Anomaly Detection and Approximate Similarity Searches of Transients in Real-time Data Streams

Abstract We present Lightcurve Anomaly Identification and Similarity Search ( LAISS ), an automated pipeline to detect anomalous astrophysical transients in real-time data streams. We deploy our anomaly detection model on the nightly Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Alert Stream via the ANTARES broker, identifying a manageable ∼1–5 candidates per night for expert vetting and coordinating follow-up observations. Our method leverages statistical light-curve and contextual host galaxy features within a random forest classifier, tagging transients of rare classes ( spectroscopic anomalies), of uncommon host galaxy environments ( contextual anomalies), and of peculiar or interaction-powered phenomena ( behavioral anomalies). Moreover, we demonstrate the power of a low-latency (∼ms) approximate similarity search method to find transient analogs with similar light-curve evolution and host galaxy environments. We use analogs for data-driven discovery, characterization, (re)classification, and imputation in retrospective and real-time searches. To date, we have identified ∼50 previously known and previously missed rare transients from real-time and retrospective searches, including but not limited to superluminous supernovae (SLSNe), tidal disruption events, SNe IIn, SNe IIb, SNe I-CSM, SNe Ia-91bg-like, SNe Ib, SNe Ic, SNe Ic-BL, and M31 novae. Lastly, we report the discovery of 325 total transients, all observed between 2018 and 2021 and absent from public catalogs (∼1% of all ZTF Astronomical Transient reports to the Transient Name Server through 2021). These methods enable a systematic approach to finding the “needle in the haystack” in large-volume data streams. Because of its integration with the ANTARES broker, LAISS is built to detect exciting transients in Rubin data.

A search for He-weak stars in very young clusters.

Spectral classification has been carried out for B-type stars in Ori OBl Ib, NGC 2362, IC 5146 and NGC 2264. Six stars with weak helium lines for their UBV colors were found in Ori OBl Ib, one in NGC 2362 which might be helium variable, and none in IC 5146. The star Walker No 109 (B6V) in NGC 2264 is a helium variable which has developed an outstanding absorption feature between 4144 and 4156 A.

Tough cryogenic alloys from the Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-Cr systems

By adjusting composition, metastable gamma (austenite) and epsilon (hexagonal) martensite may be retained in Fe-Mn and Fe-Mn-Cr alloys and used to impact toughness through the TRIP mechanism. The resulting alloys have excellent toughness at cryogenic temperatures. The best alloys obtained to date are: Fe-20Mn, with sigma (sub y) = 79ksi and K sub IC = 275ksi square root of (in) at 77 K, and Fc-16Mn-8Cr, with sigma sub y = 85ksi and K sub IC = 72ksi square root of (in) at 77 K.

An investigation of the edge-sliding mode in fracture mechanics

A boundary collocation procedure has been applied to the Williams stress function to determine the elastic stress distribution for the crack tip region of a finite, edge-cracked plate subjected to mode II loading at the crack tips. The asymmetric specimen selected was particularly suitable for the determination of plane strain fracture toughness for mode II loading. Numerical solutions for stress intensity factors for the edge-sliding mode obtained by the boundary collocation method were in close agreement with values obtained from photoelastic experiments. Fracture tests of several compact shear specimens of 2024-T4 aluminum were conducted in order to experimentally investigate the behavior of the edge-sliding mode. In each case a brittle shear failure was observed and mode II fracture toughness values were obtained. The average value for K-IIc obtained from two tests was 39.5 ksi radical (in). No K-Ic data for 2024-T4 were available for comparison purposes; however, K-Ic values for a similar alloy, 2024-T351, have been reported as 34 ksi radical (in) which is only about 15 per cent below the corresponding K-IIc value.

The influence of composition, annealing treatment, and texture on the fracture toughness of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn plate at cryogenic temperatures

The plane strain fracture toughness K sub Ic and conventional tensile properties of two commercially produced one-inch thick Ti-5Al-2.5Sn plates were determined at cryogenic temperatures. One plate was extra-low interstitial (ELI) grade, the other normal interstitial. Portions of each plate were mill annealed at 1088 K (1500 F) followed by either air cooling or furnace cooling. The tensile properties, flow curves, and K sub Ic of these plates were determined at 295 K (room temperature), 77 K (liquid nitrogen temperature), and 20 K (liquid hydrogen temperature).

Computational fluid dynamics applied to flows in an internal combustion engine

The reported investigation is a continuation of studies conducted by Diwakar et al. (1976) and Griffin et al. (1976), who reported the first computational fluid dynamic results for the two-dimensional flowfield for all four strokes of a reciprocating internal combustion (IC) engine cycle. An analysis of rectangular and cylindrical three-dimensional engine models is performed. The working fluid is assumed to be inviscid air of constant specific heats. Calculations are carried out of a four-stroke IC engine flowfield wherein detailed finite-rate chemical combustion of a gasoline-air mixture is included. The calculations remain basically inviscid, except that in some instances thermal conduction is included to allow a more realistic model of the localized sparking of the mixture. All the results of the investigation are obtained by means of an explicity time-dependent finite-difference technique, using a high-speed digital computer.

Pre-Imbrian history of the Fra Mauro region and Apollo 14 sample provenance

Pre-Imbrian impact structures in a large area surrounding the Apollo 14 site were identified in a study of the pre-Imbrian history of the Fra Mauro region. Calculations suggest that a total ejecta thickness of over 1700 m could have accumulated during Phase I (time prior to the Imbrium event) in the area of the ridge on which the Cone crater later formed. The majority (53%) of the ejecta at the site just prior to the Imbrium event was contributed by the numerous large Phase IB and IC craters in the vicinity and not by the lunar basins. Evidence exists for extensive pre-Imbrian volcanic activity in the Fra Mauro region. Early KREEP volcanic deposits may have existed in the target sites of many Phase IB and IC craters and would have been incorporated into their ejecta.

A study of the Taurus dark cloud complex

A near-infrared survey has been conducted of nearly 20 square degrees of the Taurus dark cloud complex. Additional observations have been made of selected objects detected in this survey. These observations show that recently formed stars are spread throughout the cloud and that these stars are primarily T Tauri stars or T Tauri-like stars. Two luminous objects are identified embedded in the reflection nebulae IC 359 and IC 2087. A new Herbig-Haro object is also described. The reddening law of the dark cloud material is discussed; it does not appear to be unusual in the infrared. Comparison of the young stellar population in Taurus with that in Ophiuchus suggests that the star formation mechanisms in the two regions are qualitatively different

Fracture toughness of brittle materials determined with chevron notch specimens

The use of chevron-notch specimens for determining the plane strain fracture toughness (K sub Ic) of brittle materials is discussed. Three chevron-notch specimens were investigated: short bar, short rod, and four-point-bend. The dimensionless stress intensity coefficient used in computing K sub Ic is derived for the short bar specimen from the superposition of ligament-dependent and ligament-independent solutions for the straight through crack, and also from experimental compliance calibrations. Coefficients for the four-point-bend specimen were developed by the same superposition procedure, and with additional refinement using the slice model of Bluhm. Short rod specimen stress intensity coefficients were determined only by experimental compliance calibration. Performance of the three chevron-notch specimens and their stress intensity factor relations were evaluated by tests on hot-pressed silicon nitride and sintered aluminum oxide. Results obtained with the short bar and the four-point-bend specimens on silicon nitride are in good agreement and relatively free of specimen geometry and size effects within the range investigated. Results on aluminum oxide were affected by specimen size and chevron-notch geometry, believed due to a rising crack growth resistance curve for the material. Only the results for the short bar specimen are presented in detail.

Observations of cool dust in planetary nebulae

Far-infrared (lambda/bar/ = 37 to 108 microns) observations of 13 planetary nebulae are presented. Their far-infrared spectral energy distributions are in general similar to that of NGC 7027, the only planetary heretofore observed at these wavelengths. Characteristic dust temperatures are near 100 K. The one planetary with a far-infrared spectral energy distribution significantly different from that of NGC 7027 is IC 418. Relative dust masses have been computed for the nebulae, and, within the very large errors, no signifcant differences are found between the masses of dust in individual nebulae. The one exception is, again, IC 418, which may have a significantly lower dust mass than the other nebulae. Emission optical depths are computed and appear to be roughly correlated with the nebular electron density.

A design procedure for fan inflow control structures

Significant differences exist in the noise generated by engine in flight and engines operating on the test stand. It was observed that these differences can be reduced by use of an inflow control structure (ICS) in the static test configuration. The results of the second phase of a three phase program are described and the results of a test program conducted to assess and modify various theoretical models, leading to the development of an ICS design system is summarized.

Studies on proper simulation during static testing of forward speed effects on fan noise

Significant differences exist in the noise generated by engines in flight and engines operating on the test stand. It was observed that these differences can be reduced by the use of an inflow control structure (ICS) in the static test configuration. The results of the third phase of a three phase program are described. The work performed in the first two phases which dealt with the development of a model for atmospheric turbulence, studies of fan noise generated by rotor turbulence interaction, and the development of an inflow control structure design system are summarized. The final phase of the program covers procedures for performing static testing with an ICS projecting the resulting static test data to actual flight test data. Included is a procedures report which covers the design system and techniques for static testing and projecting the static data to flight.

Electron densities for six planetary nebulae and HM SGE derived from the C 3 lambda 1907/1909 ratio

Electron densities for IC 418, NGC 6572, IC 1297, NGC 3242, NGC 6818, NGC 3211, and HM Sge derived from high dispersion IUE C III spectrograms are consistently higher than those derived from either surface brightness measurements of forbidden line intensity ratios in the visible. The nebulae were selected for a range of excitation classes from 3 to 9. Line splitting due to expansion velocities is observed for three objects. The great width of the lambda 1909 C III line in HM Sge suggests large expansion velocities.

A far-infrared emission feature in carbon-rich stars and planetary nebulae

The 16-30 micron spectra of several carbon stars and the planetary nebulae IC 418 and NGC 6572 have been obtained using the NASA C-141 Kuiper Airborne Observatory. A newly observed emission feature appears in the spectrum of IRC +10216 and several other carbon stars at wavelengths greater than 24 microns. The feature is interpreted as resulting from a solid-state resonance in the dust grains which have condensed around these stars. A similar feature appears in the spectra of IC 418 and NGC 6572, implying that the same type of dust is present. Since the dust probably condensed from a carbon-rich gas, this indicates an evolutionary link between carbon stars and these planetary nebulae. No identification for the grain material has been found, but some clues are apparent which could aid in the identification.

Charge distribution in lightning flashes

Four VHF receivers about 10 km apart were used to detect three-dimensional lightning VHF sources during active thunderstorms. A computer implemented algorithm was used to determine the difference in the time of arrival (DTOA) between the VHF pulses. The three-dimensional source locations determined from the DTOA were correlated with ground electric field measurements (0.1 Hz to 1.5 MHz). Four cloud to ground (CG) and three intracloud (IC) flashes, selected randomly, were studied. A point charge model was used to determine the charge being removed during the different phases of CG and IC flashes. It was determined that return strokes lowered between 24.1 and 3.6 coulombs of negative charge to ground from heights between 10.5 and 5.8 km above MSL. The interstroke process after the first return stroke in a CG flash lowered between 3.4 and 0.9 coulombs of negative charge between the heights of 14.2 (near the cloud tops) to heights of 5.8 km (near the beginning of the leader-return stroke process).

Flip-flop resolving time test circuit

Integrated circuit (IC) flip-flop resolving time parameters are measured by wafer probing, without need of dicing or bonding, throught the incorporation of test structures on an IC together with the flip-flop to be measured. Several delays that are fabricated as part of the test circuit, including a voltage-controlled delay with a resolution of a few picosecs, are calibrated as part of the test procedure by integrating them into, and out of, the delay path of a ring oscillator. Each of the delay values is calculated by subtracting the period of the ring oscillator with the delay omitted from the period with the delay included. The delay measurement technique is sufficiently general for other applications. The technique is illustrated for the case of the flip-flop parameters of a 5-micron feature size NMOS circuit.
