Pressure Analysis for LAVA-OVEN

The Lunar Advanced Volatiles Analysis (LAVA) and the Oxygen Volatiles Extraction Node (OVEN) are subsystems included in the Regolith Environment Science, and Oxygen Lunar Volatiles Extraction (RESOLVE) payload bound for the Moon in 2019. This Resource Prospector Mission (RPM) has the objective of landing on a shadowed region of the Moons South Pole to collect data and determine whether the resources could be effectively used for space exploration systems. The quantification of the resources will help understand if it can adequately minimize materials carried from Earth by: providing life support, propellants, construction materials or energy supply to the payload or crew. This paper outlines the procedures done for the pressure analysis of the LAVA-OVEN (LOVEN) Integration Testing. The pressure analysis quantifies how much gases and water are present in the sample tested during the Engineering Testing Unit (ETU) phase of instrument development. Ultimately the purpose of these tests is to improve the estimate of the amount of water in each Lunar sample and reduce the time necessary for this estimate. The governing principle that was used for the analysis is the Ideal Gas Law, PV=nRT where P stands for pressure, V for volume, n for number of moles, R being the gas constant and T for temperature. We also estimate the errors involved in these measured and derived quantities since a key objective of the mission is to estimate the quantity of volatiles present in the lunar samples introduced into OVEN.

12.5kW Advanced Electric Propulsion System Thruster Development Testing

Since 2012, NASA has been developing the12.5kW Hall Effect Rocket with Magnetic Shielding (HERMeS)thruster to serve the need for deep space propulsion. Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR)is developing the HERMeS Hall Current Thruster (HCT)into a flight capable design through the Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) program. In execution of this program, Aerojet Rocketdyne has designed, built and begun test of two Engineering Test Unit (ETU)HCTs, designated ETU-1 and ETU-2. This paper presents some of the preliminary results from theETU-1 thruster and draws comparisons to previous HERMeS Technology Demonstration Units (TDUs)and theETU-2 characterization unit. The ETU-1 thruster serves to evaluate the ETU design against dynamic and thermal environments while ETU-2 undergoes operational characterization and wear testing. The thruster has been exposed to acceptance and qualification-level vibration and shock testing and has undergone acceptance and characterization hot-firing to evaluate thruster performance after exposure to dynamic environments. The results have demonstrated that the dynamic environments have not had an adverse effect on performance and demonstrated that stability and operating characteristics remain unaffected. Together, ETU-1 and ETU-2 HCTs have demonstrated operating performance and characteristics in-family with each other and with the NASA HERMeS Technology Demonstration Units.

PACE OCI Pre-launch ETU Spectral Characterization and Performance

The Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) is the primary sensor on the upcoming Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. OCI is a new type of sensor compared to NASA’s ocean color heritage sensors VIIRS, MODIS, and SeaWiFs. Unlike its heritage sensors, OCI has two slit grating hyperspectral spectrographs in addition to a fiber-coupled multiband filter spectrograph. The two hyperspectral spectrographs provide continuous coverage from 340nm to 885nm in the UV to NIR range. These spectrographs use programmable CCD detectors that aggregate multiple CCD pixels that can effectively provide various spectral resolutions. The fiber-coupled multiband filter spectrograph provides seven discrete spectral bands from 940nm to 2260nm. OCI completed system level testing of the Engineering Test Unit (ETU) in June 2021 at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The ETU contains one of the slit grating spectrographs (600nm to 885nm) and the fiber-coupled spectrograph. The ETU was tested in thermal vacuum (TVAC) in February 2020 and January 2021 to assess characterization and performance compliance to design requirements. This paper presents an overview of the spectral performance of the OCI ETU for relative spectral response (RSR), integrated Out-of-Band response (IOOB), system gain, band centers, and bandwidths.

Energy efficient engine: Fan test hardware detailed design report

A single stage fan and quarter stage booster were designed for the energy efficient engine. The fan has an inlet radius ratio of 0.342 and a specific flow rate of 208.9 Kg/S sq m (42.8 lbm/sec sq ft). The fan rotor has 32 medium aspect ratio (2.597) titanium blades with a partspan shroud at 55% blade height. The design corrected fan tip speed is 411.5 M/S (1350 ft/sec). The quarter stage island splits the total fan flow with approximately 22% of the flow being supercharged by the quarter stage rotor. The fan bypass ratio is 6.8. The core flow total pressure ratio is 1.67 and the fan bypass pressure ratio is 1.65. The design details of the fan and booster blading, and the fan frame and static structure for the fan configuration are presented.

Fluctuating pressures on fan blades of a turbofan engine, flight test investigation

Miniature pressure transducers were used to measure the fluctuating pressure on the fan blades of a JT15D engine in flight to aid in understanding fan-noise generation. Although the blade pressures can be considered very useful in determining far-field noise sources in the subsonic fan-blade tip speeds, other mechanisms, and as shock waves in the transonic and supersonic fan-blade tip speeds, limit their usefulness in these higher speed ranges.

Dynamic Altitude Simulation System Performance Modeling

The "Dynamic Altitude Simulation Prediction Program," DASSPP, is a program to predict the transient response of an engine, test cell, ejector system under engine shutdown conditions. These transients are important to know so that corrective modifications can be adapted to prevent any damage to the engine or test cell. The "Dynamic Altitude System Simulation Prediction Program," DASSPP, is a major rewrite of the existing program "RL-1000" written in BASIC. The RL-1000 program was written to analyze the transients of the RL-10 system only. The new program is written to run in Excell 97 and utilizes the Visual BASIC language in Excell. The program has many added features not included in the original "Rl-1000" program. The program utilizes the ejector models developed during the summer of 1997. The new program is very user friendly and utilizes a dialog box for data input.
