Impedance-Based State-of-Health Estimation for Lithium-Ion Battery Management Systems

This paper discusses an impedance-based state-of-health (SOH) estimation for lithium-ion battery management systems. Features obtained from the Nyquist plot of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are utilized to estimate the SOH. Two commercial lithium-ion batteries were aged (cycled) in the laboratory to collect aging and impedance data. An algorithm for SOH estimation is presented and evaluated. The performance evaluation results show that the SOH features extracted from the Nyquist plot can be utilized for SOH estimation. Estimated SOH values can be then utilized in various battery management systems (BMS) functions such as for calibrating the available capacity, adjusting charging/discharging strategies, and protection.

Electrolytes Polymerization‐Induced Cathode‐Electrolyte‐Interphase for High Voltage Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) based on LiNi x Co y Mn 1‐x‐y O 2 (NCM) cathode materials have been widely commercialized, because of their high energy density, favorable rate performance, and relatively low cost. However, with increased Ni content to further increase their energy density, their cycling stability deteriorates dramatically and thus fails to meet the commercial application requirements. The artificial cathode‐electrolyte‐interphase (CEI) is a promising approach to solve this problem. Here, a robust CEI is fabricated through in situ polymerization of ethylene carbonate induced by aluminum isopropoxide (AIP). By adding 1 wt.% AIP in a commercial electrolyte, the capacity retention of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ||Li cell at 1 C rate has been significantly increased from 80.8% to 97.8% with a highly reversible capacity of 176 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles. AIP can be also used as an additive during the slurry‐making process, enabling a reversible capacity of 170 mA h g −1 for LiCoO 2 after 200 cycles even at a high charge cut‐off voltage of 4.6 V. It is confirmed that the in situ formed CEI layer can prevent the cathodes from cracking and reduce the irreversible phase transformation.

Electrical properties of thermal oxide scales on pure iron in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic

Here, the impedance behavior of pre-oxidized iron in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 200 °C is studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The structures and resistance of oxide grown on iron oxidized in air at different temperatures and durations are compared. The results show that the resistance of the oxide film increases with increasing oxidizing temperature, due to the formation of a thicker scale and fewer defects. At the same temperature (600 °C), increasing the oxidation time can also reduce the defect concentration in the oxide film and improve the impedance of the oxide scale in LBE.

Electrochemical stability, physical, and electronic properties of thermally pre-formed oxide compared to artificially sputtered oxide on Fe thin films in aqueous chloride

Here the electrochemical stability and corrosion behavior of the thermally pre-oxidized and sputter deposited variant of an oxide single-crystalline Fe thin film were compared. Thermal oxides formed Fe 2 O 3 over an inner layer of Fe 3 O 4 while the sputtered oxides were found to have grown Fe 3 O 4 instead of the target stoichiometry of Fe 2 O 3 . Oxide films of both types were stable in pH=9.3 borate buffer solution, however, were altered in pH=9.3, 0.1 M NaCl solution in the case of thermally pre-oxidized Fe thin film. The stability of the oxide differed in pH=4, 0.1 M NaCl where sputtered Fe films were more stable against acidic chemical dissolution than the thermally formed Fe oxide film. These differences were traced by AC/DC electrochemical analysis including electronic defect densities, and molecular identity characterized by ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Electrochemical study of the dissolution of oxide films grown on type 316L stainless steel in molten fluoride salt

The corrosion behavior of oxide films grown on Type 316L stainless steel (SS) in molten FLiNaK (LiF-NaF-KF: 46.5−11.5−42 mol.%) salt was investigated. The results show that the oxide film formed on Type 316L SS is unstable and can only temporarily protect materials from corrosion in molten FLiNaK salt. Based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the oxide dissolution rate is calculated to be 0.85 nm/h at 700 °C in molten FLiNaK salt. Finally, after the oxide film dissolved, Cr and Fe are selective dealloyed from the steel, leading to intergranular corrosion of Type 316L SS in molten fluoride salt.

A practical approach for identifying various polarization behaviors of redox-stable electrodes in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells

In symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells, comprehensively understanding the elementary reaction processes and the polarization behaviors of redox-stable electrode materials is critical for further optimization of the electrode performance. In this work, a systematical and practical approach, based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technology, is applied to identify the rate-limiting elementary reactions of the redox-stable electrodes. The feasibility of this proposed method is demonstrated in symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells with Sr 2 Fe 1.5 Mo 0.5 O 6-σ -Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 1.95 as electrodes. Based on the characteristic frequency ranges and the experimental results tested under various fuel gas components, operating temperatures, and discharge current densities, the rate-limiting steps of the cathode are associated with the formation of adsorbed oxygen ions and the combination of oxygen ions and oxygen vacancies, while the rate-limiting steps of the anode are ascribed to the hydrogen dissociated adsorption and the steam desorption processes. This experimental and analysis framework can be straightforwardly extended to other electrode materials to unravel their electrochemical performance in detail.

Corrosion of Ferrous Structural Alloys in Biomass Derived Fuels and Organic Acids

This work investigated the corrosivity of biomass-derived liquid fuels and organic acids associated with bio-oils and conducted a corrosion compatibility evaluation of several structural ferrous alloys in the fuels and acids. Here, the acidity parameters and solution conductivity values were higher in raw pyrolysis bio-oils than postprocessed oils with significant corrosion attack for carbon steel and Fe-2.25Cr-1Mo. However, higher-grade stainless steels, ferritic Fe-15Cr (15Cb) and austenitic types 304L and 316L, showed negligible corrosion loss, whereas lower-Cr ferritic grades 409, 410, and 416 were attacked. Metal leaching tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed superior corrosion resistance of 316 over 410 stainless steels in solutions of formic and oxalic acids that can be present in bio-oils. The corrosion evaluation methods utilized in this work provide effective screening tools to identify the compatible structural alloys for bio-oils.
