Miniature sonar fish tag

Self-powered sonar device may be implanted in body of fish. It transmits signal that can be detected with portable tracking gear or by automatic detection-and-tracking system. Operating life of over 4000 hours may be expected. Device itself may be used almost indefinitely.

Miniature carbon dioxide sensor

Infrared absorption spectrometer with dual wave length monochromator has several valuable features: 3.4 by 1.6 inch size; accuracy within plus or minus 5% from 0 to 30 mm Hg; instantaneous and temperature-independent response time; negligible O2 and N2 effects and less than 0.5% water vapor effect; 2.5 W power consumption; no moving parts; and 1.5 and 30 mm Hg CO2 in range.

Miniature-angular-position transducer

Simple and inexpensive device, using solar cells, measures rapidly-responding active control surfaces of aeroelastically-scaled wind-tunnel models of aircraft. Device allows control surfaces to be measured to within 0.10 deg.

Short range miniaturized biotelemetry system

A biotelemetry system for measuring and transmitting EKG, EMG, and EEG data by an RF link to a receiver was designed, developed, and delivered. The system is battery operated with the batteries and transmitting electronics an integral part of the electrode sensors. The low frequency response of 0.05 Hz assures faithful reproduction of detailed EKG and all measurements are made by the utilization of two electrode sensors.

Development of a high-resolution automatic digital (urine/electrolytes) flow volume and rate measurement system of miniature size

To aid in the quantitative analysis of man's physiological rhythms, a flowmeter to measure circadian patterns of electrolyte excretion during various environmental stresses was developed. One initial flowmeter was designed and fabricated, the sensor of which is the approximate size of a wristwatch. The detector section includes a special type of dielectric integrating type sensor which automatically controls, activates, and deactivates the flow sensor data output by determining the presence or absence of fluid flow in the system, including operation under zero-G conditions. The detector also provides qualitative data on the composition of the fluid. A compact electronic system was developed to indicate flow rate as well as total volume per release or the cumulative volume of several releases in digital/analog forms suitable for readout or telemetry. A suitable data readout instrument is also provided. Calibration and statistical analyses of the performance functions required of the flowmeter were also conducted.

Miniature pyrotechnic shock simulator

The development of pyrotechnic shock testing is prompted by requirements created by pyrotechnic devices. At the present time there are no standard techniques for the production of a given pulse. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory a device has been developed which appears to be promising as a general-purpose laboratory tool. This paper concerns the development of that device.

Use of miniature, single-wire, sheathed thermocouples

Temperature measurement with small thermocouples is improved by device. Each wire is sheathed separately which increases the interelement insulation by factor of 2 1/2. Each wire in its separate sheath can be brought to junction by independent paths.

Miniature diaphragm valve for medical equipment

Valve assembly keeps nutrient out of moving parts of valve by physically isolating plunger from fluid. Poppet and diaphragm are molded together, and latter is shaped to act as static seal, which remains seated during the operation. As plunger moves, diaphragm also moves to form separate cavity for nutrient and thus isolates it from plunger cavity and latching mechanism.

Multipurpose miniature drag-force anemometer

Simple, rugged, accurate probe measures steady-state and dynamic flow angle, and turbulence intensity in flowing fluids at subsonic velocity. Probe is simpler in design and calibration, and more durable, than hot-wire and hot-film anemometers and is not affected by flow contamination. It is less expensive and complex than laser anemometers. Associated electronics are as simple as those of strain-gage pressure transducers.

An automated miniaturized Haploscope for testing binocular visual function

A computer-controlled binocular vision testing device has been developed as one part of a system designed for NASA to test the vision of astronauts during spaceflight. The device, called the Mark III Haploscope, utilizes semi-automated psychophysical test procedures to measure visual acuity, stereopsis, phorias, fixation disparity and accommodation/convergence relationships. All tests are self-administered, yield quantitative data and may be used repeatedly without subject memorization. Future applications of this programmable, compact device include its use as a clinical instrument to perform routine eye examinations or vision screening, and as a research tool to examine the effects of environment or work-cycle upon visual function.

Miniature Ku-Band down converter

Hybrid circuit serves as receiver front end for 13.75- to 14.0-GHz communications and radar systems. Complete microwave integrated circuit (MIC) assembly is packaged in small hermetically welded, nitrogen-filled aluminum case. Simplicity and size proves useful for lower-frequency wideband applications.

Miniature velocimeter

Laser velocimeter (LV) designed to use semiconductor-diode laser is 100 times smaller than continuous-wave gas-laser velocimeter permitting mounting within wind-tunnel models or on engine walls. Mini LV uses only 0.4 watts of power and measures velocities with accuracy of 98% or better.
