Technical Basis Update for the Design Life Extension of the SAVY-4000® Series of Containers

This technical basis update focuses on the design life of the SAVY-4000® (hereafter “SAVY”) series of nuclear material storage container (e.g., used to store, transport, and handle special nuclear material outside of a glovebox), previously approved under DOE Manual 441.1-1, Nuclear Material Packaging Manual. The SAVY is approved for storing all authorized contents for a period of 15 years. The lifetime extension technical basis is established on the compiled technical data from the on-going SAVY and Hagan surveillance programs, destructive analysis results, accelerated aging studies, and performance testing, in line with the regulatory rigor of DOE M441.1-1.

Studying f-Electron Contributions in Thorium and Uranium Containing Molecules

The pure rotational spectra of several actinide-containing compounds have been improved upon and, in two cases, been recorded for the first time. The diatomic molecules HfS and ThS have been studied in their ground electronic states but high vibrationally excited states. The results have yielded very accurate locations of the minima of the potential energy curves. The asymmetric molecules OThS and UO2S have been prepared by laser ablation synthesis and their pure rotational spectra recorded for the first time. Precise information pertinent to the geometric and electronic structure of these molecules has been obtained and is compared with other, newly recorded and related species such as OCeS.

Pressurized Water Reactor Containment Aerosol Settling Rate for Accident Source Terms

This report documents results from MELCOR calculations performed to determine the aerosol settling rate in pressurized water reactor containments in support of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.183, “Alternative Radiological Source Terms for Evaluating Design Basis Accidents at Nuclear Power Reactors,” which is the methodology for determining alternate source terms in design basis accidents at nuclear power reactors.

Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration

This report presents the research, design, and implementation of a Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration, conducted during my internship assignment. The project focused on developing a modular signal processing sys- tem capable of performing baseline correction, droop compensation, and real- time data communication for beam diagnostic signals. Using Redis as a message broker and configuration manager, the system ensures modularity, scalability, and efficient inter-process communication. Signal correction algorithms, such as Asymmetric Least Squares (ALS) baseline smoothing and a numerical droop correction approach, were implemented and tested using Linac beam data. The results confirm that this system improves signal fidelity and supports real-time analysis requirements, offering valuable contributions to the field of beam instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

Development of Magnesium Borane Containing Solutions of Furans and Pyrroles as Reversible Liquid Hydrogen Carriers (Final Technical Report)

The objective of this project was the development of a two-way liquid hydrogen carrier having a greater energy efficiency and lower delivery costs than either existing hydrogen carriers or conventional compressed H 2 gas transport technology. It was hypothesized that a hydrogen carrier consisting of solutions of furans and pyrroles containing Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer complex catalyst, would have more than twice the volumetric available hydrogen density of the conventional two-way liquid hydrogen carrier, methylcyclohexane. Most notably the envisioned liquid hydrogen carrier would: 1) maintain high product selectivity through multiple cycles of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation; and 2) undergo rapid dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation. The project was specifically aimed at the demonstration of at least one LOHC solution of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer catalyst that releases ≥ 50 g H 2 /L at ≤ 200 °C upon dehydrogenation and undergoes ≥ 25% rehydrogenation under 100 atm of H 2 at ≤ 200 °C.

Laser Spectroscopy of Exotic Atoms and Molecules Containing Octupole-Deformed Nuclei

This project investigated the nuclear, atomic, and molecular structure of exotic atoms and molecules containing actinide isotopes. These short-lived radioactive systems are challenging to produce and study in the laboratory, yet they offer unique opportunities for fundamental science. These nuclei are predicted to exhibit pear-shaped (octupole) deformation, a rare collective nuclear behavior that dramatically enhances their sensitivity to fundamental physics phenomena such as time-reversal- and parity-violating effects. Such enhancements make them ideal probes for exploring open questions in our understanding of the universe such as the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry of the universe. To realize these measurements, the project led the development of a new laser spectroscopy experiment at MIT, and later commissioned at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University: the Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy Experiment (RISE). RISE combines the spectroscopic precision of collinear laser spectroscopy with the sensitivity of particle-detection techniques, enabling measurements of rare isotopes produced at rates as low as a few ions per second. The beamline was designed, built, and installed, and was successfully commissioned at FRIB during the grant period. RISE is now a permanent capability of the FRIB facility, and has produced several results on the study of rare atoms and molecules for nuclear structure and fundamental symmetries. In parallel with the FRIB program, the project contributed to the first precision laser-spectroscopy measurements of short-lived radioactive molecules. Working with international collaborators at CERN's ISOLDE facility, the team conducted pioneering experiments on radium monofluoride (RaF) and actinium monofluoride (AcF). The results from this work have been published in major journals of science, including Nature, Science, Nature Physics, Nature Communications, and Physical Review Letters. These findings have guided future experiments on the laser cooling of radioactive molecules, opening a new platform for precision tests of fundamental symmetries.

Structural Characterization and Dynamics of AdhE Ultrastructures from Clostridium thermocellum Show a Containment Strategy for Toxic Intermediates

Clostridium thermocellum, a cellulolytic thermophilic anaerobe, is considered by many to be a prime candidate for the realization of consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) and is known as an industry standard for biofuel production. C. thermocellum is among the best biomass degraders identified to date in nature and produces ethanol as one of its main products. Many studies have helped increase ethanol titers in this microbe; however, ethanol production using C. thermocellum is still not economically viable. Therefore, a better understanding of its ethanol synthesis pathway is required. The main pathway for ethanol production in C. thermocellum involves the bifunctional aldehyde-alcohol dehydrogenase (AdhE). To better understand the function of the C. thermocellum AdhE, we used cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to obtain a 3.28 A structure of the AdhE complex. This high-resolution structure, in combination with molecular dynamics simulations, provides insight into the substrate channeling of the toxic intermediate acetaldehyde, indicates the potential role of C. thermocellum AdhE to regulate activity and cofactor pools, and establishes a basis for future engineering studies. The containment strategy found in this enzyme offers a template that could be replicated in other systems where toxic intermediates need to be sequestered to increase the production of valuable biochemicals.
