Half‐Fused Diketopyrrolopyrrole‐Based Conjugated Donor–Acceptor Polymer for Ambipolar Field‐Effect Transistors

Abstract A novel building block, denoted as half‐fused diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) (9‐(3‐octadecylhenicosyl)‐8‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐7 H ‐pyrrolo[3,4‐ a ]thieno[3,2‐ g ]indolizine‐7,10(9 H )‐dione), in which one of the flanking thiophene units is fused to one of the DPP rings via a carbon‐carbon double bond at the N‐position is reported. The half‐fused DPP is successfully utilized as an electron acceptor to prepare the conjugated donor–acceptor polymer PTFDFT , which exhibits ambipolar semiconducting behavior in ambient air. Theoretical calculations and absorption spectral studies show that the backbone of PTFDFT is more planar compared to the reference polymer with conventional DPP units. As a result, PTFDFT shows a narrow bandgap and low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. The more planar backbone with fewer side chains favors the dense packing of the polymer chains of PTFDFT with a short π–π stacking distance (3.49 Å). Grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering data further confirm the predominant edge‐on packing mode of the PTFDFT polymer chains on the substrate. As expected, the PTFDFT thin film shows excellent ambipolar semiconducting properties under ambient conditions, reaching 2.23 and 1.08 cm 2 V −1 s −1 for the n‐ and p‐channels, respectively. In addition, complementary‐like inverter with gain value as high as 141 is successfully constructed using the PTFDFT thin film.

Silica Nanodepletors: Targeting and Clearing Alzheimer's beta-Amyloid Plaques

Abnormal accumulation of beta-amyloid (A beta) peptide aggregates in the brain is a major hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A beta aggregates interfere with neuronal communications, ultimately causing neuronal damage and brain atrophy. Much effort has been made to develop AD treatments that suppress A beta aggregate formation, thereby attenuating A beta-induced neurotoxicity. Here, the design of A beta nanodepletors consisting of ultralarge mesoporous silica nanostructures and anti-A beta single-chain variable fragments, with the goal of targeting and eliminating aggregative A beta monomers, is reported. The A beta nanodepletors impart a notable decline in A beta aggregate formation, resulting in significant mitigation of A beta-induced neurotoxicity in vitro. Furthermore, stereotaxic injections of A beta nanodepletors into the brain of an AD mouse model system successfully suppress A beta plaque formation in vivo up to approximate to 30%, suggesting that A beta nanodepletors can serve as a promising antiamylodoisis material.

Manipulating Surface Termination of Perovskite Manganate for Oxygen Activation

For ABO 3 perovskite oxides, one of the key issues limiting their utilization in heterogeneous catalysis is the dominant presence of catalytically inactive A-site cations at the surface. The engineering of B-site terminated perovskites is considered as an effective method to address this issue, especially when dealing with Mn/Co-based perovskite catalysts. However, to date, such a strategy has not been fully successful and remains a major challenge in the field. Herein, a Mn-terminated La 0.45 Sr 0.45 MnO 3 (B-LSM) is successfully synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method, in which low-valence Mn ions partially occupy the A site to form the active Mn-excess phase. Additionally, experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the presence of the surface Mn termination in B-LSM optimizes the hybrid orbitals of Mn 3d-O 2p and promotes the activation of surface lattice oxygen, where the pristine inert lattice O 2- is evolved into active and stable lattice O 2-x . Such structural optimization significantly reduces the activation energy barriers on going from O 2 ⁻ species to important intermediate O - species during O 2 activation. Moreover, this results in good stability and Pt-like activity for the B-LSM during CO oxidation. This work offers a new chemical route for the design of advanced perovskite-type oxides possessing novel functions.

One-dimensional (1D) van der Waals materials, such as nanofibers or nanoribbons are considered as the future ultimate limit of downscaling for modern electrical and electrochemical devices. Here, for the first time, we successfully synthesize nanofibers of a solid solution transition metal trichalcogenide (TMTC), Nb 1-x Ta x S 3 , with outstanding electrical, thermal, and electrochemical characteristics rivaling the performance of the-state-of-the art materials for each application. This material shows nearly unchanged sheet resistance (≈740 Ω/sq -1 ) versus bending cycles tested up to 90 cycles, stable sheet resistance in ambient conditions tested up to 60 days, remarkably high electrical breakdown current density of ≈ 30 MA cm -2 , strong evidence of successive charge density wave (CDW) transitions, and outstanding thermal stability up to ≈900 K. Additionally, this material demonstrates excellent activity and selectivity for CO2 conversion to CO reaching ≈ 350 mA cm -2 at – 0.8 V vs RHE with an outstanding turnover frequency number of 25 for CO formation. It also exhibits an excellent performance in a high-rate Li-air battery with the specific capacity of 3000 mAhg -1 at a high current density of 0.3 mAcm -2 . This study uncovers the multifunctionality in 1D TMTC alloys for a wide range of high-impact applications and opens a new direction for the design of the next generation of low-dimensional materials with high performance.

Machine Learning on a Robotic Platform for the Design of Polymer–Protein Hybrids

Polymer–protein hybrids are intriguing materials that can bolster protein stability in non-native environments, thereby enhancing their utility in diverse medicinal, commercial, and industrial applications. One stabilization strategy involves designing synthetic random copolymers with compositions attuned to the protein surface, but rational design is complicated by the vast chemical and composition space. Here, a strategy is reported to design protein-stabilizing copolymers based on active machine learning, facilitated by automated material synthesis and characterization platforms. The versatility and robustness of the approach is demonstrated by the successful identification of copolymers that preserve, or even enhance, the activity of three chemically distinct enzymes following exposure to thermal denaturing conditions. Although systematic screening results in mixed success, active learning appropriately identifies unique and effective copolymer chemistries for the stabilization of each enzyme. Overall, this work broadens the capabilities to design fit-for-purpose synthetic copolymers that promote or otherwise manipulate protein activity, with extensions toward the design of robust polymer–protein hybrid materials.

Graphene K‐Tape Meshes for Densely Distributed Human Motion Monitoring

Abstract Wearable sensors that measure parameters associated with physical activity and bodily motions have been regarded as an indispensable tool for assessing personal wellness. Recent advances in nanocomposite strain sensors have been successfully used for monitoring skin strains and other strain‐derived physiological parameters. This study complements the existing body of work and presents a flexible, self‐adhering, fabric‐based wearable sensor for measuring skin strains and human motions. Graphene nanosheet thin films are directly spray‐coated onto kinesiology tape (K‐Tape) to obtain a self‐adhering strain sensor of high sensitivity and linearity. Their stable sensing performance and high repeatability are verified, while human subject tests confirm that they adequately capture muscle engagement during functional movements. In addition, densely distributed strain monitoring can be achieved using an electrical impedance tomography measurement approach and algorithm. Spatial strain sensing is successfully demonstrated using a single strip of piezoresistive K‐Tape, as well as when a K‐Tape network or mesh pattern is formed. The results show promise for using graphene K‐Tape meshes to measure how specific major muscle groups engage during different physical activities.

Broadband and Tunable Microwave Absorption Properties from Large Magnetic Loss in Ni–Zn Ferrite

Highly effective electromagnetic (EM) wave absorber materials with strong reflection loss (RL) and a wide absorption bandwidth (EBW) in gigahertz (GHz) frequencies are crucial for advanced wireless applications and portable electronics. Traditional microwave absorbers lack magnetic loss and struggle with impedance matching, while ferrites are stable, exhibit excellent magnetic and dielectric losses, and offer better impedance matching. However, achieving the desired EBW in ferrites remains a challenge, necessitating further composition design. In this study, impedance matching is successfully enhanced and EBW in Ni–Zn ferrite is broadened by successive doping with Mn and Co , without incorporation of any polymer filler. It is found that Ni 0.4 Co 0.1 Zn 0.5 Fe 1.9 Mn 0.1 O 4 material exhibits exceptional EM wave absorption, with a maximum RL of −48.7 dB. It also featured a significant EBW of 10.8 GHz, maintaining a 90% absorption rate (RL < −10 dB) for a thickness of 4.5 mm. These outstanding properties result from substantial magnetic losses and favorable impedance matching. These findings represent a significant step forward in the development of microwave absorber materials, addressing EM wave pollution concerns within GHz frequencies, including the frequency band used in popular 5G technology.

Surface Charge and Nanoparticle Chromophore Coupling to Achieve Fast Exciton Quenching and Efficient Charge Separation in Photoacoustic Imaging (PAI) and Photothermal therapy (PTT)

Abstract An organic semiconductor nanoparticle (OSN) with surface charge strategy is proposed, which displays excellent photothermal conversion performance. The donor–acceptor hybrid organic semiconductor Y6 is selected as a photothermal chromophore into nanoparticle by self‐assembly, which affords long wavelength absorption, sub‐bandgap emission, and high photon‐to‐thermal conversion. Y6 in OSN adopts closed packing comparing to that in single crystal. The surface charge in OSN causes super‐quenching of the photon excitons, which enhances the nonradiative transition to improve photothermal effect. Lower energy level electronic states are created, which breaks up the bandgap limit and leads to long wavelength emission over 1100 nm. Photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging are applied successfully, indicating the success of the new methodology in designing photothermal conversion materials.

Enabling Deformable and Stretchable Batteries

Abstract Deformable energy storage devices are needed to power next‐generation wearable electronics that interface intimately with human skin. Currently, deformable energy storage devices demonstrate poor performance compared to their rigid lithium‐ion counterparts, forcing wearable manufacturers to design their devices around bulky battery compartments. However, technological advances to create deformable batteries at the component and device level have yielded continuous improvement in stretchable batteries over the last five years. In this Essay, the major strategies at the component and device level that have been successfully employed to create stretchable batteries are reviewed. The outstanding challenges facing deformable energy storage are also discussed, namely, energy density, packaging, delamination, device integration, and manufacturing. This Essay will give researchers who are interested in contributing to the development of deformable batteries a cursory understanding of the most successful strategies to date, and provide insights into the most important directions to pursue in the future.

Is selfing a reproductive assurance promoting polyploid establishment? Reduced fitness, leaky self‐incompatibility and lower inbreeding depression in neotetraploids

Premise Newly formed polyploids face significant obstacles to persistence and population establishment because of fitness costs of intercytotype mating. Selfing provides the opportunity to escape mate limitation, enabling production of new individuals and increasing the likelihood of fixation of new polyploid lineages. Still, association between self‐compatibility and polyploidy is not always clear. We compared self‐incompatibility and inbreeding depression in neotetraploids and their diploid progenitor to explore the direct effects of whole genome duplications on self‐incompatibility and the implications of ploidy‐driven changes for polyploid establishment. Methods Outcross and self‐pollinations were performed in diploids and synthetic neotetraploids of Jasione maritima var. maritima , and reproductive success was measured through fruit and seed production and seed germination. Self‐ and outcross offspring were grown under controlled conditions, and plant performance was measured through several fitness parameters. Results Neotetraploids showed an overall lower performance than diploids. Reproductive success was negatively affected by selfing in both cytotypes. However, greater variation in the expression of self‐incompatibility was observed in neotetraploids; additionally, developmental and physiological parameters were not affected by selfing on neotetraploids, with an overall similar fitness of outcrossed and selfed individuals, resulting in lower inbreeding depression indexes. Conclusions Neotetraploids might have benefited from selfing at initial stages after their formation. Genome duplications resulted in leaky self‐incompatibility, enabling the production of offspring under minority cytotype disadvantage with similar fitness as outcrossed offspring. Our results support theoretical assumptions that selfing might be important for neopolyploid establishment, although changes in self‐incompatibility might not be abrupt.

Solvated Nickel Complexes as Stoichiometric and Catalytic Perfluoroalkylation Agents**

Abstract The acetonitrile‐solvated [(MeCN)Ni(C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] − was prepared in order to compare and contrast its reactivity with the known [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] − towards organic electrophiles. Both [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] − and [(MeCN)Ni(C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] − successfully react with aryl iodonium and diazonium salts as well as alkynyl iodonium salts to give fluoroalkylated organic products. Electrochemical analysis of [(MeCN)Ni II (C 2 F 5 ) 3 ] − suggests that, upon electro‐oxidation to [(MeCN) n Ni III (C 2 F 5 ) 3 ], reductive homolysis of a perfluoroethyl radical occurs, with the concomitant formation of [(MeCN) 2 Ni II (C 2 F 5 ) 2 ]. Catalytic C−H trifluoromethylations of electron‐rich arenes were successfully achieved using either [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] − or the related [Ni(CF 3 ) 4 ] 2− . Stoichiometric reactions of the solvated nickel complexes reveal that “ligandless” nickel is exceptionally capable of serving as reservoir of CF 3 groups under catalytically relevant conditions.

Anion-tethered Single Lithium-ion Conducting Polyelectrolytes through UV-induced Free Radical Polymerization for Improved Morphological Stability of Lithium Metal Anodes

Single Li + ion conducting polyelectrolytes (SICs), which feature covalently tethered counter-anions along their backbone, have the potential to mitigate dendrite formation by reducing concentration polarization and preventing salt depletion. However, due to their low ionic conductivity and complicated synthetic procedure, the successful validation of these claimed advantages in lithium metal (Li 0 ) anode batteries remains limited. In this study, we fabricated a SIC electrolyte using a single-step UV polymerization approach. The resulting electrolyte exhibited a high Li + transference number (t + ) of 0.85 and demonstrated good Li + conductivity (6.3×10 -5 S/cm at room temperature), which is comparable to that of a benchmark dual ion conductor (DIC, 9.1×10 -5 S/cm). Benefitting from the high transference number of SIC, it displayed a three-fold higher critical current density (2.4 mA/cm 2 ) compared to DIC (0.8 mA/cm 2 ) by successfully suppressing concentration polarization-induced short-circuiting. Additionally, the t + significantly influenced the deposition behavior of Li0, with SIC yielding a uniform, compact, and mosaic-like morphology, while the low t + DIC resulted in a porous morphology with Li 0 whiskers. Using the SIC electrolyte, Li 0 ||LiFePO 4 cells exhibited stable operation for 4500 cycles with 70.5 % capacity retention at 22 °C.

Ambient Temperature Graphitization Based on Mechanochemical Synthesis

Graphite has become a critical material because of its high supply risk and essential applications in energy industries. Its present synthesis still relies on an energy-intensive thermal treatment pathway (Acheson process) at about 3000 °C. Herein, a mechanochemical approach is demonstrated to afford highly crystalline graphite nanosheets at ambient temperature. The key to the success of our methodology lies in the successive decomposition and rearrangement of a carbon nitride framework driven by a denitriding reaction in the presence of magnesium. The afforded graphite features high crystallinity, a high degree of graphitization, a thin nanosheet architecture, and a small flake size, which endow it with superior efficiency in lithium-ion batteries as an anode material in terms of rate capacity and cycle stability. Finally, the mild and cost-effective pathway used in this study could be a promising alternative for graphite production.

Predicting ecosystem metaphenome from community metagenome: A grand challenge for environmental biology

Abstract Elucidating how an organism's characteristics emerge from its DNA sequence has been one of the great triumphs of biology. This triumph has cumulated in sophisticated computational models that successfully predict how an organism's detailed phenotype emerges from its specific genotype. Inspired by that effort's vision and empowered by its methodologies, a grand challenge is described here that aims to predict the biotic characteristics of an ecosystem, its metaphenome, from nucleic acid sequences of all the species in its community, its metagenome. Meeting this challenge would integrate rapidly advancing abilities of environmental nucleic acids (eDNA and eRNA) to identify organisms, their ecological interactions, and their evolutionary relationships with advances in mechanistic models of complex ecosystems. Addressing the challenge would help integrate ecology and evolutionary biology into a more unified and successfully predictive science that can better help describe and manage ecosystems and the services they provide to humanity.

Survival of Immature Gopher Tortoises Recruited into a Translocated Population

Population manipulations such as translocation and head-starting are increasingly used as recovery tools for chelonians. However, evaluating success of individual projects can require decades of monitoring to detect population trends in these long-lived species. Furthermore, there are often few benchmarks from stable, unmanipulated populations against which to compare demographic rates, particularly for the immature stages. Here, we used 8 years of mark-recapture data to estimate apparent survival of immature gopher tortoises recruited into an introduced population of gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) first established on St. Catherines Island, Georgia, USA in 1987. During 2006 29 -2013, we conducted targeted trapping of immature gopher tortoises and compared survival of the hatchling, juvenile and subadult stages among treatments: 1) individuals released shortly after hatching from eggs obtained from gravid female founders (‘direct releases’); 2) individuals reared in captivity for 6-9 months following hatching (‘head-starts’); and 3) individuals first encountered as free-ranging, wild-recruited offspring (‘wild recruits’). Among the candidate models we examined, the best fit model included additive effects of tortoise stage and treatment, however, overlapping 95% credible intervals among treatments (CI) suggested that survival did not vary significantly among treatments. Annual apparent survival increased over the immature period, highlighting the importance of calculating separate estimates for the different immature stages. Across all treatments, the additive model estimated annual apparent survival probability to be 0.37 (CI: 0.25 40 – 0.48) for hatchlings, 0.71 (CI: 0.61 – 0.81) for juveniles, and 0.83 (CI: 0.74 – 0.94) for subadults. Our study, in combination with previous monitoring efforts at St. Catherines Island, provides strong evidence that the translocation and subsequent population augmentation efforts have been successful in establishing a robust population of gopher tortoises. Additionally, our results provide estimates of demographic rates for life stages that are poorly understood but critical to understanding population dynamics of this imperiled species.
