Results of RSI Thermal-structural Analysis

Thermostructural comparisons of mullite and silica reusable surface insulation materials for space shuttle application show that mullite is much more subject to thermal stress failure than silica composite materials.

Some studies on the use of NASTRAN for nuclear power plant structural analysis and design

Studies made on the use of NASTRAN for nuclear power plant analysis and design are presented. These studies indicate that NASTRAN could be effectively used for static, dynamic and special purpose problems encountered in the design of such plants. Normal mode capability of NASTRAN is extended through a post-processor program to handle seismic analysis. Static and dynamic substructuring is discussed. Extension of NASTRAN to include the needs in the civil engineering industry is discussed.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 data applications to geologic mapping, structural analysis and mineral resource inventory of South America with special emphasis on the Andes Mountain region

The author has identified the following significant results. Segerstrom delineated many grabens (down-faulted blocks) not shown on published maps of Argentina nor of South America. The faults that border the grabens are better appreciated in ERTS-1 imagery than on air photos or on the ground because of the masking affect of alluvial fill deposits. In frame no. 1188-13545 a change in local prevailing wind direction from east to southeast is noted in sand streams. In frame no. 1188-13551 it was surprising to see that Solar del Hombre Muerto was covered with water. In November 1971 the investigator has driven across the salt pan several times without wetting his wheels. It was also possible to differentiate the following rock and soil classes: Granites, metamorphic, volcanic rocks, Tertiary and Quaternary clastic deposits and salt pans. Portions of railroads and highways as well as small towns were identified. In frame no. 1188-13551 the Incahuasi Gold Mine and the Tincalayu Borax Mine were located.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 data applications to geologic mapping, structural analysis and mineral resource inventory of South America with special emphasis on the Andes Mountain region

The author has identified the following significant results. A color composite of image E1010-14035, dated 2 August 1972, covers the west central Bolivian Altiplano near Salar de Coipasa. It clearly shows the distribution of surface water and scant patches of vegetation. The Salar de Coipasa is the largest body of water in the area, about 130 sq km of dark blue fresh water. A lighter blue area south of the lake suggests a thin cover of highly saline water superposed on salt beds. The scattered vegetation patches are presumed to be native grasses, lichens, and possibly Indian potato and maiz areas. A detailed study has been made of the scene which provides 12 different interpretive overlays including geology, volcanology, soils, hydrology, and relative permeability. It was found that color composites provide at least 40% more information that do black and white renditions. An excellent example of change detection was provided by image E1244-14051, dated 24 March 1973. Water in the Salar de Coipasa had more than doubled as a result of the rains of the Bolivian winter, which generally occur in the February-March period. The Salars are excellent and highly sensitive moisture indicators in this highly arid region.

Structural analysis of wind turbine rotors for NSF-NASA Mod-0 wind power system

Preliminary estimates of vibratory loads and stresses in hingeless and teetering rotors for the proposed 100-kW wind power system are presented. Stresses in the shank areas of the 19-m (62.5-ft) blades are given for static, rated, and overload conditions. The teetering rotor has substantial advantages over the hingeless rotor with respect to shank stresses, fatigue life, and tower loading. A teetering rotor will probably be required in order to achieve a long service life in a large wind turbine exposed to periodic overload conditions.

Survey and development of finite elements for nonlinear structural analysis. Volume 1: Handbook for nonlinear finite elements

A survey of research efforts in the area of geometrically nonlinear finite elements is presented. The survey is intended to serve as a guide in the choice of nonlinear elements for specific problems, and as background to provide directions for new element developments. The elements are presented in a handbook format and are separated by type as beams, plates (or shallow shells), shells, and other elements. Within a given type, the elements are identified by the assumed displacement shapes and the forms of the nonlinear strain equations. Solution procedures are not discussed except when a particular element formulation poses special problems or capabilities in this regard. The main goal of the format is to provide quick access to a wide variety of element types, in a consistent presentation format, and to facilitate comparison and evaluation of different elements with regard to features, probable accuracy, and complexity.
