Computing Resonances Of Waveguide-To-Microstrip Transitions

Simplified mathematical model used to predict resonant frequencies of antipodal-finline waveguide-to-microstrip transitions. Makes it possible to place undesired resonances outside desired frequency band during design process; eliminates much of iteration in design process and thereby reduces both time and cost of design.

Design of a 60 GHz beam waveguide antenna positioner

A development model antenna positioner mechanism with an integral 60 GHz radio frequency beam waveguide is discussed. The system features a 2-ft diameter carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy antenna reflector and support structure, and a 2-degree-of-freedom elevation over azimuth mechanism providing hemispherical field of view. Emphasis is placed on the constraints imposed on the mechanism by the radio frequency subsystems and how they impacted the mechanical configuration.

CWG: A FORTRAN program for mutual coupling in a planar array of circular waveguide-fed apertures

A FORTRAN program which calculates the mutual coupling between circular apertures in a conductive plane is documented. The program is quite general in that the apertures do not have to be the same sizes, nor do they have to be polarized in the same direction. In addition, several waveguide modes (TE and/or TM) may be specified in the apertures and the mutual coupling between all combinations of apertures and modes will be calculated. The program also allows multiple layers of homogeneous dielectrics to be placed over the aperture array. Outside the layered region, one can specify either a homogeneous half-space, or a perfect reflecting surface.

A new analysis of beam-waveguide antennas considering the presence of the enclosure

Beam-waveguide (BWG) antennas provide multiple frequency band operations and other operational benefits for large ground-station antennas. Present design practices use diffraction analyses that ignore the presence of the BWG enclosure and may be inaccurate at lower frequency bands for ground-station antennas operating over multiple frequency bands. Introduced here is a new analysis approach that considers the presence of the BWG enclosure. Results based on the new analysis have revealed new understandings of the performance degradation mechanisms in a BWG antenna and have provided direction for potential design improvements.

Efficient 30-W, 140-MHz rf amplifier for CW CO2 waveguide laser excitation

Details of a 30-W, 140-MHz rf amplifier for CW CO2 waveguide laser excitation are presented. The amplifier delivers 30 W into a 50-Ohm load while requiring only 40 W of dc power from a 28-V supply and 100 mW of rf drive power for an overall efficiency of 75 percent. A coupling-starting network design theory is given that provides the initiation over voltage for the discharge plasma from an rf power source of limited output voltage capability. The network then matches the drive circuit to the new input impedance of the operating discharge without any adjustments. This design theory applies to the whole class of networks whose losses can be approximated by a loss conductance in parallel with the gas discharge.

Modeling of some coplanar waveguide discontinuities

Presented are lumped equivalent circuit models for several coplaar waveguide discontinuities such as an open circuit, a series gap, and a symmetric step, and their element values as a function of the discontinuity physical dimensions. The model element values are de-embedded from measured S parameters. The frequency dependence of the effective dielectric constant is measured and compared to computed values.

Epoxies Bond Waveguides To Flanges

Each waveguide/flange joint made with conductive adhesive and structural adhesive. New two-adhesive joints overcome many of disadvantages of dip-brazed joints, including damage caused by heat of brazing process, corrosion of joints by brazing salts retained in them, cracks in joints, weakening of waveguide material and limitation to use of aluminum alloys, which are only ones dip-brazed. Flange machined slightly oversize and beveled to accommodate structural and conductive adhesives.

Performance effects of tie-truss modifications for a 70-meter centerline beam waveguide antenna

The elevation-axis tie truss of the 70-m antennas would have to be modified to accommodate a centerline beam waveguide. To accomplish this, the center section of the tie truss has to be altered, causing a change in the tie-truss compliance and affecting structural performance. Even with the center section completely removed, the worst-case rms pathlength error due to gravity load is increased from 0.025 to only 0.030 inches. Using a simple postprocessor technique, the effects of modifying the compliance can be predicted without resorting to multiple and costly re-analyses of large finite-element models on a mainframe computer.

Coplanar waveguide discontinuities for P-I-N diode switches and filter applications

A full wave space domain integral equation (SDIE) analysis of coplanar waveguide (CPW) two port discontinuities is presented. An experimental setup to measure the S-parameters of such discontinuities is described. Experimental and theoretical results for CPW realizations of pass-band and stop-band filters are presented. The S-parameters of such structures are plotted in the frequency range 5 to 25 GHz.

Design and performance analysis of the DSS-13 beam waveguide antenna

A new 34 m research and development antenna is currently being constructed prior to introducing beam waveguide (BWG) antennas and Ka-band (32 GHz) frequencies into the NASA/JPL Deep Space Network. The new 34 m antenna, fed with either a center or bypass BWG, will lose less than 0.2 dB (excluding surface root mean square and mirror misalignment losses), as compared with a standard-fed Cassegrain antenna a X- (8.4 GHz) and Ka-bands. The antenna is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed July 1990. Phase 1 of the project is for independent X- and Ka-band receive-only tests. Phase 2 of the project is for simultaneous S- (2.3 GHz) and X-band or X- and Ka-band operation, and the design is currently under way.

Reflector spillover loss of an open-ended rectangular and circular waveguide feed

An important and frequently used parameter in the design of a feed for a reflector antenna is the spillover loss. A set of spillover curves is presented for several common feeds, namely circular waveguides with TE11 or TE21 excitations, rectangular guides for the monopulse application, etc. The difference between two common methods of normalizing the feed input power is also discussed.

Constitutive parameter de-embedding using inhomogeneously-filled rectangular waveguides with longitudinal section modes

Constitutive parameter extraction from S parameter data using a rectangular waveguide whose cross section is partially filled with a material sample as opposed to being completely filled was examined. One reason for studying a partially filled geometry is to analyze the effect of air gaps between the sample and fixture for the extraction of constitutive parameters. Air gaps can occur in high temperature parameter measurements when the sample was prepared at room temperature. Single port and two port measurement approaches to parameter extraction are also discussed.

A portable Ka-band front-end test package for beam-waveguide antenna performance evaluation. Part 1: Design and ground tests

A unique experimental method was used to test the beam waveguide (BWG) antenna at Deep Space Station (DDS) 13 in the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow, California. The methodology involved the use of portable test packages to make measurements of operating noise temperatures and antenna efficiencies (as functions of antenna pointing angles) at the Cassegrain focal point and the final focal point located in a subterranean pedestal room. Degradations caused by the BWG mirror systems were determined by making comparisons of the measured parameters at the two focal points of the antenna. Previous articles were concerned with the design, performance characteristics, and test results obtained with an X-band test package operating at 32 GHz. Noise temperature measurement results are presented for the Ka-band test package in an on-the-ground test configuration.

A portable Ka-band front-end test package for beam-waveguide antenna performance evaluation. Part 2: Tests on the antenna

In part one of this article, a description was given of a Ka-band test package developed to enable testing of the Deep Space Station (DDS) 13 34-m beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna at 32 GHz. Test results were given for the Ka-band test package in an on-the-ground test configuration. This article is a companion article concerned with Ka-band test results for the test package in an on-the-antenna test configuration. Included are Ka-band zenith noise-temperature values, tipping-curve data, and subreflector test results obtained at the Cassegrain focal point, as well as at the final BWG focal point (located in a subterranean pedestal room). Test results show that, through the use of the Ka-band test package, the BWG antenna performance was successfully evaluated at Ka-band. The Ka-band test package operated well in all of the different antenna test configurations.
