Classification of River Catchments in the Contiguous United States: Code, Dataset, Similarity Patterns, and Resulting Classes

This dataset serves as supplementary information for the paper by Ciulla F. and Varadharajan C. A Network Approach for Multiscale Catchment Classification using Traits (see reference 1). It contains environmental and physical catchment traits, such as temperatures, precipitation, land use and human interference, from 9067 sites across the contiguous United States (CONUS). The purpose of this dataset is to provide information for a better trait-based categorization of river catchments in the CONUS using networks as an analytical tool. The traits variables match the ones present in the GAGES-II dataset and the preprocessing steps are described in the Methods section (processed_dataset.csv). Additionally we include the topologies (nodes, edges and clusters, also referred as classes) of the catchment network and traits network generated by said dataset (csv and json files). A series of tables support the information carried by the network providing more detailed descriptions of cluster components (SI1.pdf). A summary of all the plots of clusters of catchments with at least 50 nodes is provided (SI2.pdf). The characteristic traits for each cluster of catchments is presented as z-score (traits_categories_zscores_per_catchment_class.csv). The link to the hydrological behavior of clusters of catchments is displayed by boxplots, each describing a particular river discharge index (SI3.pdf). Both csv and json files can be read by common text editors but the data contained into them can be better handled using programming languages like python and database oriented libraries like pandas. Pdf files can be read by any pdf reader software.[02-23-2024] Update: The code and datasets necessary to reproduce the results of the study are available as a zipped repository (code_datasets_catchments_similarity.zip).

Model-ready benchmarks for NPP, ANPP, litter fluxes, and recruitment into the 1 cm dbh size class

The intended use of this dataset is to serve as an observational benchmark to evaluate model predictions of NPP, ANPP, litter fluxes, and recruitment at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. This dataset contains four CSV files and one text file. “Benchmarks-NPP-ANPP-R-L.csv” provides estimates of annual ecosystem-level reproductive litter flux (R), leaf litter flux (L), aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), and net primary productivity (NPP) for 61 field plots throughout tropical, temperate, and boreal forest biomes. An additional 499 plots (n = 550) include estimates of just R, L, and R/L. Each row reports a distinct set of estimates for one sampling interval at one plot. “Metadata-Benchmarks-NPP-ANPP-R-L.csv” contains field descriptions for all data fields in “Benchmarks-NPP-ANPP-R-L.csv”. “References-Benchmarks-NPP-ANPP-R-L.txt” contains full references to the original studies used to produce the observations at each plot included in the data. “Benchmarks-Recruitment.csv” provides estimates of species-level recruitment rates into the 1 cm dbh size class at four CTFS-ForestGeo sites using methods that account for unobserved mortality of new recruits between census intervals (Kohyama et al., 2018). “Metadata-Benchmarks-Recruitment.csv” contains field descriptions for all data fields in “Benchmarks-Recruitment.csv”.

Commercial Electronic Part Class Definitions

Electronic parts used in Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) applications have varying pedigrees. Understanding the differences among these "part classes" will better enable Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC) and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL, or Sandia) to effectively manage factors such as risk, effort, cost, etc. across all functional areas which have a shared interest in the definition and acquisition process. Regardless of the pedigree and complexity, all parts are expected to meet necessary quality and reliability requirements. This activity has been conducted as part of the COTS Transformation Initiative (CTI).

Assessing the ASME Section III, Division 5, Class A Primary Load Design Rules Against Creep Notch Effects

This report assesses the ASME Section III, Division 5, Subsection HB, Subpart B rules covering the design and construction of high temperature Class A nuclear reactor components for their robustness against creep notch effects. The creep notch effect combines the effect of multiaxial stresses on material creep deformation and damage. This report considers both effects, including the potential for creep mechanism shifts affecting the extrapolation of design data from high stress, short-time experimental data to low stress, long time operating component conditions. The report summarizes the history of and literature on multiaxial creep and surveys the current ASME design rules dealing with multiaxial effects. The report then describes the results of two dedicated numerical studies, one assessing the robustness of the ASME rules against uncertainty in extrapolating from uniaxial creep test data to multiaxial component conditions and a second study examining the potential effects of a mechanism shift from high stress, dislocation-mediated creep to diffusion-dominated creep at lower stresses. The final conclusion of the report is that the ASME rules adequately guard against multiaxial creep failure, though there are several aspects of the Code that could be optimized to provide less over-conservative design predictions or to provide a more consistent design margin as a function of temperature and stress. In a few areas, particularly the potential for mechanism shifts outside the currently-available experimental data, the Code rules should be revaluated as additional experimental data and new modeling and simulation results become available
