Water vapor diffusion membrane development

A total of 18 different membranes were procured, characterized, and tested in a modified bench-scale vapor diffusion water reclamation unit. Four membranes were selected for further studies involving membrane fouling. Emphasis was placed on the problem of flux decline due to membrane fouling. This is discussed in greater details under "Summary and Discussion on Membrane Fouling Studies" presented in pages 47-51. The system was also investigated for low temperature application on wash-water where the permeated water is not recovered but vented into space vacuum.

Gamma-ray astrophysics - A new look at the universe

Gamma-ray astronomy, which may be defined to include the spectral region from above 100 keV to about 1000 GeV, permits investigation of the most energetic photons originating in the Galaxy and beyond. These observations provide the most direct means of studying the largest transfers of energy occurring in astrophysical processes, including the dynamic effects of the energetic charged cosmic-ray particles, element synthesis, and particle acceleration. Further, gamma-rays suffer negligible absorption or scattering as they travel in straight paths. Hence they may survive billions of years. Studies of the spatial, temporal, and energy distribution of cosmic gamma-rays will, therefore, provide fundamental new information for resolving some of the major problems in astrophysics today. Attention is given to the gamma-ray observations of the solar system, stellar objects, diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galaxy, other galaxies and cosmology, and future prospects.

Pseudospectral method for problems with nonperiodic boundary conditions

The capability of the pseudospectral technique and the time integration scheme for the time dependent nonperiodic problem is demonstrated. Significant improvements are shown in the accuracy for calculation of the two dimensional time dependent advection diffusion equation. The pseudospectral method is a viable alternative to the finite difference methods for the equation of the spatial deriviations.

Calculation of three-dimensional turbulent subsonic flows in transition ducts

A method for computing three-dimensional turbulent subsonic flow in curved ducts is being developed. A set of tube-like surface oriented coordinates is employed for a general class of geometries applicable to subsonic diffusers with offset bends. The geometric formulation is complex and no previous treatment of this class of viscous flow problems is known to the authors. The duct centerline is a space curve specified by piecewise polynomials. A Frenet frame is located on the centerline at each axial location. The cross sections are described by superellipses imbedded in the Frenet frame. Duct surfaces are also coordinate surfaces, which greatly simplifies the boundary conditions. The resulting coordinates are nonorthogonal. An approximate set of governing equations is employed for viscous flows having strong flow in a primary flow direction. The derivation is coordinate invariant and the resulting equations are expressed in tensor form. These equations are solved by an efficient alternating direction implicit (ADI) method. This numerical method is generally stable and permits solution in difficult geometries using the general tensor formulation.

A numerical treatment of geodynamic viscous flow problems involving the advection of material interfaces

Effective numerical treatment of multicomponent viscous flow problems involving the advection of sharp interfaces between materials of differing physical properties requires correction techniques to prevent spurious diffusion and dispersion. We develop a particular algorithm, based on modern shock-capture techniques, employing a two-step nonlinear method. The first step involves the global application of a high-order upwind scheme to a hyperbolic advection equation used to model the distribution of distinct material components in a flow field. The second step is corrective and involves the application of a global filter designed to remove dispersion errors that result from the advection of discontinuities (e.g., material interfaces) by high-order, minimally dissipative schemes. The filter introduces no additional diffusion error. Nonuniform viscosity across a material interface is allowed for by the implementation of a compositionally weighted-inverse interface viscosity scheme. The combined method approaches the optimal accuracy of modern shock-capture techniques with a minimal increase in computational time and memory. A key advantage of this method is its simplicity to incorporate into preexisting codes be they finite difference, element, or volume of two or three dimensions.

Numerical Simulations of High-Speed Chemically Reacting Flow

The Essentially NonOscillatory (ENO) shock-capturing scheme for the solution of hyperbolic equations is extended to solve a system of coupled conservation equations governing two-dimensional, time-dependent, compressible chemically reacting flow with full chemistry. The thermodynamic properties of the mixture are modeled accurately, and stiff kinetic terms are separated from the fluid motion by a fractional step algorithm. The methodology is used to study the concept of shock-induced mixing and combustion, a process by which the interaction of a shock wave with a jet of low-density hydrogen fuel enhances mixing through streamwise vorticity generation. Test cases with and without chemical reaction are explored here. Our results indicate that, in the temperature range examined, vorticity generation as well as the distribution of atomic species do not change significantly with the introduction of a chemical reaction and subsequent heat release. The actual diffusion of hydrogen is also relatively unaffected by the reaction process. This suggests that the fluid mechanics of this problem may be successfully decoupled from the combustion processes, and that computation of the mixing problem (without combustion chemistry) can elucidate much of the important physical features of the flow.

Comparison of Several Numerical Methods for Simulation of Compressible Shear Layers

An investigation is conducted on several numerical schemes for use in the computation of two-dimensional, spatially evolving, laminar variable-density compressible shear layers. Schemes with various temporal accuracies and arbitrary spatial accuracy for both inviscid and viscous terms are presented and analyzed. All integration schemes use explicit or compact finite-difference derivative operators. Three classes of schemes are considered: an extension of MacCormack's original second-order temporally accurate method, a new third-order variant of the schemes proposed by Rusanov and by Kutier, Lomax, and Warming (RKLW), and third- and fourth-order Runge-Kutta schemes. In each scheme, stability and formal accuracy are considered for the interior operators on the convection-diffusion equation U(sub t) + aU(sub x) = alpha U(sub xx). Accuracy is also verified on the nonlinear problem, U(sub t) + F(sub x) = 0. Numerical treatments of various orders of accuracy are chosen and evaluated for asymptotic stability. Formally accurate boundary conditions are derived for several sixth- and eighth-order central-difference schemes. Damping of high wave-number data is accomplished with explicit filters of arbitrary order. Several schemes are used to compute variable-density compressible shear layers, where regions of large gradients exist.

Double Diffusive Convection in Materials Processing

A great number of crystals grown in space are plagued by convective motions which contribute to structural flaws. The character of these instabilities is not well understood but is associated with density variations in the presence of residual gravity (g-jitter). As a specific example, past HgCdTe crystal growth space experiments by Lehoczky and co-workers indicate radial compositional asymmetry in the grown crystals. In the case of HgCdTe the rejected component into the melt upon solidification is HgTe which is denser than the melt. The space grown crystals indicate the presence of three dimensional flow with the heavier HgTe-rich material clearly aligned with the residual gravity (0.55-1.55 micro g) vector. This flow stems from double-diffusive convection, namely, thermal and solutal buoyancy driven flow in the melt. The study of double-diffusive convection is multi-faceted and rather vast. In our investigation, we seek to focus on one specific aspect of this discipline that is of direct relevance to materials processing especially crystal growth, namely, the side ways heating regime. This problem has been widely studied, both experimentally and numerically, in the context of solar ponds wherein the system is characterized by a linear salt (solutal) gradient with an imposed lateral temperature gradient. The induced flow instabilities arise from the wide disparity between the fluid thermal diffusivity and the solute diffusivity. The extension of the analysis to practical crystal growth applications has however not been rigorously made and understood. One subtle but important difference in crystal growth systems is the fact that die system solute gradient is non-linear (typically exponential). Besides, the crystal growth problem has the added complexities of solidification, both lateral and longitudinal thermal gradients and segregation phenomena in systems where binary and ternary compounds are being grown. This paper treats the side ways heating problem alone in a model fluid system. Results from detailed numerical calculations, mainly two dimensional are provided. The interactions between a non-linear solute gradient and an imposed transverse thermal gradient are investigated. The buoyancy effects are treated in the traditional Boussinesq approximation and also in a more complete density formulation to address recent concerns of the first approach especially in simulations of the system response in a reduced gravity environment. Detailed flow, temperature and solute field plots along with heat and mass transfer results are presented in the paper. Implications to practical crystal growth systems as discerned from the modeling results are also explored and reported.

Computer simulation of impurity diffusion in silicon, part 1

The elementary classical models for idealized diffusion conditions are described, and the principles are then used in developing more realistic models. The practical models require some type of numerical analysis. The numerical techniques are outlined and details concerning their implementation are given. Some results are presented which were obtained with the computer programs implementing the numerical techniques with implicit and explicit methods. Special problems of impurity-rich interlayers forming between an oxide and silicon are considered. A set of computed curves for sheet resistance, junction depth, and oxide thickness for different diffusion schedules is included.

Inverse atmospheric radiative transfer problems - A nonlinear minimization search method of solution

The paper studies the inversion of the radiative transfer equation describing the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atmospheric aerosols. The interaction can be considered as the propagation in the aerosol medium of two light beams: the direct beam in the line-of-sight attenuated by absorption and scattering, and the diffuse beam arising from scattering into the viewing direction, which propagates more or less in random fashion. The latter beam has single scattering and multiple scattering contributions. In the former case and for single scattering, the problem is reducible to first-kind Fredholm equations, while for multiple scattering it is necessary to invert partial integrodifferential equations. A nonlinear minimization search method, applicable to the solution of both types of problems has been developed, and is applied here to the problem of monitoring aerosol pollution, namely the complex refractive index and size distribution of aerosol particles.

The problem of cooling the cold Io torus

Two models are developed for the transport of ions inward from Io's orbit, the first using the assumption that radial diffusion is the dominant transport mechanism while the second uses a combination of diffusive and convective transport. The models include thermal and number density transport, radiation, ionization and pickup of local neutrals, recombination, charge exchange, and Coulomb interactions. It is found that pure diffusive transport can account for the dramatic inward depletion of the torus only by invoking recombination or by postulating a massive increase in the production rate of torus ions sometime prior to the Voyager mission. Recombination is determined to be far too slow to be the cause of the observed density decrease inside of Io. The model combining convection and diffusion is shown to reasonably match the data, but only if a diffusion coefficient 100 times less than that derived from Pioneer observations is used. In addition, it is shown that the Pioneer derived diffusion rate combined with Voyager temperature and density measurements indicate a large nonradiative sink of energy in the inner torus.

A cubic spline approximation for problems in fluid mechanics

A cubic spline approximation is presented which is suited for many fluid-mechanics problems. This procedure provides a high degree of accuracy, even with a nonuniform mesh, and leads to an accurate treatment of derivative boundary conditions. The truncation errors and stability limitations of several implicit and explicit integration schemes are presented. For two-dimensional flows, a spline-alternating-direction-implicit method is evaluated. The spline procedure is assessed, and results are presented for the one-dimensional nonlinear Burgers' equation, as well as the two-dimensional diffusion equation and the vorticity-stream function system describing the viscous flow in a driven cavity. Comparisons are made with analytic solutions for the first two problems and with finite-difference calculations for the cavity flow.

Vertical distribution of vibrational energy of molecular nitrogen in a stable auroral red arc and its effect on ionospheric electron densities

Previous solutions of the problem of the distribution of vibrationally excited molecular nitrogen in the thermosphere have either assumed a Boltzmann distribution and considered diffusion as one of the loss processes or solved for the energy level populations and neglected diffusion. Both of the previous approaches are combined by solving the time dependent continuity equations, including the diffusion process, for the first six energy levels of molecular nitrogen for conditions in the thermosphere corresponding to a stable auroral red arc. The primary source of molecular nitrogen excitation was subexcitation, and inelastic collisions between thermal electrons and molecular nitrogen. The reaction rates for this process were calculated from published cross section calculations. The loss processes for vibrational energy were electron and atomic oxygen quenching and vibrational energy exchange. The coupled sets of nonlinear, partial differential equations were solved numerically by employing finite difference equations.

Further investigation of the spontaneous and evoked activity of the primary neurons of statoreceptors (and other receptors) of the labyrinth of the bullfrog before, during and after an extended period of weightlessness, including alternative intervals of artificial gravity

Vestibular neuron activity was examined by studying nerve stimulation and evoked response. A cooling element, applied to the nerve consisted of a silver hook through which a coolant fluid flowed. Temperature changes were recorded via microtermistors on an eight channel brush recorder, together with response. Diffusion of the cooling effect was measured, recovery time was assessed, and the nerve was then studied hystologically and ultrastructurally. Problems in frog preparation were discussed along with problems in maintaining healthy specimens and bacteria controlled aquaria.

The use of optimization techniques to design controlled diffusion compressor blading

A method for automating compressor blade design using numerical optimization, and applied to the design of a controlled diffusion stator blade row is presented. A general purpose optimization procedure is employed, based on conjugate directions for locally unconstrained problems and on feasible directions for locally constrained problems. Coupled to the optimizer is an analysis package consisting of three analysis programs which calculate blade geometry, inviscid flow, and blade surface boundary layers. The optimizing concepts and selection of design objective and constraints are described. The procedure for automating the design of a two dimensional blade section is discussed, and design results are presented.

Silicon solar cell process development, fabrication, and analysis

Work has progressed in fabrication and characterization of solar cells from ubiquitous crystallization process (UCP) wafers and LASS ribbons. Gettering tests applied to UCP wafers made little change on their performance compared with corresponding baseline data. Advanced processes such as shallow junction (SJ), back surface field (BSF), and multilayer antireflection (MLAR) were also applied. While BSF by Al paste had shunting problems, cells with SJ and BSF by evaporated Al, and MLAR did achieve 14.1% AMI on UCP silicon. The study of LASS material was very preliminary. Only a few cells with SJ, BSR, (no BSF) and MLAR were completed due to mechanical yield problems after lapping the material. Average efficiency was 10.7% AMI with 13.4% AMI for CZ controls. Relatively high minority carrier diffusion lengths were obtained. The lower than expected Jsc could be partially explained by low active area due to irregular sizes.

Monte-Carlo model of pitch-angle scattering in solar cosmic ray events

Monte Carlo simulations of the propagation of solar cosmic-rays in interplanetary space are reported, including the effects of pitch-angle scattering and adiabatic focusing. Time intensity profiles agree well with the corresponding spatial diffusion approximation for models close to those used by Gombosi and Owens (1980). Monte Carlo simulations of the same model problem yield results that disagree with those of Gombosi and Owens, and the most likely possible source of error in the Monte Carlo simulation is considered to be in the region near the 90 deg pitch angle where the finite step size introduces certain inconsistencies.
