Compact table-tilting mechanism

Optical components are oriented precisely by motorized device for manipulating objects attached to plane tilt table. Mechanism is compact, simple, and has low backlash. It consists of drive motor, rotatable disk, rigid link, and table. Motor rotates about vertical axis, and motion is converted through disk and rigid link to rotation of table about perpendicular axis.

Compact infrared detector

Broadband IR detector integrated into compact package for pollution monitoring and weather prediction is small, highly responsive, and immune to high noise. Sensing material is transparent sheet metalized with reflecting coating and overcoated with black material on same side. Pulse produced by chopping of infrared source beam creates transient "thermal lens" that temporarily defocuses laser beam probe. Detector monitoring beam measures defocusing which parallels infrared intensity.

Comparison tests and experimental compliance calibration of the proposed standard round compact plane strain fracture toughness specimen

Standard round specimen fracture test results compared satisfactorily with results from standard rectangular compact specimens machined from the same material. The location of the loading pin holes was found to provide adequate strength in the load bearing region for plane strain fracture toughness testing. Excellent agreement was found between the stress intensity coefficient values obtained from compliance measurements and the analytic solution proposed for inclusion in the standard test method. Load displacement measurements were made using long armed displacement gages and hollow loading cylinders. Gage points registered on the loading hole surfaces through small holes in the walls of the loading cylinders.

Stress-intensity factors and crack-opening displacements for round compact specimens

A two dimensional, boundary collocation stress analysis was used to analyze various round compact specimens. The influence of the round external boundary and of pin-loaded holes on stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements was determined as a function of crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios. A wide-range equation for the stress intensity factors was developed. Equations for crack-surface displacements and load-point displacements were also developed. In addition, stress intensity factors were calculated from compliance methods to demonstrate that load-displacement records must be made at the loading points and not along the crack line for crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios less than about 0.4.

Spectral formation in compact X-ray sources

A method is described for calculating the transfer of X-rays through gas that is optically thick to Compton scattering. The method permits the simultaneous solution of the radiation-dominated temperature and ionization structure of the medium as well as the effects of incoherent Compton scattering of photons. Self-consistent results are obtained for idealized models of compact X-ray sources, represented as point sources of continuum X-rays surrounded by spherical shells of gas, demonstrating the range of spectral features that might result from such optically thick transfer. Some implications for the analysis of X-ray spectra of galactic X-ray sources are discussed.

X-ray emission from compact groups of galaxies

The existence of very compact groups, or 'poor clusters,' of galaxies as a category of X-ray source is reported. By analogy with X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies, it is assumed that the extended X-ray emission is due to thermal bremsstrahlung from hot gas in the groups. The derived X-ray temperatures, luminosities, and sizes are similar to those for X-ray emitting, rich clusters of galaxies. It is inferred that these groups are in a late evolutionary stage because of the presence of a dominant galaxy, the absence of spiral galaxies, and the short cooling time inferred for 2A 0335 + 096.

Spontaneous formation of knots in relativistic flows - A model for variability in compact synchrotron sources

A model is proposed in which regions of enhanced synchrotron emission are formed via radiative thermal instabilities in relativistic flows. A perturbed volume in which the magnetic field is enhanced by a few tens of a percent relative to the steady value collapses due to the increased cooling rate and consequent loss in pressure. The collapse further increases the magnetic field, leading to even shorter radiative lifetimes. The instability progresses in this way until either the external electron pressure is balanced by the perturbed magnetic pressure or the overall expansion of the flow becomes important. A fluid-dynamical treatment of the instability is performed, and the results are shown to apply to flux variations and formation of knots in the relativistic flows which are thought to occur in quasars and active galactic nuclei. The knots possess the same kinematic properties as the collimated flow and can thus be responsible for the apparent superluminal motions observed in compact radio sources.

Compact Ion Source for Mass Spectrometers

Cyclotron-resonance device uses miniature components and permanent magnet for small size, low weight, and low cost. Gas molecules are ionized by electrons from hot filament. Magnetic field, acting with electrostatic drift field, causes ions to move in circles with a superimposed drift perpendicular to both fields, toward the exit. Compact source can be used for studying ion-molecule reactions by ion cyclotron-resonance methods in conventional mass spectrometer with either magnetic sector or quadrupole sector.

Optimal tooth numbers for compact standard spur gear sets

The design of a standard gear mesh is treated with the objective of minimizing the gear size for a given ratio, pinion torque, and allowable tooth strength. Scoring, pitting fatigue, bending fatigue, and the kinematic limits of contact ratio and interference are considered. A design space is defined in terms of the number of teeth on the pinion and the diametral pitch. This space is then combined with the objective function of minimum center distance to obtain an optimal design region. This region defines the number of pinion teeth for the most compact design. The number is a function of the gear ratio only. A design example illustrating this procedure is also given.

Blue compact dwarf galaxies. I - Neutral hydrogen observations of 115 galaxies

HI observations are reported for a sample of 115 blue compact dwarf (M sub B greater than approximately -18) galaxies or 'extragalactic H II regions' chosen mostly from the objective prism surveys of Markarian (1967-1974) and Haro (1956), with a few objects from Zwicky (1971) and other investigators. Ninety-three galaxies are detected. H I profiles, neutral hydrogen masses, total masses, and all available optical data are given for the 115 galaxies in a consistent and homogeneous system and in a useful format for statistical studies. The data are used in a companion paper to study the stochastic mode of star formation in galaxies.

Compact magnetograph

A compact magnetograph system based on solid Fabry-Perot interferometers as the spectral isolation elements was studied. The theory of operation of several Fabry-Perot systems, the suitability of various magnetic lines, signal levels expected for different modes of operation, and the optimal detector systems were investigated. The requirements that the lack of a polarization modulator placed upon the electronic signal chain was emphasized. The PLZT modulator was chosen as a satisfactory component with both high reliability and elatively low voltage requirements. Thermal control, line centering and velocity offset problems were solved by a Fabry-Perot configuration.

Compact radio source 1413 + 135 is a far-IR extragalactic object

The radio source 1413 + 135 is shown to be one of the strongest known emitters of millimeter radiation. The energy distribution of this object, measured between meter and X-ray wavelengths, reveals that most of the power emitted by this object comes out at millimeter and far-IR wavelengths. If the emission at 1 mm is due to incoherent synchrotron radiation, then the source must be very compact, with a size around 25 micron arc sec, and contain a magnetic field larger than 10 G. The steep spectral index in the near-IR is attributed to a high-energy cutoff in the distribution of synchrotron emitting electrons at a Lorentz factor of approximately 300.

The evolution of highly compact binary stellar systems

A new theoretical treatment of the evolution of highly compact binary systems is presented. The evolution is calculated until almost the entire mass of the secondary has been transferred to the primary or lost from the system. It is assumed that gravitational radiation from the system is the cause of mass transfer. It is found that the structure of the mass-losing star can be approximated by an n = 3/2 polytrope, and as a result a relatively large number of different cases can be explored and some general conclusions drawn. An explanation is found for the existence of a cutoff in the orbital period distribution among the cataclysmic variables and light is shed upon the possible generic relationships among cataclysmic variables, the low-mass X-ray binaries, and the spectrally soft transient X-ray sources.
