proximate and ultimate analyses of the processed coal are included. Minipilot plant operation indicates that the continuous flow reactor provides coal desulfurization results comparable to those obtained in the batch reactor. Seven runs were conducted at coal feed rates of 1.5 to 8.8 kg per hour using water and methylchloroform solvents, gaseous chlorine feed of 3 to 31.4 SCFH at 21 to 70 C, and atmospheric pressure for retention times of 20 to 120 minutes.

The effect of resin on the impact damage tolerance of graphite-epoxy laminates

The effect of the matrix resin on the impact damage tolerance of graphite-epoxy composite laminates was investigated. The materials were evaluated on the basis of the damage incurred due to local impact and on their ability to retain compression strength in the presence of impact damage. Twenty-four different resin systems were evaluated. Five of the systems demonstrated substantial improvements compared to the baseline system including retention of compression strength in the presence of impact damage. Examination of the neat resin mechanical properties indicates the resin tensile properties influence significantly the laminate damage tolerance and that improvements in laminate damage tolerance are not necessarily made at the expense of room temperature mechanical properties. Preliminary results indicate a resin volume fraction on the order of 40 percent or greater may be required to permit the plastic flow between fibers necessary for improved damage tolerance.

High speed techniques for synthetic aperture radar image formation

One possible approach to high speed synthetic aperture radar signal reconstruction involves the utilization of two dimensional real time spatial light modulators as recyclable replacements for photographic film in the input transducer plane of a modified synthetic aperture radar (SAR) coherent optical processor. Leading candidate spatial light modulators include modified Pockels readout optical modulators (PROM), charge coupled devices (CCD) addressed liquid crystal light valves, and CCD addressed membrane light modulators. The fundamental physical limitations affecting SAR processor performance characteristics of such real time devices are under investigation. Current research on PROM is focused on the effects of device operatonal mode, device constitutive parameters, electro-optic crystal orientation, writing wavelength, frame rate/data overwrite/presuming, erasure completeness, and image retention on the overall quality of SAR image formation. Both modulated laser scanning and intensified CRT temporal to spatial input approaches are being examined.

Relationships between soil moisture-holding properties and soil texture, organic matter content, and bulk density

Specimens from the surface horizon and the subsoil of 62 soil horizons in Hedmark and Oppland were investigated to study how the mechanical composition of the soil, the organic matter content and the bulk density affect their porosity and air capacity and their total and available water content. Most of the specimens belonged to the loam group, and a smaller number was from sandy and silty types of soil. Equations were established to make it possible to calculate the water retention curves and the amount of available water from the above mentioned parameters. As a rule, errors derived from the equations are no greater than those which are found in similar research in other countries.

A study of the effects of long-term exposure to fuels and fluids on the behavior of advanced composite materials

The periodic testing and evaluation of graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy material systems after subjecting test specimens to prolonged exposure to several laboratory-controlled environments deemed typical of normal aircraft operations is discussed. It is noted that specimen immersion in water or water-based fluids resulted in the greatest effect on the mechanical properties tested. Also, the environmental fluids showed a tendency to affect Kevlar/epoxy systems at an earlier exposure period than the graphite/epoxy systems. Results also indicate mechanical property strength retention generally being lower for the Kevlar/epoxy systems when compared to the corresponding graphite/epoxy systems in similar environments, after prolonged exposure.

Performance deterioration due to acceptance testing and flight loads; JT90 jet engine diagnostic program

The results of a flight loads test of the JT9D-7 engine are presented. The goals of this test program were to: measure aerodynamic and inertia loads on the engine during flight, explore the effects of airplane gross weight and typical maneuvers on these flight loads, simultaneously measure the changes in engine running clearances and performance resulting from the maneuvers, make refinements of engine performance deterioration prediction models based on analytical results of the tests, and make recommendations to improve propulsion system performance retention. The test program included a typical production airplane acceptance test plus additional flights and maneuvers to encompass the range of flight loads in revenue service. The test results indicated that aerodynamic loads, primarily at take-off, were the major cause of rub-indicated that aerodynamic loads, primarily at take-off, were the major cause of rub-induced deterioration in the cold sectin of the engine. Differential thermal expansion between rotating and static parts plus aerodynamic loads combined to cause blade-to-seal rubs in the turbine.
