Parton distribution functions of heavy mesons on the light front

The parton distribution functions (PDFs) of heavy mesons are evaluated from their light-front wave functions, which are obtained from a basis light-front quantization in the leading Fock sector representation. We consider the mass eigenstates from an effective Hamiltonian consisting of the confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with running coupling. In this work we present the gluon and the sea quark PDFs which we generate dynamically from the QCD evolution of the valence quark distributions.

Investigation of the background in coherent J/ψ production at the EIC

Understanding various fundamental properties of nucleons and nuclei is among the most important scientific goals at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). With the unprecedented opportunity provided by the next-generation machine, the EIC might provide definitive answers to many standing puzzles and open questions in modern nuclear physics. We investigate one of the golden measurements proposed at the EIC, which is to obtain the spatial gluon density distribution within a lead (Pb) nucleus. The proposed experimental process is the exclusive J/ψ vector-meson production off the Pb nucleus: e + Pb → e' + J/ψ + Pb'. The Fourier transformation of the momentum transfer |t| distribution of the coherent diffraction is the transverse gluon spatial distribution. In order to measure it, the experiment has to overcome an overwhelmingly large background arising from the incoherent diffractive production, where the nucleus Pb' mostly breaks up into fragments of particles in the far-forward direction close to the hadron-going beam rapidity. We systematically study the rejection of incoherent J/ψ production by vetoing products from these nuclear breakups—protons, neutrons, and photons—which is based on the BeAGLE event generator and the most up-to-date EIC Far-forward Interaction Region design. The achieved vetoing efficiency, the ratio between the numbers of vetoed events and total incoherent events, ranges from about 80% to 99% depending on |t|. Assuming a 5% smearing applied to the reconstructed |t| resolution in the Sar t re model, this vetoing efficiency can suppress the incoherent background to at least the first minimum of the coherent |t| distribution. Experimental and accelerator machine challenges as well as potential improvements are discussed herein.

Search for resonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the b b ¯ b b ¯ final state using p p collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for resonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented. The analysis uses 126 fb -1 -139 fb -1 of pp collision data at √s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is divided into two channels, targeting Higgs boson decays which are reconstructed as pairs of small-radius jets or as individual large-radius jets. Spin-0 and spin-2 benchmark signal models are considered, both of which correspond to resonant HH production via gluon-gluon fusion. The data are consistent with Standard Model predictions. Upper limits are set on the production cross section times branching ratio to Higgs boson pairs of a new resonance in the mass range from 251 GeV to 5 TeV.

Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions from the production of Higgs bosons using the 𝜏⁢𝜏 final state

A study of anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of pp collisions at the LHC of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The study uses Higgs boson candidates produced mainly in gluon fusion or electroweak vector boson fusion at the LHC that subsequently decay to a pair of 𝜏 leptons. Matrix-element and machine-learning techniques were employed in a search for anomalous interactions. The results are combined with those from the four-lepton and two-photon decay channels to yield the most stringent constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to date. The pure 𝐶⁢𝑃-odd scenario of the Higgs boson coupling to gluons is excluded at 2.4 standard deviations. The results are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Universal features of 2 → N scattering in QCD and gravity from shockwave collisions

A remarkable double-copy relation of Einstein gravity to QCD in Regge asymptotics is Γ μ ν = 1 2 C μ C ν − 1 2 N μ N ν , where Γ μ ν is the gravitational Lipatov vertex in the 2 → 3 graviton scattering amplitude, C μ its Yang-Mills counterpart, and N μ the QED bremsstrahlung vertex. In QCD, the Lipatov vertex is a fundamental building block of the BFKL equation describing the 2 → N scattering of gluons at high energies. Likewise, the gravitational Lipatov vertex is a key ingredient in a 2D effective field theory framework describing trans-Planckian 2 → N graviton scattering. We construct a quantitative correspondence between a semiclassical Yang-Mills framework for radiation in gluon shockwave collisions and its counterpart in general relativity. In particular, we demonstrate the Lipatov double copy in a dilute-dilute approximation corresponding to R S , L , R S , H ≪ b , where R S , L , R S , H are the respective emergent Schwarzchild radii generated in shockwave collisions and b is the impact parameter. We outline extensions of the correspondence developed here to the dilute-dense computation of gravitational wave radiation in the close vicinity of one of the black holes, the construction of graviton propagators in the shockwave background, and a renormalization group approach to compute 2 → N amplitudes that incorporates graviton Reggeization and coherent graviton multiple scattering. Prospects for exotic h → 4 τ decays in single and di-Higgs boson production at the LHC and future hadron colliders

We study the prospects for observing exotic decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson h into light beyond the Standard Model scalars a with mass m a ≲ m h / 2 in the single Higgs and Higgs pair production channels at the high luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Discovery prospects for single Higgs production in the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion modes with the Higgs boson decaying via the exotic mode h → a a → 4 τ are analyzed at the HL-LHC. The projected sensitivity for exotic Higgs decays in the nonresonant Higgs pair production channel p p → h h → ( h → b b ¯ ) ( h → a a → 4 τ ) → 2 b 4 τ at the HL-LHC and a future s = 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-hh) are also estimated. Furthermore, we study HL-LHC’s potential reach for the Higgs-strahlung process in the 2 b 4 τ channel, taking into account the contamination from nonresonant Higgs pair production. Finally, the potential reach for resonant Higgs pair production in the 2 b 4 τ channel at the HL-LHC is also explored for several choices of { m H , m a } . Our studies suggest that significant improvements over existing bounds are achievable in several production channels, motivating new dedicated searches for h → a a → 4 τ at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Analysis of parton distributions in a pion with Bézier parametrizations

We explore the role of parametrizations for nonperturbative QCD functions in global analyses, with a specific application to extending a phenomenological analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the charged pion realized in the xFitter fitting framework. The parametrization dependence of PDFs in our pion fits substantially enlarges the uncertainties from the experimental sources estimated in the previous analyses. We systematically explore the parametrization dependence by employing a novel technique to automate generation of polynomial parametrizations for PDFs that makes use of Bézier curves. This technique is implemented in a ++ module that is included in the xFitter program. Our analysis reveals that the sea and gluon distributions in the pion are not well disentangled, even when considering measurements in leading-neutron deep inelastic scattering. For example, the pion PDF solutions with a vanishing gluon and large quark sea are still experimentally allowed, which elevates the importance of ongoing lattice and nonperturbative QCD calculations, together with the planned pion scattering experiments, for conclusive studies of the pion structure. New approach to QCD final-state evolution in processes with massive partons

We present an algorithm for massive parton evolution which is based on the differentially accurate simulation of soft-gluon radiation by means of a nontrivial azimuthal angle dependence of the splitting functions. The kinematics mapping is chosen such as to reflect the symmetry of the final state in soft-gluon radiation and collinear splitting processes. We compute the counterterms needed for a fully differential next-to-leading order matching and discuss the analytic structure of the parton shower in the next-to-leading logarithmic limit. We implement the new algorithm in the numerical code Alaric and present a first comparison to experimental data. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Three-point energy correlators in hadronic Higgs boson decays

We present the analytic calculation of the leading-order three-point energy correlator (EEEC) in hadronic Higgs decays, including both the gluon-initiated channel H → g g + X and quark-initiated channel H → q q ¯ + X . The phase-space integration is evaluated directly using Mandelstam variables s i j = ( p i + p j ) 2 , and the appearing square roots can be rationalized by either conformal ratios or celestial coordinate variables. Throughout the calculation, we observe the same transcendental function space as in N = 4 super–Yang-Mills theory and e + e − → hadrons . Different infrared limits are also explored using the full analytic result, offering the fixed-order data for EEEC factorization and resummation. Given its nontrivial shape dependence, the EEEC presents an excellent opportunity to explore the dynamics of gluon jets originating from the H → g g decay channel at future lepton colliders. Event generator for jet tomography in electron-ion collisions

We develop the first event generator, the electron-heavy-ion-jet-interaction-generator (eHIJING), for the jet tomography study of electron-ion collisions. In this generator, energetic jet partons produced from the initial hard scattering undergo multiple collisions with the nuclear target. The collision rate is proportional to the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon density in the nucleus, which is given by a simple model inspired by the physics of gluon saturation. Medium-modified QCD splitting functions within the higher-twist (HT) and generalized higher-twist (GHT) frameworks are utilized to simulate parton showering in the nuclear medium that takes into account the non-Abelian Landau-Pomeranchuck-Midgal interference effect. Employing eHIJING, we revisit hadron production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) as measured by EMC, HERMES, and recent CLAS experiments. eHIJING with both GT and GHT frameworks gives reasonably good descriptions of these experimental data. Predictions for experiments at the future electron-ion colliders are also provided. It is demonstrated that future measurements of the transverse momentum broadening of single hadron spectra can be used to map out the two-dimensional kinematic (Q 2 , x B ) dependence of the jet transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ in cold nuclear matter.

Glue in hadrons at medium resolution and the QCD instanton vacuum

We discuss a general framework for the evaluation of the gluonic form factors in light hadrons at low momentum transfer, in the QCD instanton vacuum. At medium resolution of the order of the inverse mean instanton size, the glue is mostly localized in single or pairs of pseudoparticles and globally constrained by the fluctuations of their topological charges. These pseudoparticles trap light quarks, giving rise to emerging multiflavor ’t Hooft interactions. We explicitly evaluate the gluonic scalar, pseudoscalar, energy-momentum tensor (EMT), and the leading C -odd and C -even three-gluon hadronic form factors, at next to leading order in the instanton density, including molecular clusters of like and unlike instantons. We use the results for the EMT to address the contribution of the gluons in Ji’s mass and spin sum rules, at low resolution. When evolved, our results for the mass and spin composition of the nucleon are shown to be in good agreement with the recently reported lattice results at higher resolution. Polarized dipole scattering amplitudes meet the valence quark model

The recently revised small- x helicity evolution [], resumming the double-logarithmic factor, α s ln 2 ( 1 / x ) , allows for the study of helicity distributions of quarks and gluons at small Bjorken x , corresponding to high center-of-mass energy. In this work, we calculate the moderate- x initial conditions in the regime, α s ln 2 ( 1 / x ) ∼ 1 , for the small- x helicity evolution using a light-front valence quark model of the proton, which provides additional physical information about the target. The perturbative emission and absorption of a gluon by the valence quarks are also included. The results, given in Eqs. (35), provide a new set of initial conditions with a significantly reduced number of free parameters than conventional models []. Consequently, the predictive power of small- x helicity evolution is expected to improve once the initial conditions from this work are incorporated. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

QCD-gravity double-copy in the Regge regime: Shock wave propagators

In a previous paper [H. Raj and R. Venugopalan, ], we demonstrated a double-copy relation between inclusive gluon radiation in shock wave collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei and inclusive graviton radiation in trans-Planckian gravitational shock wave collisions. We compute here the corresponding gravitational shock wave propagators in general relativity and demonstrate that they too obey a double-copy relation to gluon shock wave propagators computed previously. These results provide key input in a renormalization group approach toward computing the high frequency radiation spectrum in close black hole encounters. Causal fermion states in magnetic field in a relativistic rotating frame and electromagnetic radiation by a rapidly rotating charge

We consider the Dirac field uniformly rotating with angular velocity Ω and also subject to the constant magnetic field B directed along the rotation axis. The causal states are constrained to the interior of the light cylinder of radius c / Ω . When this radius is smaller than the system size, as in the quark-gluon plasma, the effect of the boundary on the fermion spectrum is critical. We derive the fermion spectrum and study its properties. We compute the intensity of the electromagnetic radiation emitted due to transitions between the fermion states. We study its dependence on energy and angular momentum for different values of the angular velocity and the magnetic field. Rotation has enormous impact on the electromagnetic radiation by the quark-gluon plasma with or without the magnetic field. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

String-based parametrization of nucleon GPDs at any skewness: A comparison to lattice QCD

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) valid at all skewness values. The conformal moments of the GPDs are expressed as sums of the spin-j nucleon A-form factor and the skewness-dependent spin-j nucleon D-form factor. This representation, which fulfills the polynomiality condition (due to Lorentz invariance) and does not rely on model-specific assumptions, is derived from t-channel string exchanges in anti-de Sitter spaces. The spin-j nucleon D-form factor is closely related to the spin-j nucleon A-form factor. We use the Mellin moments from empirical parton distributions to model the spin-j nucleon A-form factors. Using only five Regge slope parameters, fixed from the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, our string-based parametrization generates accurate singlet, nonsinglet, isovector, and flavor-separated nucleon quark GPDs, along with symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs from their Mellin-Barnes integral representations. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data. Our string-based parametrization should facilitate the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, bypassing the deconvolution challenge.

Magnetized neutral 2SC color superconductivity and possible origin of the inner magnetic field of magnetars

In this paper, the neutral 2SC phase of color superconductivity is investigated in the presence of a magnetic field and for diquark coupling constants and baryonic densities that are expected to characterize neutron stars. Specifically, the behavior of the charged gluons Meissner masses is investigated in the parameter region of interest, taking into account, in addition, the contribution of a rotated magnetic field. It is found that up to moderately high diquark coupling constants the mentioned Meissner masses become tachyonic independently of the applied magnetic-field amplitude, hence signalizing the chromomagnetic instability of this phase. To remove the instability, the restructuring of the system ground state is proposed, which now will be formed by vortices of the rotated charged gluons. These vortices boost the applied magnetic field, having the most significant increase for relatively low applied magnetic fields. Finally, considering that with the stellar rotational frequency observed for magnetars a field of the order of 10 8 G can be generated by dynamo effect, we show that by the boosting effect just described the field can be amplified to 10 17 G that is in the range of inner core fields expected for magnetars. Thus, we conclude that the described mechanism could be the one responsible for the large fields characterizing magnetars if the cores of these compact objects are formed by neutral 2SC matter. Lattice QCD calculation of 𝑥-dependent meson distribution amplitudes at physical pion mass with threshold logarithm resummation

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculation of the 𝑥-dependent pion and kaon distribution amplitudes (DA) in the framework of large momentum effective theory. This calculation is performed on a fine lattice of 𝑎 = 0.076 fm at physical pion mass, with the pion boosted to 1.8 GeV and kaon boosted to 2.3 GeV. We renormalize the matrix elements in the hybrid scheme and match to Math output error with a subtraction of the leading renormalon in the Wilson-line mass. The perturbative matching is improved by resumming the large logarithms related to the small quark and gluon momenta in the soft-gluon limit. After resummation, we demonstrate that we are able to calculate a range of 𝑥 ∈[𝑥 0 ,1 − 𝑥 0 ] with 𝑥 0 = 0.25 for pion and 𝑥 0 = 0.2 for kaon with theoretical systematic errors under control. The kaon DA is shown to be slighted skewed, and narrower than pion DA. Although the 𝑥-dependence cannot be direct calculated beyond these ranges, we estimate higher moments of the pion and kaon DAs by complementing our calculation with short-distance factorization.

Impact of LHC precision measurements of inclusive jet and dijet production on the CTEQ-TEA global PDF fit

In this study, we investigate the impact of new Large Hadron Collider (LHC) inclusive jet and dijet measurements on parton distribution functions (PDFs) that describe the proton structure, with a particular focus on the gluon distribution at large momentum fraction, x , and the corresponding partonic luminosities. We assess constraints from these datasets using next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) theoretical predictions, accounting for a range of uncertainties from scale dependence and numerical integration. From the scale choices available for the calculations, our analysis shows that the central predictions for inclusive jet production show a smaller scale dependence than dijet production. We examine the relative constraints on the gluon distribution provided by the inclusive jet and dijet distributions, and also explore the phenomenological implications for inclusive H , t t ¯ , and t t ¯ H production at the LHC at 14 TeV.
